Review: Doug Smith and Richard Payton aka 95 North are a house music production duo from Washington DC. They are well known for their 90's discography which was full of hits on the likes of Strictly Rhythm, King Street Sounds and Slip 'N Slide, including collaborations with Crystal Waters and Sabrynaah Pope. "Let Yourself Go' was originally released in 1995 and probably one of the best moments of their activity in the house music scene. The jacking and swing fuelled vocal house of "Let Yourself Go" (Penn Ave mix) is a real zeitgeist of stateside house music of the mid noughties. Equally memorable were the dark and tribal drums of "Capitol mix" (reminiscent of classic Cevin Fisher) or the deeper and sexier garage vibe of the "Georgetown mix".

Review: The legendary Phil Asher (yes, he of Restless Soul fame) is a DJ, producer and an integral figure in London's dance music community over the last 20 years. He returns for the first time since 2015's Time & Space EP on Rekids, with a bit of help from buddy Dwala for UK based moreaboutmusic: who've released some fine grooves of late by the likes of Mike Dunn and Deep Space Orchestra. A side cut "Sparkle" (AJ's Dance) is a glorious serving of Detroit style hi-tech soul, reminiscent of "Jupiter Jazz" era Underground Resistance with its emotive and euphoric spaciness. On the flip is "Today's Tomorrow" which really brings the funk on this deep joint that's straight off of the mothership. Check it out!

Review: Los Angeleno AshTreJinkins is up next for London/Tokyo joint venture NCS, who as some of you may know by now: only release in very limited runs: so get in quick! Named after the famed American soft drink that tastes like mouthwash, the Root Beer EP features four servings of lo-fi house which will certainly fit in with the status quo currently set by the likes of Lobster Theremin, E-Beamz et al. The tough and driving vintage techno of "Dead Or Wounded" kicks off the EP in good from, while "Frozen" with its hypnotic chord progression and jagged rhythm patterns create a unique groove that really gets off the grid. Finally, the tribal house tool "Adware Nigga" calls to mind Canadian Hayden Andre Brown's seminal jams from the early '90s, but backed by some L.I.E.S. style analogue techno grunt.

Review: Since announcing their debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune earlier this year, Irish duo Bicep present the first single from the album in the form of title track "Aura". Said to have been created via a series of accidents while experimenting with a new studio setup, the track finally came together through trial and error and here is the wonderful result. A dark and sexy serving of dancefloor drama featuring 'hands in the air' style vintage synth melodies, life affirming strings and immaculate drum programming. It is sure to be one of 'those' tracks you're going to be hearing a lot of in the latter part of 2017 and beyond.

  3. Locate Yourself
Review: Ian Blevins has been busy making a name for himself on ESP Institute and Futureboogie, but now he comes to Not An Animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. "The Birds" is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there's some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. Man Power then step up with a "Tropical Bastard" remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. "Locate Yourself" on the flip finds Blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it's a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he's known for.

Review: Blind Box heads Julien Sandre and Konstress know a thing or two about deep, undulating house grooves, and their continued exploration of immersive cuts for hidden corners of the dance yields further delights on this sixth instalment in the Blind Box series. The first side of this 12" finds the two label bosses twisting out immaculate jams shot through with playful sound design. "Would" locks into a subtle swing and revels in lopsided synth stabs, while "Hedone" plunges into a stunning intricate techno landscape peppered with glitchy tones. On the flip, Julian Alexander follows suit with the crisp, funky "Baku Man" and the more experimental tones of "Casserole".

Review: Entering the fray earlier this year on Australian imprint 3BS, New Zealander Borrowed Cassettes flies across to Germany to release on Max Graef, Glenn Astro and Delfonic's ever-delectable Money Sex stable. Four cuts in all, each one driving with a deep tracky nature but the perfect balance of leftfield approach; the dusty foggy keys on "100,00", the swung percussion and otherworldly textures on "Miles", the jazzy dynamics and Detroitian insistency of "Bongo" and the stuttering technoid lunar excursion "Cue Ball" all maintain Money Sex's reputation for experimentation that still kicks ass on the floor.

Review: Since going solo last year, former Onra collaborator Byron Blaylock has yet to put a foot wrong. Each successive 12" has brought with it a swathe of killer new jams straddling the blurred lines between soul, jazz, hip-hop, deep house and jazz-funk. There's more of the same on Leaving This Planet, the Alabama-raised producer's first EP for the mighty Eglo. So while opener "Song for a Friend" is a superior, jazz-flecked deep house bumper smothered in killer electric piano solos, the track that follows, "Mind, Body & Soul" is a squelchy tech-jazz masterpiece. It's the same story on the flip, as floor-friendly jazz-breaks ("Blow Your Mind") make way for a heady trip into intergalactic jazz-funk territory ("SSDP"). As the worn-out old saying goes, this is "all killer, no filler".

Living up to its title immaculately Future Retro is a space-aged soul trip from established and breaking talents alike. Irish veteran Derek Carr takes us back to early UR joints with his body-moving analogue groove, Rob Belleville continues where he left us on Ante and Ibiza Boys with rippling filtered synths, newcomer Mihail P gets down to the 808 nitty gritty with a bouncing ball acid funk breaker while Erell Ranson closes the show on a hazy, dream-like weave of melting synths. Review: D'Marc Cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. Now he comes to Altered Moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener "Always On My Mind". There's space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of "Blanket Statement" demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. "Mozaic" is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while "SteamFunk" revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. Plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

Review: Four years after the beginning of Heist Recordings, label heads Detroit Swindle deliver their fourth solo record for the label. On the Can't Hold It EP, they showcase their love for lush disco, analogue basslines and leftfield musicians. On the A side, the title track is a serving of funky disco loops that you've come to expect from the Dutch duo, while "Just Not Norma" features New Zealand nu-jazz hero Mark De Clive-Lowe: who adds some wicked P-funk vibes to this deep and dusty deep house excursion. On the flip, "Tamarindus Hollandicus" is the most energetic offering from the pair here, with its bouncy bass, neon-lit synths and tight rhythm patterns taking you into the stratosphere. But the remix up next; where they bring in NYC native Willie Burns is a remix that shows you their darkest side yet.

Review: This man's output is anything but boring this year. Previously spotted on E-Beamz and Shall Not Fade he now joins the party at Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms. Once again it's straight to the floor jacking business with no care for unnecessary polish. "Different Dates" is pounding and acidic, "Lonely Valentine" chugs with a dreamier, swooning feel while "I Know You Want To" flexes some superb vocal sample artistry. Remix-wise Baltra adds a little acid silkier synths to the mix with sexy results. Say yeah.

Prayers mainstay DJ F is first to the plate with "Dukha", a warm but spacious chunk of rolling, dub-tinged deepness. Deep house polished with class and driven by weighty production; every dispatch has been gold so far. Including this return to Distant Hawaii; "Metcha" makes itself known with strange percussive slurs and woozy chords while "Rue De Saintonge" and "I Want To Be There" strut and twinkly with an illustrious deep 4/4. Still neck deep in the research, still highly esoteric, he takes us where he left us in 2015 with his last single for the Strawberry Fields label with three delicious slices of evocative, feel-heavy classical house music. "M&P" shimmers with early progressive elements that twinkle like Twilo, "4Const" hits with a softer piano-stroked foreground but much more driven beat dynamic while "Alpha 2" brings us back into the future with a cosmic funk odyssey. Knock out material, as always.

Review: Aus alumni Rob Glassett brings his Fold feels to Shall Not Fade: four tracks of jazz-tinged classically trained house music that nods heavily towards the Chicago sound. "Alan Whickers" pumps with a big filtered sensation that doubles up into quite a punch on the second drop, "Knickerbocker Ave" is as tasty as it sounds with a light broken feel to the drums and delicate jazz piano loop while "Doin' Bits" is grounded in more of a NYC house feel with its insistent vocal sample rises and relentless groove. Need a little 23rd century soul? Look no further than Will & Ink's Frits Wentink remix. Vibes.

In keeping with the imprint's desire to "fill your bags with the strangest pingers", Spirit Animal is arguably the producer's most interesting and diverse release to date. While the deep and woozy vibe of his deep house productions is evident throughout, this is variously blended with tropical dub disco (low-slung opener "Captain's Patilla"), the sticky, feverish pulse of Ghanaian percussion (Afro-house shuffler "Dance Bebey") and, on standout closer "Silk", both Idjut Boys style late night dubbiness and swirling, off-kilter sample-house.

Review: Having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent Udacha label, Russian duo Gamayun now take their talents to Hesperian Sound Division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. "Golden Ratio" leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets Gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. "Ascension" takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. "Untitled" has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while "Uvolnenie" edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

Review: Cong Burn is a new label that features a range of producers plying a more interesting twist on the standard deep house formula. Take opening case in point Haddon, who uses oodles of processing to create a slippery, shifting tripper out of "Not Coming To The Club" and instantly stepping aside from the run of the mill milieu. Howes then pops up with the snaking, ultra-deep electro abstractions of "Untitled". L Pearson is in a particularly cheeky mood with the scratchy micro-sampling fun of "PSR1170", calling to mind the crafty chops of Paradroid et al, and then Perfume Advert book end the release with some beautifully horizontal deep house for the subliminally minded to revel in.

Review: Given the clear West London broken beat and hazy jazz-funk influences that marked out his superb 2015 album From Joy, it's perhaps unsurprising that Kyle Hall's latest seven-inch missive explores similar sonic territory. While the standout is arguably the impeccable downtempo shuffler "DSP (Dear Sweet Potato)" - all gently tumbling synth lines, stoned drum machine hits (in a slipped jazz time signature, of course) and sun-kissed chord progressions - it's undoubtedly A-side "Teacher Plant" that will get all the props. Shot through with the fireside warmth and groovy vibes of deep house, but built around dexterous broken beats and Kaidi Tatham style keys-work, it's one of the producer's most well-rounded and effective releases of recent times.

All we know is that Harrison is making some incredible sounds right now and has been since he emerged two years ago on Gents & Dandy's. Now taking the honour of launching the brand new quinoa-powered Artisan imprint, he delivers two more warm, analogue workouts. "It's Foggy Outside" lives up to the subdued-but-cosy imagery the title conjures; soft, contemplative but driven with a real strut. "Almond" takes the strut to even funkier pastures with a cool click-n-pop rhythm and synths that refuse to stop building. Complete with an incredible canonical loopy Roberto S remix, Artisan have hurled themselves at the map with creativity and chaos. Pay attention.

The soul and raw, off-kilter production style runs in the family, and "Keep Holdin On" demonstrates this perfectly with its immediate warmth and unfussy arrangement. "Gimme That Love" is the real gem on this record though, toying with a rubbery bassline and a touch more atmospheric detail that makes Howards voice shine. That said, if you do require an instrumental version for any reason, the alternative cut stands proud on its own. For our money though, we'd say Howard's vocals are what makes this record special.

  4. Let's Move (Goshawk Raptor remix)
Review: Pressed For Time reaches its tenth release with the skillful tones of Russian maestro Mihail A. Popov in his I Gemin guise. The original tracks on this 12" show off Popov's musicality, with "It's About Trust" in particular revelling in fuzzy synth tones and laid back beats that place focus on jazzy keys and chord progressions. "Let's Move" keeps things equally slow and sexy, with a particularly rubbery bassline flirting with sampled brass and shiny chords. YSE leads the charge in terms of remixes, bringing a tightly wound garage swing to "It's About Trust" while Goshawk's "Raptor Remix" of "Let's Move" heads into a classic deep house terrain for the smooth groovers.

Review: Italy's Ivan Iacobucci, part of the same generation of house producers such as Claudio Coccoluto, Ralf and Marco Trani, has been smashing it since the early 90s. Admittedly, he did have a slight hiatus between 2003 and 2010, but has since come back with material that's just as strong as his original output for labels like UMM, Nite Grooves and King Street. He's since moved to Berlin and it's only natural that he's been asked to drop an LP for the Imprints label, onto which he storms through like some sort of demigod. The sweet thing about Taboos is that it's the sort of house that meanders onto many different playing fields, coming up through minimal gusts of melodies, and back down with curious, electro-ridden grooves. There are more traditional 4/4 pumpers like "Housebreakers" in here, and even bursts of loose Detroit-style techno such as on "Taboos Molecula", but the sounds are very much his own, and we hope that this is the start of a long and fruitful new chapter of the man's career. Big up, Ivan!

Review: The hand-stamped train just keeps on trucking with Italojohnson, who offers up another three righteous slabs of hardware goodness for the fist-shakers out there. "Track 1" spreads itself over the A side with a tight and punchy rhythm section that gets off set by a gloriously bubbling set of sound effects, managing to be both utterly useful and pleasantly unhinged in the same bar. On the flip side "Track 2" moves with a more neatly trimmed old-skool jack, sleek and refined without sounding over-polished. "Track 3" slows things down for a dirty ride through slimy basslines and heavy cowbell abuse.

Review: Semi mysterious crew Italojohnson return for a seventh round of limited vinyl only action and it's hard not to get immediately caught up in the tough Kenny Dope style DJ tool of the A Side hugger. There's just something about the drums that come kicking in that grabs your attention amidst the current deluge of cookie cutter deepness, and the eventual drop into the bassline is sublime. Switch down to 33 on the flip and the first of two more untitled cuts is equally unabashed in its intentions as a DJ tool, pairing crisp hi hats with thick bass drums and fidgeting stabs whilst the second cut begins in a swampier place and highlights Italojohnson's capacity to tease out a vocal sample.

  3. Give Me A Reason (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) (9:42)
Review: After Australian band Jagwar Mar released their album entitled Every Now & Then in 2016, they now appear with an accompanying remix release for their fans. Under the direction of mastermind Jono Mar, the album was created after three years of intense worldwide touring, supporting such bands as The XX, Foals and Tame Impala. It fulfilled all the expectations of their 2013 debut Howlin'. "Ordinary" (Rebolledo Very Ordinary cut) is far from the description: this one's a great shuffling little number, with no shortage of laser zaps. "Give Me A Reason" (Michael Mayer Does The Amoeba remix) is without a doubt the real winner on here, where the Kompakt main man serves up another sublime and emotive exercise in life affirming dancefloor drama. On the flip, "Give Me A Reason" (Weatherall Meets Jonnie Two Heaters Uptown - part 1) sees the UK dance veteran deliver a lo-slung and definitely slo-mo take on acid-indie dance, as best as you'd expect from the man.

Review: Following his "Late Night Sessions" earlier this year Detroit's Brian Garrett returns to Trouble Kids with another generous helping of straight up strutting house music. From the full-frontal jacks of "Ounce Is" and the divine vocal-looping "Say Summin'" we slip into something more boompty and comfortable on "Aquarius Swing" and tantalise our senses of "Life Of Love" before shedding more layers until we're writhing in otherworldly groove nudity on the re-shuffle. "Same Feelings" closes on a juicy Jersey garage warm organ vibe. Feeling it?

Review: By the time he released debut album Bump Talkin' in 1995, Paul Johnson was already an established figure on the Chicago house scene. He'd already released all manner of bumpin', forthright fare on such legendary labels as Cajual, Dance Mania and Djax-Up Beats, leading UK label Peacefrog to offer him an album deal. While many of his early singles were undeniably slamming, Bump Talkin' was an altogether more musically rich affair, with Johnson offering up a selection of warm, rich, jazz-flecked deep house cuts that have stood the test of time superbly. This vinyl reissue - the first since the original album release - emphatically proves the timeless nature of the music. Relatively few copies are available so don't hang around if you want to snag one.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Juniper, the Manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on Underground Quality and the like. Having previously popped up on a various artists 12", they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an EP that presents their subversive style immaculately. "Indigo Children" is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo Motor City style electro and techno with industrial tones, while "Life Source Negative" switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. Every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

Review: Lumberjacks In Hell just keep on trucking, this time calling upon the legendary skills of Karizma in setting their latest A side alight. "Work It Out" is a fiery slice of gospel choppery, whipping up a fevered line in vocal insistence that hardly needs a rhythm section to make you move, but still has the necessary goods underneath the hood. Marcel Vogel follows a similar tact on "I Got Jesus", spacing the jam out and working a bit more groove, but certainly tapping into the same spiritually enhanced vein. Karizma then returns to make an aptly named "Stomp Dub" of the track, rounding off an absolute beast of a party record.
