The Asking Breath Comes To Each (limited clear vinyl 12")
Cat: CAN 008C. Rel: 26 Jun 17
  1. Swallow The Screw (feat Azar Swan) (8:20)
  2. The Standards Will Come & Go (feat Huren) (5:36)
  3. It Won't Take Me (feat Tropic Of Cancer) (5:46)
  4. Andromeda (feat Zanias) (8:09)
Review: Not to get all hyped-out, but it appears that Candela Rising is quietly racing up quite a stellar catalogue. Just to name drop a few peeps, they've put out an impressive run of techno bullets from the likes of Lakker, Eomac, Manni Dee, and now the mighty Ancient Methods, among others. Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat off! Michael Wollenhaupt is now manning the iconic techno project on his own, but if this new EP is anything to go by then it sounds like he's got it under control. From "Swallow The Screw" all the way to "Andromeda", which features the fledgling Zanias, this is high-tech rave gear with a noticeable industrial edge. In fact, the 4/4 elements almost go unnoticed amid the ocean of distortions and screeching power electronics. Of course, you'd still wanna bang this out at 4am on a dancefloor, but it's the sort of techno that the noise heads will find undoubtedly rewarding.

  3. It Won't Take Me (feat Tropic Of Cancer) (5:44)
  4. Andromeda (feat Zanias) (8:10)
Review: Berlin's Michael Wollenhaupt returns with yet more potent darkwave techno: a signature sound he has honed over the years in the Ancient Methods project which he has helmed since the departure of Conrad Protzmann a few years ago. Appearing here for London based Candela Rising, which has previously presented works by other dwellers of the industrial fringes such as Violet Poison, Eomac and Manni Dee. Starting off with the epic war anthem "Swallow The Screw" (featuring New York City's Azar Swan on vocals), its then onto the pounding jackhammer rhythms of "The Standards Will Come & Go" featuring the legendary Dave Foster aka Huren who howls hysterically through layers of distortion throughout. On the flip is the EP's most seductive moment on the slow burning and atmospheric EBM groove of "It Won't Take Me". This one features Tropic Of Cancer's Camella Lobo on vocal duties.

  1. The McDonald's Prayer (1:02)
  2. The McDonald's Prayer (Japan Blues regrind) (5:58)
  3. The McDonald's Prayer (Ossia Milkshake mix) (3:19)
Review: Seb Gainsborough and Chester Giles' ASDA project has been one of our highlights over the last couple of years. Through their punky, deranged aesthetic, the duo have given new meanings to the spoken word disposition and, in the process, left the doors wide open for interpretation. The music scene needs that. We need that. It's as if their work has cleansed the air for us and taken our minds back to a time when genres weren't such a big deal; a palette cleanser, if you will! "The McDonald's Prayer" marks their second outing on for No Corner and, much like The Abyss LP, the tune blazes through poetry with disparate shots of bass and sparse percussion stabs. This is all rendered all the more special thanks to a remix from London's Japan Blues, whose remix duties ever since that pair of bruisers for Place No Blame have become household favourites of ours, and he's on form here; a lo-fi slew of bass moulds around hazy claps and peaceful melodies to create a masterful groove. Ossia comes in for the second remix, this time stretching the original out onto some vintage Metalheadz vibes... minus the breaks. Sick.

  1. Optimal Configuration Daily (6:03)
  2. Collage Voltage (6:23)
  3. Analog Automatism (6:24)
  4. Lacquer Sequence (6:27)
Review: This debut single from Italy's Dark Division makes the plethora of other newcomers seem inexperienced by comparison. Little is known as to the exact identity of this artist, but this EP o the newly crowned Hidden Tapes will no doubt lead to a whole range of new and exciting material in the future. Sounding a but like Demdike Stare on a dub techno tip, the lead tune is a sharply stripped-back techno experiment with a constant buzz in its underbelly, and that's followed by the relatively more aggressive and glitch-friendly slant of "Collage Voltage". On the flip, "Analog Automatism" offers a full suite of noise thrashing and percussive filth, while "Lacquer Sequence" heads into a techno wormhole with no way out - a hollow, cavernous field of distortion wraps around twisted beats and dubwise echo trickery. A serious first release from Dark Division.

  5. Rimani (Unhuman remix) (5:31)
Review: DsorDNE come from Torino, Italy and have been releasing music since the late eighties. They have evolved as a group out of the electronic experimental post punk project Novostj. This new release comes courtesy of Marc Ash's Berlin based multidisciplinary project Blacksilk that 'aims to bring out the best of yet hidden experimental and obscure electronic acts.' There is proper vintage coldwave vibes on offer with the very retro "Tristi Di Rabbia" and some hard hitting industrial EBM aimed squarely at the dancefloor on "Love Is My Eversion". Current scene favourite Phase Fatale (Sonic Groove/Jealous God) hands in a grinding and adrenalised remix of "Aria" while Liber Null's Unhuman equally impresses with his rendition of "Rimani" which is darkwave techno that goes straight for the jugular.

  5. Andromeda Complex - "The Servant" (Klankman remix)
Review: Latest in the run of downright deviant activities from the Contort Yourself camp is this new collection of old and new industrial tinged bangers, leading in with the excellent noirish heat of Eindkrak's slow-stepping "Shawarma". Andromeda Complex's mid-90s rhythm-fest sits in stark, functional contrast before GDL's own contemporary rhythm science sends the record spinning in a reverie of surprisingly light-footed percussion. Circling Vultures are too enjoying the mean tempered intensity of focused drum machine programming before Klankman rounds the record off with a slightly squelchy remix of Andromeda Complex's "The Servant".

  1. Invoke (5:04)

  3. Meld (Rrose remix) (7:41)
  4. Searching In Circles (3:37)
Review: The second release from Dublin based label Eotrax comes from nomadic producer Lair. With a diverse background that includes singing classical and traditional material, the Irish sound artist has expanded her artistic approach into a diverse multi-disciplinary approach. The music has elements of mysticism, sacred geometry and energy: sound with intention. A side tracks "Invoke" and "Meld" respectively utilise the human voice to create mesmerising and esoteric drones that are chilling as much as they are beautiful. Assisted by pads and textures, likely created by digital synthesis that further add to the mysterious and evocative sound environment. On the flip, hypnotic techno heroine Rrose delivers the goods as always with her singular sound, taking you deep into the darklands of techno. Label boss Eomac; who many of you may now as one half of duo Lakker, has stated that this release is a bold move for the label, as it moves away from the dancefloor and into more diverse and experimental fields. Sounds promising indeed and we cannot wait for what is in store next.

Review: Lucerne based Prasens Editionen was founded in 2011 to give home to Zweikommasieben Magazin. Ever since, a bunch of magazines, books, zines, records, tapes and oddities have been published. After digging deep into their vast archive, they found two gems that are particularly striking: a live recording from a collaborative project (on Side A) in the form of the the textural industrial/noise journey by Nilbog entitled "Liverecording 02/11/16". On the flip Mr Pena's "TMC" (The Markt Chronicles) is a three minute gabba onslught. Mr. Pena lets loose, aiming at hardcore dancefloors while balancing between fight-or-flight terror and pacifying joy. Edition of 300.

Review: Prepare for battle... Jonathan Krohn and Karl Meier unleash their Talker machine for the first time since 2014 with three brutal machine narratives that surmise the current paranoid psyche. "Battle Standard" rolls out like a fleet of panzas, with its tribalized drums flattening everything in their path. "(Gold) Standard" takes us deeper into the warfare with depth charge percussion and industrial strength textures and atmospheres while the subversive staccato aesthetic of "Snub Nose" echoes with a sense of gunfire. Review: Robert Crash's new TC White alias offers an ulterior shade of raw here, made possible by Swiss newbie label Moto. This is proper bangin' material from start to finish, kicked off with the liquid-like patterns of "Cow", a grungy house banger masterminded by heavy folds of mutant bass and crusty drums; "Muffin" splits the tempo down to a magnificently awkward broken beat with a deep, off-kilter sensibility. On the flip, "Cool" travels under a much murkier, more swamped sort of disguise, while "Cheese" is barely able to contain its inebriated groove from melting apart amid distorted tape hiss and loose instrumentation, which leaves "Mountain" to provide a little disco comfort to this mighty fine, utterly loopy EP of true-school house music.

Review: A new Vatican Shadow release is always greeted with near adoration here at Juno Towers. Dominick Fernow's shadiest guise is still his best work, and this is especially true when his has 2 slabs of vinyl with which to express his ideas. As you can imagine, Luxor Necropolitics is a lingering, tenebrous cloud of industrial electronics and contained power noise. The moments that do transform into techno are still made up of the same rough materials that characterise all Vatican Shadow track, and that is a pale, unforgiving glow of sounds that never seem to get repetitive. Class.

Review: British techno veteran Oliver Ho has released some fine material as Broken English Club since debuting the alias back in 2014. The English Beach, Ho's second BEC full-length and first for L.I.E.S, is the audio equivalent of a trip to a run-down North Sea coastal resort on a wet Wednesday in November. Full of end-of-days electronics, stripped-back industrial techno, moody minimal wave shufflers and bubbly EBM workouts, it's as authentic a tribute to early '80s electronic experimentalism as you're likely to hear all year. Highlights include the Nitzer Ebb style bounce of "Pylon", the foreboding, desolate electronica of "Rust Ballad", the angry electro moodiness of "Carrion" and the rolling, organ-laden autumnal bliss of "The English Beach".

Review: Since kicking off all the way back in 2012, Boomkat's Death Of Rave imprint has grown solidly thanks to a consistent pool of experimental artists in the know. The likes of Powell, Delroy Edwards, Merzbow and Mark Fell have all featured, but the last few years have been about scouting their own talent from the ground up. Newcomer Croww is one such artists they've managed to find and his debut LP, Prosthetics, is precisely the sort of gear that they needed. There are four segments of "Prosthetics", and neither one of them have the calm and pace to hold back any of their terror and distortion. On the contrary, Croww makes a point of throwing the listener head-first into a treacherous world of hardware explosions and beat stabbings, all roughly wrapped up in a sort of metallic-like coating. It's one to watch out for - both artist and release.

Review: With the renewed attention surrounding industrial and EBM in the last few years (and its influence on techno, again), it's important that someone with credentials gives the new generation a decent history lesson. Fitting that Berghain resident and MDR boss Marcel Dettmann curates a compilation of classics from the sound's heyday: here's someone who actually lived through it. As part of Amsterdam imprint Dekmantel's Selectors Series, these gems from yesteryear should certainly set the record straight and provide solid reference points for new school retroverts. Highlights (and there's many) include: Belgian EBM legends Front 242 with "Don't Crash", Philadelphia industrial underdogs Executive Slacks' "So Mote It Be" and the mandatory Cabs track comes in the form of "Low Cool" (the Marcel Dettmann Edit, no less). It wouldn't be a proper industrial comp without a bit of Wax Trax! would it? Label staples Ministry appear with their 1982 song "Same Old Madness", a period in the band's history that some consider their finest.

Review: Alex Akers' Forces moniker is about the only credible source of contemporary EBM in our world, and this debut album on Fleisch is kind of a big deal if you've been patiently awaiting a follow-up to 2013's Melbourne Music Week Mercat. As you can imagine, these six tunes waste no time in getting their point across, with "Run" heading straight down the path of inglorious doom and cacophonous, beat-driven distortion. "I Don't Measure" still retains Forces' characteristic use of harsh beat phasing but the groove is a much leaner affair that's more suitable to dancefloor use, while "We Shared A Lover" goes for the neo-romantic touch. The edits of "Idolize" and "Ice" recall classic Nitzer Ebb head-banging of the highest calibre, whereas "Bell Of Light" takes a turn for the unexpected, landing us in a dark, cerebral atmosphere of booming sounds and sci-fi effects. Fleisch is the place!

Review: Given that his only previous release was an ultra-limited cassette a couple of years back, it would be fair to say that this is the first time most will have come across experimental beat-maker Hermes. Almost Human, then, is an opportunity to assess his musical agenda. Shuffling between harsh, modular-driven industrial soundscapes, angry ambience and electronic experiments that sound like an axe-wielding lunatic has taken over the studio, it's a fiendishly forthright and singular album that rewards repeated listens. Hermes' grasp of sound design and love of clandestine soundscapes is strangely alluring, and there are breathtaking chinks of light amongst the producer's usual paranoid darkness (see the stunning "Sons of Elohim" for starters).

Review: During the early 1980s, Swiss synthesizer fetishist turned producer Michael Antener switched between two artistic aliases, Nacht Raum and Bande Berne Crematoire. Until recently, both projects were unknown to all but a handful of obsessive new-wave collectors. Expanded 1982-84 gathers together the best of the producer's work under his two pseudonyms, throwing in detailed liner notes (contained within inserts packed with the album) to allow listeners to understand Antener's musical journey a little better. Musically, there's much to enjoy, from delay-laden spoken word pieces and throbbing, proto-EBM workouts, to dark synth-scapes, woozy post-electro pop and stylish coldwave compositions. Throughout, you can almost smell the mascara.

Review: Stephen O'Malley, the dark lord of drone himself, returns to our charts with a devilishly tenebrous extended EP that is not for the faint of heart. Out through the ever-impressive iDEAL Recordings, this is true drone at its most poignant; none of that pussy seaside gear they push down in the balearics! "Track 1" and "Track 2" are made of the same cloth, both trashing distorted guitars in the air while the bass rings and flows without any control whatsoever. The B-side, once again, allows that same note to extend into further doom thanks to the addition of an other layer or drones circling the infested airwaves; naturally, "Track 4" brings this swarm of harsh sonics to a close... but what if we could just carry on for a bit longer?

Review: Dominic Fernow's Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement project might not be the most productive of the man's monikers these days, but it is certainly not forgotten or overlooked by any team member of the Juno HQ. In fact, this reissue of 2011's Green Amulet Crafts Supernatural Qualities, out once again through Hospital Productions, has been missing from our shelves for quite some time, and we have to say that its reappearance is very much welcomed. Here goes - "A Slave Boy That Died An Awful Death For Not Keeping His Owner's Horses, He Helps People Who Are Looking For Lost Things" is a classic slice of RSE nastiness, where distant remnants of techno drums are overshadowed by vast plaines of rich power electronics and ghostly noise infusions of the deadliest variety; while this isn't exactly your classic, stand-up techno, it is very much a journey in its own right. On the flip we have another poem called "An Old Hag That Wears Shoes & Stomps Over People's Stomachs At Night Making Them Breathless", which is essentially a continuation of the prior track's descent into the fiery depths of the inferno, or rather, a casual studio session in Fernow's ever tenebrous mind. A hot tip, indeed!
