CTBON EP (12")
Cat: EBEAMZ 005. Rel: 13 Feb 17
Deep House
  1. DJ Swagger & DJ AEdidias - "CTBON" (4:13)
  2. DJ AEdidias - "Drift" (4:52)
  3. DJ Swagger & DJ AEdidias - "Untitled" (5:15)
  4. DJ Swagger & DJ Aedidias - "Track3" (4:11)
Review: Vintage house jams courtesy of UK label E-Beamz again. Yes, the label that brought you the now infamous Winona EP by DJ Boring is back with DJ Swagger & DJ Aedidas manning the decks on the CTBON EP. It's a dusty and saturated booty house jam on the tough opener that is the title track and it has that 1080p or Lobster Theremin style grainy fuzziness to its aesthetic. They offer something a bit deeper on the ethereal vibes of "Drift" where Aedidas flies solo. On the flip, the woozy swing fuelled groove on "Untitled" has vague similarities to the Jersey garage sound of Todd Edwards, while "Track 3" goes for the classic early '90s house sound of NYC with its swing fuelled rhythm and bouncy bassline supported by pitched up sampled vocals.

  1. DJ Windows XP - "I Cried Last Night" (5:13)
  2. DJ Relationship Goals - "Do You Ever" (5:44)
Review: Their names might be a little sarcastic but the sounds are serious: the E-Beamz collective continue to cook up precision grooves. This time Windows XP and Relationship Goals take a side each with two equally chunky, warm and relentless workouts. The former gets their sensual swag on with a purring sample and a whirlwind of boompty bomp around it while the latter chugs out with widescreen kicks and a grainier, trippier sample. Both seriously kill it.

Deep House
  1. Intergalactic Jack (6:00)
  2. Work (5:24)
  3. Destiny (5:53)
  4. Shawty (4:58)
Review: Interplanetary Criminal, whoever they may be, seems perfectly suited to the sort of ironic, laissez faire attitude that spews out of the E-Beamz label. The imprint has gotten a name for releasing artists who, first and foremost, make stunning house music with a distinctively raw edge, but ones who also like to take the whole underground scene with a pinch of salt. DJ Boring, DJ Playstation and DJ Longdick have all appeared on the catalogue and, if we were one day to find out that they were actually all the same two or three artists, we wouldn't be surprised. Concerning the music, however, "Intergalactic Jack" churns its 4/4 beats through subtle jungle influences and aquatic bass tones, while "Work" takes a step deeper into the analogue aesthetic with some seriously crusty drums and sharp synth work - a beauty! "Destiny" opens the flip with a surprisingly UK kind of sound, reminding us of the best of the garage days, while "Shawty" unleashes a magnetic dose of old-school hip-hop sounds in the form of rough but effective vocal samples. Some true swing in here.

  1. Tlim Shug - "Funeral Errday" (5:19)
  2. DJ Playstation - "Press Start" (5:48)
Review: Launching with both serious and strange statements of intent: the location-unknown vinyl only E-Beamz imprint continues its wide-armed embrace of the deep with another boundary-smashing 12". US mystery man Tlim Shug paves the path with chugging Chi-town jack that wouldn't go amiss in a Farina set while Playstation (a Frenchman you may know as Maukook) lays down an Omni Trio flavoured jungle joint that's coated in pads so thick and breezy you can taste them. Delicious.
