Review: Bristol outfit the Allergies has enjoyed a hugely successful year so far, releasing a string of killer funk and soul sevens on Jalepeno Records. Astonishingly, "Entitled To That" could be their biggest single yet. Certainly, the title track is superb; a revivalist Northern Soul style stomper full of hazy horns, fuzzy guitars, sweaty drums and the kind of strong, empowered vocal that recalls some of soul music's greatest female singers. Wisely, there's a slightly more laidback feel about flipside "Get Down on You", where crunchy Clavinet lines wrap themselves around a snappy funk breakbeat. It's a fine tune, of course, but pales in comparison to the killer A-side. Regardless, this should be an essential purchase for funk DJs.

Review: Destination '77: Nigerian troupe The Apostles lay down their third album Banko Woman. And, with it, this widescreen vibe excursion that's been a go-to for Afrobeat diggers since it was released on Love Day 40 years ago. "Banko Woman" is a firing, energetic funk jam layered with vibrant levels of instrumentation that gradually strip back at points to let you feel the raw tempo of the groove. "Faith Luck & Music" is at once both more bluesy, thanks to the sliding, melting guitars, and spiritual, thanks to the traditional rhythm and chords. A rare and long-awaited reissue.

Review: Like many producers whose careers began during the "post dubstep" era, Adam "Arkist" Gazia has spent much of his career sidestepping easy categorization. Even so, few would have expected his latest EP - the brilliantly titled Astrocat - to be a colourful, synth-heavy homage to the P-Funk era. Opener "Small Talk", featuring Mr Woodnote rocking the talkbox, is so authentic-sounding that it could be a long lost Funkadelic recording. The same could be said of "Astrocat", whose fuzzy synths, talkbox vocals and stuttering machine drums would make Roger Troutman purr. Also worth a mention are the slap bass-propelled boogie funk of "Only" and "Nightflare", a sweet chunk of laidback, instrumental electrofunk. Appleblim's bonus remix of the latter - dubby, intergalactic, spacey and melodious, is also superb.

Review: Banana Hill is a London-based party helmed by Cervo, and it's built a sterling reputation for embracing all manner of global grooves. Now the party is spreading its wings by starting a record label that kicks off in fine style with the sound of multi-instrumentalist Majid Bakkas, a Moroccan musician with many strings to his bow. Both tracks on this 12" have been given a delicate shove in the direction of the dancefloor thanks to Cervo, who pitches his kicks and claps just right to make for utterly natural sounding party fodder of the highest order.

  1. Elle Et Moi (vocal version) (7:32)
  2. Elle Et Moi (instrumental version) (7:28)
Review: Although he released a couple of albums and a smattering of singles during a ten-year career, Max Berlin is arguably only remembered for sleazy 1987 single "Elle et Moi". The track has long been considered something of a left-of-centre anthem amongst DJs who dig Italo-era European disco. This timely reissue pairs the now well-known vocal version - where Berlin does his best Serge Gainsbourg impression over bubbly synths, eyes-closed guitar solos, bongo-heavy percussion and post-disco orchestration - with the lesser-known instrumental take. This is effectively a DJ-friendly Dub; the influence of dub reggae productions can be heard in Berlin's use of delay-laden harmonica lines amongst the twinkling Rhodes keys, bumped-up beats and sweeping synth chords.

  3. Sortez, Les Filles! (Kay Suzuki remix) (6:26)
Review: This belated second 12" on Beauty & The Beat (the label's debut landed in 2015) comes courtesy of crate-digging DJ/producer Atemi and a revolving cast list of guest musicians. Opener "My People" - an "ode to friendship" according to the sleeve notes - sets the tone, with Atemi lacing African vocals over a gentle, bongo-laden beat, sun-kissed keys and woozy flutes. It's impeccable sunshine music, all told. The fluid collective opts for a different approach on the rather epic "Bamba Diounalene", a loose, soft touch dancefloor workout full of distinctive guitars, chanted vocals and post Afrobeat grooves. Japanese producer-in-London Kay Suzuki makes his presence felt on the flip, brilliantly wrapping a rolling, tribal drum groove in dreamy chords and spacey electronics.

  1. Melvin Bliss - "Syntheic Substitution" (extended Break edit) (3:50)
  2. Sweet Daddy Floyd - "I Just Can't Help Myself" (extended Break edit) (4:17)
Review: This tasty, DJ-friendly 7" single boasts two extended, break-heavy reworks of obscure and in-demand soul workouts. On the A-side you'll find a tasty extension of Melvin Bliss's superb, piano-heavy 1983 cut "Synthetic Substitution". While Bliss's brilliant original - all heartfelt vocals, jaunty keys and warm bass - is largely kept in tact, the mystery re-editor naturally makes more of the opening breakbeat, which was sampled several times during hip-hop's "golden era". Flip for a similarly tasty rearrangement of Sweet Daddy Floyd's 1978 Blaxploitation style disco-funk shuffler "I Just Can't Help Myself", a cut rich in rolling breaks, densely layered percussion, punchy orchestration and "Shaft"-style guitar licks.

Review: Immaculate street soul that more than lives up to its name, "So Cool" swoons and cruises on a loose wavey synth groove laced with lazy horns and a stumbling set of kicks. An authentic 80s boogie homage with warm echoes of Amp Fiddler-style sincerity, it's got summer stamped all over it. Liquid Beat affiliate Buscrates flips in a warm-as-toast version that has boogie stamped all over it. Balmy class.

Review: Bullerengue is a tradition that originated in the Caribbean region of Colombia. It is through the drums, chants, and dances that knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation. It is also a lifestyle: a way to celebrate festivities and the African legacy in Colombia. Bulla en el Barrio was born in New York City as a way to continue a learning process that started back in Baranquilla, Colombia. It culminated with the arrival of lead singer Carolina Oliveros to the city in 2013, and her connection with a tight-knit group of local Colombian musicians. They began to fill parks and other public places with the sounds of their home country to a small audience. The tradition of El Bullrengue is at the core of Bulla's process, and in the case of these recordings, you will hear two examples ("Fandango"/"Chalupa") of the three different rhythmic structures that make up the sound. From the beginning of Bulla, the group has since transformed into a community of over 12 active members who all share a strong sense of connection to their roots - and a consciousness of their ancestors.

Review: Repress! Excellent sounding pressing of an impossibly rare LP track, that has never sounded as clear or dynamic as this version. Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, New York City, in 1982 and pressed only for the congregation, Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording) acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Avenue. Rock & Soul shop were he worked. This was the place where most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados picked up on this new sound, and it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic, championed by Larry Levan, David Mancuso and others.

Review: Chaos In The CBD have quietly been building an impressive reputation for some time, with releases on Hot Haus, Amadeus and Needwant all hitting the spot. Here they transfer to Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International with what's arguably their most mature and musically expansive EP to date. There's a decidedly dusty, eyes-closed deep house feel throughout, with hypnotic grooves laden with all manner of neat, often jazz inspired touches. This is perhaps most obvious on the St Germain style jazz-house goodness of "Observe" - all skipping cymbals, bouncy grooves and killer pianos - but can also be found on the deeper "Observe". It's there, too, on the lilting brilliance of "Midnight In Peckham" - think yearning trumpets and twinkling piano motifs - and the blissful "Luxury Motivation".

As with their previous workouts on the likes of Austin Boogie Crew and Superjock, the emphasis is on full cream 80s synth boogie/disco funk and teaming up with the most distinctive vocalists possible; Natalia & E warm up the dance with a little deep house provocation, B Bravo drapes herself over the fattest bassline of the Ep, Love Child brings the purple feels to the hip-flaring "I Let Go" while Jackie Rain brings us back to earth with R&B sensuality on "Livin It Up". Game over.

Review: Athens of the North founder Euan Fryer has described Willie Dale's "Let Your Light Shine" as "one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years". Only five copies of the original 7" single have surfaced to date, with the most recent changing hands for eye-watering sums of money. You can see why Fryer was so excited by "Let Your Light Shine": while rooted in both funk and soul, the track also draws heavily on psychedelic rock and the fuzzy, funk-rock fusion brilliance of Sly Stone. Original B-side "Somebody Help Me" is an altogether more laidback affair, with Dale offering impassioned and melancholic lyrics over a psychedelic era take on old rhythm & blues ballads.

Review: Yes Eglo! Alex Nut and crew turn to two elder statesmen of London beat science in Dego and Kaidi Tatham for a killer induction into the art of crafting 'broken beat bullets'. For those who don't possess the necessary knowledge, Dego is the most familiar handle of Dennis McFarlane, founding member of 4Hero and responsible for so much good music over the years, and Tatham has an equally important role in the whole Broken Beat movement, being an integral member of the Bugz In the Attic collective. The pair have worked together previously on numerous occasions and they are on top form here with lead track "Ankle Injury" demonstrating a perfect balance of melody and crafty rhythm. Imagine Theo and Floating Points collaborating and your heads in the right spot to enjoy this track and "Acting Up On That Shit Don't Count" which is the sort of music you could imagine RAMP to be making if they were on the rise today. Do check the sumptuous piano and Rhodes vibes on final cut "Carrots & Sesame"!!

"Someday" is a killer simmering slice of disco funk, while "On The Scene" slows things down and turns up the 70s bombast with Philly strings and brass blasts aplenty. "Freaksta" takes things in a more cosmic direction, while "Right Now" aims right for Studio 54 indebted flamboyance, all stirring diva vocals and bold production to get everyone freaking the right way.

Here we find their first ever a-side (which sells for triple figures on the regs) and it's backed with "Don't Ever Go", a big swooning, crooning bluesy ballad that's never been released before. Often bootlegged, never bettered, Dope brought every element popping and locking into the future. Not reissued since its release three years ago, Dope's label Kay Dee have sneaked out 150 of each 45".
