Count On Me (3:41)
Magic (3:35)
Review: Although operative in the early 1980s, the quality of B & The Family's boogie-era soul recordings only became evident five years ago when the Super Disco Edits label unearthed and issued a couple of their previously unreleased recordings. These two never-before-released jams come from the same period. A-side 'Count on Me' is simply superb: a squelchy and soulful electrofunk number of the kind that were frequently released in the early '80s by the Solar System and Salsoul labels. Flipside 'Magic' is a little fuzzier and hazier - in part because it was probably transferred from a partially damaged tape - but no less impressive, delivering an attractive blend of dewy-eyed male lead vocals, elastic slap bass, colourful synthesizer sounds and dreamy chords.

Review: Powerful belters from soul supernova Baby Huey. The only solo 45s he cut for Curtom Records before he passed away aged only 26, this was released posthumously and OG copies regularly go for over 200 pounds. Now reissued on Soul Brother, the two sides give you the full fat Huey; "Hard Times" hits with a raw Lee Fields style gravelly, story-telling delivery while "Listen To Me" shows Huey's deft ability to band-lead an all-out rock jam. Raw and emotional, Huey left this world far too soon.

Review: Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is an enigmatic steel pan collective from Hamburg that has a hardcore fan following around the world and a new album on the way that is superb. They are loved for their covers of hip-hop classics and last year served up a version of the Stranger Things theme tune but this time out we get 'Love For The Sake Of Dub' of 45 rpm. It is another pair of funky tunes with the signature brass sounds front and centre as the fat bottom rhythms roll deep and fleshy. Another gem from this leftfield outfit.

Nuthin' But A G Thang (3:03)
Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has become the latest jewel in the Big Crown. Lead by Bjorn Wagner, they have stopped several essential recordings not he label, all defined by their famous steel pan sound. Often they turn to covers of the classics such as they did back in March and this time around they take aim at the much loved and low slung hip-hop classic 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' by Dr Dre. In their hands it becomes something else entirely but still delightfully low slung and sleazy. This one is backed with 'How We Do' which is another loveably fresh sound.

Review: Bjorn Wagner's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band have put out several fresh albums and many great 7"s on Big Crown and 'Hotline Bling' is another one. The mysterious Hamburg outfit brings their famous steel pan sound and reaches new heights here as they again cover songs that span genres and range from mega-hits to album cuts. Their own unique approach is to mix up the traditional sounds of Trinidad and Tobago with the original source material to leave you ready to dance all night long.

Review: Big Crown is one of our favourite labels here at HQ. The funk and soul they serve up is perfectly aged yet never overly nostalgic and this new one is another case it point. It's the latest from the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band and features two singles take from their latest and greatest album Expansions which landed back in June. As always they bring their own unique steel drum sounds and tropical Caribbean vibes to funk music. 'Raise It Up' is a deep cut joint with big horns and rippling steel drums puddles while 'Space' is a more lumpy groove with the drums more front and centre.

Review: Coming off their latest long player Expansions on Big Crown Records which is due for release this July, the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band returns. Using the steel pan sounds that are traditionally from Trinidad and Tabago is the draw and unique approach of the band, and Expansions will have a little bit of something for everyone, with several unique covers along with original tracks like 'Tough Victory'. Review: The always excellently go slow and tropical sounds of Big Crown now look to Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band for covers of two classics. Up first is Grace Jones' nightclub classic "My Jamaican Guy" while on the flip is Erykah Badu's tribute to the legendary J Dilla, "The Healer". Both retain the essence of the original but come with loose hand claps, shimmering steel drums that bring coastal breezes, sand and sun into the equation and leave you laying horizontal. These are fine interpretations of top notch source material.

Tender Trap (3:35)
Review: Hamburg's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band are as enigmatic and alluring as when they released their first single back in 2007, a tidy funk 7" that was to set the scene for a very particular sort of instrumental sound. "Jungle Fever", out on their own excellent Big Crown imprint, is a 2015 single that is truly hard not to play on repeat; the tune is a delicate yet funked-out blend of raw drums and tropical steel melodies, much like the name of the band already implies! The flipside "Tender Trap" is more broken and loose in its arrangement, something that makes it perhaps even more catchy and provocative than the title track.

Halloween Theme (2:41)
Review: They're best known for covering hip-hop classics in their unique, funk band plus steel pans vibe, but Germany's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band show there are spookier arrows in their quiver when the time of year demands it. Two special halloween themed cover versions grace this 7", the first a rendition of the theme from TV show of the moment 'Stranger Things', the second their version of the title theme from the film 'Halloween', originally penned by the master soundtrack maker himself John Carpenter. Both have a slightly cheeky, quirky and rather joyful atmosphere, tending more towards the cute rather than the spooky side of all hallows, but don't let their lack of scariness put you off, they're both delightful.010920

Tried (instrumental) (3:32)
Review: Despite not releasing all that much in 2018, Canadian nu-jazz combo BADBADNOTGOOD's reputation continued to rise. That was in no small part due to their eye-catching collaboration with Little Dragon, which resulted in the digital release of "Tried" back in September. Now the track has been given a deserved seven-inch single release by Ninja Tune. With LD lead vocalist Yukimi Nagano doing her best to channel the spirit of Minnie Riperton, "Tried" has a similarly languid, jazz/folk/soul fusion feel as some of the best works by Rotary Connection. BADBADNOTGOOD's admiration of the Charles Stepney-produced band comes through loud and clear through the choice of instruments and arrangements. For further proof, check the accompanying flipside instrumental mix.

Review: Huzzah! New music from Liam Bailey, who has voiced a couple of the most gorgeous reggae, soul and dub fusion 7"s we've got in our collection in recent years. He has, we're told, recently been recording a new album and the two tunes pressed up here on Big Crown are taken from it. El Michels Affair man Leon Michels is the go-to producer once more for Bailey and they strike gold as always with 'Dance With Me'. It is a hella catchy two-stepper that harks back to the earliest days of reggae. On the flip, 'Mercy Tree' has hard-hitting drums and big horns that come with a powerhouse vocal that speaks of racial tensions that sadly persist throughout the world. It's a standup jam with a potent message.

Review: Hot on the heels of his rather good album Ekundayo - a brilliant set of reggae, dancehall and folk-infused lo-fi soul songs - Nottingham singer-songwriter Liam Bailey returns with two bona-fide legends in tow. The Roots member Black Thought guests on a bold new version of LP track 'Champion', in which he and Bailey's superb vocals ride a fuzzy, organ-rich riddim that sits somewhere between classic reggae and pitched-down dancehall. The Legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry lends his distinctive vocals to the fresh flipside version of 'The Ugly Truth', an intergalactic digi-dub-goes-soul affair that's every bit as awesome as the on-point A-side. On this latest single, he's tackling the mighty 'Spoonful', originally written by Willie Dixon and first made famous by Etta James, Howlin' Wolf and eventually Cream. Review: For a classic 7" that makes you wish you could have experienced the rock and roll and blues heyday, these two dusty gems by Lavern Baker and Jackie Wilson are a great start. Taken from 1960, "Bumble Bees" by Baker is a chiming, doo-wop sing-a-long love song with a tastefully disgruntled character, while Baker & Wilson provide the excellent and X-rated "Think Twice", which sings about taboo topics like cocaine, pussy and reefa. It also boasts lyrics like 'son of a bitch', 'I aint gonna kiss your ass no more' and 'I've had enough of your shit' - not to mention the other out-there obscenities for the time which include references to oral sex. Review: These previously unreleased tracks from Revelations member Phillip Balou were offered to Super Disco Edits by one-time British soul journalist David Nathan, who worked alongside the musician and band mate John Simmons at the tail end of the 1970s. A-side "Ain't Nothing Like The Love", a gospel inspired slice of sumptuous soul complete with jazzy guitar solos and an evocative lead vocal from Ballou, is undoubtedly the pick of the two tracks and well worth anyone's hard-earned cash. That said, deep and sugary flipside "For Real" - a thrillingly evocative slow jam full of gospel style choral backing vocals, sumptuous electric piano and sweeping, synthesized strings - is almost as good.

Mr Funky Samba (3:41)
Review: For the latest release on their on-point Brasil 45s sub-label, Mr Bongo takes a trip back to 1977, and the early days of legendary fusion outfit Banda Black Rio. Both the cuts here are taken from the band's brilliant debut album, Maria Fumaca, and see them fusing Brasilian samba and jazz sounds with the righteous, dancefloor-friendly grooves of funk and disco. "Maria Fumaca" itself is a deliciously sunny and sweaty affair, with punchy horns, eyes-closed guitar solos and jazz-funk electic piano lines rising above a carnival-ready samba-funk groove. The U.S funk influence comes to the fore more on flipside "Mr Funky Samba", which sounds like Azymuth jamming with members of the T.K Disco, Philadelphia International and Salsoul house bands. Yep, it's that good.

It was the initiative of composer and keys man Peppe Maiellano and rapper, DJ and producer Tonico Settanta. The rest of the cast is ever rotating and the music they make is a lively mix of disco, funk and soul with signature Italo melodies. This new single is taken from their June 2021 album UFO Bar and is a low slung number with a steamy vocal and a somewhat sleazy bassline. 'Living Disco Club' (Tonico 70 Reloved) then slows it down further with even more twirling melodies.

Review: These two tracks from Mike Bandoni and Chip Wickham have been a long time coming. The two stablemates from the 'Craig Charles Fantasy Funk Band' have been discussing a collaboration for years and now; and it's finally in the bag! Mike brings his trademark killer funky drums (recorded by the legendary Malcolm Catto), percussion, Rhodes, bass and vintage guitar vibes to the party, whilst Chip delivers some sublime and highly complimentary work on sax and flute. 'Infinity Pool' sounds like a long-lost Bobbi Humphrey-meets-Bob James composition, with the flute taking centre stage - underpinned by what can only be described as mammoth funk grooves on every other instrument - while 'Get It!' is a cool number, channelling a phenomenally infectious groove and hook, both of which remain in the brain for days.

In 1966 he put out his Iconic Revilot single 'Open The Door To Your Heart', backed with 'Our Love (Is In The Pocket).' It is one of the most played, collected and revered 45s in the whole scene and when a copy was found in 2014, it was eventually auctioned off for L14,000 and helped cement his status. He had many other gems in his catalogue including this one. 'I'm The One Who Loves You' has it all - the swirling grooves, the big horns, the lush strings and aching vocal. Ahead of a new collection of unheard cuts from the southern funk band, Family Groove records has decided to reissue it. In it's A-side 'Part 1' form, the track is a killer instrumental funk workout rich in razor-sharp guitar licks, weighty bass, crunchy drum breaks and hazy horns (the arrangement of which was provided by Isaac Hayes). Firstly, 'Time Waits' pairs nice analogue drum work and big, pixelated chords straight from the 80s. It's a sugar sweet tune with a buttery smooth vocal that will get those rumps wiggling. Here the London-based imprint continues in a similar vein via a fresh two-track "45" from in-house crew BB Soul and honey-voiced vocalist Laura Jackson. A-side "Make It Out" is superb: a wholehearted musical tribute to the smooth, synth-heavy sounds of 1980s soul rich in D-Train style synth bass, wild synth squiggles, warm Rhodes chords and authentic electric guitar flourishes - all topped off with a sublime Jackson vocal. Flipside "Reach Out" is a smoother, arguably even more soulful number that sits somewhere between early '80s electrofunk, mid-80s synth-soul and simmering British street soul. It, too, is impeccably performed and produced.

You Need Lovin (4:08)
You Need Lovin (instrumental) (3:54)
Review: BDQ Records is the outlet for jam quintet BunnDebrettQuintet, who emerged out of 90s acid jazz titans Mother Earth. Their sound has refocused on a raw and rasping strain with a live, in-the-room electricity which comes through brilliantly on this new single with Lydia Sharpe. Taking a few cues from a Led Zeppelin classic, Sharpe strikes a fierce, sultry figure on top of the sizzling hot Hammond organ vamps and low slung rhythm section. It sounds dangerous like a niche 50s cut, but there's plenty of meat on the bones of the production, while the familiar vocal hooks will go down a storm with a busy dancefloor.

Be Careful (Fila Brazillia remix) (5:42)
Review: Mogwai's Rock Action label welcomes Bdrmm for a superb new 7" that mixes up heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics. It was written during recent album sessions at The Nave Studios in Leeds and finds them expanding on their signature dynamics and expansive sounds with reverb heavy vocals and plenty of atmospheric arrangements. On the flip side is an unlikely remixer in the shape of Fila Brazillia, the cult Hull downtempo and chill out kings that have worked with everyone from Radiohead to Harold Budd, adding their own spin to recent album track 'Be Careful.'

Good Vibes (dub) (4:02)
Review: Beatconductor serves up a cheeky white label that is masterfully laidback and sunny for those hot and lazy days. Despite the source of the bootleg being one of the most famous tunes in pop history, Beach Fanatic does a good job or working it into something fresh. The original vocals roll over ice-cold beats and hits and make for a real hypnotic piece. A dub of 'Good Vibes' is also included of those who like it more heady. Drop either of these to an outdoor crowd with a beer in their hand and the results will be magic.

Self Revolution (3:14)
Review: Canadian recording sensation Gary Beals dropped his new single 'All of Me' back in summer ahead of his latest new album The Melody Within which arrived in autumn. It's another joyous and uplifting single that has big claps and shiny keys all topped off with his soaring and super sweet vocals that carry an infectious energy and capture the spirit of summer. On the flip is a more downbeat soul slow burner with sentimental lyrics and pained acoustic guitar lines that really tug on the heartstrings. He says, "All of Me is just another extension of the feelgood music I've always desired to make" and we agree.

Review: Izipho Soul celebrates its 100th release with another gem. This latest 7" channels the velvety vocals of Barry Whyte, featuring Lawrence Beamen's timeless hit 'Thinking of You.' Initially recorded in 2008, the track has been eagerly awaited for a vinyl release. Finally, it's here, sounding more vibrant than ever. The 7" remix, expertly crafted by Don Turney at DKS Productions, breathes new life into this classic, elevating its charm even further. On the flip side, 'Been a Long Time' brings dynamic energy straight from Oakland, California, rounding out this impressive release from Izipho Soul.

Review: Hawaiian label Izipho Soul makes it to the not-so-small milestone of 100 releases here. This latest 7" is another pearler that channels the buttery baritone of Barry Whyte. It takes the form of Lawrence Beamen's timeless hit 'Thinking of You,' initially recorded in 2008, which has long been sought after for a vinyl release. Finally, after years of anticipation, it's here and sounding more vibrant than ever. The 7" remix, skilfully crafted by Don Turney at DKS Productions, injects new life into this classic, enhancing its allure even further. Review: Some hand-stamped 7" white-gold here with Beactconducter serving up a couple of brilliant disco dazzlers for late night sessions. 'The Drag Stop' pairs some aching soft-rock vocals with tumbling congas and chunky disco drums that march on wards and upwards as the synths bring some cosmic drama. On the flip is a more retro sousing disco gem with 'Something Better' (edit). It has funky drums and piano chords dancing next to hip swinging finger clicks and some big vocals. All in all a vital pick up that offers two some dance-y disco delights.

Human Emotions (4:50)
I Can FIXX A Hole (4:44)
Review: Long-serving scalpel fiend Beatconductor is in old-school mash-up mode on this tidy seven-inch single, which serves as the third release on his freshly minted GATT imprint. On 'Human Emotions' he cannily combines two classic cuts: the instrumental of Human League synth-pop classic 'Don't You Want Me' and the full female acapella from a loved-up, glassy-eyed soul/R&B gem that should be familiar to most. He does something for more revolutionary on the surprisingly brilliant 'I Can FIXX A Hole', where the acapella from a Pepper-time era Fab Four favourite rises above a tweaked, slightly dubbed-out version of a vintage, Rhodes-sporting Hall & Oates groove. It shouldn't work, but it genuinely does!

Review: This is the fourth in a new series of stamped 7" releases from Gatt artist Beatconductor. There is nothing smart about the work on 'sink About It' which simply brings a classic vocal to a big beat. It's an easy way to get any party going. On the flip is 'Let It Happen' (unreleased 7" mix) which his more nuanced and interesting, with funky bass lines, loose limbed percussion and gorgeously twinkling keys all raining down from above.

Crazy In Kingston (7 Inch rework) (4:04)
Review: On the second volume in the GATT edits series, Swedish scalpel fiend Beatconductor once again pairs a previously unheard rework with something sought-after from his catalogue. In the latter category you'll find flipside 'Crazy in Kingston', an early noughties mash-up that adds Beyonce's superb lead vocals (and Jay-Z's on-point rap verse) from the peerless 'Crazy in Love' with a dusty old reggae riddim. It's a simple idea, beautifully executed. The brand-new (or at least previously unheard) cut this time around is 'Finger on the Trigger', a lolloping, life-affirming tweak of a 1970s dancefloor soul number that sits somewhere between the stomping heaviness of Detroit Soul and the proto-disco deliciousness of Philly Soul.

Review: Beath is back after the huge success of his Dream From Last Night album, and this time he's come armed with another pair of boogie laced, disco fried and funked up monsters. They come on Neon Fingers and kick off with 'Summer Storm' which has bright, pixelated chords, a colourful sense of 80s nostalgia and a fuzzy VHS aesthetic that warms the heart. As the drums boucle and bobble and the spraying chords burst out the mix, hands will go skywards int the club. On the flip is 'Rainbow,' another sublime and leggy cut with tumbling analogue drums and a singing lead that brings real joy.

Review: The Beatles' EP From Us To You #3 captures a 1964 BBC session that encapsulates the band's early charm and infectious energy. Featuring a whopping ten tracks, it was recorded in the BBC's Paris Studios in Regent Street, London and fact fans will note that 'Honey Don't which was later included on the album Beatles For Sale and sung by Ringo, here features John on the vocals. Elsewhere the EP captures the band's irresistible melodies and tight harmonies with three of the tunes originally penned by the band's favourite rockabilly star Carl Perkins. Each song is a testament to The Beatles' enduring influence on popular music and overall serves as a timeless reminder of the band's unmatched creativity which continues to this day with new AI-produced singles that the much talked about one earlier in the year.

Love Me Do (2:26)
Review: Initially put forward as a potential Beatles single during the mid 1990s 'Anthology' period but shelved due to objections from George Harrison, 'Now and Then' has been trailed as the iconic band's 'final single'. It's re-emergence now in finished form (it was completed partially using AI, but also some studio trickery by Giles Martin) ties in with the reissue of the band's two 1973 'best of' compilations (the so-called 'Red' and 'Blue' collections). Like their two singles of the 90s, it features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison finishing off an early 70s John Lennon demo, with a little help from producer Jeff Lynne. It comes backed with a freshly remixed, 'proper' stereo version of their debut single, 'Love Me Do', thus completing the band's musical journey once and for all.

The 72nd such 7" from the label and producer of he same name is another one to add to the racks if you too love those sort of sounds - and frankly, why wouldn't you? '318 Series' (90s HipHop mix) is a leggy one that rides one big hits and dusty breaks with some sweet bars up top to finish it off nicely. '320 Series' (90s HipHop mix) is much more laidback, with jazzy melodic motifs up top and airy drums that float as they roll.

It was original by written by Mike Heron and is a beautiful piece of acoustic guitar work with tender vocals and sweeping string sounds that come over like an adult lullaby, all soothing sounds and enchanting moods. Review: Indie darling Beck has been 'Thinking About You' on what is his first new music in some time since he dropped his GRAMMY-winning Hyperspace album. This single gets pressed up to a limited edition golden-brown 7" to mark the much-loved artist's birthday and it is a sublime bit of prime and emotional Beck as his heart-tugging best. The ballad has some sombre harmonica, acoustic guitar lushness and was recorded in the same room as his classic 'Sea Change'. On the flip side is his GRAMMY-nominated cover of Neil Young's 'Old Man' which is a wistful sound with rich tones.
