Dave Lee's Essentials Sampler
Cat: ZEDD 12372. Rel: 04 Dec 23
Jamiroquai - "Little L" (Dave Lee Re-Blend) (8:14)
Shelia & B Devotion - "Spacer" (Dave Lee Disco Fantasy mix) (9:00)
Review: Long time house and disco devotee Dave Lee comes through on Z Records once more with a sampler from this years ZR Essentials collection. It features two of his masterful reworks starting with Jamiroquai's 'Little L'. He flips into a funked up cosmic delight with plenty of the original's synth flourishes melodic hooks and orchestration all present and correct but with added slap bass, replayed rhodes and beefy new drums which make this a surefire dancefloor winner pretty much anywhere. On the flip comes Dave Lee's Disco Fantasy mix of Shelia & B Devotion's 1979 hit 'Spacer' which has a more retro disco sound thanks to the masterful original work of Chic. Additional clav, new string parts and solo-ing keys give 'Spacer' the extended DJ mix it never had at the time of original release.

Bam Bam Tom Tom Club (2:42)
Reggae For Roy (3:07)
Review: King Most is a revered American edit and remix master who is back with yet another big vinyl drop. This one is the first on his own new KM label and has already, we're told, been getting some high-profile plays from the likes of A-Trak. The A-side pairs off two epic classics - 'Bam Bam Tom Tom Club' has that languid, ass-wiggling groove you know and love with a twisted reggae vocal to make for something brilliantly original. The B, meanwhile, is a vinyl-only exclusive packed with Jamaican sunshine. 'Reggae For Roy' is perfectly organic and horizontal with its new reggae beat delivered under a classic Roy Ayers vocal.

Review: FF45 welcomes Smoove back for his third edits release, and this one surely won't disappoint: The Pharcyde reign over a beefed-up JB break - what's not to like? - while an instrumental and some bonus bits for DJs abound on the flip, making for a more measured listen in contrast to the more vocally immediate, on-the-beat A.

Scruscru & Los Protos - "Primavera" (3:47)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: You know that long hot days are fast approaching when it is Brazilian music that you crave. Thankfully the Scruniversal has got us covered with a second release that is as scorching as the first. It pairs MPB, samba and Latin flair with hard-edged hip-hop and funk stylings across a pair of tunes from Scruscru, each one a different collaboration. The first is alongside Tony Lavrutz and has gorgeous vocals and organic percussion paired with cut-up beats and jazzy keys that will ignite any floor on 'Rave Du Brazil.' It is Los Protos's jazz funk groover 'Primavera' that gets the good vibes going on the flip.

Review: Ff45 (Friday's Funky 45) welcome Canada's finest Jim Sharp back to the fore with two 7"-ready sure-shots, of the remix/reinterpretation/covers variety. On the A, we hear a flip of J-Lo's pop classic 'Get Right' but reconstructed to dazzling effect, with every part rerecorded impeccably and placed into a fresh breaks-funk context. The B, meanwhile, reinterprets the Armand Van Helden/Common hip-disco-house classic, 'Full Moon'.

Review: The Dust Donuts crew return with a reissue of another delicious 7"s of perfectly aged funk and hip hop sounds. Canadian-born, London-based DJ Jim Sharp was at the controls for this third volume and first up his edits 'Rubber Band.' It has big woodblock hits and brash horn leads with a percolating rhythm that rises and falls in dramatic and emotive fashion. The flip is an edit of a classic hip hop Joint, 'The Light', with the aching original vocal left in place next to lush piano chords and dusty golden era beats.

Don't Wait For The Doctor (7:52)
Review: The Gallery series of edits and reworks has already dropped some killer cuts, though we're no nearer discovering the identities of the 'unknown artists' behind the imprint and its fine collection of re-appropriated disco workouts. On 'Don't Wait For The Doctor', a single-sided affair, they dip their toes into the sometimes murky world of the mash-up/bootleg remix. Of course, it's a tasteful and well-crafted affair, with our mysterious heroes combining a gently tweaked, effects-laden instrumental re-edit of First Choice Salsoul classic 'Doctor Love', with vocals borrowed from another Larry Levan favourite, NYC Peech Boys' proto-house classic 'Don't Make Me Wait'. The nods to the Paradise Garage legend don't stop there, either, with the infamous laughter sample associated with his DJ sets and remixes making an appearance from time to time too.

Review: Andres, or DJ Dez, is a beat-maker extraordinaire. His Cuban heritage and background as a hip-hop DJ for Slum Village mean that he comes at house music from a slightly different perspective than most. Couple that with a vast record collection and next-level ear for samples and he rarely turns out a dud tune. Enter Address V, his latest album on Moodymann's Mahogany label and another masterful one that straddles moods and grooves with effortless ease and rare style. There are crisp house kickers like 'Cybermate,' heavyweight funk beatdowns like 'Funky 2Step' and slouchy and low-slung joints like 'Detoxfromtheworld' amongst dirty hip-hop jams and so much more. Another timeless album from a Motor City great.

Come Around & Love Me (3:04)
What Is Left To Do (3:56)
Review: Jalen Ngonda shares two 7"-incarnated selections from his debut album Come Around and Love Me. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. His voice, equal parts raw feeling and elegance, exudes confidence and charm - disarming packed rooms of rowdy concert-goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. For his studio project, however, Ngonda and his team at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn developed skulful blends, heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with a Motown sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. Ngonda creates a classic approach that is rooted in the sounds of revered pioneers, without falling into imitation; most symptomatic of this is the beautiful cinematic soul echoer 'What Is Left To Do', a song sure to dazzle for years to come.

Review: The Alloy Cuts label is back with another sweet 45rpm that collides some of the greats of hip-hop past into two new fusion and mash-up jams designed to do plenty of damage to dancefloors. First up is Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul with 'Divided Conformelution' which has some sick low ends and booming kicks overlaid with funky guitar riffs and hard bars. Review: Funkyjaws Music launches a new edits series here with four absolute dons of the form on one vital 12". It's Lay Far that kicks off with 'Never Ever Edit' which is all horn-led excitement and upbeat disco claps and kicks before Admin's 'Moon Trippin' takes a more slow and soulful approach. When it comes to edits few are more essential than Chicago's Rahaan who kicks off the B-side with 'Gonna Get Ya', a leggy funk number infused with cosmic synth rays and warm piano chords. Delfonic shuts down with the loose percussive jumbles and jazzy vibes of 'Let's Dance The Spank'. A fine start to the series with volume two already in the works.

Coming full circle, we hear Sharp team back up with fellow producer Double A here; on the A we've got the latter's 'Iko (Never Felt This Way)', a fearless cross-section of big beat, Latin funk and sampled West African refrains, while Sharp helms up the B-side this time around, with a full-horseshoe'd rerub of an (ashamedly on our part) unknown funk delight.

Any self-respecting music head is well familiar with the Most Excellent Unlimited series from Mr K aka Danny Krivit by now, and the latest entry into it is another doozy on 45rpm. 'Candela' opens up with a lung-busting and intoxicating vocal over organic drums while 'Chevere Africa' has a warm Afro feel to its upbeat and celebratory disco beats complete with big horns. Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. Review: The debut album from soul, pop and r&b singer-songwriter Teddy Swims, I've Tried Everything But Therapy, is a knowing exercise in pop humour, and an inverted critique of the 21st-Century celebrity condition. Manifesting as a concept first and foremost, Swims stated in an interview that he would put himself "into therapy" only after the album came out, and would until then continue to indulge every other soul-allaying vice - "buying myself a couple more months of freedom, of being a traumatised little s***" - building extensively on the "men will do anything but go to therapy" Internet meme. Even so, the album is a collection of healing songs, dealing with complex issues from substance abuse to tumultuous breakups and is a compelling one at that.

Once again it is a head turning mix of disco and funk that carries on where his superb Concrete Funk album from 2021 left off. These are beefy cuts with authentic grooves, starting with the loose limbed playfulness of 'Shake It'. There is a more heavy, purposeful chug to 'Follow Me' which comes alive with lush strings and perfect soul vocals. It is inspired by his own heroes Miles Davis and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and takes cues from his worldly travels while on tour, which he says - and clearly have - helped to deepen his understanding of rhythm. The likes of Chronixx, Tom Misch, Shabaka Hutchings, Nathaniel Cross, Theon Cross and the Chineke! Orchestra, amongst many others all feature to add further quality to this essential record.

Stranger Things Theme (3:22)
Halloween Theme (2:41)
Review: They're best known for covering hip-hop classics in their unique, funk band plus steel pans vibe, but Germany's Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band show there are spookier arrows in their quiver when the time of year demands it. Two special halloween themed cover versions grace this 7", the first a rendition of the theme from TV show of the moment 'Stranger Things', the second their version of the title theme from the film 'Halloween', originally penned by the master soundtrack maker himself John Carpenter. Both have a slightly cheeky, quirky and rather joyful atmosphere, tending more towards the cute rather than the spooky side of all hallows, but don't let their lack of scariness put you off, they're both delightful.010920

Rakim - "It's Been A Long Time" (4:00)
Cecil Holmes - "Call Me, Come Back Home" (3:23)
Review: More gold from the always in the know and on point 5 Boroughs label. Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. These plays shift in quick time so do not snooze if you want a slice.

You're In Love (Kon remix) (4:27)
You're In Love (Kon dub) (4:27)
Review: Second time around for Kon's fabulous re-rubs of Twilight's slept-on 1986 disco-boogie gem 'You're In Love', which first dropped on seven-inch almost a decade ago. Vinyl copies of the 45 are hard to come by, so this Ubiquity Records re-issue is most welcome. Kon's takes stick closely to the original - these are multi-track tweaks, rather than revolutionary remixes - while subtly beefing up the groove and highlighting the band's weighty synth bassline. On the A-side you'll find the full vocal take - all sweet vocals, crispy disco drums, colourful synths and clipped, Chic style guitar licks - while the flip-side 'Dub' is a marginally more minimalist, groove-focused affair, with delay-laden vocal snippets and swirling instrumental textures echoing across the sound space.

I Believe In Miracles (instrumental) (3:51)
Review: Back in 2010 composer and Latin jazz specialist Claudio Passavanti put together a scaled-down ensemble of Latin musicians and percussionists to record a salsa cover version of the Jackson Sisters disco classic "I Believe In Miracles". The seven-inch single was a riproaring success, with jazz and Afro-Latin DJs around the world turning it into a bona fide scene anthem. Happily, Passavanti has decided to reissue it on red vinyl to celebrate the track's tenth birthday. It's a superb cover all told and, somewhat surprisingly, "I Believe In Miracles" actually works really well as a Salsa record. Full of fiery horns, sing-along, Boogaloo style vocals and infectious percussion, we actually prefer it to the over-played Jackson Sisters take. Recommended!

Devotion (4:04)
Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

Review: Dal Platinum is back once again like a reneged master. His last outings on the fantastic Breakbeat Paradise Recordings came in the form of a remix and a huge Powerhour free download and now he comes correct on a new 7". He kicks off by bringing some crashing breakbeats and funky drumming to a hip-hop classic on 'Breath & Strut', while the melodies are full of soul. On the reverse is a much sunnier sound - 'Peace Dust' is driven by a big bassline with some nice organ stabs and a fiery vocal leading the vibes up top.

Two tracks of soulful jazz fusion, coming as a homage to the legendary Joe McPhee, appear on this 7": 'Shakey Jake' and 'Night Dream'. Both flaunt Moriya's interpretive talents, as he breathes fresh life into McPhee's ultra-energetic original number, all while proffering his own original cut on the B-side too.

Review: In the field of spiritual jazz, there are few albums as seminal as Pharoah. Originally released in 1977 and serving as a landmark for the genre as well as Pharoah Sanders himself, it remains a towering work of understated beauty, using negative space and patient pauses as potent as the notes played. Sanders sadly passed on to the next realm in 2022 amidst a wave of renewed appreciation for his work, and Luaka Bop have taken on the task of reissuing this otherworldly classic in fine style. As well as the original album, a second record features two previously unreleased live versions of 'Harvest Time', and the package comes with a 24-page booklet featuring a wealth of additional material to round out the experience of one of the all-time greatest jazz albums.

Review: We hold our hands up, we don't know anything about Cheeba's Prestige Allstars and cannot find much out either. Echo Chamber Recordings though have got them on this limited 7" and the music is a steamy mix of Afro and Latin funk that comes in two different versions. 'Dig This!' (vocal version) is a raw cut with plenty of hard-edge drums and James Brown samples that liven it up next to some big sax energy. On the back side is the instrumental which is only slightly paired back and still has lots of James Brown mic work.

They were part of an exciting and emerging scene that fused funk, soul, jazz and more and their catalogue continues to get plenty of attention even now, decades on. Backatcha last served up their Visions EP back in February and now they look to their This Is Your Woman 12" which opens with the title track complete with its brilliant female vocals and low-key funky disco beats. There is also the high-speed and super cool grooves of 'I'll Never Give You Up' which fans of Freez will love, then a couple of dubs and instrumentals on the flip.

Review: Nuremberg's Jayl Funk is a true torch-bearer for the art of funked up breaks to start a party anywhere and everywhere. He's back on Danish label Breakbeat Paradise with another sure-shot 7" of feel-good vocal grooves that should appeal to a huge spectrum of cats ready to get down, not least the A-side joint 'Shake & Boogie' with its infectiously sunny demeanour. 'Not Today' is a more disco-styled affair with snappy Philly string stabs and a slippery groove you could just sink your teeth into. Just watch out for that epic piano breakdown, it might just raise the roof off the joint.

Review: Coming to Trad Vibe, French music production duo Boar & The Badlibs impress us to no end with their 7" singles, of which their latest 'Bossa Nova Rico Suave' now becomes a part. The track is a clean nuevo-bossa-nova exercise, underlaid by a pumping backbeat making it equally as worthy of an eclectic hip-hop or downtempo mix. We're sure the nominal pun on 'Madlib' isn't without its inspirations. The King Most remix on the flip side is just as neat, drawing on samba while pinning down a bustlingly percussive groove.

Review: Kyle Hall makes another entry into the already fine discography of his Forget The Clock label with another fine four tracker. His usual raw style pervades from the off with the well swung drums and bumping kicks of the title track soon to get you in the groove. His signature diffuse synth work is what brings warmth and soul to the dusty drums of 'Track 2' while 'Sarabi' ups the pace with a more hurried groove and pent up sense of party joy. A second bonus track closes proceedings, with 'Track 4' layering up low slung drums and meandering cosmic leads to heady effect.

Coming to 7” vinyl and housed in a striking blue variation of their new graphic house bag, ‘Don’t Forget About Love’ finds one of the finest British soul singers of her generation in outstanding voice on a gentle, uplifting song written by Dee with Mike McEvoy and Ernest McKone, intended as an antidote to the hate and negativity of lockdown. ‘Be There In The Morning’ was originally co-written and recorded by Australian soul singer Renée Geyer; reminded of the song by Acid Jazz’s Eddie Piller, Dee was enthusiastic to record her own version and delivers a euphoric vocal on another impressive return to form.

Review: Bill Curtis' Fatback Band is known around the world for its soul and disco hits but their roots actually lay in funk. They were one of the most impressive outfits around in that particular genre and so they have, for those who are willing to dig deep enough, plenty of rare funk gems to call upon from their earliest days. Here we get a couple of them with 'Dance Girl' - the last tune they released in 1974 before signing to Event/Spring. It was a real classic at block parties back in the day and on the flip is a tune that will cost you over L1000 if you can find an original, namely 'Keep On Brother Keep On' - the group's second single on Curtis BC Projects II label.
