Fum Lenes EP

Fum Lenes EP (red vinyl 12")
Cat: PLZ 015. Rel: 23 Mar 15
  1. Fum Lenes (6:39)
  2. Far Away Far Away (6:34)
  3. Fum Lenes (Ada Kaleh remix) (10:57)
Review: In the rampage of Romanian breakbeat minimal productions, Pleasure Zone always manages to stand head and shoulders above the rest with a keen ear for forward-thinking production and unique atmospheres. Adjustment Bureau make for a logical fit in that regard, even with just one previous record on Hypertone last year. The title track "Fum Lenes" moves with limber percussion but it's the sensual pad tones and spooky piano trills that really mark the track out as something special. There's a moodier flavour to "Far Away Far Away", but the production is no less crafty, while things get really freaky on the B side as Ada Kaleh drops a lengthy remix of "Fum Lenes" for the more devoutly minimal heads.

Review: All Inn Records is a Hungarian label run by Italian minimal legend Giovanni Verrina in conjunction with Coldfish aka Laurine Frost. and Norbert Dunai. However, All Inn Limited returns with another brilliant edit.. and as always it's by an anonymous artist! On the A side we have "Diggers Daughter" a rolling and functional house cut that will appeal to fans of sounds coming from Apollonia or Oscillat in more recent times. On the flipside, the party vibe continues on "Bypass" which is a much deeper and woozy groove more suited to the after-hours.

Ku Kanjani EP

Cat: IV 33. Rel: 23 May 11
  1. Ku Kanjani (version 1)
  2. Ku Kanjani (version 2)
Review: Ame have always been an inventive pair, but even by their standards this is a departure. Along with Amampondo, they've laid down a delicious chunk of ethno-house that just bristles with summery energy. There are infectious lead and backing vocals from the Cape Town based troupe, looped-up acoustic guitars, heavy electronic melodies and, naturally, some deliciously epic builds based around deep organ chords. While the first version is closer in style to much of their previous output, it's the second version that really hits the spot - if only for the sweetness of the production and the summery strut of the composition. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but we think it's spiffing.

Review: When discussing his new album, Auntie Flo producer Brian D'Souza has promised that it would be a far more expansive, complex and densely layered set than its' predecessor. With Theory Of Flo, he's made good on that promise. Produced with regular collaborator Esa, it features an impressive cast-list of vocalists and musicians from around the World, including Red Snapper drummer Rich Thair, Ghanaian singer Anbuley, Noisettes' Shingai Shoniwa, and a swathe of Cuban players recorded during a trip to the country last year. Musically, it's similarly rich and expansive, blending D'Souza's usual global influences - primarily from Africa and South America - with a smooth, attractive and melodious take on house music.

Review: It's been a long time coming, but Julio Bashmore's debut album, Knockin' Boots, is finally here. With releases on Dirtybird, Futureboogie, and mixes for Mixmag and FM radio, the hat loving Bristol producer has come a long way throughout the last five years. Knockin' Boots is a ten-track blend of soulful house and minimal-edged bass music, with the title track itself being something of a Chicago stomper. There's plenty of sublime sampling within Bashmore's house servings, such as on the excellent and discofied "Hold On" featuring Sam Dew, "What's Mine Is Mine", and the juke-inspired "Bark". The LP also verges on the pop end of things with tunes like "For Your Love" or "Rhythm Of Auld", and it's simply a pleasure to play from beginning to end. Bashmore coming through diverse and explosive, as per usual. Ya need.

  4. Glyn - "Kevin Lomax" (Orson Wells remix) (5:39)
Review: Ron Wilson's 777 serves up more raw and rusty house jams on a new various artists sampler entitled Internal Affairs: this is serious! On the A side is newcomer Brighton with "Tesla" (Leaves Remix), while Frankfurt's Orson Wells gives us "Ratio" where Saarbruckens finest: Roger 23 gets on the remix and delivers a lush deep acid rendition this side of Tin Man. On the flip, Leaves returns with the impressive "Third Floor" getting an awesome remix by Pablo Mateo; working those drum computers to impressive effect as always. Finally, Orson Wells stays on too; working the nightshift on his remix for Glyn's "Kevin Lomax" and giving it a lo-fi, neon lit makeover that will appeal to retroverts dancing well into the morning at Robert Johnson next Sunday morning.

Review: Despite having names of golden-grilled rappers, Bronxy and Rata are responsible for minimal rhythms and cocktail party effect vocals, not straight up rhymes and sampled beats. The EP moves from the clickety-clack of a synth-studded "Where's My Boat" on the A1 to the sublime deep house of "Thrown Building" on the B2 - a track you could imagine DJ Sprinkles playing at one of her Deeperama nights. In between these are the funkified beats and austere atmospherics of "Screen Of Death" while the bluesy note that occasionally hums in "The Touch" is a sweet nuance of this intriguing EP.

Review: Berlin's Cab Drivers are the real deal. If their extensive collection of classic Roland machines wasn't enough, they even sequence them all on an old Atari ST you don't get more purist than that. Paul and Augustowsky's new track "Correspondence" has all the hallmarks of their signature sound: bumpin', melodic, rolling and emotive. You know; the Cab Drivers sound! On the flip, fellow Berlin minimal techno legend Audio Werner steps up to deliver a more darker and emotive remix that strays on the dubbier side of things and we loved it: Tip!

  3. Wallshaker (Sven's Garden Of Eden dub) (10:43)
Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: Chopstick & Johnjon are Chi-Thien Nguyen and John Muder; head honchos of Suol Music based out of Berlin. Versions 2 follows up the first volume which was released back in 2012 and on this one we've got some really great grooves. Take for instance the sunny, bouncy and slightly retro flavoured deep house of "Keep It Real Son" which will appeal to fans of Tuff City Kids or Kim Brown. Also there's the cowbell driven nu-disco boogie of "I Need Your Love" which is absolutely infectious and "String For Fools"; definitely the most serious track on here and will create some sure moments of dancefloor drama with those strings reminiscent of hits like "Full Clip" and, well.. "Strings For Life" of course!

Paean (limited 10")
Cat: 38 BC. Rel: 10 Dec 12
  1. Paean (Lone remix)
  2. Paean (Coda)
  3. Paean (Lukid remix)
Review: Given that the precocious Nathan Fake was a pioneer in the area of melodic, indie meets electronic, it's strange to hear him calling a release Paean. Despite this, it's business as usual for the UK producer, with a cascade of melodic lines and psychedelic modulations unfolding over a rattling break beat. By contrast, the Coda remix is but a short, noisy outro and Lukid's version is a noisy, bass-heavy broken beat reshape. It's the Lone version that most articulately captures the spirit of the original version. The synth sounds redefine the term 'breezy' and, over brittle break beats, veer into melodies so sweet that they could replace the sugar in your morning cup of coffee.

  3. I'm So Deep
Review: Rush Hour's latest reissue focus is Vincent Floyd, a producer with a small clutch of 12? releases in the mid-90s for Dance Mania, Relief and Gherkin Records offshoot Resound Records. Although more from the producer is promised in the year to come, the first record is Your Eyes, a reissue the producer's debut for Dance Mania. Released back in 1990, the five-track 12? brandished a title track that was pretty much a perfect example of vocal deep house from the era, and this reissued edition from Rush Hour pares the record down to just three tracks, with the Chan-featuring title cut complemented by an instrumental and "I'm So Deep," described by the label as a "sinister haunting instrumental jackin track".

  3. Each Day Is The First Day (6:02)
Review: Moonrise Hill Material co-founder Folamour makes his first appearance on Dublin's All City imprint, in the process delivering one of the most pleasingly positive deep house cuts we've heard for some time. "Shakkei" is marked out by wonderfully flowing piano lines of the kind that once turned "Strings of Life" into an all-time anthem. These combine wonderfully with the producer's loose-but-heavy, drum machine rich groove and near Balearic chord progressions. It's something of a stunner, all told. Elsewhere, Folamour explores deeper and dreamier pastures on "Maybe I Did Burn Ya Place", before reaching for the Roy Ayers style vibraphone, cheeky jazz-funk samples and Andres-esque grooves on "Each Day Is A Frist Day".

Wega EP (12")

  1. Wega (6:42)
  2. Pollux (7:46)
Review: Since 2012, Frankey & Sandrino have exceeded all expectations and are now easily one of the most alluring house duos on the scene. With releases for imprints such as Drumpoet Community, Mule Musiq, Kompakt and Innervisions, among others, their name is instantly recognisable for their sound and artistic diversity. This new EP for Innervisions leads with "Wega", a tune that manages to blend a variety of musical elements under one roof; a minimal percussion groove is wrapped tightly around a myriad of Hispanic chanting, rhythmic distortions and a tubby undertone, equating to one gorgeous dance escapade. "Pollux" is similarly sparse and multi-faceted, except that the vocal swarms are now replaced by a sublime cascade of crystalline synths, aqueous electronics, and their inimitable use of outernational flavours.

Review: New Richie Hawtin DJ mixes are something of a rarity these days, with his last commercially available selection dropping back in 2012. It's perhaps unsurprising, then, that he's decided to indulge himself a little on this celebration of his Enter Ibiza residency, which stretches to an impressive four discs. The first CD is largely deep, woozy and tactile, with deep, tribal and tech-house fare from the likes of Pig & Dan and Marc Houle. Cuts from John Tejada, Radio Slave, Paul Johnson, DMX Krew and Daniel Bell help give the second disc a bumpin', tech-funk feel, while the third disc attractively flits between melodious, progressive influenced fodder and booming, bass-heavy fare. As for the last disc, it indulges Hawtin's lesser-celebrated love of ambient, via a range of evocative, spacey and becalmed cuts.
