If the success of any drone inspired ambient album lies in its ability to fire the imagination, then Asmus Tiechens' Parrergon ticks all the right boxes. The veteran German musician is a past master at this kind of thing, of course, but there seems to be something particularly beguiling about this creepy, clandestine collection of hushed soundscapes, nightmarish dreamscapes, and softly spoken strolls through imaginary graveyards. For the most part, the tracks are subtle and under-produced, with Tiechens seemingly able to conjure vivid aural imagery out of quiet chords, atmospheric field recordings, slowly unfurling melodies, and electronic glitches. It feels to us a little like the sonic equivalent of a moonlit stroll through a distant graveyard, though others may interpret it differently.
