Review: It All Comes Down to This is the album latest release from Manchester icons A Certain Ratio, and it's a record that is helmed by producer Dan Carey from Speedy Wunderground. Somewhat returning to their origins, the record presents ten concise tracks with a hint of the group's signature electronic flair. Notably, it's the first recording featuring the core trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop, and Donald Johnson, without any additional collaborators. From their celebrated 1982 album and right up to their dynamic last EP in 2023, this album shows the band's still evolving and still committed to new musical advancements. A testament to their enduring legacy, It All Comes Down to This solidifies A Certain Ratio's place among Manchester's finest.

Review: A Certain Ratio's core trio of drummer Donald Johnson, bassist/vocalist Jez Kerr, and multi-instrumentalist Martin Moscrop make ACR Loco a perfectly fluid and funk album. In fact, on this, their first album in more than ten years, the Manchester post-punk outfit are as funky as they have ever been. Their tried and tested sound gets nicely updated with modern beat driven sounds and plenty of redefines to today's political strife in the lyrics. There are plenty of smooth and cool synth led grooves like 'Get A Grip' and messages of unity on 'Family' that we can all relate to.

Review: A Place To Bury Strangers arrive at their sixth album in the form of their career. The songwriting is strong and brave, the rebooted line-up featuring vocalist and guitarist Oliver Ackermann plus drummer and vocalist Sandra Fedowitz and bassist John Fedowitz really works across the 13 tracks, which were all recorded in seclusion. But these are tunes to be heard in the midst of a writhing, sweaty crowd with its swirling guitars and rampant rhythms. In finding new ground and exploiting it other full, A Place To Bury Strangers have reached new heights here.

Review: Recieved a 'Best New Music' rating by Pitchfork. This may very well be the case, but unlike much so-called "loud" rock and roll that's out there, 'A Place To Bury Strangers' is not loud simply for the sake of it. The sonically overdriven sound they've accomplished is no clumsy accident, but a carefully cultivated and well-maintained entity all its own, fostered by an unbridled passion that's clearly evident in every live show they play and each recording they make. APTBS does not so much play songs as allow them to pour out. They are songs about longing, heartbreak and confusion played extremely well and at a passionately loud volume. While there are obvious reference points - Pornography-era Cure, early Ride, My Bloody Valentine, and pre-1990s Jesus and Mary Chain - the sound is all their own, in part due to singer/guitarist Oliver Ackermann's day job of building custom guitar pedals (see deathbyaudio.net). Coupled with the solid bass of Jono Mofo and the relentless drumming of Jay Space, the APTBS team is a force to reckon with.

Review: Ryan Adams is a man of many faces, and talents. Capable of tearing his own heart out to pen achingly beautiful songs, seemingly written in his own blood, he has a clear understanding of the human condition and how to tap into our most fragile moods and moments. Nevertheless, he remains a controversial character off-stage, from sexual harassment allegations - and his subsequent apologies - to reports of angry voicemails on critics answering machines and asking fans to leave gigs for 'rude outbursts'. Still, his show at New York's iconic Carnegie Hall on 14th May 2022 saw a packed house gather to listen to his work, which this recording offers a wonderful insight into. Stop-you-dead moments are here in abundance, while his clear rapport with fans - on this occasion at least - also stands out. A masterclass in alternative acoustic rock, informed by country sensibilities, listening through hits like 'New York, New York' and 'Come Pick Me Up', alongside deeper fare such as 'Romeo & Juliet' and a cover of Black Sabbath's 'The Wizard', only emphasises what one-man tour de force he is.

It is a full throttle 13 track rock workout with dense and gauzy guitars layered up into impenetrable walls as the vocal wails fight your attention. It is a raw fusion of indie, grunge and shoegaze all the way from Santiago that will remind of classic bands from the late 90s.

Review: Adia Victoria makes a thoroughly welcome return with her third album, A Southern Gothic. From her unmistakable vocal twang to the scratchy tone of her guitar and the bottleneck lurches behind her, she embodies the south of the USA with undeniable flair. Doubling down on that idea for her third record, she conjures up another stellar run of blues with acerbic wit and confessional intimacy woven together in potent fashion. Featuring the likes of Kyahona and Margo Price on 'You Was Born To Die' and Stone Jack Jones on 'My Oh My', this might just be her best album yet.

The sounds here are brilliantly thrilling and high octane across a first record in five years. 26 years after this group formed they still find new heights and fresh sounds as they reference greats like Warren Zevon, Prince, and Zeppelin while also adding their own love of soul and R&B. Frontman Greg Dulli is in typical swaggering and dynamic form on the mic as he leads this one from the front.

And trust us, taking the form of a special limited edition sunburst red and orange vinyl, it's well worth the wait. Receiving a swathe of categorisations from dream pop, dream gaze, to post rock, one thing's for sure - this album is definitely of the dreamy variety. Journeying through a collage of surreal, gently enveloping noise and held against a backdrop of choir-like vocals and picturesque melodies, this is an album that floats into view. Sounds you'll want to sink into time and time again.

Review: RECOMMENDED
It was two in two for Alabama Shakes when they first unveiled this bonafide swamp rock masterpiece. Released in 2015, Sound & Color took the blueprint laid out with Boys & Girls and then kicked up into fifth gear. It's soul. It's blues. It's sweat-soaked funk. Most importantly, though, it's the kind of record that keeps giving the more you listen, sounding equally at home in the 1950s as it does the 2010s.

It's hard to really put into words the level of husky, pained, heart-on-sleeve musicality at the core of this record. Brittany Howard's voice might never again sound as utterly distraught and reflective, pained and somehow filled with hope for a brighter day. Individual readings aside, this is among the finest blues records to land this century, and ranks up there with some of the greats of the 20th, so don't sleep on this edition complete with closing tracks recorded live at the legendary Capitol Studios.

It's the sixth studio album by English rock greats the Alan Parsons Project, with both the eponymous man and his partner in crime Eric Woolfson are on particularly fine form. Originally released in 1982, the fact it was nominated for Best Engineered Album at the GRAMMY Awards a year on, and then won the GRAMMY for Best Immersive Audio Album in 2019 tells you everything there is to know about how well produced this is.

Nevertheless, critics at the time weren't so quick to laud praise on the record, with one Philadelphia Inquirer write-up labelling the release "hopelessly banal", and likening the instrumentation to Paul Mccartney as a manic depressive. Skip forward a few years, though, and it was heralded as a soft pop triumph, combining artistic lyricism with immediate chart accessibility.

Review: The Alarm lead singer and songwriter Mike Peters set up The Twenty First Century Recording Company in Prestatyn, North Wales in 1994 as a way of allowing his band to express themeless freely away from the conventional restrains of other labels. It remains the band's primary home and is where they land now with a remarkable 20th album. It comes after a time of illness and more than 40 years of writing big and anthemic rock tunes but still finds him serving up more of the same with plenty of epic riffs and singalong choruses. Get ready to be punching the air non-stop with this one.

Albarn's latest offering to the musical gods comes in the form of a conceptual record that looks to prove, beyond doubt, that you really can paint pictures in the eyes of minds everywhere through sounds. In this case, it's the picturesque, poetically bleak volcanic landscapes of Iceland - where the former-Blur man now lives - which are vividly rendered through notes, chords, keys and lyrics.

If you've ever been to the island of fire and snow then alongside hot springs and remote cliffs you probably picked up on its sparseness. That's certainly a theme here, with beautiful instrumentation opting for an 'only what's needed' aesthetic, rather than 'more is more'. Opening on the meditative title number, as the journey unfolds we get strange lo-fi indietronic folk, cacophonous walls of shrill sounds, and mournful, ambient strings, all of which sound incredible.

Review: At times it borders on twee, in other moments it has that anger slant of a pure renegade. At no point does it sound in anything short of sweet. In many ways, Warm Chris isn't so much an artist album as it is an album by an artist determined not to sound like themselves, with New Zealander Harding interpreting no less than ten personalities on this latest record.

In theory, that might sound disjointed and lacking in direction, but in truth nothing could be further from the mark. From the lilt of 'Bubbles' to the subtly rousing 'Passion Babe', this is a place where borderline fantastical folk meets alternative rock without sharp edges, but nevertheless packed with personality. In short, album number four and things just keep getting better.

Review: Alex G's real surname is Giannascoli and this is his ninth solo album and fourth for Domino. Hi style is a lush take on rock classics that is heightened by his skills on the production software Garageband. American indie rock colours much of this album with a real tension and melodic beauty in most tunes whiner thoughtful and insular or more acoustic. There is even a hint of industrial rock on 'Blessing' as he muses on environmental collapse while 'No Bitterness' is punchy pop-rock with sleazy texture and plenty of raw emotion.

Review: Just when you thought it was a certainty that all the great, impossible to define bands had found their way to your playlist, along come Algiers. For the newcomers, let's just say you're in for a wild and unfettered treat. To the already-committed, props for paying attention to a group that have quietly - recognition wise at least - been rising to the top of the relevant and aurally groundbreaking list since 2015. Hailing from Atlanta, there's an undercurrent of Deep South rock 'n' roll and blues-tinged grit to things here, but so much more is happening knowing where to start is gonna be difficult. Electronica, gospel, punk, jazz, hip hop, apocalyptic prophecies, and political messaging somehow both obtuse and poetic. In short, Algiers make the vast majority of noise-makers look and sound benign.

Three decades later their seminal sophomore effort, Dirt sounds as good as it ever did and gets an anniversary reissue to mark the occasion. It comes with plenty of powerful drums and big-ass basslines as well as yelping vocals and fuzzy textures that take in a range of emotions and even bigger riffs. This issue features a special insert and comes across four sides of vinyl so it's nice and loud, just as intended.

Review: Arguably one of the most integral tentpoles of the grunge movement, Alice In Chains' seminal sophomore effort, Dirt, changed the game upon its release in 1992. Featuring some of the band's most classic cuts such as, 'Them Bones', 'Down In A Hole', 'Rooster', and, 'Junkhead', to name but a few; the incomparable dynamic of Wayne Staley's iconic vocals and cryptic, yet brutally honest lyricism combined with guitarist Jerry Cantrell's mammoth riffs and delicate nuance, still resides high in the echelons of alternative rock three decades on. For lifers and newcomers alike, this 30-year anniversary edition serves as an ideal opportunity to revisit a genuine classic, far murkier and riddled with antagonistic depths than any of its would-be peers.

Review: Homegrown goth-rock legends, Alien Sex Fiend, hammered their freak flag to the mast on the seminal 1984 sophomore effort, 'Acid Bath'. Produced by Kevin Armstrong (David Bowie, Iggy Pop), the album made clear that the previous year's debut, 'Who's Been Sleeping In My Brain', was far from a once-off fluke, and that the demented psycho-punk pairing of Nik and Mrs. Fiend was a dynamic that would ultimately end up shaping much of the proceeding flamboyant, industrial, gritty, playful, artful, theatrical lunacy the punk and rock scenes would begin to espouse. If there ever was one release to provide the perfect Alien Sex fiend crash course, it's the 'Acid Bath'. Grab this beautiful splattered reissue, and hop in!

'Livin' In Elizabethan Times' is an audacious and oddball cosmic rock concept mini-LP about a comically underwhelming invasion of drunkard aliens. As well as the sheer unadulterated fun of the record, the amount of dense and inventive genre-melting the pair have managed to cram into these four tracks is astonishing - dropping in theremins, sound effects, militaristic horns and much more when you least expect them. They set an interplanetary course from twanging and stomping bluesy opener 'This One's For The Humans', through hypnotic balearic-ish bleep and orchestrated retro-futurist pop, to the huge cosmic disco closer 'Titanic Dance'. At first glance, it's an unashamedly silly and fun offering, but repeat listens will reveal these maverick veterans have woven in far deeper layers of commentary humour and substance.

Review: Psychedelic stoner rock band All Them Witches hail from Nashville, and in the past 10 years they've proven to be a mighty force with a steady run of studio and live albums leading up to this product of the times. No prizes for guessing the context for Live On The Internet, but the main thing is the recording captures the band at their finest. Blistering riffs, big solos and Michael Parks Jr's dusky vocals all coalesce across sixteen tracks spanning their career to date, and as the and themselves advise, you should listen loud, relentlessly and irresponsibly. Who are we to argue?

Review: Is there a more hard-working pair of party-starters than the Allergies' Rackabeat and DJ Moneyshot? The Bristol-based duo have been prolific over the last few years, yet the quality of their work seemingly hasn't suffered. Promised Land, their fifth album, is another invigorating, thrill-a-minute ride through hip-hop/funk/soul/rock/breakbeat fusion, where almost every cut is ripe for dancefloor plays. Highlights include the bluesy breakbeat bustle of 'Working On Me', the scratch-happy, Fatboy Slim-esque fun of 'Jumping Off', growling Dynamite MC hook-up 'Lean On You' (which reminded us a little of Plantlife), soul stomper 'Love Somebody' and 'Are You Ready', where Ugly Duckling's Andy Cooper and singer Marietta Smith both make their mark.

Review: Canadian singer, songwriter and visual artists Allie X - real name Alexandra Ashley Hughes - is a great representative for the resurgent live electro-synth scene. Emerging from the Toronto indie circuit in the mid-2000s, it was a relocation to Los Angeles, a heartland for neon sounds, and early work with producers Circuit and Billboard that first saw an identity begin to form, which is as retro as it is futuristic, picking up scores of fans along the way, including Katie Perry no less. Girl With No Face is her latest long form, and sees the artist again stick her flag confidently in the ground. Tunes bounce, track, soar, step, pump and - at times - fall apart, emotionally speaking, with clear references to the likes of Ladyhawke, Madonna, Kraftwerk, Cocteau Twins and a-Ha, among others. Definitely one to watch, if you're not already.

Review: Pulsar saw Gianluca Salvadori and Leonardo Ceccanti return to Claremont 56 with a second LP of sanguine and psychedelic dub disco under the Almunia name. Arriving roughly two years after Salvadori and Ceccanti served up the sublime Almunia debut long player New Moon, this new album sees the pair of tracks released as singles (the excellent title track and 'The Magician') complemented by six all new productions. From the heavenly acoustic strumming of opening track 'The Awakening' Almunia remain locked in a mood where refined instrumentation is balanced perfectly with a chugging soft edged disco sensibility with the buoyant 'Views From A Blue Train' a particular highlight.

Review: For a band big enough to sell out Madison Square Garden, Alt-J still come across as refreshingly strange proposition, flirting with grandstanding euphoria just as easily as folk-tinged introspection. True to form, on the one hand 'Relaxer' is the sound of the band throwing everything but the kitchen sink - including choirs, orchestras and computer game influences alike - into their delirious melange. Yet on the other there's the same melodic lilt and reflective grace that first endeared them to a surprisingly enormous fanbase five years ago, and the sense of a band as alarmingly ambitious as they are unafraid to be intimate.

Review: Leeds in the UK has been responsible for quite a few of the worlds most loved bands, and alongside the Kaiser Chiefs, Soft Cell and even The Sisters Of Mercy, there's Alt J. As Mercury prize winners in 2012, their meteoric rise to the top sees them with three albums in their wake, and this Reduxer package is an aptly named alternative of sorts to last year's Relaxer LP. With street rhymes and urban beats nestling up alongside strokes of synth pop and Joe Newman's melancholic crooning, heavy collaborations come in from contemporary hip hop artists like Pusha T and Danny Brown. They don't, however, steal the show from the huge range of other vocal talent to be taken in, like Little Simz' devastating opening gambits to the more lyrically exotic affairs from Lomepal and PJ Sin Suela. Crashing style and genre like no one's business.

Review: Appearing as both a standard edition and purple-coloured 'Nightmare Edition' - going for a trademark 'corona effect' with variant artwork - Alt-J here present their most emotionally harrowing and difficult album yet, dealing directly with a series of traumatic experiences experienced by the band's members both in childhood and over the course of the recent pandemic. Hooting, flatuing and honking comes the lead single 'U&ME', in which Joe Newman sings of personal oppression and stress - "pressing down on my face" - to the tune of woodblocks, metal pangs and strong bass licks. Watch out for this Blood Records exclusive edition.

Review: 2012 feels like a very long way back indeed. Nevertheless, we still remember when An Awesome Wave dropped and took the UK, and later a good chunk of Europe, by storm. Alt-J's debut album remains a call to arms for outsiders to take on the mainstream, and a case of setting out your stall to show exactly what you're made of, and how much business you mean.

Straddling folktronica, electronic pop, art rock, and indie, while merging genres and distancing oneself from standard tropes is in itself nothing new, it's the elements that were picked to stay, and those that got removed from each of the styles that made this stand out. The result is a complex, innovative mix that stops short of oppressive intellectualism, and instead just sounds really original.

Review: Alt-J were one of the noughties most surprising success stories. And we mean no disrespect by that - the smart money is on even the band themselves being taken aback by the ferocity with which their first album blew up. Not least given its relative lack of commitment to specific sounds or styles, a landmark release the biggest criticism of which is really the fact it felt unsteady. Like a newborn lamb.
Skip forward two records, and Relaxer is arguably Alt-J finally growing into their own, and finding the confidence to set out a real stall. The personality here is strong, risk-taking pronounced, and ideas wildly varied but in a much more determined way. Is it indie rock? Is it avant pop? At times, it might even be acoustic melancholia. Whatever the label, LP three answered many questions when it landed in 2017 and few have tried to ask more since.

Review: Toronto's Alvvays return for a much anticipated third album five years after their breakthrough record, Antisocialite. As the story goes for so many bands, the last few years have thrown a number of curveballs their way, but they stepped into the studio with Shawn Everett in October 2021 and laid down their new tracks in immediate, urgent fashion. You can hear Everett's touch all over the production, bringing vibrant textures and subtle details into their sound, but at the heart this remains a vehicle for shimmering, electrically-charged songwriting. On Blue Rev Alvvays stake their claim in the premier league of modern day indie rock, and on the strength of these fourteen songs, who are we to argue?

There has been a five-year wait since the last LP but it was worth it as Blue Rev reasserts what made the band great while also bringing new sounds. This is the band's longest album to date and maybe their best with big riffs, driving drum rhythms and plenty of great lyric work. It will be supported by a big tour this fall so tune in and get to know.

Review: Should you find yourself in continental Europe, or the little islands surrounding it, you may be feeling a sense of the autumnal blues upon the release of this European Heartbreak LP. It's far from a morose and downcast listen though, with the choral of Annelotte de Graaf's voice a shining light to lead you through the trepidation of winter. On top of her two law degrees and work for the international war crimes tribunal, this latest opus provides her with a second album following Fading Lines of 2016, and expect spells of tatty pop intertwined with boops and breathy vocals that meet with subtle brass instrumentation, pianos and folky practices, all sung with a slight smug and smirk of discontent.

Review: RECCOMMENDED
Tori Amos has never been one to rush things, nevertheless each time she delivers a new album it feels as though you've been waiting an exceptionally long time to be reunited with her talent. In reality, Ocean to Ocean lands four years after the preceding outing, Native Invader, and that's pretty much an average gap between records for this artist, who has now been releasing long form work since 1992.

What's remarkable is the way she hasn't lost her way in all that time. This is theatrical pop with operatic, classical, and wildly experimental streaks. Perhaps unfair to compare, but it has to be said that if they broke the mould with Kate Bush the managed it again with Amos. We challenge anyone not to be moved and transported by the poetic, piano-rock balladry at play.

Review: You can't help wondering what Atlantic Records were thinking when they rejected Little Earthquakes. Tori Amos' debut album, which finally saw the light of day in 1992, reaching 14 in the UK long form charts at a time when competition in the Top anything was ridiculously fierce, the record stands up very well on its own, trapped in your own listening capsule. More so, it marked the arrival of a truly unique voice who would go on to inspire a bunch of alt-pop sirens.
Of course, the finished article garnered praise from across the critical board, proving that what label executives don't know is often what the rest of us do - originality has far more longevity than a guaranteed number one. Producing timeless singles like 'Silent All These Years', 'China', 'Winter', and, of course, 'Crucify', it's a joy to hear again.

Review: You don't get to call your band Amyl & The Sniffers if the music is anything short of corrosive, in the best possible way. Launching at a serious pace from the off, this is punk at its modern best - a juggernaut of sweat, swearing and uncompromising songwriting that's only rival for your attention comes in the form of riffs and gritty chord instrumentation.

But the Melbourne, Australia band's second LP is far from a simple rehash of the first, which we could have also described in similar terms to those you just read above. This time round things feel more thoughtful, perhaps even patient in certain moments. Of course they still wear 'weirdos' on their sleeves, tongues often firmly placed in cheeks. But there's a depth here to the songwriting, a retro and introspective feeling that reveals far more than the debut album let us hear.

Review: Long before shoegaze and goth were even things, And Also The Trees from Inkberrow in Worcestershire were touching on both genres, building a fan base that included perhaps most notably Robert Smith of The Cure, who invited the band on tour with them and co-produced some of their work. More than four decades on from their first show in 1980, they have a new album that shows not only are they capable of summoning their atmospheric self with ease, but also that they're still evolving musically. Songs like 'The Book Burners' and 'The Seven Skies' see them experimenting with quirky rhythms and a Scott Walker-esque storytelling narrative, although at other moments - see 'Across The Divide' - it's still about setting the guitar pedals to stun and gliding serenely along. Diehard fans will be enthralled, no doubt, but chances are they'll be picking up quite a few new ones with this as well.

Review: Tom Delonge's post-Blink 182 project Angels & Airwaves carried through the pop streak of his roots and strapped it to a more mature strain of indie rock. They refined the approach on their second album, I-Empire, and in the wake of 2021's Lifeforms they've returned to the album for a repress. From the ear-catching anthem 'Everything's Magic' to epic rocker 'Secret Crowds', this is an album loaded with sentimental bombast which has already burrowed deep into the hearts of long time Delonge fans as well as a new generation of pop rockers. Hence the repress, after the album waited 10 years to be issued on vinyl in the first place.

One listen to their output is enough to convince you they're a cut well above the rest, and the panel charged with deciding on the ARIA Awards obviously agree. They've now won lots, and received nominations for countless more.
Life Is Strange certainly reflects their oeuvre quite accurately. Somewhere between contemporary country, blissful indie and romantic, soft and sweet artsy indie, the project itself also reflects their forward-thinking attitude, with this one of a growing number of video game scores that are actually albums in themselves, rather than the kind of straight up soundtracks we're mostly used to.

Review: RECOMMENDED
There's certainly a LOT happening on this exceptionally individualistic album from Berlin-based artiste Anika. A former journalist who auditioned for Geoff Barrow's acclaimed experimental outfit BEAK> in 2010, only to then have her self-titled debut album recorded by the group, while we've been following her movements ever since in many ways this is the real beginning now - the first full length album she has recorded comprising all her own original songs.

And what songs they are. At times you could almost be listening to Nico, or perhaps some latter day rock 'n' roll femme fatale, such as Cate le Bon. It refuses to adhere to genre norms, dramatically introducing elements of opera and theatre to indie frameworks, invoking the spirit of Bat for Lashes, Kate Bush and many more. We're not sure about labels here, which is why hearing it is so damned essential.

In the late 1970's, one woman named Annie Bandez thrust herself into the downtown scene with her punk ensemble Annie and the Asexuals, establishing her nom de plume Annie Anxiety. In the summer of 1983, with the help of legendary dub producer Adrian Sherwood, she began work on what would be her first full length which consolidated all of her creative assets at that time. Features members of Crass, Family Fodder and African Head Charge among others. A seminal dub/industrial masterpiece and featuring the original artwork by Eve Libertine. Review: 'Best Forgotten: Early Demos, Live & Practice Tapes 81-83', is an authorised, Andy Martin approved, compilation of avant-anarcho-punk collective, The Apostles, and an entrancing insight into the early machinations of their rotating cast of experimentalists. Made up of lo-fi recordings committed to tape in London squats throughout the early eighties, with the backdrop of the intense political, racial and cultural tensions of the time, never has there been such an opportunity to hear fly on the wall earfuls of the group's rudimentary electronics and ramshackle instruments in their barest form. Titled after a comment Martin previously made in a 2009 article charting their history, claiming the demos were "best forgotten", but as with all art, once it's bequeathed to the public, that's no longer his choice to make, it's yours.

Review: It's safe to say that Aqualung's eponymous debut album was very much a product of its time. A period when alt-leaning rock-y balladry packed with a forlorn, almost melancholic atmosphere and off-key melodies had taken over the mainstream in a fevered clamour to resurrect an indie scene that had been running out of ideas since the waves of Britpop began to recede.

None of which is a criticism, but rather a prelude to hearing this spectacular record again, at which point you're likely to be transported back to watching the VW Beetle ad that used the track 'Strange and Beautiful', and the first season of Skins (which featured 'Good Times Gonna Come'). Stadium sized quiet bleeding romance, heartbreak, and an introverted attitude, it's no wonder this record catapulted Matthew Nicholas Hales - as the artist was born - into the upper echelons of producers, songwriters and collaborators (the list of who he's worked with is, to put it mildly, impressive).

Review: Aquilo started out on Island Records in 2017 with their debut album Silhouettes, and they quickly followed that up with the similarly atmospheric ii. After that initial rush, the gentle songsmiths have taken a few years out before returning with A Safe Place To Be. In that time, they've been patient in developing their core sound, and blue-eyed balladry is very much still the core tenet of their sound. Subtly ornamenting tracks like 'Our Bones Turn To Stone' with electronic pulses while keeping their vocal harmonies and piano playing at the forefront, it's a mature and considered album which should keep existing fans very happy indeed.

Review: This sixth studio album by Arcade Fire is as anticipated as any in the seminal indie band's long career. It was produced by esteemed Radiohead associate Nigel Godrich in many different locations around the world from El Paso to New Orleans. The band say it was the longest they have ever spent writing together and is focused on the forces that threaten to pull the world apart and how we must resist. WE has a big narrative arc that makes for a real rollercoaster of seven tunes that go from light to dark and back and with plenty of joy expressed amongst the tensions.
