Review: Melodic, love torn, inspiring, euphoric and heartfelt are all words to help explain the emotional drive of the music Matthew Dear makes as Audion. They are all certainly applicable to new Kompakt jam "Dem Howl" too, and this is thanks in part to the vocals of Troels Abrahamsen, lead singer of Danish indie rock group VETO, who turns a moody bassline dub into a meaningful house production not too dissimilar to classic Junior Boys material. And who else better to remix a track like this than Kompakt legend Michael Mayer who keeps Abrahamsen's voice up front, adding a slight choral and extra chiming percussion. Kompakt striking all the right notes here.

Review: Kompakt's strong year of album projects continues apace with a debut long player from Vivie-Ann Bakos and Anstascia D'Elene's Blond:ish project. The Montreal pair have slowly ingrained themselves within the Cologne label, issuing a series of club ready 12"s on Kompakt since they debuted back in 2012. However, Blond:ish change tack for Welcome To The Present, an album that is apparently inspured by Bakos and D'Elene spending time channelling their inner spirituality whilst in Mexico and India. As a result, a warm calm exudes much of Welcome To The Present, though there are still moments suited for the dancefloor, such as the breathless tech of "Endless Game" and the tres-Kompakt "Nada Brahma". Review: Stepping up to Kompakt, DJ Tennis makes smart use of the melodic hook from Cinematic Orchestra's "Evolution" to create an emotionally charged house track, only strengthened by the yearning new age turn from Pillowtalk on vocals. Life & Death take a more pronounced stance on their version of "The Outcast", most notably in the full-fat bassline that emerges underneath the plaintive proceedings. As you would expect, Morgan Geist brings another level of class to his version, working some wonderfully delirious arpeggios and ravey chord flexing into the mix, and creating a much snappier beat out of the component parts of the original.

Review: For his third full-length for the constantly enduring Kompakt label, Axel Willner has decided to take his enduring brand of Balearic loop techno to grandiose new heights. Sonically, the template remains the same - intoxicating layers of guitar, voice and ambient synth loops atop hypnotic dancefloor grooves - but the resultant tracks are just, well, bigger - cinematic, even. Given Willner's inherent skill at producing this kind of baggy, organic techno, the results are rarely less than impressive. As a result, Looping State of Mind makes for thoroughly enjoyable listening, simultaneously appearing ambitiously big and pleasantly intimate. He deserves enormous credit for pulling it off.

Review: In the words of Axel Willner himself regarding his fifth studio album "The Follower is about old myths, finding utopia and how mankind repeatedly makes the same mistakes over and over". The title track is fairly stomping acid techno that hypnotises you with its loopy and sinister repetition until the snare drum and organ sets in around the five minute mark; transforming the track dramatically. There's also some stylish electro-pop noir in the form of "Pink Sun" while "Monte Verita" or "Soft Streams" have that classic Kompakt sound ie: ethereal and dreamy house journeys. We particularly enjoyed the droney shoegaze electronics of "Raise The Dead" and the 14 minute long closing epic "Reflecting Lights", an ambient house journey that even The Orb would be impressed by.

Review: It would be fair to say that Box is something of an epic. A lusciously packaged celebration of Wolfgang Voigt's acclaimed late 90s work under the Gas alias, it contains all four of the producer's iconic albums stretched across ten slabs of wax, and a quartet of CDs. The package also includes a couple of other obscurities - "Tal '90", originally included on an old compilation, and 1999 single 'Oktember' - to make it a near-complete collection of the artist's impeccable output. If you have any interest at all in ambient techno, dub techno or the development of the Cologne sound, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: On the back of Kompakt's expansive retrospective of his work under the Gas alias, the essential Box, Wolfgang Voigt has decided to deliver a new album - his first for 17 years. Predictably, Narkopop is as cinematic, widescreen and densely layered as anything the German ambient producer has done to date. Over 11 spellbinding tracks, Voigt blends field recordings and droning electronics with sweeping, almost orchestral movements, swirling melodic cycles, and occasional forays into rhythmic hypnotism. The result is a collection of "wall of sound" ambient compositions that does a terrific job tiptoeing the fine lines between both grandiosity and intimacy, and joy and pain. In a word: essential.

Review: Since the release of his debut 12" back in 2013, Anton Kubikov has established himself as one of the fastest-rising names in the dub techno scene. For this keenly anticipated debut album, he's flipped the script a little, delivering a set of breathtaking ambient tracks. Given the atmospheric nature of his previous productions and his obvious attention to detail, it's a move that not only makes sense, but also results in a string of brilliant highlights. Alongside dark and moody, horror-influenced soundscapes and claustrophobic, dub techno-informed pieces, you'll also find Jonny Nash-esque ambient guitar works, blissful piano compositions, gentle new age electronica and the sparkling, wall-of-sound orchestral drone of impeccable closer "Entrance".

Review: Two Cologne techno giants, Michael Mayer and Reinhard Voigt, have been collaborating for a long time now, with the former being the co-founder of Kompakt while the latter has been appearing on the label since the late '90s. They're back with a split EP for Kompakt itself and they've brought they're glitchy, electro-acoustic brand of house music along with them. Mayer delivers "The Stickler" and it's a progressive clusterbomb filled with heavy atmospherics and bric-a-brac percussion, whereas Voigt's "The Buddy" is fuzzier, looser and more hypnotic. All in all, a fine pair of stone-cold killers!

With partner in crime Thomas Fehlmann, the duo resisted looking back and studying their earlier (seminal) recordings and opted for a more spontaneous approach: a focus on where they are at today in 2016. COW is said to have been completed over the course of five sessions in only six months, between a relentless touring schedule which they also credit as being hugely influential on the album's sound. As always, strap yourself in for an immersive sound experience and possibly expect to hear some of the more courageous DJs dropping likes likes of "4am Exhale (Chill Out, World!)" or perhaps "Just Because I Really Really Luv Ya". Review: Given his recent foray into the world of epic, undulating ambience - see the fine Principe Del Norte full-length on Smalltown Supersound - we can't think of anyone better than Prins Thomas to remix Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann's "Alpine" single. The eccentric Norwegian goes in hard on the A-side, delivering a near 12-minute "Diskomiks" that effortlessly joins the dots between The Orb's meandering ambience and his own particular brand of loose, percussive Scandolearic disco. Flip to the B-side for the "Simpler Tool For DJ Fools" - seven minutes of rolling grooves, classic ambient house bass and fluid electronics - and the blissful, mountaintop ambience of the "Short Yoga Break version".

Review: The longevity of Alex Patterson's Orb project never ceases to amaze. While the ambient outfit has gone through many changes since making its debut in 1989 - longtime production partner Thomas Fehlmann being the man at the controls these days - Patterson shows little sign of wanting to call it a day. Here the duo delivers their 21st album, returning to the stargazing obsessions that have served them so well over the years. Consisting of four typically epic workouts, Moonbuilding 2703 AD doffs a cap to many of their obsessions of recent years - hypnotic Berlin techno, classic ambience, woozy tech-house and dub, primarily - with the jazz-funk-meets-ambient dub flex of the title track standing out.

Review: Producer Thore Pfeiffer first joined the ever-growing Kompakt family last year, contributing two wonderfully melodic, heady tracks to their Pop Ambient 2015 compilation. Here he delivers his debut album, the oddly titled I'm Blickfeld, in the process setting out his stall as an ambient producer to watch in coming years. His trademark sound is undeniably positive, offering a mix of cut-up acoustic guitar licks, hypnotic electronics, dreamy textures and occasional woozy, freestyle vocals. With Pfeiffer's fluid, classical guitar passages - run through all manner of effects units - takes centre stage for the most part

Review: Terranova's comeback album Restless gets the remix treatment and the title track featuring UK legends Stereo MCs gets the script flipped on it; firstly by Miami's Danny Daze. He hands in a truly druggy version for afterhours dancefloors. Re You gives it the injection of the proper Kompakt sound; all dreamy and atmospheric and rather epic. On the B side we have "Underverse" which gets a re-rub by Berlin's Adam Port, sounding like its on the Get Physical! vibe. Finally there's the accapella of said track featuring Mandel Turner all on his own and giving you his lowdown on the nightlife.

Review: As its predecessors had done, this latest installment in Kompakt's annual compilation series gives a good snapshot of where the label's at in the summer of 2011. There's the usual mixture of melodic ambient pop, techno club hits, shuffling deep house and expansive electronica, with familiar favourites (Michael Mayer's brilliant remix of WhoMadeWho, Gus Gus's "Over", Matias' Aguayo's lo-fi dance-rock groover "I Don't Smoke") being joined by a smattering of unreleased cuts. Highlights come thick and fast, with Superpitcher's previously unheard "White Lightning", Jurgen Paape's dream-like "Pray" and Mohn's slo-mo wonk-fest "Tiefnatal" most impressing. If you're after a high quality collection of emotion-rich, cutting-edge electronic music, look no further.

Review: It's that time again people: Kompakt rounds up the usual (and not so usual) suspects on its label roster for the year's most definitive collection of dreamy and emotive electronic music for Total 16. There's a lot to get through on here, but as usual; it's all quite brilliant! Starting out with the return of Spanish minimal hero Alex Under on the gloriously uplifting journey track, "Llaman A La Puerta", The Modernist is back also with the sublime deep house of "The Price Of Love" featuring Hot Chip's Joe Goddard on vocals. And of course, the regulars: Jurgen Paap with "Eden"; a true highlight which really nails the label's trademark sound, Matias Aguayo with the bleepy and bumpy retro leanings of "Komm" and label bosses Voigt & Voigt with the rather dark and gloomy epic "Denken Sie Laut".

Review: Given that Kompakt's first Pop Ambient compilation dropped way back in 2001, it must now be one of the longest running series of its kind around. Certainly, there can be few interested in dreamy, emotion-rich beatless music that hasn't succumbed to its charms at some point over the last 13 years. This year's edition is, predictably, another fine installment. There's much to admire, from the intoxicating drone textures of Wolfgang Voigt's "Ruckverzauberung" (try saying that after a few glasses of German lager) and the shimmering brightness of Ulf Lohmann's "PCC", to the lone, drifting voice and pastoral soundscapes of Simon Scott's brilliant "Fur Betty".

Review: Well it's that time of the year again. Wolfgang Voight compiles the best in ambient for his beloved label and it's more of the same high calibre ambient excursions you'd expect, like in previous editions. Starting off in truly breathtaking fashion with Stephan Matieu's "April Im Oktober", we're then treated to some new material by British icons The Orb, who present us with "Alpine Dawn" further testament to their otherworldly sense for sound. Label mainstay Mikkel Metal appears also with the sombre yet mesmerising cathedral drone of "Titan", as does Leandro Fresco, twice in fact. With both his sublime remix of Dave DK's "Veira" and his own "Configuracion de Atequa" featuring gorgeously uplifting tones reminiscent of old Gas material. Speaking of which, Voight himself appears with his mindblowing "Ruckverzauberung" from 2012 getting a brilliant modern revision by Thore Pfeiffer. Yet again, it goes without saying; this is essential listening.

Review: Since launching in 2001, Kompakt's Pop Ambient series has become one of the more esteemed compilation brands in downtempo music. Such is its' longevity, in fact, that listening to each successive, annual instalment has become something of fixture in the calendars of the ambient-inclined. Its little surprise, then, to find that this 15th instalment is the aural equivalent of a familiar friend; a warming, picturesque and gently stimulating selection of ear-pleasing mood-pieces that doesn't try too hard to do anything too different. Highlights come thick and fast, from the delay-laden acoustics and starry electronics of Thore Pfieffer's "Nero", to the early Orb inspired beauty of Leandro Fresco's "Nada Es Parra Siempre".

Review: We've been waiting anxiously for this one and it's finally landed - not only on our shelves but also on our office turntable, where it's spinning around endlessly and hypnotising us into a state of total folly. Kompakt has always had a knack for signing the right record at the right time and this debut LP from Vermont aka Marcus Worgull and Motor City Drum Ensemble's Danilo Plessow is an absolute winner! The album is basically any synth lover's paradise, where sparse but rhythmic melodies glide in and out of foreboding tunnels and more docile landscapes. We're especially pleased with Plessow's impressive step into more experimental, Krautrocky territories and really putting his synth collection to work here.

Review: Three years on from the release of their eponymous debut album, Danilo Plessow (AKA Motor City Drum Ensemble) and Marcus Worgull once again join forces as Vermont. Like that acclaimed opus, II sees the duo exploring the worlds of ambient and electronica, along the way incorporating elements of 1970s kosmiche, and the kind of cyclical, minimalist compositions made famous by Steve Reich and Terry Riley. The results are uniformly excellent, with highlights including the Manuel Gottsching inspired "Nordeney", the Tangerine Dream style movements of "Gebirge", the Namlookian spaciousness of "Hallo Von Der Anderen Seite", and the hushed analogue creepiness of "Chemtrails".

Review: Given the abundance of krautrock influences and cosmic synthesizer sounds on the Vermont debut album (simply titled Vermont), Prins Thomas was the natural choice to provide remixes. Here, he puts his typically cosmic, space-leaning stamp on three tracks from Dani Plessow and Marcus Worgull's much-hyped set. First, the Full Pupp boss delivers a chugging, hypnotic version of "Dynamik" full of rising and falling electronics and fizzing techno percussion. A slower, more Scandolearic take on "Elektron" follows, before Thomas memorably turns "Macchina" into a head-nodding chunk of woozy ambient dub. It's this, more than the EP's other dancefloor-focused moments, which really impresses.

Review: Vermont's self-titled LP from 2014 was one of Kompakt's most successful releases over the last couple of years, and the German imprint has decided to continue its remix re-rub after Prins Thomas' wet and wild excursion. This time, we have another three winners dishing out the reinterpretations: both Mano Le Tough and Marcus Worgull have a go at "Ubersprung", the former going for an ultra-slick, deep space vibe while the latter lives up to the Kompakt sound with his minimalistic yet beautifully melodic version. Last but not least, DJ Tennis remixes "Majestat" into an airy, outsider house joint for the more introspective sets. Quality, as per usual.

Review: Motor City Drum Ensemble and Marcus Worgull's Vermont project returns to Kompakt with another elegant beatless adventure. Once again reminding us how ambient music can still carry a real tune and narrative, highlights include the clipped cascade of chimes of "Dschuna", the sudden flurries of light on "Demut", momentous overlapping guitar arpeggio of "Ufer" and warped layers and washes on "Hallo Von Der Anderen Seite". Rich in warmth and loaded with hidden twists on every listen, it's the ultimate foil to their better-known clubbier motifs. Beautiful.

Review: As one of Kompakt's longest serving artists, it's perhaps unsurprising that Reinhard Voigt was last year given the honour of delivering the debut release on the Cologne institution's KX imprint. This time round, he's back on the parent label, once again proving his skill at delivering tactile, mind-altering techno at a house tempo. "Reisen & Speison" is particularly brain bending, with a sharp, druggy top end line rolling on relentlessly atop punchy beats and a foreboding, stretched out bassline. Voigt takes a similar approach on the deeper, slightly darker "Wuhler", with an intense, throbbing synthesizer arpeggio providing contrast to his chiming, late night melodies.

Review: Harm Coolen and Merijn Scholte Albers, otherwise known as Weval, return to Germany's Kompakt with another EP of loungey, spaced-out house music. "I'll Be Just Fine" only uses house a base template, opting instead to rely on organic percussion twists and subtle, rolling drums surrounded by the duo's dreamy, glitchy vocals. On the B side, "Grow Up" is less loose and more indicative of Kompakt's usual order of things - a moody deep house tune that knows how to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
