Review: Founding Bees members Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher recorded the original Sunshine Hit Me on the Isle of Wight in their own home garden studio which they called The Shed. A year after release in 2003 it got recognised with a Mercury Music Prize nomination and spawned some big singles. Now, 20 years on, it arrives once more but in an all-new and dubbed-out fashion. The six cuts include three which have never previously been released in any physical format and bring a fresh dimension to the originals.

Review: Scottish party starter Sally C is behind the bolshy brilliance of the Big Saldo's Chunkers label. So far the releases have come at a steady rate but have always been of utmost quality. Bella takes care of the label's fourth outing and it's another peak time outing full of big fun. 'Note To Self' is a mix of potent breaks, trance chords and rave energy where 'Orchestra Spring' is more direct and bouncy with a rugged bassline pumping the breaks and 'Odd Symphony' then slips into a deeper vibe still but one that is no less dynamic. An Olsvanger remix of the same tune takes it into mind-melting late night afterparty territory.

Review: In 1972, French producer turned ZE Records founder Michel Esteban released a one-off single as Bella Vista, "Mister Wong". Like many of the records the New York-based entrepreneur worked on, the track gleefully joins the dots between spacey synth-pop, NYC style mutant disco and what these days we'd call sun-kissed Balearic disco. The slow motion, glassy-eyed original version comes accompanied by the original flipside "Disco Dub" - a much sparser affair focused on the killer slap bass, reverb-laden percussion and slivers of guitar and synth - and a brand new "Extended Disco Dub Edit" by Isle of Jura chief Kevin Griffiths as Jura Soundsystem. This extends the oh-too-short Disco Dub for greater dancefloor pleasure while adding some fantastic new percussion.

Review: Joey Beltram would likely feel you it is as much a blessing as it is a curse to have made a tune as monstrously successful and widely known as 'Energy Flash' so early in your career. Along the way, he made plenty of others that are just as effective in their mix of techno, breaks and rave. This second volume of them on the Belgian label R&S proves that. 'My Sound' is all throwback rave horns and textured metal drum sounds, while 'The Melody' has a more stripped-back but no less effective sound. 'Sub-Bass Experience' is just that - a bowel-bothering low end is the main feature with sharp hi-hats and blistering synths up top. 'The Reflex' shuts things down in marching late-night fashion.

Review: People Of Earth strides into the New Year with a new project called The Elements Series. Part one welcomes some serious names, not least Detroit's ambient and techno master John Beltran who kicks off with 'Nuyorico' a joyous, chord-laced house groove laden with organic percussion. Javonntte's 'Tropical Feelings' is another of his textbook deep house cuts with whispered vocals bringing a spiritual vibe. Atlanta's main man Kai Alce does his do with the jazzy synth energy of shuffling house cut 'Benefit' (NDATL instrumental mix) then Byron The Aquarius pairs things back to dusty drums and humid chords on 'Sun Gods'. This one is only for the real heads.

Review: Ben Sun brings his radiant rays of melodic beauty to this fresh new deep house platter on the small but already well-formed Cyphon label. 'Tether' opens up with bright and synth synths zipping about next to heartfelt vocal coos as raw beats power things onwards. 'Self & Other' then bumps its way through Detroit synth magic and hooky percussive sounds and 'Apex' slows down but is another house outing drenched in mellifluous and meaningful chords. 'Shores Of Mind' closes down with warm, rippling acid and lazy, hazy chords to round out the EP with the best of the bunch.

Review: Three years after he concluded a run of fine EPs on Delusions of Grandeur, Ben Sun has brought his musically rich, hard-to-pigeonhole fusion of deep house, jazz-funk and nu-disco to Razor N Tape Reserve for the very first time. He's in fine form, too, skipping between deliciously detailed, musically expansive deep house-disco (the spacey synth solos, rubbery bass, cut-glass strings and nods to Metro Area of 'Transmission'), supremely spacey deep house (Jon Sable hook-up 'Sable Son'), tributes to Chicago house-influenced late 1980s deep synth-pop ('Tremors', which sounds like a cross between Dream 2 Science and the Pet Shop Boys more melancholic moments) and squelchy piano house ('Red Light').

Review: Benales returns to Construct Re-Form with five new electrifying dancefloor tracks in the vein of techno. Beginning from an orthodox Birmingham-school position but then gradually moving outward into ever-slighter expressions of nonconformity, it would be difficult to predict the stylistic move from echoic loomer-alarmer 'Cuphead' to the scratchy-stabby hard cutoffs of 'Grip', but hey, we're all for such movements.

Review: Nick Beringer is a man who can program and brilliantly tight and kinetic groove with his drum machines no matter the genre. This new 12" on Abartik finds him doing just that, firstly within a house framework on 'Transatlantic', a nice deep and silky cut with effortlessly cool vibes. 'Cash Call' is a more gritty minimal and tech fusion with bobbling bass and splashy hi hats, then 'Euro Gap' mixes up gurgling acid with neon chords and nice trippy designs that will work the afters. 'Rm90' keeps up that vibe with more deft designs and liquid electronic funk that waves its way deep into your brain.

Review: Electro heavyweight Marco Bernardi is back on Harbour City Sorrow with his first release in four years. Given his considerable history exploring the outer limits of machine funk, you'll be pleased to know this new single offers another two excursions into parts unknown that shirk the formulaic tendencies of so much contemporary electro. 'Shuiler' opens the record up in a shimmer of high-definition synth lines tipped towards melancholic braindance and perfectly suited to warm-up hours or the afters alike. 'Fusilli' takes a wholly different approach steeped in sharp, abrasive drums more indebted to industrial than electro, and some deadly rompler slap bass which will keep dancers on their toes in the parties adventurous enough to give this mutant beatdown a spin.

Review: The mysterious and unknown Betdat's first EP has landed on the amazing techno and electro label Frustrated Funk, with 'Supercell' showcasing some of the most futuristic electro cuts laid to wax. The sound in 'EF5' is mechanical, robot-like, and downright brutal and unforgiving, while on the second side, 'Vortex2' mixes some dubby elements into the equation to makeup a more raw and grainy sound. 'Honeymoon Phase' rounds out the EP with a much warmer and sensual sounding space-age robot love song. This record has something for every electro fan to love.

Review: Betty & The Code Red is a life and creative partnership between Benin-born Tunde Obazee and his girlfriend Betty. The pair grew up in Nigeria and would play all manner of instruments to entertain people at the local school before staying together as they went on to live in Italy and the US. Obazee performed at colleges and universities despite no formal training and eventually recorded a selection of tunes together including a small album on relatively new bits of gear like the Yamaha RX7. Especial has collated some of their best work across two new EPs, this being one of them.

Review: There is always a good backstory to the music that Emotional Rescue releases and this EP is a case in point. It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. A selection of them feature on this, the first of two EPs from the pair.

Review: Drumcode supremo Adam Beyer has become increasingly more prolific in recent years, signalling a creative renaissance that recalls the undoubted quality of his work in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His first outing of 2024, which follows a quartet of EPs last year, is predictably strong and packed to the rafters with future Drumcode anthems. Fittingly, he starts with 'Let's Begin', where mutilated vocal loops, mind-mangling rave noises and unsettling melodic motifs dance atop a typically thunderous and breathless big room techno groove, before opting for a dirtier, acid-flecked groove, metallic noises and sped-up hip-hop vocal samples on 'Computerized' (hip-techno anyone?). To round things off, he goes darker and denser still on the loopy techno power of 'Red Room', which pleasingly also boasts the same Aisha vocal sample as the Orb's 'Blue Room'.

Review: Adam Beyer seems to be in a superb run of late and this is his second vinyl outing in as many months. Desert Queen is pure Beyer, and pure Drumocde - drum-led techno for the main room with sweeping synths and grand vocals that are designed to impact crowds of thousands. The A-side actually brings a touch of trance energy and hard techno funk with its slamming, flat-footed drums, coarse synths and brightly lit arrangements. 'Soulful' then flips the script with a more funky groove that rocks back and forth and has funky basslines and a pitched up r&b vocal that works strangely well in the unusual context.

Review: For his first outing of 2019, Adam Beyer has turned over the parts to his 2014 single "Teach Me" to Belgium's first lady of banging, acid-fuelled techno, Amelie Lens. She subsequently serves up two throbbing, peak-time ready revisions, with the A-side "Main Mix" offering a near perfect blend of booming, kick-drum driven beats, military snare fills, cut-up late night vocal samples and distorted, mind-altering riffs. As the title suggests, the flipside "Acid Remix" sees Lens indulge her love of mind-altering TB-303 acid lines, brilliantly wrapping them around a springier drum track, EBM-influenced melodic motifs and more pulsating, manipulated vocal loops.

Review: Drumcode's main brain Adam Beyer hardly needs any introduction, but newcomers to the label might be surprised that his outfit has its sights set on putting out single-sided releases at the minute. 'Legend' is Beyer's kick-off for 2023, following up the completion of his own home studio with an inspired production run. An ascendant fast-build to sublime ecstasy, the track characteristically locks into a deep arpeggiated saw line at its drop; an example of Beyer flaunting his ability to juxtapose massive pre-drop space with post-drop minimality.

Review: Two right legends of techno unite here for the latest release on Drumcode. Label chief Adam Beyer presents 'Restore My Soul' featuring Chicago hard techno veteran DJ Rush, their relationship stretching back nearly three decades from when they both started out in the' 90s. The title track is aimed squarely at the main room dancefloor; a seething, mental groove featuring Rush's stern vocal delivery atop, before taking the energy levels into the peak time on the adrenalised thrasher 'Control'. Over on the flip, you are treated to a rework of the title track by DJ Rush himself in his typically stomping and orotund style.

Review: Here's a big old belter on that biggest of techno fortresses, Drumcode. On this two-track slammer, Adam Beyer and Bart Skils' monster track 'Your Mind' gets revisited by New York up and comer Charles D. After releases on Say What? and Pryda, D is able to show off his skills twice over, on the A-side living up to the billing of the 'Epic mix' of 'Your Mind' by bringing in the big, swelling pads that can fill a stadium and get hands raised aloft. On the flip, the 'Acid Line' version unsurprisingly brings a little 303 action into the mix, and makes sure the undercarriage is a thunderous juggernaut of supersized techno.

Review: Next up from the leading label in the world of so-called Business Techno are a couple of contemporary remixes of some Adam Beyer classics. His Restore My Soul EP was written with DJ Rush and now gets reworked by modern day greats ANNA and HI-LO. The latter, a regular on the likes of Filth on Acid, goes first and flips the title track into a bruising and panel beaten techno roller with coarse drums and peak time intent. Brazilian talent ANNA then offers a more subversive and slow boring take on 'Control' that has twitchy synths and firmly rooted techno drums.

Review: Some serious peak time weapons for the main room on offer here, from the ever reliable Swedish label Drumcode. Usual heroes of the label such as Luigi Madonna, Sam Paganini and Joseph Capriati step aside for some other equally reliable staples. On the A, side label boss Adam Beyer teams up with Enrico Sangiuliano on the evocative and life affirming "Preset Heaven" which takes its cues from early trance with its amazing chord progression. It is something more typical of the label next, on the pummelling warehouse stomp of "Muzik" by Bulgaria's Timmo. On the flip, there's more trance nostalgia on offer again - this time from legends Pig & Dan on the hypnotic/melodic bliss of "La Bruja" which we could imagine melting the minds of festival crowds well into the new year. Finally they save the best for last with French peak time specialist Julian Jeweil, serving up the furious, tunneling and strobe-lit ultraviolence of "Nasa" which will have your adrenaline going from the first beat. It has been a stellar year for the powerhouse label, with great releases by Moby, Dubfire and newcomer Layton Giordani.

Review: Techno team-ups don't come bigger than this, as Drumcode's overlord of all things mega-tech Adam Beyer links up with Chicago's agent provocateur Green Velvet to give you your next stadium shaking anthem. This isn't the first time Beyer and Velvet have worked together - you could find them on the 2018 track 'Space Date' for one thing - but there's a sense 'Simulator' will become their calling card as a formidable double act. Review: Raton has grown to be a quite an integral part of Drumcode as well as the underground at large and now after previously working on the likes of Ellum Audio he finds himself in the studio with techno bigwig, Adam Beyer. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. That's certainly what NuNorthern Soul boss Phil Cooper thinks, because he went to great lengths to do this fully remastered reissue. Review: Balearic is perfected to near-Platonic form on this new split single from Joan Bibiloni, the Mallorcan artist and guitarist behind many such full-length masterpieces as 'Joana Lluna' and 'Una Vida Llarga I Tranquila'. Gouranga Music's re-licensing of Bibiloni's music here sees two new remixes by esteemed reworker Ray Mang; 'The Boogie' adds sheeny mega-production to Bibiloni's original, with tense chordwork and watery delays backing up a maddeningly restless instrumental. The ambient standout here, though, is the B, 'Val, Vuw Ya', on which Mang refuses to differentiate between pad, kazoo, tambourine and guitar, it's that washed out. A fascinating new release, straddling two disparate zones in Balearic music.

Review: With over 50 years of experience dating way back to the early 70s with the progressive outfit Zebra, Joan has left quite a discography that is still being discovered and enjoyed. This EP - Joan Bibloni's second appearance on the label in total - features three versions of 'Badia Onirica', two of them being language versions and then the instrumental. Overall, the song is a track fitting for the Cafe Del Mar sound - a mix of folk, electronica, house with a Latin and folk influence and versions in Spanish and Catalan. An EP for watching the sunsets, dreaming on the beach and remembering life's great time with friends and family. NuNorthernSoul continues to honor the chill out legacy.

Review: It appears to be relatively early days for Philip Biedermann, who kicked off his label The Machine Dream in 2022 with his debut release. However, as is evident on his second drop, there's a canny blend of sincerity in his vintage sound which speaks to a longer investment in analogue techno. The composition and arrangement on 'Cybernetics' in particular has a dramatic tension which lends itself to the warm, seedy characteristics of the synths which make the track. The vibe maintains across the EP, with 'Digital Emotions' tipping towards electro without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Biedermann has a synth-rich sound all his own, ensuring his tracks will be easy to spot in the mix.

Review: On his contribution to Watergate's mix series, Biesmans has decided to showcase his own tracks, and mostly a dizzying array of previously unheard collaborations with some seriously talented producers. It makes sense then that the German imprint has decided to show off the best of these across two vinyl samplers, of which this is the second. It's a great collection all told, with opener 'Quantum Computing' - a bumping piano-house hook-up with one of his musical heroes, Mathew Jonson - and the effortlessly funky nu-disco workout 'Me Gusta Acid', co-produced by Kid Simius, standing out. Elsewhere, solo cut 'Hipster Paradise' and Johannes Albert collaboration 'Luft' are also well worth a listen.

Review: The Blind Vision label celebrates five years in the age with a nice look back at some of its Hidden Treasures From The Past. Big Al gets underway with an immediatly catchy and dubbed out, stripped back and cool-as-you-like groove in 'If Only' (Silverlining dub). Fred Everything & Jay Tripwire then link to sublet effect on the US garage groove that is 'Sometimes I Feel' with its liquid dub chords and steamy trumpet motifs, and Grant Dell goes for a deep cosmic workout on 'Being There.' Review: Big Bud originally released Faceless/New Vision back in 1995 on Underdog Recordings, offering up a weighty variant of atmospheric d&b that he made his own. As you might expect OG copies of this mid-decade change hands for some hefty sums, but fear not because Vinyl Fanatiks are on hand with a spanking new pressing on pink vinyl no less. A side 'Faceless' is a laser-focused roller with tightly clipped breaks and strafing synths, but 'New Vision' is the real gem which gets more intricate in the drum programming, drawing on less heavily mined percussion and more artful synth work to make a truly standout cut.

Review: Prolific under a variety of different aliases between them, Italian artists Big Hands and Banishsh continue to push the limits on the latter's new SM000 imprint. Sitting right on the edge of a variety of genre hinterlands, there are notes of jungle, dub, techno and IDM running throughout. Big Hands' 'SWGGN' vibes with the most upbeat feeling and flow while Banishsh's 'OP' version hits with much more of a dancehall bounce and sense of bass tension and the '55' deconstructs and dubs things out even more. Review: The Demon Singles Club has been digging deep again and this time they have unearthed a trio of delights from Travis Biggs. Biggs played the keys with Isaac Hayes towards the end of the 70s when Hayes was playing with disco sound. During that same era, Biggs went it alone on a pair synth laced and spaced out albums 1976's Challenge, on TB&C, and 1979's Solar Funk, on MCA subsidiary Source. The trio of cuts on this 12" come from the latter of those two - one of them will be particularly recognisable to J Dilla fans for the famous beatmaker sampled it quite famously.

Review: Marking 40 years since the release of Edwin Birdsong's self-titled and fourth studio album, this Philly reissue couldn't have landed at a more poignant time as the LA funkateer sadly passed away on week of release. "Cola Bottle Baby" is known to absolutely everyone thanks to Daft Punk and that refreshing fizzy groove sounds even better, freer, looser, cooler in its natural state. The lesser spotted "Freaky Deaky Sities" kicks like a loose limbed mule, too. Perhaps a riposte to Roy Ayers "Freaky Deaky" hit the year before, or just another fine trope LA's funk continuum, once again it's the cult fusioneer at his most vibrant. Rest in peace.

Review: Mule Musiq has been an ever-present in the electronic underground but has never gone out of favour in the way so many labels do after their initial rise to the top. This new outing for the New Year puts Kasper Bjorke together with El Agua Es Profound for two originals that come with two remixes. 'Pau' is the sort of elegant elecrtronic sound you expect of this label - serene synths and nice clean drums with subtle hooks. The Bella Boo remix bliss things out even further and then 'Andrea' brings some cheery piano chords to a breezy and sunny groove that is perfect for open air dancing under wispy clouds. There is some extra pace to the Longhair Offshore dub for busier dancefloors.

Review: Black Merlin aka George Thompson is a veteran producer who makes a debut on the Transmigration sub label Crystal Ceremony and soon shows his class. First up is 'Morphik Uniform' with its wispy pads and supple minimal drums saving as a vehicle for interplanetary travel. 'Distance' is a bumpier ride as the broken kick patterns make you move while heavenly pads bring softness up top. There is a mind-melting Millsian element to 'Makio' than burrows deep into the darkest corners of the cosmos and 'Aft Xt' then ends in a hurry with unrelenting drums bubbling away beneath pulsating synths.

Review: Although their collaborative releases as Black Spuma are more sporadic than we may like, Fabrizio Mammarella and Phillip Lauer never fail to deliver the goods on the rare occasions that they get together in the studio. The Hypercall EP is their first joint effort for two years and sees them pitch up on Live at Robert Johnson for the first time following a series of inspired outings on International Feel and Futureboogie Recordings. After opening with the rugged by colourful Italo-disco revivalism of 'Station to Station', the pair variously offer up synth-heavy high-energy excitement (the Bobby Orlando-influenced 'Transpork'), bleeping, rave-igniting hedonism (the pleasingly throbbing, camp and masculine 'Miracoli'), and squelchy, acid-flecked electro ('Data Life').

Review: Enigmatic producer Black Truffle debuted on this label back in February with the first volume of his Black Truffle Edits series. Once again he mixes up disco, funk, boogie and more with 'Aurora' being nice and bright, airy and inviting to get things underway. 'Milk & Honey' ups the energy levels with more spongey synths and plenty of OG disco attitude next to some scorching vocals. Last of all, 'Spa Dance' gets more freaky and funky with some spaced-out synth work and plenty of great guitar riffs underlining the sliding disco drum work.

This new double 12" on Ternesc opens with UK funky drums and wild percussive patterns as well as some signature mangled voices. There is also hyper speed industrial minimalism on 'The Sithe' that captures the sound of a factory in meltdown, spangled synths and eerie dub atmospheres on 'Silver' and unrelenting rave techno on 'Fizz City.' Add in two more hard to define fusions of mutant sound design, busted rhythms and dystopian moods and you have a spell binding EP indeed.

Review: Blind Prophet comes springing into ear shot following recent heavyweight turns on ZamZam and Green King Cuts to lay down the soundsystem gospel for US torch bearers Dub Stuy. 'Good Morning Zion' rides on a tough, swung beat with Daweh Congo on mic duties, cut with the attendant dub on the same side for the disco mix experience should the dance require it. Review: Jay Bliss brings his classy tech house touch to this sixth EP on the Berg Audio label. It begins with the title track which is a futuristic mix of silky and serene synth lines and smooth but propulsive drums. 'Pressure' rocks back and forth on a metallic loop and layers up the balmy pads, while 'Rocket Science' has a more textured feel and zippy little synth details that bring plenty of intrigue. 'Stellar Flux' closes out with another comically inclined fusion of dynamic drums and heady synth patterns, this time with a playful neo-disco undertone.

Review: "Murky Tech Death" was how one critic thought best to describe Blood Incantation. It's not hard to hear what they meant on this 2015 EP from the death metal outfit. It's riff-y but in a mathematical and angular kind of way, with nods to futurism also evident in the lyrical themes that look skywards, beyond the stratosphere, and into the great unknown which humankind still can barely reach due to the limitations of our own technological forward march.
There are moments here so complex the art of listening itself becomes something of an exact science - the lead guitar crescendos of 'Obfuscating The Linear Threshold' for example. Or the rhythmic propulsion of 'Hovering Lifeless'. The result is a masterclass of heavy, doom-y noise that packs musicality and drama into all four tracks.
