  3. O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

Review: For their latest foray into the world of the ghostly, intense and unusual, L.I.E.S has turned to fellow New Yorker Adam Mitchell, a man whose career as a techno producer stretches back to the 1990s. Here, though, he's appearing under his lesser-known Admx-71 alias, a pseudonym used for his more experimental endeavours. Sitting somewhere between unsettling ambience, horror-influenced IDM, analogue electro, industrial and out-there experimentation, the album's 11 tracks bristle with bright ideas. While there are undeniably dark and hard-to-handle moments, Mitchell's default setting is more quietly melodious, resulting in a set that impresses with its' alien melodies, spacey electronics and fuzzy, distortion-soaked rhythms.

  1. Big Deal (6:33)

Review: New York's Black Dice had to land on their native LIES imprint at some point. It was only a matter of time before label head Ron Morelli picked them up, and he's done so in fine style. The American Tapes, DFA, and Paw Tracks casuals are made up of Eric Copeland, Aaron Warren and Bjorn Copeland, and the trio like to get a little wacky over their coldwave grooves. "Big Deal" is a true post-punk reincarnation, a track that manages to pick out everything that was right about the early 80's by adding in elements of noise, rock, and a little techno. A monumental tune. "Last Laugh" is more dubwise in its approach, where a distorted guitar sways from side to side amid a fuzzy whirlpool of aqueous sonics and dusty percussion. A great release from LIES, and a fresh addition to their more usual house and techno onslaught.

Review: British techno veteran Oliver Ho has released some fine material as Broken English Club since debuting the alias back in 2014. The English Beach, Ho's second BEC full-length and first for L.I.E.S, is the audio equivalent of a trip to a run-down North Sea coastal resort on a wet Wednesday in November. Full of end-of-days electronics, stripped-back industrial techno, moody minimal wave shufflers and bubbly EBM workouts, it's as authentic a tribute to early '80s electronic experimentalism as you're likely to hear all year. Highlights include the Nitzer Ebb style bounce of "Pylon", the foreboding, desolate electronica of "Rust Ballad", the angry electro moodiness of "Carrion" and the rolling, organ-laden autumnal bliss of "The English Beach".

Review: Rush Hour weirdo house production unit Faster Action loses Robert Bergman on this LIES BLK release with Interstellar Funk taking full control. Up top, "Soki Loka" is a loose and grainy techno bullet that seems to be breaking down with each new segment of the 4/4 before falling back into shape and bruising the listener further and further. Complementing this, "Disaster Crash" shows a more heads-down side to Faster Action, dominating by a pulsating kick drum permeating through a thick wall of molecular sonics and industrial atmospherics. Large and in charge, as per usual. LIES in the place - act faaast!

Review: Unicursal Hexagram, the debut album from Brooklyn-based experimentalist Jahiliyya Fields remains a highlight of the L.I.E.S. discography some three years after its release. The left-of-centre synthesizer soundscapes, droning textures and experimental explorations were astounding at the time, and it's an album you can revisit now and still uncover new depths. On Chance Life, his second album for L.I.E.S., Jahiliyya Fields changes tack a little with the 11 tracks a tad closer to the dancefloor. While there are still out-there moments (including a bizarre spoken word cut), for the most part the album pairs his throbbing synthesizers and crusty electronics with dense techno grooves, psychedelic tribal rhythms and humid box jams.

Review: The L.I.E.S. release schedule looks particularly strong this spring, with slated albums from Inhalants and Gunnar Haslam amongst the highlights. There's also the small matter of this sublime set from returning heroes KWC 92, aka Born Free's Samo DJ and Top Nice man Max Stenerudh, whose debut full-length on Ron Morelli's back in 2013 remains a highlight of the L.I.E.S. discography. This eponymous set is as atmospheric and enlightening as they come, contrasting moments of cut glass ambience, dreamy electronica and Vangelis-like soundtrack fare, with occasionally grittier cuts to puncture the head-in-the-clouds mood. It's a brilliant blend that repeatedly delivers tracks of great quality, with highlights including the heart-aching, Eastern-goes-alien wonder of "NR6", and the widescreen, deep space bliss of "NR8".

Review: Having impressed with last year's Let That Shit Breathe E.P, Billy Werner once again dons the M/R guise for another forthright and intoxicating outing on L.I.E.S. There's been plenty of chatter about this E.P's lead cut, "Dread Nox", and it's not hard to see why. Built around dusty, pitched-down jungle breaks, disconnected vocal samples, metallic electronics and curious ambient textures, it's a little reminiscent of some of Future Sound of London's more claustrophobic efforts. "Portals" sees Werner successfully fuse bouncy, broken techno rhythms - built around restless drum machine handclaps and rubbery kick drums - with a whisper of acid and some seriously creepy textures, while "Tea & Origins" sounds like a stripped-back Autechre roller.

Review: It's been a while since Shawn O'Sullivan last donned the Vapauteen guise. EP1 is, strangely, his third 12" outing under the name for L.I.E.S, following well-received releases in 2012 and 2013. Opener "Commands" is a deliciously energetic affair, with metallic percussion hits, raging acid lines and fizzing cymbals wrapping themselves around a formidable, broken techno groove. "Made In Magnasenti" has a more angular feel, rhythmically at least, and boasts the kind of undulating synthesizer bassline that would once have taken pride of place on a mid '80s EBM jam. Finally, O'Sullivan lets his EBM and industrial influences run wild on the forthright, ultra-masculine stomper "Blood On The Moon".

Review: Shawn O'Sullivan has been a part of the extended L.I.E.S family for some time, and has already delivered two fine EPs for Ron Morelli's label under the Vapauteen guise. Even so, this is his first outing under the alias for three years. Opener "Fully Automated" is as robust and hard-wired as you'd expect, with panicked stabs and aggressive acid lines riding bowel-bothering kick-drums and muscular cymbal patterns. "16 Psyche (Life In Debtor's Prison)" is similarly intense, if a little more metallic and industrial in tone, while "One Face" sounds like industrial-strength acid techno that's been recorded in an oversized cement mixer. If Surgeon made records for L.I.E.S, they'd probably sound like this.
