Review: The New York-based (U)nity is made up of Michael Valeanu, Axel Tosca Laugart, Chris Smith, Max Cudworth and Amaury Acosta. They formed the band in 2006 as a project to explore Afro-Cuban jazz, funk, soul and contemporary electronica. They say they've been influenced by everyone from Chucho Valdes to Art Blakey to Led Zeppelin to Kendrick Lamar, and you can definitely hear all of that in this jawdropping work. "Guarapachanga" is special in that it was the first song written by the band back in their days as music students at The New School. It's derived from the style known as guarapachangeo - the most advanced form of Cuban rumba, heavily improvisational and based on very complex rhythms and melodies. On this recording, (U)nity is graced with a guest performance by Grammy Award winner Pedrito Martinez, a master rumbero, one of the greatest conga players ever, an innovator who has left a permanent mark on Cuban music. Martinez is also a priest in the Yoruba religion and a historian of Cuban culture.

Over its eight and a half minutes, "Guarapachanga" twists and turns and journeys through a mind bending array of different tempos and modes, from Latin jazz to hip hop, ultimately ending with a trippy ambient soundscape. The whole thing is overlaid with free spirited melody, soul and the Afro-Cuban essence that is the band's lifeblood. The white-hot live playing gives it the feel of the best early-morning jam session, yet it packs a sonic punch that will make it sound incredible on a good sound system in the hands of adventurous DJs in the world-beat or spiritual-house vein. If you didn't know "Guarapachanga" was a contemporary work you might mistake it for a Loft classic; yet it's also as fresh and exciting as anything you'll hear this year.

Review: While they may have mined many of their classic early releases, it's taken until now for the resurgent Vibraphone crew to return to their very first offering form way back in 1992. 49th Floor was a pseudonym of Stefano Curti, one of the mainstays of the label, and Night Passage was the classic record that started it all off. The whole EP has been given the remastering treatment and sounds fresher than ever, with "Fast City" in particular shining bright with its urgent swing, luscious bassline and sprightly keys. This is house music in its purest form, often imitated but never replicated.

Review: The latest offering on Owen Jay's Batti Batti label features a cast of characters doing different but equally excellent things within the realm of deep house. Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Kiddmisha & Apoena set light to the B-side with the restrained but utterly on-point depth charge "Dancin", and then Jonno & Tommo round the record out with the sultry "Mystic Feelings", making this a complete package of high grade house music from the heart.

Review: Hailing from the Russian city of Murmansk, AL-90 brings an all embracing dance sound perfectly in keeping with the Tape Throb Records ethos of distort, layer and rework. Littered with ghostly vocals and the blurred flush of multi layered beats, infectious bass moves the whole in rhythmic brilliance. The A sides, Cheremushki Groove and Fluid, will bring on dream of 90's VHS house with warm broken beats layered with lush vocal samples. The B side Cataract flies higher with a jungle storm waist deep in ambience and the EP closes with a distorted stomping rework of the title track by label founder The Cyclist.

Review: "After 10 years away from vinyl, 3am Wax Vol.1 hails a return to 12' on the label, now in its 13th year. The EP features an all-3am regular artist cast, three making their debut on vinyl and one making a return to 12' after a 12 year gap. 3am boss Al Bradley opens the EP, while label regulars Carlo Gambino, Ben Dean and Michael Scott all return for the 12". With over 400 releases and remixes between the artists, the EP showcases in-house talent from the label - the emphasis on quality rather than names. Ranging from Berlin-influenced deepness through to raw analog acid house, the EP has been doing damage at label gigs throughout 2015 including Berlin, Ibiza, Copenhagen, New York, London & label-home Leeds, with plaudits and support also coming in from a wide range of DJs from the promo."

Review: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

Review: Having been approved by labels as respected as Underground Quality and Autoreply, Brazilian producer Apoena returns to his Allnite label with yet more of that pure and heartfelt deep house music for those who like it classic and classy. "I Know You" punches and tickles in all the right places with its dreamy keys, soulful vocal lick and rock solid drum lines, while "Tristeza Nao Tem Fim" heads into even more blissed-out territory with its rolling groove and heavy-lidded chords. "Lost" has a solid bottom end thrust that wouldn't sound out of place on a Mike Huckaby record, and "Mama Loves You" brings more of that sweet, laid back, feel good feeling to finish up this impeccable collection of house jams.

We've heard the great effort that was the label's inaugural release entitled Good Music Hips, Bad Music Fists E.P. but he appears to have backdated this release as NATURIST 000. "Ceramics" displays the producer's usual 'airy' and organic deep house sound while "Heritage On The Sign" has faint Oriental aesthetics over its broken house beats and lush vintage synths. Finally on the flip is the breathtaking ambient journey "Sleeping Assault" full of splendid bell textures and emotive keys floating away in trails of endless reverb.

Review: Stockholm based Art Alfie unleashes his debut album on local institution Studio Barnhus. The Karlovak co-head (alongside usual partner in crime Mr. Tophat) has had a consistent output, amassing a huge discography in only so many years and consolidates all that experience right here on this fine collection of moods and grooves; all very blissful and sunny with the unmistakable dust and swing of the MPC throughout. Starting out smoothly and deep on "A Lover's Anxiety" featuring subtle jazz elements and shimmering keys, "Klubbenborg" afterwards gets its stomp on in fine from. The slow motion disco of "A Blues" (Dolphin Cruise edit) is just mde for dancefloor drifting and is easily suited to the early evening as it is to the late night alike. Also, "Esquinas" (feat Daniel Raaf) gets its latin stomp on with this furious steel drum workout with real potential crossover appeal.

Art Of Tones gets busy on the loose drums and slappy bass, DJ Spinna puts a new twist on a classic rising hook while Sean McCabe takes us right back to Nu Yorican soul heaven. Instantly making up for the EP title's search engine-unfriendliness with four sparkling grooves, it's clear this young man knows his roots and how to build a palette. Each cut hitting with a classic Chicago bounce and layers of Fingers-style uplift and hope in the melodic layers, we're consistently tapped into a feeling and narrative that's both on-point and heavy in heritage. From the daydream twinkles of "Porno" to the soft-focus jazzier twist of "Let's Play", this pushes all the right buttons.

Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

It's a pretty diverse affair on his debut Pankorama LP, starting off with the rather rather Pal Joey sounding "Sala Sensi" before he dives into some cosmo-balearic tinged ambient on the lovely "Clypp". Dusty swing-fuelled underground house is covered covered on the appropriately titled "Shufflington" or especially the stopmin' "Operator In Excelsis". "Notion" bridges the gap between label head Andrew Hogge's fascination with the exotic and analogue electronics wonderfully.

The Nomad EP features the absolutely sublime "Nomand (Full Experience)" a bittersweet and emotive journey through techno-soul that's reminiscent of Jazzanova via John Beltran; this track is pure ecstasy and when that Spanish guitar comes in, it's one of those 'wow' moments! The reprise of the track is pure bliss, focusing in on that guitar sound and some immersive ambient atmosphere. On the flip we've also got the uplifting deep house vibes of "Tokyo Burning" which sounds more on the Ron Trent tip; this one's great too!

Review: Melbournian DJ/producer Bell Towers is one of Public Possession's most prolific artists. This 12" is his seventh for the Munich-based stable in just under four years. It's something of a celebratory, peak-time affair, with A-side "All Aboard" offering a near perfect balance of flanged, ear-catching disco guitars, elastic live bass, DJ-friendly special effects, and a house sensibility. "Night Train To Nowhere" is a more druggy and trippy affair, with Bell Towers channeling the spirit of kraut greats Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream on a cut that sits somewhere between Italo-disco, kosmiche, and quirky, left-of-centre house. In other words, it's another rock solid EP.

Review: Despite having a hand in the running of Studio Barnhus - and, of course, regularly releasing on the imprint - Axel Boman has decided that he needs a new sub-label on which to release his music. This first BarnBarn outing sees Boman in fine form, emphatically laying down a marker via the Steve Reich style cyclical riffs, wonky new age melodies, swooping chords, sustained horror notes and layered tribal house percussion of "Geeks". It's a fine track, though nowhere near as wild and alien as flipside cut "Voodoo". This composition, where relentless waves of electronics and bubbling lead lines crash against a crunchy rhythm track, somehow manages to be both pleasingly positive and fuzzily distorted.

Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.

Review: Fred Peterkin has decided that his latest full-length excursion should be credited to Captain P, an occasional alter ego first introduced on 2010 debut album The Incredible Adventures of Captain P. Musically, Escapism includes nods to many of his previously explored influences - slick Detroit hip-hop, Motor City techno, luscioius Chicago deep house, and so on - as well as audio musings on the effects of the Internet-driven news agenda (the superb, collage style cut-up "Social Media") and the nature of art itself ("21 Century Artist", a superb chunk of rubbery, soulful techno). For all the variety, it's the dancefloor-ready cuts that really sparkle, with the dreamy "Escapism", soul-flecked "All I Want To Say" and "These Times"- a brilliant hook-up with Lady Blaktronika - standing out.

On the A-side, Al Zanders does a stellar job reworking "Carlotta", in the process laying down a hypnotic, percussion rich deep house shuffler full of bright cowbell hits, sunset-friendly jazz guitar licks and bubbly electronic melodies. On the flip you'll find a more than pleasant surprise: a deep, dreamy and utterly beguiling drum & bass remix of "Oddity" from Smallville regular Moomin. Its expert combination of evocative musical elements and crispy, snare-driven D&B rhythms is reminiscent of the golden age of Bukem-style liquid D&B.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: When Kerri Chandler wrote the tracks that make up the Panic E.P way back in 1992, he was little more than an up-and-coming producer from East Orange, New Jersey. Much has changed in the quarter of a century since, but Panic remains one of the now legendary house producer's finest 12" singles. Check, for example, the snaking sax samples, thumping kick-drums and fluttering vocal samples of late night classic "Get Up", the bouncy New Jersey drums and undulating synth-bass of "Something Wrong" and the basement-bothering, disco-sampling wooziness of "Love Is Over". These are raw, stripped back house tracks from the top drawer that don't seem to have aged since the moment they first appeared in stores.

Review: The Black Orpheus imprint kicked off late last year with a smacking EP of off-kilter house and tech-ridden breaks from the young Alphonse, and we've been eagerly awaiting a follow-up from the label. Not to be confused with the Dutch garage rock band of the same name, The Comedown is a mysterious new talent that has a certain knack for making some killer techno bangers fit for the sweatiest of basement dancefloors. "Kokie's Place" charges its way through the groove with a cascade of kick drums that unleash deep, echoing melodies and synth abstractions spewing from all corners; the remix from The Realtor manages to infuse even more of a swing into an already sultry arrangement, making these two a pair of ultra-effective DJ weapons for instant deployment.

Review: Cody Currie's self-titled EP on Pusic Records was one of the better deep house debuts of 2016. This follow-up for Better Listen is similarly impressive. It sees him showcase a range of tracks that fuse a hip-hop, sample-digging mentality with the dusty, soul-flecked deep house swing of Chicago and Detroit's jazzier producers. The rich and organic sounding opener "Hearty & Healthy"- all hip-hop vocal samples, spacey boogie synth breakdowns and MPC-driven deep house beats - is particularly alluring, though the 'Disco Mix' of "Dynamite" is also superb. The liquid deep house funk of "Beer Machine", where disco samples pop in and out of a rich backing track, feels like a late night anthem in waiting.

Review: According to La Chinerie themselves. after repping their dear home of France on the first volume, they are 'this time enlightening Italy's house scene through an eclectic V/A gathering eight tracks from eight talented macaronis.' Southern Italy represents in the form of Salerno's Giovanni Damico with the funky and dusty soul heaven of "No Al Maltrattamento Dei Samples" while Lecce's finest Marcello Napoletano delivers the goods as always on the gritty house shenanigans of "Insignami". Elsewhere, there's Restoration's Lucretio (via Berlin of course) delivering some muscular, hardware oriented grooves on "I Piu Piccoli" while the north of The Beautiful Country represents too, rest assured, in the from of Bologna's Bassa Clan with the bouncy and swinging NYC circa '94 vibe of "Notte Brava".

  3. Flauta (13:46)
Review: Without attracting much hype, Das Komplex was responsible for some of the most enjoyable, dub-fuelled disco and Balearic releases of 2016. He's started 2017 in pretty confident fashion, too, delivering more fine fare via Father & Son Records & Tapes, People Must Jam and, now, Love On The Rocks. Interesting, this outing is a little bolder, woozier and weirder than some outings, though his love of reverb and delay remains a constant. "Szlugi" is an eccentric fusion of clattering drum machine percussion, trippy synthesizer motifs and lo-fi electronics, while "Polenz" effortlessly joins the dots between cosmic disco, jazz-funk and sample-heavy deep house. Best of all, though, is epic flipside "Flauta", a musically rich, Clavinet-heavy dub disco affair that rises and falls for 13 spellbinding minutes.
