Review: As Mike 'Angel X' Clark told us recently over at Juno Daily, environmental activism is what has inspired the lead track from his new Activate EP. Clark, who is known as 'The Detroit ambassador' amongst local heads, serves it up on the excellent Third Ear along with three other tracks that collide his take on techno, electro and disco. Aside from the thump of the title cut, 'Going Off The Wall' brings some edgy synth drama that you might hear in a futuristic spy cop show while 'It's Coming For Ya' is slow, dubby, dark deep house. The closing cut 'Mr Mitchell' shows another look entirely with hints of futurist jazz funk that cannot fail to get you going.

Review: There's seemingly no end to the mind-blowing vaults of UK tech house titan Mark Ambrose. Even after the extensive three-volume run of reissues on Repeats, Rawax have found more of the South Coast legend's late 90s material that hasn't been reissued yet. Sharks be damned, the Cat Groove 12" is back within reach and remastered to bring the best out of the tracks. The title track is one of those artfully squashed, funk loop-riding jams that turns the heat up without any need for studio showboating - just the right ingredients. 'Floating Around' is a heady tripper crying out for the morning, while 'Hook Up' finds another soulful lick to place at the centre of a groove so crunchy it just has to come from an MPC. Hold tight for 'Warehouse Blues', which injects some nasty, pumping techno energy into the mix with a metallic bassline that comes on like Mr Fingers dipped in chrome.

Review: In the sprawling tendrils of minimal mastery Ricardo Villalobos has attached his name to, it's not always easy to pick out the stone cold classics. 2003 album Alcachofa is, however, a stand out moment from his career when he proved to be more than just a club 12" artist. Sure, the record is mainly driven by house rhythms, but this was a demonstration of the creative power within the minimal approach and Villalobos could get creative more than most. Originally released on Playhouse and now repressed on four 12"s by Perlon, it's a fitting tribute to a landmark record, now with added tracks from the accompanying Alcachofa Tools 12".

Review: Lempuyang makes it to release number 15 with a devastatingly deep new EP from Deepchord Records co-founder Mike Schommer. He kicks off with 'Scapegoat' featuring the alluring vocals of Milly James which echo out over super slow-motion dub rhythms and icy pads. The Pole rework brings more crisp hits and distant eerie drones over a more pronounced rhythm but one that remains devilishly sparse. On the flip, 'Deceivers' has more hypotonic drive - a fleshy dub stepper to lock in any 'floor and then 'Believers' slows it down to a crawl once more. An essential dub EP that promises no represses.

Review: Innervisions continue their exploration of house music's myriad sub-genres with this EP from Berlin-based Ede. The title of the record is instructive, as this breakthrough artist from the label's Secret Weapons series seeks to fuse the unmistakable sound of Detroit with an unabashed pop streak. The vocals are front and centre on these tracks, and they sound absolutely huge when strapped to a stadium-sized remix of 'Do My Thing' from the mighty Dixon on the A1. 'Your Love', 'When You Need It' and 'On My Mind' are equally powerful though, charged with those star-scraping synth lines which make Detroit techno such an eternally cherished sound.

Review: After a surprise sojourn last year as Sato, an alias he used to explore ambient and dub techno territory, Satoshi Tomiie has reverted to his given name for solo album number five - a thin return given he made his 12" debut way back in 1989. Review: Casino Classix is one of several aliases for legendary minimal man Baby Ford. Here it is also the name of a four-track EP that finds the long time UK underground operative working alongside fellow British techno luminary Mark Broom on a quartet of devastating cuts. 'Ringer' opens up with some dark and nimble baselines darting about beneath a dense layer of percussion and FX. 'Hoppa' is then a more precise and minimalist cut with wonky bass snaking down low beneath the icy hi-hats and jumbled toms. There is a warm dub depth to 'Hot Pot' to kick off the flip and 'Beach Club' shuts down with a restless mix of synth daubs and deft percussion over an ice cold groove.

Review: Chris Stussy is very much one of the contemporary scene's most prominent producers. He has emerged from the Dutch underground to take the global circuit by storm as a DJ but also a studio slickster who fuses tech, minimal, house and breaks. His own label deals in just that and here it offers up a trio of trippy and future facing dance floor delights from Varhat. 'Nobody' is a turbocharged tech cut with freewheeling cosmic melodies and 'Mopho' takes a more deep and breezy approach while 'Breaking Out' (Paolo Rocco remix) is balmy and deft minimal lushness.

Review: After debuting on Kaizenrecordsberlin back in 2020, Gauvain finally makes a second appearance with this sure-footed EP for Shaque & DJ Tjizza's Berlin-based label Mood Waves. There's a sense of the trancey tech house scene in the playful threads running through these tracks - cheeky synth lines with a little wriggle to them and plenty of ear-catching samples. 'Suspended Animation' is an especially flamboyant cut, but really they're all out to bring a little naughtiness to the dancefloor and inspire some sharply defined figures to be thrown. Even when things get moodier on 'The Pier, 1962', there's an irrepressible sense of fun which leaves a lasting impression.

Review: When it comes tech house, Eats End Dubs's Eastenderz label is right up there with the best of them. This time out the 55th outing comes from Julian Fijima. As always it's a fine distillation of tech, dub and house with a hint of garage thrown in too on opener 'Get Funky', then 'Destructive Rhythm' brings rave synth stabs and dark vocals. 'Optional Illusion' has more molten acid lines run through its midst and last of all is the best of the lot - the percussive swing of 'How It's Going Down.'

Review: Offenbach upstart Tom Ries has been impressing with his playful take on minimal since debuting in 2017, and he's on especially fun and funky form for this first release on Inadequate Audio. Every track is a winner, but 'MM Swimsuit' is a particularly deadly cut thanks to the combination of swinging, sizzling drums, pinging sound design and warm, smudgy chords cast in a jazzy tone that only adds to the grooviness. Every track has its own distinct character, making this a must-check for anyone who likes their shuffling minimal to play out with flair.

Review: The birth point of ecstasy in British music is usually credited to acid house and the second summer of love: a cemented vision of kids sweating and vibrating in clubs, fields and warehouses in 1988, united by universal empathy and mind-popping sounds. However, in 1981, a couple of young men from Leeds went to New York, discovered the drug in its infancy, fused its' gritty synth pop to acid house's squelchy 303 groove and recorded an album - Soft Cell's Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret. Review: Behind The Mask is a brand new label from Lorenzo Aribone who sets out its sonic vision by taking care of the very first release. He uses it as an opportunity to show his range as he traverses the spectrum from techno to house and back again. 'Dfloor' is stiff industrial tech with bleeps and squeaks and metal hits. 'Mask Off' then brings some acid modulations and fizzing synth stabs that very much make for a futuristic tech house sound. He doesn't let up on the flip with 'I Show You' churning up ghoulish vocals and tough drum funk and last of all is 'Secret' which gets all punchy and tripped out and is just the sort of thing Craig Richards might play.

Review: Keinemusik's Rampa & &ME put their spin on the third single from the most recent Moderat album, released not too long ago in 2022, MORE D4TA. 'More Love' was a star track and well represented the longtime Ninja Tune and now Monkeytown duo's contemporary sound; fusing popular indie-stadium motifs with vocoded electronics and elusively glossy vocal repetitions. This remix, however, hears a complete and utter tempo shift and ushers the track into far more treacherous territories, echoing the aesthetic of contemporaries such as DJ Koze in its stereo-panned percussive clanks, muted-distorted vocal processing and peculiar "womps".

For Lack of a Better Name was the Canadian's fourth album back in 2009 and it features the critically acclaimed 'Strobe' as well as 'Ghosts 'n' Stuff' with Rob Swire of Pendulum. Review: Cousin and Priori have joined forces for this new collaborative outing on the Canadian label Naff and it finds them serving up some delightfully artful and melodic minimal. '1' rides on a grubby, scruffy beat at high speed with some nice cosmic smears adding the vibes, and the Warm dub then makes things all watery and liquid. '2' has a bokken beat that makes you pop your body while twisted bell sounds are wrapped around the mix. An icy dub then closes out with a zoned out 5am feel and more deftness of touch.

It is the 15th EP from Hashplant which he takes care of here with his usual deft touch and silky fusion of rhythm and sound. 'Decisions' kicks things off with nice broken beat patterns and funky bass topped off with some lush cosmic synth work. 'Ripple' is a more zoned out and dreamy cut but one packed with meticulous synth craft and 'Subsonic Groove' is another super smooth one for blissed out cruising. It is a full throttle house outing that opens with yelping diva vocals and retro baselines on 'Can't Pay My Bills'. Review: After four appearances on Lithuania's Greyscale, Ajnkana delivers his first long player Integers Equations, with more than an hour of "tangibly eerie, atmospheric chords", ambience but not ambient-edged beats and dubby effects either destined for play on deeper dancefloors or comedown soundtracking post-party living room sessions. The titles may be blank as anything, all binary and consisting of 1s and 0s in slightly different orders, but the instrumental, slowly-enveloping tracks have plenty of personality. Fans of Sahko, Chain Reaction and Ilian Tape's more esoteric offerings will love it.

Review: Kiria Records is back here with the fifth release by Zenk, which is a melodic but sci-fi tech house EP that starts with the jittery beats of 'Oniromantic'. Rigid synth sequences and slivery metal hits give it a future feel while 'Khubaba' gets more tight and kinetic and abstract. The more tough and pumping 'Nefertiti' is another carefully interwoven mix of sinewy synths, hiccuping effects and warped bass that is topped with a sensuous female vocal and 'Nefertiti' (Costin RP remix) then gets zoned out and trippy with a more balmy sense of synth soul.

Review: Sweely is one of the strongest producers in the European house scene for almost a decade now. This house wizard from Lyon, France has made the rounds on some of the most acclaimed labels during that time. In late 2022 he released his first album Closer Energy. The album is still consistently wowing people and even peers of Sweely. So much so that this EP is now here with key tracks from that release being mixed by artist friends who also are loving the album. Review: Humanoid Recordings co-founder 4d lays down another four-track 12" for the label, scouring the weightier and scrapier ends of minimal and acid house, all while teasing out a retro-robotic edge. Only an artist with a real sense of humour can invoke ideas of 'Stupidity' and 'Quantum Theory' in the same breath; both tracks betray the unified whimsy and intelligence that a successful acid house and techno artist must portray in order to win hearts. The latter uses a particularly sticky, hard-to-pin-down 4x4 kick style; contrast to B1 'World In Our Head', which portrays a psychic model of the outside world through trilling trance lines, and the meek glissandos of 'Sowie Lockers', securing an indeterminate but funky mood.

Review: Get your stomping boots on for this new pink 12" from the Revival crew out of New York. Bodeler and Manu Desrets link up for some heavy, straight-up tech that lands hard but with funk. 'Impact' makes just that with its crisp snare hats and thudding kicks all underpinned by a loopy bassline. Some trips out synths break out like fireworks at the midpoint before the tough, stiff, brilliant beats return. Review: Mega eerie techno from Germany's own Michael Melchner, proving techno can indeed be done differently, not least when its groceries are in season. Active since 2008, springboarding his career with the label and masters of German uniformity and drab, Cargo Edition, Melchner has since flown the nest into further-afield aerations with Paragram, Bloop Recordings and now, Different Times. 'New World Supermarket' truly sounds to be a grim sort, with the title track, together with the ensuing 'The Voyeur', 'Anatomicouture', and 'Kolonne Null', painting a rather anxious, suspenseful and brutalist picture of future grocery shopping. The closing track is something of a cathartic let-up compared to the first three, its pace relatively downtempo and its choice of samples roomy and sci-fi, though the creep factor still ever-so-slightly remains.

Review: Noah Skelton returns to Daydream with a fresh new excursion into the itchy shuffles of the deep tech variety, tempered with a one-off contribution in the vein of dreamy breaks. Examples of the first style include the tracks 'Hammajang', 'Blind', and 'First Remark', all of which bring an extra slice of texture to an already minimal headroom, which is still maintained despite the textural decorations. 'Aurora' is the wildcard, opting for sizzling breaks constructions, breathy vocal segues and a resonant pad line.

Review: Groovin Italy landed a monumental reissue for the label with C'hantal's 'The Realm'. Originally released way back in 1990 on the dance and early Brooklyn based Powertraxx records. Staying true to the original release, it offers the 'Love In D Minor' mix but does one better in tucking in the Acapella version to the A-side so the B-side 2 versions have a little more room to breathe. The added bonus has to be putting on the more rare "Wild Club mix' to the party along with the original 'Rave Mix'. All and all, a very packed reissue of some of the best versions of the track, all on one record. This might just hold the number one spot for best techno reissue so far of 2024.

Review: We are not sure who Bobby Dreams and it looks like from the catalog number that this is the first release by All Nice records. So, we do not have much information or background on this release but we like what we hear! 'Creepin' has on a smooth deep house tip and reminds us of prime Larry Heard tracks. 'Let Them Know' has a sweet balance of Detroit and Chicago imbedded in its soul. 'After Hours' is fitting name for this late-night groove while 'Get Busy' adds an eerie mood to the sexy rhythm. Fans of 80s and 90s Chicago and Detroit deep house should definitely check this out.

After beating down the doors of Ghostly International for many years, the fans finally get their wish in the shape a new, shiny reissue. Coming on smokey black vinyl this time, nobody has a reason to not have this record in their collection. Included are legendary tracks like 'Stems', 'Clouded' and 'Leafs'. Many think that not only is this the best Recondite album but one of the best techno albums of the year 2013.

Review: Dan Formless' "Fried All Day" is a minimalistic tech house track that becomes the second release for the upstart label Bank of Switches. The original track is characterized by its repetitive beat, sparse instrumentation, and hypnotic atmosphere. The title 'Fried All Day' evokes a sense of exhaustion and overindulgence, which is reflected in the track's strangely hypnotic rhythm and quirky sounds. Here she steps up to the fledgling Mood Waves label for The View, and EP that finds her stretching herself into all new territory once more. 'Welcome Luz' is crunchy, stomping cosmic tech with sci-fi motifs. 'EX-PECT' has whimsical pads paired with more silvery and metallic drum sounds and after the more mechanical grace of the a-side, 'What's Her Name?' gets loose with rubbery bass and bendy synth leads while '2020' shuts down with some downtempo post club trippiness.

Review: Sansibar aka Sunny Seppa is fast becoming a large name in underground techno and house. Now, he has opened up his new label called Sin Sistema with the first release titled 'We Rise'. The title track is a pure crusher! This fast-paced corker features a wicked acid line and a beautiful lingering melody that creates an almost acid trance stormer. Things change up quickly with the slow acid wiggle of 'Elastic' that has us comparing it to legendary slow acid tracks like from Jammin Unit. For the second side, 'Sonic Minds' might just be the floor filler of the lot while '2K' is the dancefloor workout monster for the house heads. If 'We Rise' is any indication, Sin Sistema will be a label to buy on the spot.

Review: Having already caused a stir with their various solo releases, old friends Klein Zage (real name Sage Redman) and Joey G (Joe Gillick) have decided to join forces on an EP inspired by their time living together in South London. While the EP is musically varied, there's a sonic coherence to the three original tracks thanks to the presence of Redman's spoken word vocals throughout. We're particularly enjoying the deep, emotive beauty of 'A Little Dissonance', though punchy, shuffling and spacey opener 'Folks Not Guys' pushes it close. Over on the flip we're treated to a trio of remixes: Ariel Zetina's intense, trippy and high-tempo take on 'Folks Not Guys', Local Artist's warming and rolling, Rhodes-sporting 'Disco Dub' of the same track, and DJ Python's pleasingly weird, mind-mangling version of 'A Little Dissonance'.
