Love Without A Heart
Love Without A Heart (Brey Oh & Trix)
Review: Having collaborated on "Father, Father", Julio Bashmore further cements his clearly fruitful relationship with sometime hand towel model and possessor of a delicate voice Javeon McCarthy for the latest drop from the fledgling but impressive PMR label. This time McCarthy is in the spotlight as "Love Without A Heart" showcases the full range of his vocal talents over a burning future boogie backing from senor Bashmore that simmers brilliantly. Die Barbie Musik Kollektiv usher forth alumni Brey for his first remix endeavour - which is pretty impressive given the results. Lending the track a more percussive shoulder lean, Brey clearly has fun messing around with McCarthy's vocal on a remix that is full of hard to predict rhythmic deviations. Earnest endeavours from all involved.

King Wing - "4 Da Hunniez" (6:12)
Will Benson - "Sea Circus" (6:35)
Review: Mechanistic vector lines and cold, hard angles point acute on the latest V/A from Punchline, on which featuring artists don new guises and exchange blows with first-timers. Though our ears aren't trained well enough to be able to tell who is behind each of these smackers, we must say we're special fans of Jack U Late's analogue-jammed 'Stay', whose quickscoped FX and tenderised drums prove a surreal jaunt. King Wing's '4 Da Hunniez' is a comparatively heavy speed garage number garnishing the flip; the track could hardly prepare us for the dactylic 4-step closer 'Sea Circus', whose toothy lasers and julienned beats pack more umami than a packet of burnt crisps.

Review: Rhythm N Vibe treats us to four different and equally brilliant garage cuts here from four different and equally brilliant artists. Marc Cotterell opens up with the slinky and dusty drums of '96 Is Back' powered by a rasping bassline. Jason Ward then brings some fresh 90s sounds with a neon baseline and diva vocals on 'The Meaning' while J Erazo keeps it deep and paired back on the sublime 'The Pulse' which is a real late night warmer. Paul French then layers up nice fresh and bumping drum funk on his lovely number 'Jump' (unreleased dub). There is lots to love here on a very useful EP.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: There's always a shot of dopamine that hits when Plastik People unveil another of their impeccably formed garage 12"s. Bringing that bumping New Jersey sound back as a source of pride and pleasure, they've got some seriously in demand cuts on here. Hoff's edit of Cultured Pearls' "Mother Earth" has long been an in demand jam tucked away on a double pack of major label remixes, but now its available in all its glory. Night Society's "You Turn Me On" is a fierce, incredibly funky bumper, and J. J. Carn's "I Don't Know Why" rocks that MIDI sax vibe like no other.

Diaz kicks off with 'Like Dis' which is all classic US house drums and bouncy bass, then Timmy P & Lunoize's 'Ouch' is a swirling, vocal-laced party starter. Swift then offers 'Burning' which is a lively garage house cut with throwback diva vocals. Review: Reptile Mob is an all-new sub-label from the revered GLBDOM that is focussed on garage house and bassline. Its first drop was a killer and now this second outing is a various artists collection featuring six standout and bass-heavy jams. It's garage on the A-side and speed garage on the B-side so chose your weapon: Groovy D's 'Outta My Mind' is a sweet shuffler drenched in soul, there's grit in the grooves of 'Babylon' (U-Tah vocal dub) and Highrise layers up the 2-step sounds. Review: Reptile Mob is a newly launched, vinyl-only sub-label of the well-regarded GLBDOM imprint. It kicks off with a five-track various artists release that pays homage to the garage sound. 'Don't Know It' by Highrise opens up with a distantly 90s vibe, then Sky Joose shows his class on 'On The Shores' with its hard-edged bassline and full-throttle drums. Johnny U-Tah works some re-pitched and time-stretched vocals to perfection on 'Voices In My Head', with further gems from The Thunderkats whose 'Melatron' is a piano-laced bumper and last of all Jay Ward's 'Everything That I Need' brims with vocal lushness. Review: Oi oi garage crew, get locked into this one and you won't be disappointed. Introspekt and Jay Ward take once side each with the latter going first. His 'Work Me Gahdammit' is all scuffed up beats, rolling kicks and well placed vocal chops. The D-Dubz 96 dub brings a more brazen and old school feel with classic melodic motifs rinsing down. Ward offers the bump n grind of 'How U Want It' which then becomes more heavy, dark and late night with the Yosh remix. Solid and reliable garage sounds.

Review: SPIL Records makes its debut in the world of vinyl with a new 12" featuring fresh sounds from label head Jack Swift and one from Scott Diaz while remixes are taken care of by a pair of UK legends in Zed Bias and Jeremy Sylvester. Swift's 'Perfection' opens up with some well swung and dusty garage-house beats and a nice warped bassline. It's then over to Bias for his 25 Years Deep Remix which brings some prickly 2-step vibes. Scene Girl
2 Hot
Review: Keen observers of the Night Slugs movement will have noticed a consistent stream of Jam City tracks featuring in the DJ sets, charts, mixes and weekly Rinse FM shows performed by Messrs Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 which even predate NS as a label entity. As Night Slugs draws close to a near perfect first year of business, they quit with the teasing and finally unveil the debut proper EP from Jam City. "Magic Drops" has been a staple of the extended NS family DJ set for yonks now so anyone with a semblance of club going in them will be more than familiar with the pressurised crunk grind meets blissed out keys and sludge drunk synths Eski riddim tribute. What really impresses is the richness in sonic detail throughout - you can listen to "Magic Drops" ten times in a row and find something different to captivate you. "Scene Girl" retains the industrial pressure style percussion, but lays down A saw tooth synth wash that positively bullies its way to the forefront, whilst "2 Hot" drops some half step menace courtesy of the massive cloud of outergalactic synth tension. This release combined with the preceding Refixes EP proves to be an auspicious portent of things to come in 2011!

Now We Relate
Review: Jam City's Classical Curves remains one of the 2012's most unique albums, and "How We Relate To The Body", one of the album's standout tracks receives an extended 12" mix on this latest Night Slugs white label. A screaming piece of futuristic echo-chamber house characterised by its squealing synths, smooth piano and wobbling sub-bass, its nonetheless upstaged on this disc by the all new track "Now We Relate". A 9 minute epic which stretches out Jam City's hyperreal house template like a piece of elastic, it constantly hovers on the edge of mayhem for what seems like an eternity. Keeping the kick drum back until halfway through, its peak time stabs skipping maniacally like a broken record before dropping in with all the force of some lost Underground Resistance production. Essential.

The Courts (12" mix)
The Nite Life (feat Main Attrakionz)
Review: Of all the producers to surface and develop on the Night Slugs label, Jam City has remained perhaps the most intriguing; his paucity of releases combined with a distinctly enigmatic air (making film soundtracks and appearing in music videos with Kindness in his spare time) adds credence to the thought this is an individual whose talent lies far beyond the capacity to please today's ADD audience. With anticipation for Classical Curves - the soon come album from Jam City - rising with every appearance of covert track previews on a certain popular video content site, Night Slugs add further flames to the clamouring fires with the release of The Courts on their vinyl only White Label offshoot. By now you should have peeped the visually stunning 3D video that accompanies "The Courts" and be aware of the percussive excellence of the track - expertly rewiring sampled basketball court action to a club ready mainframe that naturally involves plenty of rhythmic twists. It comes backed with "The Nite Life", a collaboration with hotly tipped Oakland rap duo Main Attrakionz which demonstrates Jam's prowess at laying down a rhythmic template for others to shine on too. Quite the talent!

Aqua Box
Countess
Barely A Trak
Review: Lesser spotted Night Slugs alumni Jam City offers an auspicious insight into what we might expect from his often hinted at debut album on the startling Waterworx EP. It's likely you will already have a taste for the three tracks here after snippets appeared unannounced on the NS Soundcloud, however those 90 second samples don't fully hint at the magic on display here! "Aquabox" shoots muscular stabs of bass and neon flourishes skywards over a stumbling steppahs rhythm, pausing briefly to let the crystalline jah infused undercurrents shine. On the flip, "Countess" sits alongside the recent John Roberts remix of George Fitzgerald in the "what do we even call it" stakes - if there ever was a track to definitely silence the wanton genre givers it would be this - with a tight strutting bruk riddim subjected to a schizophrenic array of snaking arpeggios and vocal squeals. "Barely A Trak" is really where those snippets don't reveal Jam City's brilliance, combining the rising pressure of the synth ripples with simmering stop start grime patterns before a genius left turn lends the track a utopian finish.

Satori (Jon Convex remix)
Review: Zombie Zombie fans will no doubt be pleased to hear the duo have put the final touches to a long overdue follow up to their debut 2008 LP A Land For Renegades, which is set to grace the shelves in Spring of next year. Ahead of that the band's Etienne Jaumet returns to his own solo endeavours with the brooding, hypnotic synth wave of Satori. Anyone who indulged in the refined sounds of Jaumet's solo album Night Music will find much to enjoy in "Satori", a widescreen, expansive sojourn through rich analogue waves of cosmic sludge. Intriguingly Versatile offer a true curveball of a remix commission in enlisting Jon Convex to add his own perspective to the track, and it's a wise choice as the Instra:mental man retains the rich synth feeling but adapts it to a darkly intoxicating 808 flex that impressively transforms "Satori" into a club ready entity.

Review: After previously helming the second NorthSouth release alongside Bilal, Berlin-based minimal house maverick Christian Jay returns to the burgeoning label with more of his distinctive grooves that draw as much on bass-heavy garage and dubstep as they do on stripped back 4/4. The tempo is ramped up on "Reform," which features a plethora of wriggling sound design flourishes to accentuate the subtle swing on the track, while "Deactivating HAL" places the same sound palette in a more crafty 2-step framework that ranks among the most distinctive tracks Jay has produced to date. On the flipside. Rob Amboule follows up strong turns on 20:20 Vision, Nixwax and OSMAN with his own deep-diving dancefloor constructions. For the occasion, he reissues his track 'Pearl Leaf' which sits in between the worlds of Bicep, Sasha and UKG. It has floating pads and airy, organic beats that carry you away on a melancholic mood with deeply buried vocals adding a blurry, heart-tugging hook. On the flip are two new and unheard jams. Review: Londoner Jeigo has always had a knack for intricate and melancholic production. His emotive sounds span breaks, garage and dub and gave rise to a superb album Cerulean back in 2022. This new outing on Air Miles is another sophisticated one that shows some different sides. 'Fig' is a dusty and lo-fi mix of knocking, woody broken beat patterns and pitched-up vocal snippets that bring a sense of pain. 'Act Like You're Strong' is heads down, lip-curling UKG with shuffling and weighty drums and naughty bass. '3-5 Working Days' is somewhere in between - both club-ready but also with post-Burial vocals that tug at the heartstrings. There is a blissed-out feel to the optimistic melodic bubbles and angelic vocals of 'Found Me' that means the EP closes in lush fashion.

Opening track "In Her City" has the sheen of Edgar all over it, but the ravey chops have a Machinedrum cheek to them. What's most striking though is that as a whole, the result is wonderfully fresh. Hailing from Bristol, Josi has built a reputation with labels like Innamind and Nervous Horizon, known for his raw, unrelenting style. But here, he takes a step into slightly murkier waters, layering euphoric vocal snippets with deeper, atmospheric textures that give the track an interesting push and pull. 'Make It Better' kicks off with swung breakbeats that quickly dissolve into a blend of chopped vocals and rumbling sub-bass, offering moments of pure euphoria while maintaining an underlying tension. There's a certain balance here, as the energy ping-pongs between light and dark, but it never feels out of sync. Josi manages to hold onto a grounded, gritty feel, all while pulling in atmospheric elements that make the track feel spacious and immersive. On the flip, things get darker with 'Restless Sleep' where muffled drums and deep, growling basslines add a sense of foreboding as shadowy Buchla tones weave through. The UKG-inspired samples mix with the heavy low-end, creating a sense of unease without ever feeling too overbearing. It's a track that knows when to hold back and when to let the tension fully break looseishowing off Josi's knack for creating complex, layered sounds that still pack a visceral punch. This release feels rooted in the underground but offers something fresh for the forward-thinking listener, leaving a lingering impression long after the first listen.

Grime Light
Review: Starting out as a producer for the Slew Dem crew, grime producer JT The Goon has since begun to gain attention from the likes of London's Boxed crew and Keysound's Blackdown with his unreleased instrumentals. The Twin Warriors EP on the Oil Gang label represents his first official release, and contains four instrumentals which bridge the gap between grime's old and new schools. The flutes of the title track recall fellow grime figure Slackk's recent forays into Eastern melodies, while "Ice Cube" is a veritable frenzy of square waves and explosive percussion and reloads. "Eski Moment" isn't quite the throwback you might expect from the title, containing a healthy amount of dramatic brass, while "Grime Light" provides the EP's standout anthem moment. Old grime, new grime, it doesn't matter - this is great.

Review: UK garage is in a purple spot right now. Gather have been onto that for a while and their parties in Southend-on-Sea have become essential for those in the know, with guests spots from all the key heads - Der 2, Perception, Riz Le Teef. Now they start a new label with local-sit producers Jubley and 9TRANE serving up two tracks each. The beats are dark, heads down and serious, with some smart samples and killer bass. It's a sensational start that is sure to sell out and be the start of something special.

Thinking Too Much
Where The Helios
Review: Since he was hand picked out of Soundcloud obscurity for release on Four Tet's Text imprint, the young sweep haired Londoner Juk Juk (or Caleb Waterman) hasn't put a foot wrong. This second release on the fledgling Nomos label is notable for Waterman's ease at approaching the art of peak time music with "Thinking Too Much". (Don't fret, this is peak time music in a manner similar to Four Tet and his melodno contemporaries as opposed to some ill advised EDM direction.) Commencing with an intro that will lull unsuspecting types into a sense of calm, the track is a wonderfully layered trip through psychedelic, spectrally charged techno in full flight and confirms Waterman to be a real talent. Calmer waters are traversed on the flipside track "Where The Helios", with familiar dream-like expanses playfully weaving with the crisp sounding drum rhythms in a manner similar to The Field's first LP.

Review: East London MC Jus Rival teams up with Camden's Joe Fire here for a hard-hitting new track 'G.M.S (Gun Man Sound).' Following their previous collaboration on 'Dangerous Settings,' the duo builds on their undeniable chemistry for another explosive release with some serious low-end heft. Produced by grime heavyweight Spooky Bizzle, the brass-laced instrumental provides the perfect backdrop for both MCs to shine and Jus Rival opens with a catchy hook and sharp bars, while Joe Fire takes over with a playful, yet commanding verse. Accompanied by a slick visual directed by Honey JD,tihs one is defined by its dynamic delivery and relentless energy.

Review: Wrong'uns is a newly established label designed to serve up dirty jams for the dancefloor. For this second outing, they look to a beat-making crew of miscreants in Just Olly, Mehlor, Jake Rollinson and Joejoemojo who all offer up one jam each. Just Olly's 'Tougher' has filthy basslines and lip-curling menace in the stepping drums. Mehlor's low ends are just as warped and the drums and percussion are just as kinetic, then Rollinson's 'Trip The Funk' is a sinner blend of synth modulation sand bleeping dial tones that is full of fun for the club. Last but not least, 'Shake The Funk' is a catchy slammer with big breaks and sirens designed to blow up any sound system.

Review: BEEYOU Records continue their infatuation with apiculture and bouncy tech house on The Worker EP, featuring another finely selected cast of buzzing beatmakers. Le Louche and Mehlor team up for the sprightly 90s-licked tones of 'Beat Back To', which features a deadly garage hook and a cascade of zippy FX around the nagging swing of the drums. ADMNTi keeps the pressure up with the twitchy delights of 'E3 Shaolin', while Casey Spillman gets busy with some rubbery bass on 'Just A Sip'. Joey Jackson takes things deeper without losing the punch on 'Made This Wearing One Slipper'.

Review: High profile dubstep production team Magnetic Man (aka Skream, Benga and Artwork) may soon be joining the realm of Russian oligarchs and Arab billionaires - they're on the verge of buying Surrey non-league footy side Farliegh Rovers - but they take some time out from negotiations to release this 12" on their own imprint. "Getting Nowhere" featuring John Legend was one of the most languid moments on the popstep trio's chart busting debut album, and the original mix appears here alongside remixes from Breakage and Skream. Four our money it's the skittering tribal drums and trancey synths of Skream's version that stands out as the EP's finest moment.

Review: Frankfurt's Traffic Records is going string and holding their corner with mighty fury. This is because they've managed to build a little crew, showcased here by tunes from all of the label's members. Martyne and Jacob offer "Transit Transit", a old-school electro monster with a subtle nod to NYC, Bodin & Jacob's "Geddo" is an icy electro stormer that leaves a more metallic taste, and "Infinitum" by Patrick Klein rolls out the breakbeats over a spacey, liquid-like groove. The surprise comes from an appearance by Giegling casual Edward, who drops a more abstract, minimal-like stepper named "Elipsis". Imagine Villalobos doing broken beat and you're somewhere there.

Review: A serious wedge of sound is this new heavyweight vinyl from Hardline. It's a three track collaboration between Milon and Job de Jong that marks the label's 15th fantastic outing. Track 1 opens proceedings with some slapping snares and punchy drum kicks that are topped with dial tones, clipped vocals and warped pads. The second cut brings some retro garage motifs and pumping drum work as well as a filthy dirty bassline that will get faces screwed up in disgust. Last of all, the closer goes for a popping bit of minimal funk with fresh drum sounds and a nice wiggling groove.

Roska - "Without It" (Terror Danjah Harddrivin' remix)
J Kenzo - "Let It Move"
Tickles - "Da Growier"
Review: Some previously digital only releases from Roska's Kicks & Snares imprint get a well deserved vinyl pressing on the great 12" release. On the A-Side is Terror Danjah's remix of Roska's "Without It", the original's restrained approach, with its simple snare pattern and dramatic strings, into somewhat darker places, replacing the original's UK funky template with a jungle vibe, complete with twisting, acidic bassline. On the B-Side, J Kenzo's "Let It Move" has a positively electro-breaks feel, with the stretched-wide synths punching away over heavily compressed beats. Finally, Tickles' incendiary track "Da Growler" is built around a particularly low and rumbling bass drone and pitched down vocal snippets which gives the track its name, whilst delicate percussion gives it a light, swinging rhythm. A fine package from one of UK Funky's most exciting labels.

Review: The debut EP from The Set Records arrives as a vinyl-only offering, shunning digital realms in favour of pure analogue sound. This limited edition record shines a light on six standout artists - five from the UK and one Dutch - who've carved out their own corners of the deeper house spectrum. From the first groove, TSR001 pulls listeners into a nuanced exploration of house music's more intricate layers. Garage rhythms hum next to progressive beats, with each track offering its own distinct energy. It feels like a journey into the heart of a dancefloor before the lights come up - familiar yet full of surprises. What makes TSR001 especially exciting is how each artist brings something different to the table. There's a sense of variety that never strays too far from the EP's overarching vibe, which is smooth, sophisticated, and unmistakably underground. These are tracks for the heads, the DJs and anyone who knows the satisfaction of holding something rare and tangible in a digital world. The lack of digital presence ensures this isn't just a release but a coveted collectible. Collectors, be warned - missing this means missing out completely. V.A. TSR001 is here, it's elusive, and it's gone before you can press play twice.

Review: US garage doesn't get more bumping than this - of course it's Plastik People flying the flag for the evergreen sound where swing is king and a diva vocal is more than welcome. Soledrifter wastes no time in diving into the funky house mindset on this various artists 12", keeping things heady and tracky where it counts before Snazzy Trax brings in a cheeky twist on a bona fide garage classic, now called "The Experience." Joe Olindo shines bright with the sexy, sharply pointed "How I Knew," and then Lombard Street takes things smoother on closing track "What's Wrong."
