  7. Track 7 (7:10)
  8. Track 8 (5:06)
Review: Black Patterns is a new alias from Lobster Theremin regular Snow Bone, launched to allow him to explore more obviously experimental techno pastures. In truth, Black Patterns Volume 1 is thoroughly in keeping with the fuzzy, distorted and generally bleak material that the hyped label has been putting out of late. Variously creepy, unsettling and freakishly intense, it's a collection that rarely steps back from the dusty darkness of the crumbling warehouses and basement spaces most readily associated with this style of balls-out techno. As a collection of club tracks, it can't be faulted. Given that it's DJs that will be most interested in its' throbbing charms, it would seem churlish to criticise.

  1. Longhorn (5:53)
  2. Tool (4:55)
  3. Oil Rig (6:46)
Review: The seventh installment in Lobster Theremin's Black Label series comes from frequent contributor Daze, who delivers another trio of tracks seemingly inspired by the dark potential of industrial-influenced lo-fi techno. "Longhorn" sets the tone, with distorted, almost chilling melodic hooks riding a clattering wave of drum machine beats and discordant, metallic hits. He celebrates the almost limitless potential of percussion on the gnarly, thrill-a-minute drum track "Tool", before expertly combining alien electronics, freakish acid lines and relentless rhythms on the delightfully out-there "Oil Rig". All three tracks are gritty, dark and unrelenting, and should appeal to those who pay close attention to the output of labels such as L.I.E.S and Berceuse Heroique.

  3. What He Said (6:08)
  4. Siasi (3:42)
Review: Lobster Theremin are back with more of their dusty and rusty retro leaning beats, this time courtesy of Grammar Of Movement aka Puyain Sanati. Starting out in fine form with the booming and lo-fi minimal electro of "Faint", he then takes it down a few notches on the ultra-grainy "Pitchfight", an ambient deep house jam with a degraded monologue of yesteryear (taken from VHS sources?), over a rusty and filtered loop and hypnotic pads. On the flip there's some tough and booming lo-tech soul on "What He Said" and another haunting and ethereal ambient beat on "Siasi" with yet another epic monologue, but this one's really powerful and emotive. For fans of early Huerco S material or more recently NYC's Patricia, this is some great stuff.

Review: RAW MT comes through under his Richard Harrow monicker and lands on the ever-growing Lobster Theremin label out of London, and this is something of a banger! In the imprint's usual raw and jacking flavour, Harrow delivers a tailor-made floor missile in the form of "Acid Hammer" and as the name suggests, this clusterbomb is set to cave your speakers in with almighty 303 fury and is likely to be supported by the biggest names in the underground circuits right now. If you're into your LIES, your Chicago house etc then this is a total winner!

Review: Leeds based producer Hedge Maze follows up last year's brilliant Dysania EP with his new release for the always intriguing Lobster Theremin. Keeping in line with the labels reputation for all things lo-fi and dusty of late, it starts out with the jagged dub techno textures of the title track and the cyclical, sonar bleep techno of "Ourca" getting this EP off to a very good start. On the flip we've got the blissed out, tape saturated ambient house of "Interlude" and then the grinding hardware house of "Hyowl" which wouldn't sound out of place on LIES or The Trilogy Tapes. Tip!

Review: Somewhat surprisingly, it's been two years since Imre Kiss's most recent outing on Lobster Theremin, the fine Raw Energy EP. This belated follow-up - his first 12" single since - is every bit as essential. Perhaps the most striking track is "Never", a fizzing but spaced-out techno excursion that makes great use of tumbling sub-bass and dreamy, ambient style chords. That said, the slower and even more bass-heavy curiosity that is "Stateless" - mutant broken techno fused with ultra-deep house - is almost as good, while bold, bumpin' B-side "Track 3" is the EP's most straightforward dancefloor moment.

Review: Oh Lord! These days there are even reissues of albums from a few years back on different labels! That just shows the state we're in right now: everybody's just vinyl hungry. Imre Kiss' 2013 cassette excursion on Farbwechsel, the aptly named Midnight Wave, is given the vinyl treatment by London powerhouse Lobster Theremin, and the artwork has been given a good makeover, too. Many of you are probably familiar with the release already, but this is the perfect joint if you're looking for house music that spans onto the bizarre and the abstract; you'll find nine tracks of meditative dancefloor delight and, as Ron Morelli would label it, it's certainly club music for shut ins. For fans of everything from Opal Tapes to Berceuse Heroique.

  3. The Night Flyer (5:58)
Review: Steve Murphy is no newcomer to Lobster Theremin, having previously released a number of bombastic house and techno cuts on the imprint over the last couple of years. The Night Flyer is his newest alias, and was apparently created to allow him to make more industrial, EBM and acid-tinged techno. This eponymously titled first outing begins with "All Wrong", a nagging and mind-altering combination of psychedelic acid lines, looped vocal samples and thumping percussion. "The Girls Shoot To Kill" is an altogether bouncier affair, built around rubbery synthesizer arpeggios and clattering EBM percussion hits, while "The Night Flyer" fuses early '90s bleep melodies and LFO style chords with metronomic drums.

  3. Richard's Revenge (6:56)
Review: Italy's Raw MT popped up on our radars ever since his debut on Wicked Bass in 2013, not only because of Greg Beato's remix of his original, but also because we were like: "Whose this dude from Italy!? We dig!". Since then, he's been back on Wicked Bass, but it's time for his appearance on London's Lobster Theremin, giving us some much needed dust-house, as only they can provide. "One Last Shot" is deep, ethereal and rigged in texture, but "Sky (rough mix)" quickly ups the tempo and drops in some much needed acid squeal to please the heads. Side B, "Richard's Revenge" is brooding, spectral and hypnotic, taking Raw MT into a direction we weren't expecting, and one that we very much like.

  7. Ovacrwded (Slow) (6:28)
Review: This LP and 10" package marks Stephan Olbricht's return to Lobster Theremin, a label he last graced back in 2014. While much of the imprint's recent output has echoed the distorted, industrial-tinged dirtiness explored by L.I.E.S, For Perfect Beings is a quietly melodious and hypnotic affair, albeit with occasional forays into more clandestine territory (see the muffled creepiness of "Blambestrid", and the otherworldly ambience of "Gesnaria"). For the most part, the Romanian's dancefloor instincts appear to have been subdued in favour of more atmospheric and thoughtful fare, though "Ovacrwded (Fast)" - housed on the accompanying 10" - does a good job combining elements of deep techno, dub techno, and crusty, distortion-heavy experimentalism.

Review: Young Brighton producer Slacker (no not the legendary progressive house act of the same name) aka Sam Black is up next on Lobster Theremin following up great releases by Asok, nthng and Unfinished Portraits. He's channelling the jungle vibes of yesteryear (think Peshay) on the classic euphoria of "Amen To The Lonely" while acid house/Summer of Love aesthetics are channeled convincingly on "See Yourself" and capturing that classic Lobster Theremin tape saturated vibe. On the flip, it's all about the deep 303 therapy of "White Monk" where he works that little silver Roland box to the max, powered away by dusty 808 drum patterns beneath.

  4. Love Is A Stranger (7:02)
Review: In a sense, Snow Bone has been one of Lobster Theremin's mainstays since the label's relative growth to fame, and the artist's mechanical brand of techno is both effective on the dance floor and fresh on the ears. This time, he comes through like a roll of thunder with the bleepy, hard-faced techno of "Neon X", followed by the more chord-heavy analogue fuzziness of "Allstars". On the flip, "Tradecraft" offers some jaw-splitting four-to-the-floor in the same vein as artists like DJ Rush back in the DJAX days, and "Love Is A Stranger" falls in the dark depths of a techno depression that reminds us of the Avian output, except that here things are murkier, more distorted and a little more tenebrous.
