  1. Soothe Me (6:17)
  2. Relaxin' At The Flip (6:07)
Review: This special one off collaboration sees young gun native Berliner prodigy Max Graef, coupled with globe trotter Fantastic Man aka Mic Newman. With Mic living in Max's broom cupboard for a few vodka soaked weeks in Berlin this autumn, there was a beautiful inevitability that some music would outcome. The lead track "Soothe Me" is no noodly shrinking violet, but a grade 10-cross-genre-dance-floor-destroyer which Andy snapped up for label on first listen. Clearly taking it's inspiration from the Rhodes and sample drenched Sound Signature Detroit label and adding in live instrumentation, tape effects, for a track rich in Steely Dan sensibility, coupled with a sub bass and twisted lead line dragging us into a new year. The B-Side Relaxin' At The Flip is a raw slab of analogue goodness, flying 606 high hats, a tough kick drum and simple elements driving the track forwards, best heard 8am in a dark corner of a club.

  1. Bayanyonyoba (5:44)
  2. Don't Judge Me Bad (3:17)
Review: The latest volume in Rush Hour's Special Series focuses on the work of legendary - if under-appreciated - South African artist Senyaka Kekana, whose 1980s and early '90s output remains a firm favourite of open-minded crate-diggers. The EP brings together two tracks from impossible-to-find albums on 12" for the first time. On the A-side you'll find "Bayanyoyoba", a warm and rolling, chant-laden, mid-tempo deep house cut which originally featured on the artist's cassette-only 1993 set Ma-Gents. Arguably even better - and that's saying something - is flipside cut, "Don't Judge Me Bad", a 1987 soul cut that draws influence from boogie, AOR rock and jazz-funk. Both tracks are superb and well worth heavy rotation.

  2. A Little Piano (6:03)
Review: Italian reissue imprint Flash Forward smash it once again with this stone cold piano house classic. Seminal and still soaked in soul and restraint, few records are as influential as this timeless 12" by Rispoli and Montefiori. "What You Need" deserved to hog the spotlight but "A Little Piano" has just as much class and groove. No collection should be complete without. But hurry... Limited to only 100 copies.

Review: We were rather impressed by Emil Sunesson's contribution to Lagaffe Tales recent multi-artist EP (Tale of Tales Vol. 2), so hopes are naturally high for this debut solo EP. Happily, there's much to admire throughout, from the loose jazz guitar samples, twinkling electronics and rolling deep house grooves of "Everything Changes", to the jazz-funk goes disco-house brilliance of "Pistachio Sour", which includes a thrillingly filter-heavy breakdown amongst its sizeable list of attractions. The latter track is pumped up further by Outplay Recordings' co-founder Daniel Leseman, whose loopy disco-house version somehow manages to retain the percussive looseness of Sunesson's original mix despite its bustling and booming ethos.

SUED 018 (12")
Cat: SUED 018. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Track 1 (8:22)
  2. Track 2 (8:03)
Review: SUED was birthed back in 2011 with a pair of 12" singles jointly produced by SW (Stefan Wust) and SVN (Sven Rieger). Since then, the label has gone from strength to strength, but collaborations between Wust and Rieger have been a rare commodity. This two-tracker, then, is keenly anticipated. As is now customary on SUED releases, they've not bothered with track names, instead just getting straight down to business via the dubby deep house warmth of "Track 1", where short bursts of hardcore-era breakbeats and arm-swinging drum fills help keep the energy levels high. "Track 2" is an altogether deeper and more mind-altering affair, with fluttering ambient house synth riffs wrapping themselves around another typically dub-wise deep house groove.

Cat: OLS 017. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Jungelknugen (Four Tet remix) (7:49)
  2. Jungelknugen (Prins Thomas remix) (8:59)
Review: Todd Terje has yet to release the original version of "Jungelknugen", but he's decided to release these remixes anyway. It makes sense: as you'd expect, both are top notch. Four Tet handles the A-side, delivering a version rich in Italian dream house style pianos, swirling synthesizer chords, jazzy musical touches, analogue bass and the kind of live-and-loose beats that the veteran prodicer has become famous for. It even boasts a rush-inducing breakdown for those 6AM "Scandolearic" moments. On the flip, Terje's old pal Prins Thomas takes the track in a different direction, fusing Terje's piano motifs with bleep style sub-bass, psychedelic electronics, and some swinging disco beats of his own.

Cat: TOOLWAXX 004. Rel: 24 Jul 17
  1. Track 1 (12:32)
  2. Track 2 (12:53)
Review: The mysterious Toolwaxx imprint returns with its fourth edition. Rumoured to be anonymous artists from the Romanian minimal house scene, there has never been any solid evidence to indicate who it ever actually is but when the music is this good: that is all that matters. The percussion driven hypnotic roller on the A side is geared for long mixes and even even longer DJ sets of the marathon variety. There is proper trance induction in store on this one, it's quite brilliant and no wonder it appealed to the likes of Raresh. On the flip, take a trip into the exotic with this odd, slightly pop inflected jam which is perfect for sunny morning time revelry at Sunwaves, with its catchy '80s europop melody over a lean minimal techno beat. Get weird!

  4. Night Long (10:11)
Review: Having established his credentials under via a trio of well-regarded EPs on Eastenderz, the producer formerly known as Lizz unveils his most intriguing release to date. Credited to Petre Vali (his real surname is Valentin), From Inside is a double 10-inch treat full of evocative, ear-pleasing dancefloor workouts. As you'd expect, there are a couple of cuts that reminded us of his previous work - see the trippy electronics and undulating tech-house grooves of "Night Long" and sumptuously spacey chords, sharp stabs and crunchy beats of "High Emotions" - but also a couple of notable departures. There's a chunk of melancholic, dub-fuelled deep techno goodness (the wonderful "Far Away") and a vocal-sporting sliver of Balearic/tech-house fusion ("Bourjois"); both are amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

  3. Theme 03 (4:53)
  4. Theme 04 (6:05)
Review: First in a three part series by Dutch producer Frits Wentink, presented in a hand stamped picture sleeve. Wentink has been one of The Netherlands' most steady artists since his first release in 2012. As the head honcho of both Will & Ink and Bobby Donny, he is known for pushing quality house music. Starting off with with the neon-lit late night groove of "Theme 01", the slo-mo boogie down groove of "Theme 02" is equally impressive and had us reminiscing of classic Metro Area. On the flip, "Theme 03" is the EP's most straight up moment: this kind of dusty deep house with sexy retro synths and sleek vox samples are right up our street. "Theme 04" is a woozy and disjointed groove, with its broken beats and skittering melodies getting and inventive groove on: that's for sure.

Review: Via well received releases on the likes of Ghostly International and Kompakt, Berlin-based Dauwd Al Hilali has spent the last six years releasing increasingly impressive forays into deep house and techno. Given that many of these combined effortless musical warmth and mellow grooves with nods to more experimental electronic fare both old and new (Terry Riley, the Radiophonic Workshop, krautrock, Detroit beatdown etc.), hopes are naturally high for this debut album on Ninja Tune offshoot "Technicolour". Happily, it's exactly the kind of gently melodious and rhythmically persuasive set you'd expect, with his usual rich and hazy workouts being joined by tracks that variously look to ambient music and Theo Parrish for inspiration.
