Review: Given that Ricardo Villalobos was one of a handful of guest producers who featured on Oren Ambarchi's recent Hubris album - a krautrock-influenced minimalist techno exploration that also boasted contributions from Jim O'Rourke and Mark Fell, amongst others - it seems fitting that he's been roped in to provide two new remixes. The Chilean's contribution to the album was largely rhythm-based, and his two lengthy Variations - each stretched across one side of wax - promote undulating, heads-down dancefloor hypnotism above all else. Naturally, his drum programming and use of subtle stylistic shifts is as on-point as ever, with Ambarchi's original textures being manipulated into mind-altering new shapes.

Review: Famously, Joey Anderson delivered the first 12" on Acid Test's experimentally minded offshoot, Avenue 66. That was Under The Cherry Moon, one of the lauded New Jersey producer's finest releases to date. Happily, Anderson's belated return to Avenue 66 is equally as impressive. There's much to admire throughout, from the rising and falling synthesizer refrains of "If One Cares, They Act Different", to the deep, mystical and wonderfully picturesque deep house thrills of B-side cut "Vase", which is undoubtedly one of Anderson's most beautiful tracks to date. The track in between, "Peace There", also impresses via metronomic kick drums, dreamy chords, and crystalline synthesizer melodies.

Review: Given the success of the first two installments of the Editions series, it's little surprise to see XDB put together a third volume for his Metrolux imprint. He's assembled another crack team of international contributors, too. Autre and Xinner join forces on opener "Nebula", a fine combination of low-slung techno drums, restless electronics and deep space sonics. Autre goes solo to deliver the fluttering, late night hypnotism of "Seiryu", before Kryptic Universe steals the show with "01309 Stairways", a superb chunk of rolling intelligent techno that features an extended ambient intro. Owen Jay and Brian James round things off with the distorted drum machine hits and woozy riffs of "Chordless" (which, to be fair, is an accurate title).

Review: *** REPRESS ** Aaron Carl's 1996 Detroit classic "Crucifix" has become an object of obsession for Millions of Moments with the Japanese label having already released remixes from Quantec and Rob Modell two years ago. On this release, Metrolux boss XDB is at the controls for three different versions with the deep burn of the main remix the most impressive. Comes on clear vinyl with a screen printed MOM logo across the white paper envelope sleeve.

Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

  4. Moment (5:38)
Review: Arguably no producer made a greater contribution to the Italian dream house sound - that most loved-up of deep house sub-genres - than Don Carlos, AKA Carlo Troja. If you need proof, then we advise checking out this collection of overlooked gems hand-picked by Echovelt Records. Opener "Inspiration" (taken from 2001's The Music On My Mind LP but reminiscent of his early '90s work) and closer "Moment" are both pure distillations of the colourful, sauced-eyed ethos of dream house. "Ambient Underground" - one of three selections from 1993's Aqua - is more tech-tinged and hypnotic, despite the presence of a spine-tingling breakdown, while "Dharma" is closer to his New Jersey-inspired work with Stefano Tirone under the Montego Bay alias.

Review: Chopstick & Johnjon are Chi-Thien Nguyen and John Muder; head honchos of Suol Music based out of Berlin. Versions 2 follows up the first volume which was released back in 2012 and on this one we've got some really great grooves. Take for instance the sunny, bouncy and slightly retro flavoured deep house of "Keep It Real Son" which will appeal to fans of Tuff City Kids or Kim Brown. Also there's the cowbell driven nu-disco boogie of "I Need Your Love" which is absolutely infectious and "String For Fools"; definitely the most serious track on here and will create some sure moments of dancefloor drama with those strings reminiscent of hits like "Full Clip" and, well.. "Strings For Life" of course!

Review: With Bliq operating at a rate of roughly two 12"s per year, it's possible that this debut release from Deemonlover is the last vinyl transmission we'll see from the London-based label in 2014. If that's the case, there is plenty of mileage in the four tracks that make up the Manticore 12" and there's plenty of house and techno selectors out there that will be pulling for this record for some time yet. Fans of the Dial label will certainly find much to embrace in the buoyant yet melancholic opening track "Velcro" which engages subtle shifts in pitch. This atmospheric opener is something of a false dawn however, as Deemonlover duck between the abstract ghetto house of "J.a.a.p." and the dusty Naples style deepness of "Violet Kink" before closing on the crunching peak time techno of "Till Primals".

Review: Deemonlover's only two records thus far were both released this year on Bliq. The first was an impressive five-track debut Manticore and "Velcro" from that release shares the same minimal, rustling and watery quality of the A-side from this Chorozon record. "Full Of Holes" falls somewhere between a dubby Markus Suckut production and something Dario Zenker might make mixed with ambient field recordings captured from what sounds like a medina somewhere in Morocco. XDB turns in his best rework of the year with a Dark Forces mix, layering deep and woozy house chords underneath a flowing groove of sublime percussion and thrumming tom drums.

Review: Live In Toronto is the sixth installment of John Digweed's long-running and decidedly epic Live In... mix series, and captures a particularly special night at Guvernment (a club soon to shut it's doors) earlier this year. There are few surprises, of course, but plenty to cheer. Digweed is a past master at eking maximum emotion and dancefloor pleasure from little known opiate tech-house, dub-soaked big room techno and twinkling, progressive-tinged grooves. That's what you get here: a rising and falling, three-disc journey that retains your attention throughout, thanks to a blend of long mixes, surprising turns, heads-down rhythms and choice cuts from the likes of Guy J, October, Nick Warren, Audion and Sunshine Jones.

Review: Thanks to the recent success of founder member DJ Sports, Denmark's Regelbau collective is currently riding the crest of a wave. Here, fellow Regelbau stalwart DJ Central gets a chance to showcase his wares on the crew's in-house label. The first mix of "Drive" is a wonderfully woozy, spacey and laidback affair - despite the presence of skittish, house-tempo hardcore breakbeats - with Erica Casier's sweet vocals rising above Central's deep and hazy backing track. Casier's wonderful vocal is given even more prominence on the deliciously horizontal Ambient Mix. Flip the record over for the real standout highlight: a bubbly, punchy, breezy and bass-heavy Club Mix from DJ Sports that recasts the track as a slipped, two-step garage shuffler full of rich sub-bass and ear-pleasing organ stabs.

Review: DJ Qu - AKA New York-based producer Ramon LIsandro Quezada - has been doing his thing since the mid-2000s, delivering spacey deep house cuts that join the dots between the soulful warmth of Glenn Underground and the far-sighted futurism of Detroit techno. There's more stargazing fare to be found on his latest EP. "Raw 7" has a real sci-fi feel, with alien synths melodies and outer-space stabs riding a powerful, cymbal-driven rhythm. "Untitled (High Life)" is a little more relaxed, with picturesque electronic melodies complimenting a dense, afro-influenced house groove. It's floor-friendly enough, but positive enough for home listening, too. Finally, "Soma" is thrillingly deep, transporting listeners to the far reaches of the galaxy via endless chords and shuffling percussion.

Review: By his own prolific standards, veteran deep house/techno producer Ramon Lisandro Quezada - better known since 2005 as DJ Qu - has been rather quiet of late. Having released just one single in 2014, he returns in early 2015 with one of his strongest EPs for some time. Several bases are covered on the Redtones EP. Contrast, for example, the drifting, sci-fi chords and dense, deep house goes tribal rhythms of the title track, with the picturesque pianos and crackly samples of downtempo bonus "Sadness In The Static". Best of all, though, is "Sweaty", a formidably wonky fusion of psychedelic electronics, trippy effects and throbbing, grime encrusted house beats.

Review: Brooklyn imprint Atypical Dopeness has previously given us homegrown talents Vick Lavender, Dawn Tillmann and Joe Claussell recently and now serve up some fresh talent on their label roster and it's sounding pretty hot. On the A side Eqwel & Ze's "Static Perc" is some pretty sinister dark house with some exotic steel drums supported by some violent tribal chants and minimal electronics; you've got to hear this one! "Runnin' From Your Love (Reprise)" by Teenage Music is even darker with its snarling sub bass and gloomy DX7 pads over a restrained groove; loved this one too. The main version on the flip has vocals and is more restrained. On the flip "Chellywood" by Russian Anton Neotnas (WAXXX) gets more uplifting than the other side but still mysterious enough with its soulful pads and deep groove making this one seriously emotive tune. Tip!

Review: You have to admire Laurent Garnier's continued desire to push boundaries and confound critics. His plan to devote 2014 to releasing five EPs on five different labels, whilst mixing up the styles, is undoubtedly bold. This three-tracker for the ever-intriguing 50Weapons imprint is particularly impressive. "MILF" bristles with stuttering analogue rhythms, foreboding chords and attractive bleep melodies, coming on like an unlikely jam session between Sweet Exorcist and Orbital. "DSK" sees the French veteran moving further towards his techno roots, while "He" sounds like an homage to darkwave with techno overtones and more than a hint of stripped-back early Chicago acid. Bravo Monsieur Garnier, bravo!

Maintaining the melting pot feel of the debut, once again it's a slightly scuffed, left-sided lo-fi affair from the unpredictable newcomer. "Bricks" is a no nonsense jacker you could easily imagine Derrick Carter burying deep in a three track mix, "Dreampiece" works things out in the wooziest, sense-blurring way possible while "Pimp Slap" ramps up the jazz and breaks up the beats before "Nodachi" closes on a beautifully drummed out dream note.

We are not sure what Rune Reilly Kolsch was on when he was in the studio making "Papageno" but we sure would like some, as the production is bugged out to the extreme! Detuned synths and malfunctioning electronics collide magnificently with manipulated basslines and stripped back percussion before Kolsch introduces a most pleasant detour into a more melodic plane blessed by fluttering vocals from When Saints Go Machine's Waa Industry. On the flip, Kolsch teams up with pianist Gregor Schwellenbach for the sublime "Cassiopeia" which surely ranks as one of Kompakt's most affecting B Sides of recent memory.

Much like that album, and Kolsch's music in general, these two tracks are stirring exercises in joyous melodies, wide-eyed synths and thrusting beats and will have the requisite effect when deployed at the right moment on the dancefloor. As epic as lead track "Derdiedas" is in full flight, it's the shimmering vocal harmonies and chiming melodies of B side track "Two Birds" that really stand out.

  2. Asusu - "Too Much Time Has Passed" (Dresvn remix)
Review: So far the Livity Sound Remix project has thrown up some interesting, and eminently danceable results (with the Pangaea and Beneath efforts our current favourites) and given that between them, Pev, Asusu and Kowton released almost 20 original Livity Sound productions, this still leaves a healthy dose of material open to reinterpretation. This latest edition sees the Livity crew open their back catalogue to two of Germany's most compelling production units in Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup and the Dresvn pairing of Dynamo Dreesen and SVN and the results will resonate with anyone with a keen interest in the odder strands of house and techno. Leipzig's finest take on Kowton's 909 growler "More Games" under their KM/MM guise and deftly retain the original's horror core grime strings whilst slowing the pace to their own murky tempo. It's complemented well by the modular bleep-filled take on Asusu's "Too Much Time Has Passed" from Dresvn which will make complete sense for anyone that pays close attention to their respective Acido and SUED labels.

  2. The Session 2 (Lord Of The Isles remix)
Review: Mule Musiq muster Johannes Brecht and Lord Of The Isles to remix the The Session 2 by the Japanese label's treasured double act Kuniyuki & Henrik Schwarz. Brecht delivers a minimal and acoustic remix - pan pipes included - for his version, while impressive Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles follows up a release on the Shevshenko label with a inspiring and synthy remake to an original filled with tinges of jazz and forest ambience.
