Review: Spotted on his "Pagoda" 12", Zagreb nu disco OG refixes our focus and adds a new lease of life to its velvet keys, warm, measured funk aesthetic and occasional cowbell tickles. Each remix adds a new chapter; Pete Herbert brings a different twist and bigger sweeps to the synths, A Vision Of Panorama Balearic the Dickens out of things with loose legged gliding synths and slo-mo sunset finish while Greene Linez closes the show on a sweet and slinky two-step flex. Something for every occasion. Tip!

Review: This awesome piece of early 90's New Jersey garage still works today. The first release on Madhouse Records which was produced by Kerri Chandler and featuring the raw vocals of James 'Dreamer G' Gordon. This classic bears all the hallmarks of the legendary producer's trademark sound. As the label themselves said best "fans of 'proper house music will be all over this, whether long time followers of the man like Kerri or new to the game - Either way, this is some essential reissue business!" This is the first in a series of official Madhouse/Kerri Chandler reissues for 2017. Every title has been remastered by Chandler himself, from all original sources and each reissue has been legitimately released in full conjunction with Kerri and Madhouse records.

Review: Donnie Tempo has donned many different guises over the years, but his most notable releases have surfaced on Larry Heard's Alleviated Records and other respected outposts such as Moreaboutmusic. Now he steps up to Chicago label Perpetual Rhythms with some dazzling deep house confections that take their cue from the likes of Glenn Underground but then inject some star-gazing Detroit techno motifs into the mix for a truly soul-stirring end result. Both classically funky and future-minded in its execution, this is the kind of record that can turn heads without trying too hard to be different.

Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

The Reason (12")
Cat: SOL 9. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. The Reason (7:05)
  2. Ancestors Fun (7:03)
Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

  4. Message 045 (3:32)
Review: Simbad Stanislas has enjoyed a fine start to 2017, with copies of his first outing on Funkineven's Apron label simply flying off the shelves. Here he transfers to Lo Recordings to deliver another collection of eccentric, off-kilter, hard-to-pin-down dancefloor treats. Stanislas' stock-in-trade is combining dusty, MPC-powered house rhythms with quirky, left-of-centre sounds. This fusion can be heard loud and clear on "Ping Pong Love", where a soulful vocal sample is combining with weirdo electronics and thrusting analogue noises, and amongst the intergalactic synths, bubbly electronics and bizarre spoken word samples of ambient closer "Message 045". There's a slightly breezier, break-of-dawn feel to the overwhelmingly loved-up World Air Hybird Remix of "Ping Pong Love", while "Backstreet" is a jolly, jammed-out chunk of loose-limbed deep house positivity.

Review: Casey Tucker has been synonymous with Boe's sister label For Those That Knoe, making a shining example of the imprint's mission to unearth music from long-serving, overlooked talents in the field of Detroit-flavoured house and techno. On this third installment, Tucker's distinctive style positively leaps out of the speakers. "Carpet Dancer" is a ragged yet effervescent twist of plush techno melodics and spirited beat manipulation, while "Juxtaposition" maintains the sparkling synth work while bringing the drums in line. "Whatever Comes To Mind" is the deeper offering on the record, bringing balance to another fine missive from a hidden gem of an artist.

  3. Go Hmmm!? (8:48)
Review: Germany's Dana Ruh has been a consistent source of quality house and techno since her first recordings began to appear at the end of the noughties; the artist has offered new and compelling forms of the genres on a regular basis, and it's no surprise that she's earned spots on some of the most sought-after imprints like Ostgut Ton or Cocoon Recordings. Recently, however, she's decided to take things into her own hands thanks to the emergence of her own label, the aptly named Cave Recordings. "Things That" spearheads the Cave Jams EP with a lovely, full-bodied groove full of tribal spirit and improvisational drum sequences, while "Make You" takes a few lessons from early era NYC house thanks to some absolutely divine percussion work in the same vein as the great Romanthony. "Go Hmmm!?" is a proper live jam, all rough and raw, and ready for the true house heads to deploy onto the hungry underground masses.

Review: It was undoubtedly a big moment for Hudd Traxx when they got Chez Damier on board to lend his vocal tones to Eddie Leader and Tomson's "I Am With You" back in 2014. A few years on and Huddersfield's premier house label are revisiting the modern classic with a raft of top shelf remixers on hand. Iron Curtis brings a bubbling, piano-enriched lilt to the jam, while Bristolian duo Outboxx go for an understated slice of straight up deep house. Ekkohaus gets busy with chunky tech house concoction, and then Sakro smooths the mood out with some jazzy keys and a steady groove.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: Having already dazzled with her initial appearances on ESP Institute and Born Free, Japanese artist Moko Shibata continues to flourish as a producer with this utterly essential EP on Cocktail D'Amore. As with her previous releases, the mood is one of flamboyance and inventive melodies throughout, not least on the mutant disco celebration of "Heart". There is still some tougher fare to enjoy as well, with "Hole" proving to be particularly grubby, but overall there is a distinct sense that Shibata was reaching for a more disco influenced sound on this record, but it's far from your average slice of re-edited nonsense.

Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

Review: Nottingham based Ron Basejam is the anagrammed alter-ego of Crazy P co-founder James Baron who creates music with feelings on labels such as Futureboogie and Wolf Music and now for Freerange sister label Delusions Of Grandeur. On the fittingly titled The Sound Of A Feeling EP he serves up the charmingly titled "Shit Wizard" a soulful, nu-disco boogie-down jam. "We Walk To War" in its original form is the kind of lo-slung/slo-mo disco that really floats our boat, but the remix up next by Tee Mango really injects it with some Stevie Wonder style soul-funk that'll help get your shine on. The title track on the flip is the deepest and most emotive offering here, with its sublime and hypnotic qualities being pushed along by a tight groove.

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues apace with this new wedge of goodness from Logic Systems. The self-titled EP is the first we've heard of this particular producer, although it could just as easily be an alias for the boss himself. Whoever is behind the music, they should be thoroughly pleased with themselves. The quality and imagination that has been poured into these tracks is evident from the off - "Ariel" shimmers with its plush layers of synths and understated beat, while "S.C.A.M.P" gets some even more startling keys in the mix. The story is the same across the flipside, weaving a masterful tale that adds perfectly to the 89:Ghost canon.

Review: Amsterdam's Nachtbraker heads up Quartet Series which launched in 2016 and after four various artists EPs now presents its first solo artist 12" by local newcomer Scott Franka with The Gym EP. Starting out with the title track, which is a dubby and emotive exercise in deepness that has a classic, Larry heard style nostalgia about it, he also gives us "Toenail" which by comparison is much more rough and dusty but again utilising some really soulful pads and bumpy bass over its absolutely wicked drum patterns. On the flip things take a turn for the slightly more experimental on "Sorry" taking on the kind of UK sounds of Actress or the like, while "Street" goes for some electro style ghetto techniques.

Review: France's Varhat is back after some great tracks on Crocus and Aku but who can forget that killer edit of Stablo he did last year. This guy's is on a roll and one to watch, which says a lot considering the amount of talent coming of Paris at the moment. This time it's for Ukranian wunderkind Mulen's imprint and it's a as deep and as rolling as you'd expect. The whole EP is great as a whole but really shines on "Track 2 " with its pitched down acid bassline and those sweet immersive pads. "Track 3" is properly deep with its smooth bassline, tight rhythm and those swirling and hypnotic synths working a treat.

Review: Interplanetary Criminal, whoever they may be, seems perfectly suited to the sort of ironic, laissez faire attitude that spews out of the E-Beamz label. The imprint has gotten a name for releasing artists who, first and foremost, make stunning house music with a distinctively raw edge, but ones who also like to take the whole underground scene with a pinch of salt. DJ Boring, DJ Playstation and DJ Longdick have all appeared on the catalogue and, if we were one day to find out that they were actually all the same two or three artists, we wouldn't be surprised. Concerning the music, however, "Intergalactic Jack" churns its 4/4 beats through subtle jungle influences and aquatic bass tones, while "Work" takes a step deeper into the analogue aesthetic with some seriously crusty drums and sharp synth work - a beauty! "Destiny" opens the flip with a surprisingly UK kind of sound, reminding us of the best of the garage days, while "Shawty" unleashes a magnetic dose of old-school hip-hop sounds in the form of rough but effective vocal samples. Some true swing in here.

Now the duo are back with more goodies from their Studio OST project, and once again the fusion between gossamer threads of melody and delicately crafted machine rhythms is evident throughout this 12". "Eventide" comes as a full blown track and a sumptuous beatless version, while "Ascension" has a dubby original and useful drums-only cut, making this record both functional and an absolute delight to listen to.

Review: After making occasional appearances on compilation style EPs, deep house artist Demuja - AKA Salzburg-based producer Bernhard Weiss - finally made his solo vinyl debut last month. Here he delivers a speedy follow-up on Austrian imprint RTCT. There's naturally much to admire throughout, from the drowsy chords, classic vocal samples and punchy drum machine hits of "Feel Like Me", to the driving, Detroit techno influenced, acid-laden stomp of "Volt". Steve Urulu is on hand to provide a tasty remix of the latter track, toning down the techno influences in favour of a locked-in deep house groove, darting synth stabs and sparkling electronics.

Review: Naturally, the Mork labels swaps and borrows artists from its parent label, Lobster Theremin, but this shouldn't take away the fact that the imprint very much focusses on its own quality of techno. Unlike LT, Mork has a much darker, techno-laden approach to club music, and Royer seems like the perfect associate to make the jump into the shadows. "Classe2 (Simple Version)" opens the doors to a moody yet noticeably soulful assortment of pads and grainy house rhythms, which fall elegantly into the even more lo-fi landscapes of "D'orr22". On the flip, the latter tune receives a sun-kissed, 'Sunday Lit Refaax' version, adding yet more analogue mystique to the original cut, which leaves "Healyrslfw Lee" to take a trip down greener pastures, and what we like to call 'beach house' vibes. Lovely stuff.

From Portland's Losonofono, through to Soulfuric Trax and even Berlin techno merchants Kanzleramt and not to mention their own Solid Gold Records. The Minds Beneath Atlantis EP comes courtesy of Jerome Deradji's esteemed Still Music and starts off with the absolutely sexy deepness of "Shhh (Quiet)" (feat DOT) which will appeal to proper deep house nostalgists like us, likewise "U With Me" has that Detroit style that calls to mind other great producers like Big Strick or Andres. 3. Aussteiger - "Taperock" (6:25)
  4. Aussteiger - "Baracoa" (7:33)
Review: Berlin based house hero Shir Khan serves up another volume in his acclaimed Black Jukebox series and we're already up to volume seventeen which is mighty impressive! On this edition we have Martin Lewis, who despite his name is actually a German dude who has released on labels like Freebase, Holic Trax and his own Profound imprint: which he founded back in 2008. He looks after things groove-wise on the A side with the funky and lo-slung hip-hop inspired deepness (dopeness!) of "Lifted" while "Feel Good" is a nice and reliable slo-mo disco edit which might sound familiar to some of you. On the flip is self described 'medicine man with shamanic powers' Aussteiger with the tough, dusted down and absolutely rolling deep house jam "Taperock" which will appeal to fans of the Robsoul Recordings sound while "Baracoa" offers up more of the same and the hypnotic melody it has happening throughout is pure magic.

  3. Kiddmisha & Apoena - "Dancin"
  4. Jonno & Tommo - "Mystic Feelings"
Review: The latest offering on Owen Jay's Batti Batti label features a cast of characters doing different but equally excellent things within the realm of deep house. Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Kiddmisha & Apoena set light to the B-side with the restrained but utterly on-point depth charge "Dancin", and then Jonno & Tommo round the record out with the sultry "Mystic Feelings", making this a complete package of high grade house music from the heart.

  1. All Aboard (5:41)
  2. Night Train To Nowhere (6:09)
Review: Melbournian DJ/producer Bell Towers is one of Public Possession's most prolific artists. This 12" is his seventh for the Munich-based stable in just under four years. It's something of a celebratory, peak-time affair, with A-side "All Aboard" offering a near perfect balance of flanged, ear-catching disco guitars, elastic live bass, DJ-friendly special effects, and a house sensibility. "Night Train To Nowhere" is a more druggy and trippy affair, with Bell Towers channeling the spirit of kraut greats Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream on a cut that sits somewhere between Italo-disco, kosmiche, and quirky, left-of-centre house. In other words, it's another rock solid EP.

Review: When Kerri Chandler wrote the tracks that make up the Panic E.P way back in 1992, he was little more than an up-and-coming producer from East Orange, New Jersey. Much has changed in the quarter of a century since, but Panic remains one of the now legendary house producer's finest 12" singles. Check, for example, the snaking sax samples, thumping kick-drums and fluttering vocal samples of late night classic "Get Up", the bouncy New Jersey drums and undulating synth-bass of "Something Wrong" and the basement-bothering, disco-sampling wooziness of "Love Is Over". These are raw, stripped back house tracks from the top drawer that don't seem to have aged since the moment they first appeared in stores.

Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

Review: Parallel Dimensions was first released in 2000. Since then, this seminal LP has been reissued on numerous occasions, and it's easy to understand why. Much like the work of his Detroit compatriot, Moodymann, Parrish's early work helped to define the sound that we now refer to as 'Detroit house'. Through an intricate, soulful blend of the Motor City's infamous Motown funk sounds, Parallel Dimensions has been one of the albums to showcase a particular style of sampling, one which focusses on rhythmic concoctions and a palpable sense of the city's struggles. Don't get us wrong, this LP is very much playable on the dancefloor, but it can't possibly be reduced to being categorised as a 'dance' piece. Hip-hop, soul, funk and disco are important parts of the formula, and the house and techno nuances that do emanate from the tunes are strictly a filter for Parrish's more jazzy, musical tendencies. It's an album to get lost in, to enjoy in different scenarios, and one in which you'll find something new every time you approach it. Unmissable.
