Review: REPRESS ALERT: Australia is known for its Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, the vast desert wilderness and unique animal species including kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses; but is also known for its well-crafted music output and deep love for optimistic sensual tunes. This is the case here with the first release of a mysterious project called Ponzu Island, there is absolutely no info available on the artist, so let your ears judge without prejudice. His first effort comes in the form of a 3 track EP including "Super Koto", "Ponzu Beach" and "Ponzu Logic", they sound like if Morgan Geist and Todd Terje took some acid and locked themselves in a room with a sea view, a synth, and a computer. Welcome to Ponzu Island.

To complete the EP the label counted with Andras Fox, another Aussie who has already gained much respect for his simply-perfect micro house productions (btw don't miss his live set if you ever have the chance). Andras revisits the track "Super Koto" in the form of an extended mix with a slower bpm and his magic touch here and there. On the flip side Apersonal's local producer Trujillo does his usual thing remixing "Ponzu Logic", closing the EP into a deep and darker territory. By now you will be in the middle in the desert asking yourself how you got there..

  3. Harrison BDP - "Decompression" (7:54)
  4. ManooZ - "Tinted Windows" (6:05)
Review: STRICTR Records is a brand new imprint from Aix-En-Provence in France. This is the label's debut outing, and contains four alluring tracks for discerning deep house DJs. Matthieu Fauborg's epic opener - the tactile, melodious, dreamy and life-affirming "Please Stay", which more than justifies its 10-minute duration - feels like a statement of intent, while Dub Striker's "Mood" recalls classic New York and New Jersey bumpers of old. On the flip, Harrison BDP gets busy with Syclops style synth bass, floatation tank chords and shuffling percussion on "Decompression", before Manooz goes ultra-deep on the dusty and woozy "Tinted Windows". A very fine debut, all told.

Review: While he's been plenty busy on his own labels since making a comeback, it's great to see Nail's impeccable form getting picked up elsewhere. Politics Of Dancing is a natural home for his razor sharp tracks, as is evident from the off with the deadly thrust of tech house sizzler "Dub Me 2". "U Gotta Be There" is a more dreamy affair, but there's still a searing heat coming off those beats that will work on all kinds of floors. Cab Drivers are a smart fit for remix duties, and they turn "Dub Me 2" into an even more tripped out twist on the tech house format.

  3. Make Love (6:30)
  4. Magic City (5:51)
Review: On the two releases we've heard to date, Cody Currie has barely put a foot wrong, delivering a string of tracks that brilliantly join the dots between dusty, soul-flecked U.S deep house and hip-hop style sample-based beat jams. For this outing on Razor 'n' Tape Reserve, he applies the same approach to the world of disco and boogie. So, we get the rolling, sun-kissed warmth and gentle filter tweakery of wide-eyed disco house shuffler "Movin' Smoke", the slack-tuned jazz snares, swirling chords and bubbly synthesizer samples of "Infinity I & II" and the swirling, string-drenched orchestral disco-house bounce of "Magic City". Arguably best of all, though, is the more driving "Make Love", where Currie's ability to select and manipulate samples within a bumping deep house framework is best exemplified.

Review: Michael James strolls up to Constant Black with yet more of that refined minimal house goodness, throwing down all kinds of late night freakery to get bodies moving in the club. "Angels" is utterly funky without having to spell it out, keeping the drums simmering at a micro level and using a haunting vocal thread to fill out the space. "Seven" meanwhile is a busier affair, bustling with rhythmic accents that bring a very different kind of funk to the party. "Flightmode" then sends the EP on its way with an uplifting cut that sounds as though it came from above the clouds.

Review: Eleven years after he introduced us to his Mr White alias with the acidic bliss of "The Sun Can't Compare", Heard returns with two more extensive, immersive and stylised slices of house. "Virtual Emotion" is a breath-taking progressive odyssey that resonates in that perfect sweet spot between house and techno. "Supernova" takes a much more structured route with full nagging vocals and a sense of proto house theatre running throughout. With promise of a new album (his first in over 12 years), it's an exciting time to be a Larry Heard fan.

Review: Iron Curtis' back catalogue is a formidable beast within the realms of deep and tech house, touching on labels like Morris Audio, Jackoff, Sudden Drop and Mule Electronique. He's intermittently popped up on Hudd Traxx as well, and he returns with a fulsome new EP that hints at a forthcoming second part. "Lights" is a bold, chiseled peak timer with some emphatic string stabs coursing through it, while "Captured" takes a slinkier route without dulling the impact of the Curtis studio approach. "22 Days" is a funkier concern that lets the low end synths do the brunt of the work, and then "My Humming Machines" rounds the EP off with a warm and bubbling deep house roller for a cosier part of the night.

Review: Fully tapped into the true US tradition of soulful house music, Riccardo Masi has been delivering the goods for the past couple of years to labels like Uzuri and his own Wrong Notes Records. On this new single the good vibes just keep on flowing, kicking off with Erik Rico's on-point vocal draped over "Reaching". Rico also forms the centre point of "No One Else", another masterclass in pattering drums and honey-coated keys. "Tortellini Jazz" shores up on the B-side, drafting in Paolo Campani to lay down some sultry sax tones over the mellow chords and playful Rhodes trills.

  4. Terrestre - "Secondary Inspection Theme"
Review: The cast of characters across the latest Future Primitive release are perhaps unlikely bedfellows, but they sit together comfortably on this 12". Mike Ink is in a most reflective mood on "Income", letting the beat fall slow and pushing the gently pulsing synth lines to the foreground. Welsh wizard DJ Guy lets the tape grit shine through on his wonderfully disheveled "ASII100". That leaves it to an early alias of Murcof, Terrestre, to take on the B-side with the more dynamic tones of "Botas De Oro" and "Secondary Inspection Theme". The rich percussion and hypnotic mood are a joy to listen to, while the easy pace should sit comfortably in the warm up zone of the dance.

Review: Jamie Paton has been a regular fixture on [Emotional] Especial since the label first came to light, conjuring up a seductive blend of leftfield dance music with a broad range of influences. This time around he's turning out some of his remixes, leading in with the sweaty, dense throb of Sexy Merlin's "See You In The Dark". Guy Schlalom's "Habibi" by way of contrast becomes a lighter confection peppered with bubbly synth lines and an almost poppy persuasion. Blancmange's "Feel Me" has a more cosmic lilt in its voluminous tones, and "Overdrive" by Gatos Negros drifts out on an off-kilter kind of boogie for all manner of deviant dancers to get head-nodding to.

Review: The Memory Box parties have been celebrating the classic foundations of acid house for some time, and now they've launched a label to push their love of squelchy 303 even further. Robin Ball steps up for the first release with some classic examples of how to ride the well-worn machine and keep it sounding fresh like the first rays of morning through the warehouse window. "Acid Stomp" needs little explanation - it teases with some subdued 303 warbles before the real meat of the track kicks in and the frequency starts freaking. "Acid Duck" is a more reduced affair, while collaboration with Neil Tibbetts "Sqolch" works a few deep house elements into the mix. MVDC finish the EP off with the abrasive, grungy thrust of "Back In The Dayz".

Review: Dan Snaith's 27-track Fabriclive bounty just keeps on giving. Following the likes of "Face To Face" come two more outstanding dancefloor tracks. Rough around the edges, off-the-grid, visceral yet touching, "Hey Drum" hypnotises with an almost militant feel before suddenly switching into an outrageously uplifting breakdown while "The Truth" taps into the roots of Chicago with a footloose kickdrum and warm fluctuating synths. Both absolutely kill it - which you probably already knew anyway. Most of us have been counting down the day for this vinyl release since we first heard the Fabriclive mix.

Review: Dubtraxx is new on the scene, as is their label Rhythm N Vibe, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security - this is seriously heavyweight gear. "Soundbwoy Request" is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. "Towards '99" is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous A-side. The "2000 Tribute Mix" of "Next Millenium" meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you'd expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

Review: De Gama has previously proven to be a master of dancefloor-focused musical fusion, delivering a string of singles that gleefully mine a variety of rhythmic styles from around the World for inspiration (most notably the polyrhythms of Africa and South America). He's at it again here, with flipside "Mantekilla" brilliantly joining the dots between dusty, horn-heavy Afrobeat and rolling deep house. While impressive, it's A-side "Yebo" - a heavy chunk of house-tempo dancefloor dub with clear Afrobeat influences - that's really floating our boat. Either way, it's another predictably strong 12" from the experienced producer.

Review: Dutch producer Sota is the latest to be snapped up by Ornate Music, presenting his second ever release having first come to light with his own Talaman label earlier in the year. "Subsonica" rides on a tough house groove, keeping the elements as spartan as possible while heading straight into the deep end of the night. "Inverse" is a skippier affair that deals with heavily processed synth flares and a deadly swinging groove, and then "Chatka" finishes the EP off with a dreamy cut peppered with delay processing for the quintessential dubby trip through refined 4/4 dance music.

Review: "First Stomp", a bubbly chunk of Clavinet-laden electrofunk/Balearic fusion with Latin influences and clear nods to proto-house, was one of the highlights of Jex Opolis's recent debut album, Ravines. Here it gets the remix treatment, with the producer himself delivering a pair of club-ready interpretations. On the A-side you'll find the dreamy but club-ready "NYC Dub", a swirling, dreamy and loved-up affair that makes greater use of the original's Latin chants as well as some fresh new cowbell rhythms. The B-side "Vocal UP Mix" is an altogether more radical transition, with Jex Opolis re-imagining the cut as a cheery chunk of Puerto Rican proto-house complete with Latin piano riffs and locked-in drum machine percussion.

Review: From Russia with rushes; Paolo Rocco recruits newblood Lessi S for a jam that chugs and shrouds with a vague sense of late night/early morning naughtiness. Simple, warm, dubby and jacking, it's the ideal choice for an equally chop-slapping East End Dubs remix. Turkish Havantepe takes over the B with an uptempo, driving piece of progressive tech. Lolloping with soft bass fluctuations and cosmic synths, it's a perfect transition from the light to dark sides of the night. Roger Gerresson takes the remix to a much lighter side with a subtle, restrained deep twist. Serene.

If you picked up on last year's "BF 001" you'll know what's at play here; restrained, undulating grooves with just the right amount of soul to massage and the right amount of heaviness for full physical persuasion. "When Will The Day Come?" is pure house soul with its glistening instrumentation and happy jacked beats while "Don't Call Me Lo-Fi Baby" dusts off the divas for a heads-down hypnosis. On this new double pack for House Crime he goes it alone, bringing the kind of raw, off-kilter but ultimately fun vibe that the label seems to plump for. "Born In 86" is an absolute head driller of a track, looped up but utterly addictive, while "Diastemia" offers a very different kind of disco-infused groove. This personality split runs throughout, ensuring there's never a dull moment diving into any of these sides of wax. Check "The Toy Is Mine" if you need proof that Octopus knows how to throw it down.

Review: The latest Love Notes welcomes Perseus Traxx to the fold with just the kind of romantic, classically informed hardware jam action that the label so dearly loves. "Fears Of Simplicity" kicks off on a celestial tip that reaches skyward with its plush layers of electronic melodics, while "Exhilaration Of The New" sports a distinctly Mr. Fingers-flavoured vibe that's impossible to dislike. "Half Heard Whispers" is a lighter jam that floats along on an airy bed of pads, and then "In Our Dreams" takes the prize as the prime cut on the record, digging deep to depict a more mysterious version of the old-skool house music we know and love.

Review: Alex Font and his Acme label continue to champion the sound of Romanian electronic music with this second installment of Mis Hermanos Rumanos, following the excellent first turn with Sepp. Faster steps up first with the driving, chunky tech house sound of "Channel 1.0", threading subtle but snarling synth shapes through the straight-up drums with poise. Font gets deeper on "Cuentame Cosas Tuyas", using a whole lot of subby bass and pinging other crisp tones over the top of the mix. Nu Zau meanwhile keeps things decidedly hypnotic on the immersive "Return", and then Font finishes the EP off with the more fragmented sounds of "Frentes Abiertos".

The latest transmission on the dusty house imprint comes from STL, whose disheveled sounds is a natural fit for what has come before on Blundar. "Track 1" peers through a thick haze of smoke, exhaling pads and drones and keeping the bass pulsing throughout. The rest of the EP is given over to experimental and ambient tones, with the second track on Side B being an especially arresting piece loaded with melancholic contemplation. It's another strong addition to the Blundar repertoire, and another example of STL's skills and adaptability in the studio.

Now the alias is revived on Sound Reflection in a shimmering, twirling expression of broken beat and boogie sensibilities for those who like their beats soul n' sun drenched. It's actually his Quad IBB alias that serves up the "original mix" of "Vocoder So Sexy", and it's nothing short of stunning. The rich layers of vocals cavort with the expressive key changes and sharply angled beats, making for a truly striking cut that sounds equally fresh in its instrumental form on the B side.

Review: Dirk-Jan Hanegraaff, Gert-Jan Bijl and Mark Ripmeester released more music via more aliases than you've had Nandos... The proliferation of electronic gold coming from their Dutch laboratory is staggering. Celebrating 25 years, It's Thinking was one of the most significant projects of the time. Flexing from the darkest dancefloor to the lightest of lounges, the document is still as immersive and innovative as it was in 92. The title track (famously remixed by Bushwacka years later) is the epitome of everything about early 90s house while "Surviving Desire" is a darker exploration of techno and the then-burgeoning influence of Detroit while in between we have the daydreamy synth melodies of "Down In A Bubble" and the joyous house uplift of "Mild At Heart". Still resonating hard to this day, there's no overthinking this one.

Review: Bristol house imprint Banoffee Pies return with more subtle and hypnotic grooves. On the A side is the mysterious Jay Anderson with "Didn't Care Too Much". While not much is known of him yet, we are sure that will change once people listen to this track: deep minimal house that crosses over into electro much in the vein of Frenchman TC80 or what his peers on Japan's Cabaret imprint are doing right now. Next up, Greek up and comer Simonas Paplauskas serves up the rolling and entrancing afterhours cut "Untitled" which takes its cues from the current sounds of Romania: an immaculate production. On the flip, the entire side is handed over to Ukrainian producer Peshka, who delivers another jagged yet downright wacky and unique take on reduced grooves with "Basic Instinct".

  4. U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial (9:08)
Review: Madteo is not praised enough for his contribution to the modern dance sound. The Italian-born NYC 'insider', as he likes to call himself, has put out less music over the last 2-3 years, clearly preferring to keep himself out of the scene. But, this doesn't come as a surprise to us seeing as he's always resided on the outskirts of what looms in the dance circles. Scientrysts lands on his own imprint, M.A.D.T.E.O., and the release sees the producer head back to his shift club mode, a sound which was first championed by Rabih Beaini's Morphine Doser. "Scientrysts & Errorist" gets 2 mixes, the 'Stomp' version bangs out heavy drums over hazy, echoing sonics, while the 'Club' mix picks up the pace and lays down a handsome portion of dusty percussion. On the flip, "U$b Schtick & Turnt Burial" lands with the minimal hardware fuzz of the 'Psy' mix first, before delivering a sparse selection of bass waves on the original cut. The boss is back to his best...

Review: The latest tall tale from Spain's Amazing Stories camp comes from little-known deep house storyteller Cobert, who invites us to revel in The Act of Micro B. The action comes thick and fast from the moment the stylus touches the record, with opener "Jupiter Disco" - think Adonis jamming with the Radiophonic Workshop and a gaggle of bleep-loving robots - setting us up for the adventures to come. "Tesseract" is a pleasingly bass-heavy chunk of analogue sounding deep house/tech-house fusion, while "Planet Hunter" sits somewhere between intergalactic electro and skewed analogue house. As for brilliantly titled closer "Dog Shits in Snow", its combination of acid house, Detroit techno and British bleep tropes is expertly executed.

Review: Gramaphone crew member and Smart Bar resident Garrett David is proudly extending his city's musical dynasty. The Chicago wiz-kid lands on the Residual imprint with four killer house-techno hybrids, each one of them unafraid to unleash some proper jackin' business. "Rhythm Box" is your prototypical slice of raw house, catapulted into insanity by some raucous EBM-style vocal samples, whereas "FRXS Medley" reminds us of DJ Funk's more minimal material for Dance Mania. The B-side kicks off with "Don't Fuck With Shmoo", an utterly deranged piece of gnarly analogue house funk, and ties this magnetic EP up with the much smoother, jazzy vibes of "Wassup".

Review: Having helped launch the Sugarhouse label with his Paradise Forum brethren, Jamie Paul gets a chance to show off his talents on his debut 12", adding to the label's already impressive catalogue with another swathe of classy house jams with a modern twist. "Double G" definitely sports the chops for the peak of the night, but it's also shot through with a welcome weirdness and a fuzzy warmth that should find favour with a wide range of DJs. "Even So" is a more laid back, bumping affair that matches the smooth finish of the A-side, but says something different altogether. Label mate Maurice Jnr meanwhile serves up a remix of Even So that nudges the delicate tones in a techier direction.

Review: As if his Bear Funk album Back To Business wasn't quite enough sonic silver for the summer, Cali conjurer returns with this sublime 12" on Rollmottle's Sentrall. Presented on clear vinyl, both cuts tickle and tease with BB's signature ebb and flow synth aesthetic. "Extended Away" is a maze of loops that canon with a sweet washing affect without losing the focus of the groove while "New Aged" hits with more of a springy hook, vibrant synths and strong sense of uplift throughout. Both heavily textured yet spacious and unhurried, once again it's business as usual for everyone's favourite broker.

Review: This is how you do timeless.... You get two OG artists to open up both sides of your 12". On the A we have William Rosario's legendary DAT Project with a light-footed jam that jacks up neatly with classic the classic rolling snares that only a man who cut his teeth in the early 90s. Similarly on the B we have Transitive Elements who also came through a series of warehouse shakers in the early 90s. With warm keys and a sweet drum shuffle, it's as authentic as it can possibly be. Complete with two star-lit soul-touched grooves from MLH's Victor & Christian, this really is an exceptional deep house document.
