Review: If you've stumbled upon Polo & Pan for the first time here then consider this blurb a gateway to an entire musical realm that has been getting built since the middle of last decade. Well, maybe even longer. The French electronic artists have already achieved big things in their homeland and beyond, and by that we mean certified platinum sales internationally for debut album Caravelle. This is the follow-up and it's every bit the grand voyage.

The duo's videos speak volumes about where the tunes themselves are at. Think very colourful, visually captivating cartoon worlds, editing either set to unapologetically up front beats or allowing the more laidback rhythms to unfold like narratives. It's certainly danceable, but we're talking pop odyssey not disco fodder for this one, and wouldn't want it any other way.

Review: Preston, UK-based Polypores (AKA Stephen James Buckley) is a great advertisement for just how fertile the North West England electronic music production scene is outside of Manchester, the region's sonic epicentre. Self-describing as "painting" sounds with synthesisers, suffice to say his a deep and patient aural world to step into, and one that reflects the rugged serenity of the region's stunning countryside. Multizonal Mindscramble is a case in point. With track titles like 'The Dream Incubator' and 'Machine Elves', it's clear these are computer sounds but made resolutely human through earthly and heavenly elements, gliding refrains, bubbling flourishes, and a vast, open feeling to arrangements. Naturally evolving, ebbing, and flowing, rather than being trapped in the regimented, hard-fixed loops and patterns that can often define output from musicians and their digital audio workstations.

Review: The enigmatic Pom Pom appears for the first time outside of their eponymous imprint to deliver this ever curious collection of tracks for A-Ton: the offshoot of Berlin's Ostgut Ton for archive, ambient and art-related releases. There have been many rumours as to who may be behind the music, but they've done a pretty good job of keeping under wraps all this time - we must say. Much like moments in their extensive back catalogue, it's a fairly diverse affair covering everything from ambient ("Untitled 6 & 13"), bass music reductions ("Untitled 7"), early '80s style synth-punk ("Untitled 10") and even a bit of classic bleep techno as heard on "Untitled 12".

Review: This 40th anniversary reissue of The Pop Group's seminal Y Live album is a timely reminder of what a game changer it was. Hugely inventive and original upon initial release in 1979, it is still an alarming and arresting record of experimental noise. Manic vocal samples, caustic guitars, detuned synths and dishevelled drums make it a tribal and dystopian fusion of unease and terror. It includes tracks recorded in New York, Manchester and Brussels and all re-cut to half speed vinyl, with a special 12" including "She Is Beyond Good & Evil" and "3'38" as well as a special poster.

Review: Mercury Prize-nominated Portico Quartet are masters of fusing jazz, electronics and downtempo sounds and have been for several years, not least on their 2017 album Art In The Age Of Automation. The same label that put out to then - Mathew Halsall's Gondwana Records - is now reissuing it on limited edition clear vinyl. The album is richly immersive and steeped in ambient beauty and minimalist charm, with plenty of ethereal melodies and cinematic soundscapes that stretch out wide all around you. The detail is densely packed in and the richness of the sound really elevates this album into something quite spectacular.

Review: Since he first emerged on Diagonal a decade ago, Powell has been associated with abstract rhythms, hard-edged electronics, modular madness and fearsome experimentation. Piano Music 1-7, then, is something of a departure: a set that's as equally as inspired by piano jazz and neo-classical musical movements as fractured electronica and the Radiophonic Workshop. Of course, this is not piano music in the Nils Frahm sense - much of the actual piano motifs are delivered on lo-fi keyboards and synthesizers, while his fluid, attractive and ultra-melodic refrains come wrapped in studio effects and occasional electronic textures. A great example of this hybrid sound is 'Piano Music 4' - all alien electronics, woozy piano riffs and unsettling experimental intent, while the raw beauty of shimmering ambient number 'Piano Music 7' is simply sublime.

Review: Peter Power invites listeners deep into his unique world of rich soundscapes and potent grooves, hypnotic vocals and glitchy beats topped with fine melodies on his new album New Dance Energy. The innovative downtempo talent has a truly global musical perspective and finds inspiration in "organic motion and the alchemical forces of nature." He plays many instruments on the record and for this first dancefloor orientated sound in five years he also brings ecstatic dance forms and the spirit of cacao dance ceremonies to his work.

Review: Sam Prekop and John McEntire made their debut as a collaborative partnership on Thrill Jockey with this album. Sons Of came on CD and limited, long since sold out cassette in 2022 and now it arrives on wax as a double LP that also includes the bonus cut 'A Drink At The Banquet.' Their experimental sound is a nimble mix of supple synth work an involving beats. Texture and timbre plays heavily across each freeform cut as moods build and grooves grow. There are rueful, far sighted star-gazers like 'Ascending By Night' and more lush dancers such as 'A Yellow Robe" (part 1)'.

Review: Pretty Sneaky is an anonymous project about which nobody knows much of anything at all, though it has become synonymous with an image of a banana peel logo and self-released white label 12" EPs. We get more here, this time on Marionette. Marseille's Norman Levy aka Koldd has been enlisted as a collaborator on this one (the third time this has happened following his work on a couple of previous tunes) and it is a seductive mix of soothing sounds, laid-back atmospherics and gentle bird calls. This is slow-motion music for meditative periods of reflection and we love it.

Review: Prince Istari's earliest memories are of his mother playing the tranquil melodies of Erik Satie's pieces on the piano. Skipping school, he'd bask in the sun, absorbed by the serene tunes and years later in 2024, rediscovering his mother's sheet music sparked a creative resurgence. He transformed them into dub versions, crafting a tapestry of sound, and each piece's form dictated its direction, evolving from heavy dub to delicate piano and synthesiser blends. The finale, a relic from his past as Istari Lasterfahrer, features a distorted recording of his mother playing Satie to complete the circle. This special record comes in limited quantities of just 200 copies.

Review: Norwegian disco titan Prins Thomas returns to his regular stomping ground of Smalltown Supersound with this, his sixth solo studio album. Thomas is sounding as vibrant as ever, his musical ideas spilling forth in glorious arrangements of organic instrumentation and gentling bubbling electronics that melt into a mellow, groovy sonic realm. There are hazy, cosmic moments to be savoured on the likes of "Feel The Love", and more adventurous rhythmic trysts like the nagging, snaking percussive melee of "Ambitions". Thomas' studio proficiency is more than matched by his imagination and creative ambition - would you expect any less from such a titan of Scandinavian electronic music?

Review: Formed by Genesis P-Orridge and (not Sir) Alex Fergusson when the legendary Throbbing Gristle split, Psychic TV recorded a great many live shows and one-take recordings, Those Who Do Not being one of them. This ultimately gargantuan 10-track LP is packed with ritual tropes, prog inflections and drone-noise dirges, and carefully interweaves audio recordings from the infamous marriage of Genesis and Paula P-Orridge into its textures. Recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1983, it sounds as doomy and hellfiric as ever, not to mention this being the most honest recollection of the original show.

Review: Mat Handley's shimmeringly beautiful Cotswold Stone was first released in 2019, and this reissue from Castles In Space reminds us of this: this is an album driven by warm analogue sounds, effortlessly conveying a feeling of being somewhere beautiful, out in the country. The project presents a meditation on the passing of time and the persistence of memory, and is in part a reflective work of familial dedication and reverence. The narrative is one that takes the listener on a journey through the rolling hillsides of England. The record is given extra dimensions and texture through the deployment of woodwind instruments at various points, which add a real sense of pastoral energy to the work. Picking out highlights is always a tricky task when a record is so conceptually strong and consistently rewarding. 'In The Marsh' beautifully juxtaposes reverbed and spectral piano with bright synth arpeggios and distant woodblock percussion, whilst its glorious counterpoint, 'On The Heath', is as inquisitive and enigmatic as the first hare of spring. 'The Green Leaves Of Shilden Hall' are verdant and lush, propelled by some lovely flute and clarinet accompaniment adding an ivy-covered gentility to proceedings. 'In The Grove' with its spectral saxophone evokes images of solemn hillside sunsets and spiritual reflections on past lives.

Review: Belgian singer and producer Bolis Pupul releases his first solo debut album 'Letter to Yu' following his smash success with fellow DEEWEE artist Charlotte Adigery 'Topical Dancer', a satirical, yet hard-hitting, exploration of spirituality, racism and identity that the two experienced in Ghent as children of immigrant families. If you're a fan of the production of songs like 'Mantra', then this project is for you. Still keeping the witty elements from 'Topical Dancer' the LP, a reference to a great emperor of Chinese history, 'Completely Half' opens up with Pupuls hallmark 80s synthpop style, partnered with the typically Belgian cerebral approach to music and allusions to his mixed-race heritage. Pupul's beats feel pensive, yet danceable and the more deep-in-thought cuts like 'Goodnight Mr Yi' benefit from they dynamic contrast with more in-your-face cuts like the blaring 'Kowloon' and its siren-like supersaws.

Review: Analogue synth spooks rejoice, Pye Corner Audio is back with further explorations of the sweet spot between nostalgic fuzz and circuit-borne futurism. Ghost Box is a spiritual home for Martin Jenkins' flagship project, and he continues to edge out the scope of the Pye Corner sound without derailing the fundamental atmosphere. On The Endless Echo, warm, pulsing melodics set to eerie keys abound, and there's a fine balance between gorgeous ambient atmospheric pieces and sinewy, danceable rhythms, but Jenkins manages to sound fresh and inspired even while reliably holding true to the overall project aesthetic.

Review: Back in 2016, Martin Jenkins unveiled the first instalment of a "loose trilogy" of vaguely conceptual albums for the Ghost Box label. Entangled Routes is the third and final part of this trilogy and lands two years after its predecessor, Hollow Earth. Though not expressly acknowledged within the music, Jenkins' inspiration this time round was apparently "mycorrhizal networks" - subterranean networks of funghi that transfer water, carbon and other minerals and nutrients to the roots of plants. Musically, what's on offer is intoxicating and far-sighted, with Jenkins mixing up trippy ambient psychedelia with modular-rich, melodious electronica, throbbing, arpeggio-driven dancefloor cuts and what would once have been called IDM. As usual, the album is full of great ideas, beautifully executed, and sequenced in such a way as to provide a genuine aural journey.

Review: Martin Jenkins aka Pye Corner Audio has been a busy man. He ended a fine trio of albums last year with Entangled Routes, then dropped a live album on this label early in the year, and now quickly follows it up with yet another fine long player. Ride guitarist Andy Bell plays on five of the tunes and is a collection that comes heated by plenty of sun and coloured with bright acid psychedelics. Says the man himself, "I try to tailor my work slightly differently for the various labels that I work with, and this seems to fit nicely with Sonic Cathedral's ethos." He has sure done that.
