Review: inspired by cassette labels such as Fuck Off Tapes, Weird Noise and other underground UK labels/music of the late '70s and early '80s. The label was rebooted in 2014 with a series of vinyl and CD compilation albums taken from the label's '80s archives plus reissues from more than 75 albums. You can definitely hear the resemblance of other seminal acts of the time, like for instance Cabaret Voltaire on "Tropic Of Cancer", Suicide or No More on the gritty synth punk of "TV Screen" or even Bauhaus on the sombre "Hello/Goodbye".

Cat: MOD 005. Rel: 24 Oct 16
  1. Machina 1.1 (3:50)
  2. Machina 1.2 (4:08)
Review: With a discography stretching back to the mid-noughties, the Revolving Eyes have been paying tribute to EBM, new beat and minimal wave long before it was fashionable to do so. It's perhaps for this reason that Ex Machina, their first single since 2007, is so hotly anticipated. The genius of both "Machina 1.1" and "Machina 1.2" lies in the Belgian duo's ability to combine authentic synthesizer and drum machine sounds, with both classic '80s alternative tropes and the hypnotic, booty-shaking fluidity of acid house. This is particularly evident on the deliciously wonky, mind-altering pump of flipside "Machina 1.2", where bubbly electronics and tweaked acid lines ride a no-nonsense drum machine groove.

Review: LTM boss James Nice spent four years in Belgium in the early '80s, during which time he ran Factory Records' short-lived Factory Benelux offshoot. He's perhaps the perfect man, then, to curate this fascinating insight into the Belgian cold wave scene. There are certainly some parallels between early Factory material and the moody post-punk, miserablist cold wave rock of acts like Rel Rex and Digtal Dance (whose "Human Zoo" is a highlight here). Nice also doffs his cap to future EBM stars Front 242 and all-round oddballs Allez Allez, at the same time turning attention to thrilling musical curiosities from the likes of Satin Wall, Polyphonic Size (whose "Kyoto" is arguably the compilation's stand-out track) and Marine.
