Review: Back in 2016, Martin Jenkins unveiled the first instalment of a "loose trilogy" of vaguely conceptual albums for the Ghost Box label. Entangled Routes is the third and final part of this trilogy and lands two years after its predecessor, Hollow Earth. Though not expressly acknowledged within the music, Jenkins' inspiration this time round was apparently "mycorrhizal networks" - subterranean networks of funghi that transfer water, carbon and other minerals and nutrients to the roots of plants. Musically, what's on offer is intoxicating and far-sighted, with Jenkins mixing up trippy ambient psychedelia with modular-rich, melodious electronica, throbbing, arpeggio-driven dancefloor cuts and what would once have been called IDM. As usual, the album is full of great ideas, beautifully executed, and sequenced in such a way as to provide a genuine aural journey.

Review: German band Kreidler reach the rather significant milestone of a fifteenth studio album here with Spells And Daubs. By now they are masters of their form, which is a mix of electronica and krautrock but with hints of influence from British pop music. The rhythms are bendy and dubby, ever evolving and alluring from the off with well defined lines and lots of little details all fleshing out the grooves. Dark melodies never grow too foreboding as clicks, whirrs and hits swing to and fro over the top. It is a trance including record that demands close listening on a good system for maximum effect.

Review: It would be fair to say that 1977's Trans-Europe Express album was one Kraftwerk found their niche. More polished and accessible than its predecessors, the album's blend of futuristic synth-pop songs, trance-inducing electronic grooves and recurring melodic motifs became a blueprint that they would later return to again and again. The B-side suite of train-travel inspired tracks ('Trans-Europe Express' to 'Endless Endless') remains one of their most evocative, atmospheric and perfectly constructed musical works, while opener 'Europe Endless' is arguably one of the most beautiful and life-affirming tracks in their canon. This 2020 edition, pressed to clear vinyl, boasts brilliantly re-mastered sound and a bonus booklet containing iconic images of the band from the period

Review: Known for their cover versions - having re-read Sly Stone, Plastic Bertrand, Les Chats Sauvages, and many more over the years - Telex managed to tread a fine line between comedy and innovation. Focusing heavily on a lo-fi synthesised sound, the Belgian alt-poppers would use plenty of humour in their work, but never allowed this to outshine or overshadow the musicality of it all. Released in 1980, Neurovision is a case in point. According to the band, this was their tongue-in-cheek entry to the Eurovision Song Contest, for which they were chosen as representatives for their home country in the same year. Deliberately banal lyrics, mostly referring to the competition itself, married to the glittering wonder of a proto-electronic soundtrack, mark it as a work of bold daring and a little genius. Sadly, it failed to secure them last place in the tournament, as they hoped, forcing them to settle for 17 out of 19.

Review: Hauled from the vaults of cult ephemera, Endgame: Brox Lotta Finale is a 1983 gem of low-budget sci-fi trash for all B-movie weirdos. But if the film itself relies on its flaws for its charm, don't let that detract from the excellent soundtrack by Carlo Maria Cordio. The Italian synth composer also known for Troll 2, Pieces and other niche favourites serves up a panoply of incidentals, themes and sequences that will leave you reeling in a reverie of VHS grade bombast. Pulse Video have gone to town on this reissue, with high end artwork and eight collectible lobby cards in a gatefold sleeve which make this a must-have for all devotees of retro cinema oddities.

Review: Before we get into it, let's just stop to consider what it must be like to be John Carpenter' son. A titan of horror, science fiction, and fantasy filmmaking who overcame early critical smiting to garner first a global cult following and more latterly reappraisal and recognition from the cinematic institution, while the reality of having this cultural powerhouse as a parent probably isn't along these lines, we like to think childhood was one long creative play session where imagination was only held back by the need to sleep.

Spurious point made, this latest addition to JC's musical oeuvre sees him team up with offspring Cody - a musician and composer in his own right - and long-time collaborator Daniel Davies for the score to the most recent reboot in the Halloween franchise. You can't touch a classic, of course, but what the actual movie lacked in originality the music more than compensates for, taking what was already an unsettling and chilling aural experience and modernising without fundamentally changing.

Review: Released three years after the disappointing commercial success of Cats Without Claws (which has since received the acclaim it deserves) All Systems Go was the thirteenth album by disco icon Donna Summer, which once again saw her collaborate with Harold Faltermeyer, co-writer of the hit single 'Hot Stuff' and her successful Bad Girls LP. The album birthed two singles, such as the romantic RnB song 'Dinner with Gershwin' gave Summer her highest UK chart placing since the '70s, and the second was the bittersweet 'Only the Fool Survives' featuring Mickey Thomas.

Review: Baby Buddha was Charles Hornday, David Javelosa, Meg Brazill and Todd Rosa, a band that released just one album in 1981 then a second in 1987. Their debut is a cult classic that brought new ideas to the world of no wave and synth, electro and rock. With its chilly minimal computer beats and post-punk vocal deliveries, it makes for a still future-sounding world of sound that is danceable and atmospheric as it covers classics like 'Stand By Your Man' and 'All Shook Up' in a hugely idiosyncratic fashion. This is weirdly wonderful, playfully scary and artfully DIY music that manages plenty of reference points and ends up sounding like nothing else.

Review: This playfully titled release features David Javelosa (on synth and vocals) along with Meg Brazill (on bass and vocals) plus drummer Todd "Rosa" Rosencrans. Side One features five studio tracks, none of which were included on the band's 1981 Posh Boy LP, Life After Breakfast. Three of these tracks were recorded in '82; there's no information regarding the provenance of the other two songs. The records' second side collects five live recordings, capturing Los Microwaves onstage in New York City (The Peppermint Lounge) and Boston as well as at San Francisco's own I-Beam, a venue that often played host to the band. Those tracks date form roughly the same ear, 1980-83. Sonically the songs variously recall Blondie, Flying Lizards, Gang of Four and a far less dour Human League. Importantly, the band rocks, even when it's employing a spare drum kit, solid but elemental bass, and monophonic analog synthesizers. The stripped down aesthetics of the group - necessitated by its minimalist instrumental approach - are nonetheless thrilling. Even if you weren't there in 1980, this'll take you back.

Review: A world of brutal beats and hard edge techno rhythms beckons on this new min album, vocals often obstructed by brushing synths and comprised textural sounds, tortured leads and fizzing apocalyptic energies that make it perfect for gritty warehouse raves. Opener 'The Brain Plays With Me' sets a powerful tone from the off, while 'Claroscuro' slips into a slower but just as caustic world of sound. 'Don't Trust In The First Whispers' is a paranoid chamber of reflected vocals and crashing hits that has you looking over your shoulder and 'Melted Doubts' is doom laden drone from the end of the world.

Review: Elektronik Body Girl is the musical alter-ego of Shelbatra Jashari featuring production assistance from Brussels's soFa. The Belgo-Albanian postpunk pair cooked up sounds that accompany an imagined dystopian industrial wasteland with tons of improv and lots of raw, jagged rhythm. Dealing with the "empowering feminine" and its representation were key to the vision of Jashari as well as abrasive textures and stark atmospheres. Her vocals touch on her roots in Belgium and Kosovo from an outsider's position and label associate Toulouse Low Trax cooks up a brilliant beatdown mix to seal the deal.

Review: Minimal Wave is honored to present West View, a double LP of rare demos and newly remastered classics by UK duo Vicious Pink. Vicious Pink was an electrifying synth-pop duo formed by Josephine Warden and Brian Moss, who met in a smokey Leeds nightclub in 1981. The pair formed their band Vicious Pink Phenomena and soon after went on to provide gloriously off-kilter backing vocals for their friends, Soft Cell, completely unrehearsed. Later, they dropped Phenomena to simplify their name. Between 1982 and 1986, they released seven singles that all reached the UK dance charts, despite the fact that their ambitions never lay in commercial success. To this day, their music remains artful, catchy, and provocative. West View compiles material from their early days together, featuring previously unreleased demos as well as newly remastered classics like Cccan't You See and My Private Tokyo. The double LP is housed in a glossy heavyweight sleeve, accompanied by a 12-page LP-sized booklet featuring the duo's entire 'how it happened' story, unpublished lyrics, and unpublished photos from those early years. The double LP is limited to 999 copies.

Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.

What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.
