Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, Palto Flats has decided to reissue it, allowing those without overblown record buying budgets to wallow in its gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: The breadth of Piero Umiliani reissues over the last few years has been nothing short of spectacular. Once the current scene was exposed to the late artist's wide-reaching catalogue, different labels have flooded in to resurface his best work - which all sounds far ahead of its time. This, Il Mondo Dei Romani, is perhaps the most interesting of his reissues yet, but not only for its music. This is a soundtrack to a '70s documentary that Umiliani made about Ancient Rome, so not only do you get incredible avant-garde music, but also an interesting setting or story to attach to it. Umiliani's ingenious balance between futurism and classicism is just perfect, and while there is always something very stable at the core of his tracks, the artist had a way of introducing new and strange sounds that just makes sense. Although we recommend you o listen to all of his work, this one might well be our favourite yet.

Review: We Release Whatever The Fuck We Want Records is a label founded and curated by Oliver Mental Groove of Mental Groove Records and Stephane Armleder aka The Genevan Heathen of Villa Magica Records. This is the label's seventeenth release in only a mere three years of operation and they've brought us a bunch of much needed re-issues of work by the likes of Bernard Parmegiani, John Carpenter and Michel le Grand. Here we have the original soundtrack of Amer, a 2009 Belgian-French horror film written and directed by French directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani. There are contributions from some of the greatest Italian composers such as Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai and the possibly the best of them all: Ennio Morricone. As a bonus there are eight "thrilling, frightening and suspenseful infinite loops" taken from the movie's original sound effects library.
