Review: Two titans of African music come together for a collaboration that will sadly never be repeated after the passing of the late Hugh Masekela. Allen's instantly recognisable drumming and Masekela's iconic trumpet are a match made in heaven - after all their paths first crossed back in the 70s thanks to Fela Kuti's galvanizing energy. Forget the throwback stuff trying to capture the spirit of the originators, this IS the originators sounding cool and deadly in every way. Funk lovers, Afrobeat heads, curious ears and dancing souls take heed - this right here is an unmissable transmission from two grandmasters in their field.

Review: Given that it's been 14 years since French producer Hardrock Striker established the Skylax label, this retrospective catalogue mix-up has been a long time coming. Old friend DJ Sprinkles handles disc one, delivering a mix that brilliantly blends her uniquely dubby and spaced-out take on house music with dusty, soulful and largely U.S-centric deep house jams from the likes of Sameed, Lady Blaktronika, Chez Damier, Joey Kay and Carlos Nilmmns. On the second disc, Hardrock Striker focuses on more recent label material, whizzing through a swathe of tactile, deep and groovy retro-futurist cuts from the likes of Octa Octa, Niko Marks, Groove Riddim and Garage Shelter.

Review: The third album from Marika Hackman, and arguably her most honest and exposed to date. An artist who has tangibly progressed from what was already a head start, it's a complex record that seems to be the sum of the artist's previous parts. A proud and forthright declaration of someone arriving at where they want to be wouldn't be putting it too far. It's scuzzy, desolate, bleak and then at the same time energetic, poised, guttural, disco. Tracks such as "Send My Love" couldn't be more emotionally charged, but nor could they be more inviting- somewhere between this life and the next- inviting and then visceral. Flip it and find "Conventional Ride" and "Come Undone" as two tracks that are entirely different but share one thing in common; a heartbreaking work of extraordinary genius.

Review: Famed for their New Orleans style brass band covers - most notably a riotous Prodigy medley and tasty takes on Toto's "Africa" and Blackstreet's "No Diggidy" - the Hackney Colliery Band has decided to do things differently on their latest full-length excursion. As the title suggests, "Collaborations Volume 1" sees them join forces with a dizzying array of artists from the worlds of jazz, soul, funk, Afrobeat and hip-hop. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the Afro-gospel brilliance of Angelique Kidjo and Roundhouse Choir hook-up "Mm Mm", the sunrise Afro-jazz breeze of Netsanet (featuring Mulatu Astatke), and the urgent stomp of percussion-laden workout "Crushing Lactic" with Tom Rogerson.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from UK funk stalwarts - and noted Mark Ronson collaborators - The Haggis Horns, so it would be fair to say that the ever-changing collective's fifth album is long overdue. The Leeds-based band apparently worked on it for two years, and you can tell: alongside their usual horn-heavy deep funk workouts and instrumental expressions of their influences (think the Meters, James Brown, Kool & The Gang and so on) you'll also find an ear-catching array of vocal numbers featuring the rasping, soulful voice of regular guest singer (and Hot Damn member) John McCallum. The result is an album oozing with good grooves, good times and even better horn arrangements.

Review: Given that "power trio" Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi have released numerous acclaimed albums on Black Truffle, it seems fitting that they've returned with a new set to mark the label's 50th release. The five tracks - all of which boast suitably epic titles - were actually recorded in 2015 as part of a now near legendary performance at Tokyo venue SuperDeluxe, though this is the first time the recordings have been released. Musically, what we get is a raw, distorted and intense blend of skittish, loose-limbed drums, fuzzy bass, screeching guitars, spooky Hammond organ lines, wild aural textures (a by-product of their extensive use of effects pedals) and bi-lingual vocals from Haino. It's a pretty sweaty and out-there affair, but the energy and intensity is infectious.

Review: It would be fair to say that Nick Hakim's new album - his third, following 2017's breakthrough set "Green Twins" - is not a barrel of laughs. It is, though, something of a stunner. So while the lyrics are thoughtful, weighty and heartfelt, mixing social and political commentary with the kind of care-worn personal introspection he does so well - the music is stirring and emotion-rich, offering a take on soul that fuses grandiose, wall-of-sound production (read: lots of reverb) with densely layered backing vocals, snare-heavy beats, and slightly psychedelic instrumentation that recalls both the glory days of conscious soul and the kind of lo-fi soul that revels in its stripped-back looseness. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with the epic "Qadir" and super-sweet "Crumpy" initially catching the ear.

Review: Available on CD for the first time outside Japan, these eight tracks come from the Kyle Hall archives, all recorded by the young producer before the turn of the decade, and is presented as a homage to where Kyle lived at the time in his father's basement on the west side of Detroit on Joy Rd. From the outset, Hall's second album is loose, melodious, heady and synthesizer-heavy, with broken beats and wild, experimental rhythms combining effortlessly with jazz, jazz-funk, boogie, soul, Herbie Hancock and '80s electro influences. It makes for thrilling and hugely enjoyable listening and offers proof of Hall's musicianship and ability to repackage a wide range of influences.

Review: In recent years, Eddie Halliwell has cast off the shackles of hard house and embraced a softer sound, whilst still retaining a keen ear for the anthemic builds and drops associated with trance and hard dance. It's this electro house-goes-trance sound that's explored here, on his first full-length mix for main room dance specialists Toolroom. It's as energetic, uplifting and smile-inducing as you'd expect, offering a mix of darker moments, strobe-bright builds and a smattering of his own re-edits. With some Toolroom exclusives thrown in for good measure, it should prove an enticing proposition for fans of main room dance.

Review: Although she's offered up plenty of high-grade DJ mixes in the past, this volume in the "DJ Kicks" series marks Laurel Halo's first commercially available mix-up. The sometime Hyperdub producer has dutifully delivered something rather special, somehow joining the dots between 29 diverse and disparate cuts in the manner of a true turntable maestro. Beginning with the melodious experimentalism of her own "Public Art", Halo giddily charges between mutant industrial funk (Stallone The Reducer, Final Cut), thrusting electronic disco (Red Axes), deep techno (Parris), mind-altering acid-style intensity (Rrose), stomping, sweat-soaked peak-time techno (Machinewoman, FIT Siegel), polyrhythmic bass music (Facta, one of her Livity Sound collabs with Hodge) and an impressive array of cuts that defy easy categorization. The resultant all-action mix is nothing less than stunning.

Review: These days, trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader Matthew Halsall is among the most storied names in British jazz, but that wasn't the case when he released his debut album "Sending My Love" in 2008. It seems fitting, then, that he's decided to re-introduce us to the album via a first ever vinyl edition that also includes a previously unreleased piece from the period, the bittersweet, slowly unfurling melancholy that is "This Time" (a cut that sounds like it should be soundtracking messy big screen break-ups and montages of unhappy lovers walking slowly in the rain). The original set remains a fine collection of modal-influenced jazz, with Halsall's various emotion-rich solos playing a far more prominent role than they have on his more recent albums.

Review: Since he released his first album 11 years ago, bandleader, trumpeter and composer Matthew Halsall has proved to be one of British jazz's standout talents. In recent years he's delved into soul-jazz and big band jazz territory, so it's intriguing to find that "Oneness" is a much more spiritual, pared-down and minimalistic affair. Using a mixture of droning Indian instrumentation, languid and leisurely harp motifs, selective horn solos, melancholic trumpet lines and occasional traditional jazz instrumentation, Halsall has conjured up a series of meditative pieces that count among his most beguiling works to date. It may surprise a few listeners, but many more will find it enchanting, otherworldly and emotion-rich.

Review: You could argue that, of any scene, the pop world has been the biggest beneficiary of the democratisation of access to music. After all, while chart irrelevancy continues to haunt, we've seen a real renaissance in and among the trash, with a resurgence of unfettered poignancy to the songs themselves, and a slew of soul searching stars in ascent. You could also argue that Halsey is the finest of this crop of new schoolers, with "Manic" her finest hour to date. A record that contains both US and UK number ones, but also hidden classics worthy of any "Best B-Sides" playlist you'd want to compile, it calls upon references from relatively unlikely places, for example trap, in its quest for universally acknowledged refinement. R&B, reroofed-future garage rock and even country are also here, making for a soundtrack as arresting vocally as it is instrumentally.

Review: In the summer of 1981, occasional collaborators Herbie Hancock and Carlos Santana joined forces for what turned out to be a unique, one-off performance at Tokyo's Under The Sky jazz festival. The set was recorded by NHK Radio and broadcast shortly afterwards in truncated form, but for one reason or another has never previously been released. This double-disc set offers up the entire performance, which featured Hancock and Santana - along with a top quality backing band - performing a mixture of dazzling jazz and Latin funk-fusion versions of familiar favourites ('Watermelon Man', 'Round Midnight', a riotous set-closing version of 'Saturday Night') and improvised pieces that brilliantly showcase the immense musical talents of both legendary musicians. A must-have.

Review: In many ways, The Invisible Girls was one of the more curious products of the Factory Records production line. Initially founded by legendary producer Martin Hannett and keyboardist Steve Hopkins in 1978 to provide backing tracks for poet John Cooper Clarke, they went on to release a number of singles with singer/songwriter Pauline Murray. Intriguingly, this first retrospective ignores their work with Clarke and Murray, instead focusing on largely unreleased experiments that touch on ambient, jazz, wayward electronics, Section 22 style post-punk darkness, and occasional forays into dub disco-influenced new wave noodling. It's a fascinating collection, and includes a suite of tracks ("All Sorts of Heroes") that brilliantly pitches Hopkins' jazz-influenced piano playing against Hannett's vivid imagination with predictably thrilling results.
