Review: More lo-fi house to keep the kids dancing in the vein of Lobster Theremin and E-Beamz up for grabs here, courtesy of new imprint Koepel out of Belgium. On the Object EP are three 'evolving tracks, with a trace of melancholia and wayfaring, that unveil the artist's explorative nature'. We couldn't have said it better ourselves! The A side cut is an emotive journey that soons gets its groove on via those super compressed and thumping rhythms that break through all the smoky layers of tape saturation. On the flip, the second cut is a droning and tunnelling hypnotic techno number that could sure have crossover appeal and finally "003" goes for that classic acid house era vibe.

Review: Amongst those that keep track of these things, German trio Hyonobeat are considered proto-techno pioneers. While it's not known whether Detroit's Belleville Three were fans, you could argue that Hynobeat's rhythm-focused approach pre-dated both techno and Chicago house. Thanks to this fine retrospective from Dark Entries, you can judge for yourself. The material included was all recorded between 1983 and 1986, with the wild, off-kilter polyrhythms and ragged TB-303 lines of "The Arumbeya Fetish", mutant electro of "Kilian" and high-octane thrust of the decidedly out-there "Mission in Congo" standing out. Remarkably, Hypnobeat would chain together drum machines and bass synthesizers to create their tracks - a practice that would later become common during the acid house era.

Review: On his previous albums, 1977 and 1983, Rune Reilly Kolsch explored different aspects of his childhood, delivering music inspired by favourite formative memories. Predictably, this third full-length also has an autobiographical bent, inspired as it was by what the Danish producer calls his "difficult early teenage years". As he was dealing with both puberty and the break-up of his parents' marriage, it's perhaps unsurprising that 1989 features more music that's melancholic in tone, with extensive use of evocative string arrangements, rough-round-the-edges synthesizers, yearning pianos and nods towards early German techno. Clearly, young Kolsch was prone to teenage mood swings, too, because there's also plenty of surging tech-house beauty and heartfelt dancefloor positivity amongst the glistening poignancy.

Review: Midland apparently spent much of his years fantasizing about one day playing at superclub Fabric, so it's perhaps fitting that the globe-trotting producer has finally been given a chance to contribute to the club's long-running mix series. Beginning with the woozy, off-kilter electronica of Georgia's "Pey Woman" and ending with his own "First Tube", the mix sees Midland effortlessly join the dots between breakbeat-driven house, skewed analogue techno, hypnotic leftfield tech-house, warm and fuzzy ambient house, quirky broken techno shufflers, throbbing electro and lots more besides. What's perhaps most impressive - aside from the quality and subtle variety of music on show - is the DJ/producer's willingness to flip the script and allow for lengthy beat-less intros, confirming his belief that mixes should be about more than a simple linear journey.

  8. Vagalumes Piralampos (feat Arto Lindsay) (6:03)
Review: Milanese percussionists Ninos Du Brasil were a surprising choice for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions a few years back: an imprint more usually affiliated with new wave industrial and power electronics. Their rhythmic backbone said to be derived from Brazilian carnival music where they fuse influences of punk, tribal techno and batacuda. Anyone fortunate enough to witness their electrifying live shows can attest to these disparate influences colliding wonderfully. It's yet more powerfully hypnotic, wall of sound rituals on offer with their third full length entitled Vida Eterna; however there are a few pleasant surprises too, such as on "No Meio Da Noite" where their trademark rhythms are meged with a fierce warehouse techno stomp. It calls to mind the polyrhythmic futurism of James Ruskin and Oliver Ho back in the late nineties. Speaking of which "A Magia Do Rei II" sounds like Gymnastics era Regis gone to Carnival. Elsewhere, the powerful wailing on "Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido" resounds through layers of feedback and delay that reminds us of Baile funk and there's also a collboaration with the legendary Arto Lindsay.

Review: Ostgut Ton has been trailing Steffi Doms' third album, World of the Waking State, as a departure for both artist and label. Certainly, it's an altogether more considered, complex and musically expansive set than its' predecessors. It's rich in evocative electronic soundscapes, whose scuttling rhythms look to IDM and vintage "intelligent techno" for inspiration. The assembled musical elements - think bubbly and occasionally wonky electronics, sweeping synthesized strings, deep space chords and Motor City melodies - often tend towards the heart-aching and melodious, lending the set a genuinely poignant feel. When Doms decides to change tack and head towards the dancefloor - see the ghostly, industrial electro assault of "Mental Events", sparkling positivity of "Cease To Exist" and bustling, intergalactic title track - the results are equally as inspired.

Review: Berlin's lady of ladies, Steffi, returns to familiar settings with this latest album, a deep and calculating blend of technoid sonics for the mighty Ostgut Ton imprint. The DJ-producer has been known to deliver absurdly twisted sets at the Berlin institution over the years, but the majority of her work has been made up of short collaborations and comparatively more dance-centric material. World Of The Waking State feels like a change of gear, where the focus on dance has been replaced by something much more imperceptible and inward looking. From "Different Entities" to "All Living Things, the opening three tunes point to a noticeable struggle behind the production desk, a deep sense of melancholia which enables these spectacular electronic gems from having cross-cultural appeal. The flip of the first disc further experiments with the deeper end of the sound palette, which is something that can be said about this entire LP. While this might get the Ostgut hype at first, the passage of time will undoubtedly get people to see it as a classic. What an album - very hotly recommended.

Review: Since launching five years ago, Chris Smith's Central Processing Unit label has risen to become one of the finest purveyors of electro, IDM and intelligent techno on the planet. Here, Smith has decided to celebrate the story so far with a luxurious, double-vinyl set featuring brand new remixes of CPU catalogue classics. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the braindance-goes-techno rush of Missqulater's remix of CN's "Zener Diode Blues" and the Motor City-meets-the-Steel City brilliance of Plant43's rework of Blixaboy, to the sludgy, slo-mo bliss of Noumen reworking B12, and the latter's thrillingly beautiful interpretation of Ms Jynx's "Diving Loop". In other words, it's a brilliant collection of analogue electronic music from some of the greatest talents in the game. We wouldn't have expected anything less, to be honest.
