  1. I Go Boom
  2. Button Moon
  3. Oversize Clip
  4. Melody Maker
Review: More body slamming material here from Addison Groove. Direct dancefloor business, the title track "I Go Boom" shakes and sasses with a tight dancehall stomp that's balanced beautifully with soft minor keys in a way that DJ Gregory might have done back in the day (only a lot heavier). "Button Moon" takes the heaviness level up several notches with more steppy beats and a fine acid house flavour. "Oversize Clip", meanwhile, nods to the dubstep heads with a deep and minimal 808 riddim. "Melody Maker" finishes the show on a deeper note. Timeless, jacking and sweetened with a sexy groove, Addison Groove can do no wrong right now.

  1. Standard Affair (4:48)
  2. Legion Of Boom (3:55)
  3. Morro (dub) (4:26)
  4. Dr Know (4:55)
Review: Addison Groove is always a great reminder that's it's not always DJ Rashad (RIP) and RP Boo that you need to look up for footwork. Hooking up with DJ Die on his Gutterfunk label the two chalk up four bangers, though some melodic moments are there to be found on B2 cut "Dr Know" which at some points almost sounds like a friendly throw back to classic DJ Marky. "Standard Affair" is frenetic but punctuated by snare-heavy break downs and 808 percussive bleeps. Indiana Jones referencing "Legion Of Boom" ups the tempo and funk with the most liquid cut on the EP while undoubtedly the biggest, baddest production here is the cut up vocals, spastic percussion, gun clacks and deep Rhodes of "Morro".

  1. DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn - "Tshetsha Boys"
  2. RP Boo - "Shangaan Electro"
Review: If there's any form of Western dance music that even comes close to the frenetic pace of South Africa's Shangaan scene, then it's the Chicago juke and footwork scene, making Honest Jon's decision to enlist juke producers DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn and RP Boo for their latest instalment in their ongoing Shangaan Electro remix project so inspired. Rashad & Spinn's remix of the Tshetsha Boys takes a deep 303 bassline and frenetic hi-hats and combines them with the original vocals looped endlessly, with a dystopian synth melody. RP Boo's remix meanwhile is more threadbare, with loose rhythms that sound like they're about to spin out of control; but it's his decision to combine militant western spoken word with the African vocal samples that proves inspired, highlighting the common blood running through both genres.

Review: New Berlin beat explorers Through These Eyes continue to forage into new spaces with exciting new talents. This time we're treated to tones from NYC/Vancouver deepsmiths Folding City who proceed to take us into their darkest depths and most uplifting heights. "On Point" is an acidic slow jam that stomps with grunt and weight you'd expect to hear in a dBridge set. "Museling" continues the halftime-ish beat fusion but with hazy R&B vocal textures and lilting guitars that give just enough sparkle and sense of restrained hope. Understated, heavy and different; There's a lot going on right here.

Review: Brighton-based DJ and producer Ital Tek seems to divide his productions evenly between Planet Mu and Civil Music these days. After first appearing on the latter label with the suitably complex rhythmics of Hyper Real in early 2013, Alan Myson returns with a second forward thinking offering for Civil in the shape of Mega City Industry. As the title suggests, the four tracks here seem to be a continuation of last year's mini LP Control for Planet Mu in both Utopian theme and sound. Expect an intricate cross pollination of footwork and the hardcore tropes of '90s jungle, something that is displayed with dizzying results on "Shinra".

Review: Detroitian beatsmith, Platinum Pied Piper and Tiny Hearts founder Waajeed flips from Jeedo to Jeedeci for this unique slice of space-aged hip-hop. Fusing elements of juke, trap, techno and classic 90s R&B to great effect, both versions carefully balance the stark out-there beats with the soft harmonies and rich chords of the R&B sample. Fans of anything that's been delivered on DJ Shadow's Liquid Amber will be all over this.

  4. Jessy Lanza - "Fuck Diamond" (Bambounou remix) (7:05)
Review: Last seen lining the Freestyle antics of Morgan Geist's latest project The Galleria on the excellent Calling Card 12" on Environ, Jessy Lanza returns to Hyperdub for a record that pairs her up with the Teklife crew. A superb vocalist, Lanza excels when matched with the rolling snares, crisp kicks and thick bass provided by DJ Spinn and Taso resulting in "You Never Show Your Love" sounding every bit like a modern R&B classic. It's accompanied by a Teklife remix which retains the mood whilst adding some Footwork flex into the mixer (the late DJ Rashad was involved in the production of this too). To close out the record, Hyperdub have slipped in Bambounou's excellent drum heavy remix of Lanza's "F*ck Diamond" which originally featured on one of the label's anniversary compilations last year.

Review: Machinedrum heralds his next album on new home Ninja Tune with the Eyesdontlie single, introducing the Vapor City concept the producer said was inspired by a recurring dream . Fans of his stellar 2011 album Room(s) will be glad to hear his signature sound incorporating footwork and more experimental elements is still intact, though the lead track here seems steeped in dreamier textures. The B-side track "Body Touch" however is a different beast, harking back to his earlier hip hop-inspired productions. An excellent single that bodes well for the album...

  4. Sideswipe - "Be With U"
Review: The London-based Modern Ruin Records label arrives with a mission statement to showcase some of the most talented and innovative artists making moves on the juke and footwork scenes around the world, and the label's first EP gets things off to an incredibly strong start. Pawn kicks off with "Do U", a dancefloor destroyer melding footwork textures with punishing D&B-influenced rhythms and bass, while The Renegades' "The Warmup" offers a jazzier number which places deft amen breaks throughout. On the flip, Sideswipe's "Be With U" offers a gospel-influenced, funky take on footwork with its vintage sample, but it's Vorres' "One Of These Old Days" that takes the crown, with delicate 808 rhythms fluttering across more soulful vocals. Essential stuff from a label to watch.

Review: Pritchard's contemporary jungle joint has been on heavy rotation since the festival season, and it's not hard to see why. Jumping and jittering around 20th Century Steel Band's 'everyone's got to make a living' sample, it screams at the past, present and future in equal measure. Elsewhere he conjures up the ghosts of LFO on "Fabulous Fred", we get all frenetic and footwork on "Jack" while "Natty" brings us full circle with a subversive amen-heavy jungle basher. Some of us work in an office to make a living. Some of us drive a van. Mark Pritchard, however, makes seriously next level sounds.

Review: Beware of the Naine Rouge! A Detroit folklore tale that contextualizes the city's spates of bad luck dating back over 300 years, local machine-abuser Sinistarr pays homage to the unique myth with a set of unclassifiable dancefloor smoulder sessions. Two major league tag-teams hit from the off as techno don Stingray313 pairs up for the loopy kickdrum stamping "Track 1" and ghettotech godfather DJ Nasty joins him for a furious footwork fire up "Shake". Elsewhere we get speak & spellbound on the dark stepper "Nonlinear Threats" and "I Pop, I Jit" shakes and stutters with such a rhythmic infectiousness you don't want it to ever end. Another perfect Exit release.

Review: Machinedrum steps up to Big Dada to deliver four highly physical twists on Aussie Enchufada affiliates SK Simeon and Yaw Faso: fusing footwork, dancehall, Afro beats and classic ragga jungle, each cut slams in such a gully way they make Major Lazer look like the president of the My Little Pony fanclub. Highlights include the neat countering of emotional vocal soul and machinegun drum bullying on "Memories" and the insane drum rolls on "Ram Dancehall". There's a reason this has been pressed to heavyweight vinyl. Bad it up.

Review: Skubi steps into the limelight with his debut release for Modern Ruin, an imprint reserved strictly for the finest in footwork killers. "Brain Music" is basically a modern hip-hop lick with cavernous low-ends and that familiar juke vocal stutter. The same goes for "Wet", a relatively darker, dreamier sort of affair. Remixes comes from none other than Slick Shoota and House Of Black Lanterns, the former opting for a jungle swing while the latter twists and funks that juke into an even nuttier bundle of drums and percussion. Large.

Review: SLV comprises Shanghai producer Downstate and Tokyo-based Hamacide. While the title of their debut release "Dagger" suggests sharp, cut-throat riddims, there's a much softer, richer sound amidst their slo-mo trappisms. Think Bassnectar's early material. Think Moby. Think beautiful. For something much sharper head to Desto's remix. Upping the tempo with footwork fury, it's the perfect foil to the title's dreamy dedication.

Review: It's time, once again, to bun the system and go feral for a spell as Etch & Bulu's imprint returns with another far-out bass/beat communique. Toyc's "Kicks" really does what the title promises with this rising bass tone that wouldn't have sounded amiss on a Plasticman record 20 years ago. Remix-wise Deft removes the tech traces and adds a whole cavern of alienating, creeped out tones. Itoa cooks on more of a jungle heat but cleverly buries the beats beneath layers of rhythmic elements and a ghostly chord sequence in the background. Etch dusts of his harp and jumpiest kicks for ultimate honours. Not to be bunned.

This time he takes the footwork formula and twists it inside out in a way only he knows how: "Driftin" soothes with jazzy chords and velvet vocals from Zoel Violet, "Fever" is all about the dense physical drum arrangements while "Hipbounce" is a sonic sandstorm of soca and occasional UKG bass belches. Unique as always.

Obey artist Shepard Fairey provides the retina-searing artwork for Open Your Eyes and the music within leaves as much, if not more, of a lasting impression on the senses. Alongside contributions from fellow Teklife artists MoonDoctor, DJ Manny, Taso and DJ Taye, perhaps the most surprising individual involved in Open Your Eyes is Oneohtrix Point Never, aka Daniel Lopatin, who features on three of the album's tracks as well as being credited on mixing duties. After the celebration of DJ Rashad's legacy that launched Teklife, this second release sees the collective's position at the forefront of the footwork movement further reaffirmed.

Review: With his stock as a producer ever rising since footwork veritably invaded the wider electronic music world, DJ Rashad serves up another potent brew of high tempo sample daggering for Hyperdub after choice LPs for the likes of Lit City Trax and Ghettophiles in the past. There's a smooth quality to many of the tracks on offer here as Rashad gets ever more intimate with synthesis in his tracks, the tender chords on a track such as "Only One" softening out the edges of the rapid fire vocal triggering. It's not all sweetness and light, with the title track whipping up a nod to the raw nastiness of old Dance Mania with its farting bassline in the lead in to the track. Either way, across fourteen tracks you get a real feel for where one of the leading lights of the footwork scene is at.

Review: This debut release from footwork crew Teklife's label sees them pay tribute to DJ Rashad, the late, great innovator who passed away in the spring of 2014. Afterlife gathers together a collection of DJ Rashad tracks co-produced by Rashad's close friends and associates, including DJ Spinn, Traxman, DJ Manny and more. As the label themselves state, this 14 track album really conveys the wealth of musical influences and knowledge Rashad possessed with soul, hip-hop, house, techno and many more all brought together at 160 BPM. "Afterlife is our tribute to our friend and our inspiration. Rest In Peace DJ Rashad," Teklife write. Enough said. A must for all fans of Rashad.

Review: Brighton-based synth-step explorer Alan Myson is nothing if not prolific; Nebula Dance is his third full-length in five years. Like previous excursions, Nebula Dance sees him attempting to join the dots between dubstep rhythms, synth-wave melodies, clattering IDM grooves and the shimmering sweeps of classic electronica. It's a sound dripping with positivity, and the result is an album that somehow manages to sound both self-consciously grandiose and impressively intimate. Tracks like "Intercruise" and "Glokk" bristle with retina-sharp melodies and glistening electronics, all atop rhythms that are seemingly pulling you in different directions. It's a delicious combination, that's for sure.

Review: Wow, this is quite some album from Planet Mu! You may not be so familiar with Jlin, a footwork producer with a couple of contributions to the second Bangs & Works compilation Planet Mu released, but the Indiana based artist is quite the talent on the basis of Dark Energy. Jlin has gone on record to say this album has been in gestation from some time and explores darker themes than you would usually get on a footwork album. There's a real confidence to her productions at times on this album, "Black Diamond" in particular has a wonderful swagger to its syncopation, and in "Expand" Jlin offers an intriguing collaboration with RVNG Intl's resident voice manipulator Holly Herndon.

Review: Kode 9 makes a much awaited return to his own Hyperdub stable with a new album, and that is exactly what we were wanting to hear from the one of the founding fathers of contemporary UK bass music. His explorative style is perfectly suited to the album format, and "Zero Point Energy" is the perfect opener to a stunning sequence of events - large folds of bass deconstruct over sci-fi sonics and sink into the pensive melodic flux of tunes like "Notel", and "Void". There is also plenty of beat-laden material here, so don't worry, and "Holo" even ventures into a bit of jump-up juke, but there's no point trying to dissect Kode 9's music; the album is all made up of hybrid tunes, and it's exactly the sort of music that pushes boundaries further and genres to their very edges. Quality, of course.

Review: In the three years since the release of his last full-length as Machinedrum, Vapor City, Travis Stewart seems to have done some soul-searching. Whereas that set was a punchy and occasionally punishing mixture of juke, D&B, and UK garage sounds, Human Energy looks towards new age sounds and ideas for inspiration. Of course, Stewart hasn't completely abandoned skittish rhythms and bass music influences, it's just that these come wrapped in cheery, off-kilter synthesizer melodies, sparkling electronic flourishes, and repeated nods towards ambient, R&B and experimental synth-pop. As a result, it's a hugely entertaining and imaginative set, with just enough club-ready fodder to keep DJs happy.

Review: Shake It Maschine and Mr Pigman's Simpig project comes correct with their debut full-length release Strangers. A fusion of future beats, trap, jungle, footwork and even trance, there's a great sense of the cosmic throughout as synths and snapped, shaken and bend backwards over robust drum patterns. Highlights include the carnivalian arpeggios and otherworldly instrumentation of the title track, the dungeon trap trippiness of "Genetics and the jazz-flickered, Stray-like stepper "Breeze". With a body of work this strong Simpig shouldn't be strangers for very long.

Review: After his first album marked a decisive step forward for footwork as a music form, Traxman is back with a second volume that builds on those successes with even more exotic sound sources that reach far beyond the ghetto house roots of footwork and juke. Opener "Time Slip" is a fine case in point with its complex spread of jazz samples that take on a truly sci-fi level of exploration in the hyper tempos of their host track. The lineage of black music weighs in heavy on Da Mind Of Traxman 2 as every track lives and breathes its roots and influences, sometimes brazenly, but always imaginatively, as has always been the case with footwork. For a deeper exploration of where the Chicago-birthed sound can head in the future, look no further.
