Review: Well, we couldn't really be happier. In fact, there is almost nothing to say about this album apart from the fact that it is absolutely, downright essential. Originally released in 1986 on Rough Trade here in the UK, it has been reissued a few time over the years but has always vanished in the blink of an eye and reappeared on the EBay and Discogs circuits for big bucks. Finally, you can indulge in a beautifully remastered version on virgin vinyl. In what is seen by many cultic Russell fans as perhaps his biggest achievement, the LP drifts in and out of light and shadows with utter ease, truly portraying the genius of the man who paved much of the way for modern electronic music generally. From start to finish, it's an ethereal mixture of sparse beats, effect manipulations and folklore, charismatically told by one of the only artists in the history of experimental music to really combine and successfully bind so many unexpected musical terrains. We are only mere mortals, so we won't describe the music to you...just get yourself a copy and see...

I, Carpenter (Piers Harrison remix)
Review: Having a debut that managed to possibly be the most regularly outed track by Andrew Weatherall as he dug deep to discover the sound that resonated as A Love From Outer Space, while at the same time seemingly slipping under the radar of practically everyone else and disappearing in to relative cult obscurity is some mean feat.
Unperturbed that the odd(disco)ball that was the acidic genius of Morodor In Milan was shamefully overlooked, Maurice & Charles have again taken time out from their daytime media and art enriched lives to hunker down and offer up another take on their twisted idea of what makes people groove. In Sofa Love, their ode to the marvels and pitfalls of the mega-city, bubbling 303 again underpins a twisted lyrical journey. Set against crashing percussion, this is their peaen to la Metropole. Ably supporting it is a driving, rhythmic workout from our own Jamie Paton, taking the original and stripping everything back to jack like it should. If that frightens off the less adventurous, then I,Carpenter will perhaps offer a respite. An off-kilter, acid-funk nod to the experimentations of Eno & Byrne, this quirky gem makes you wonder, why did no-one use that sample before? To end comes a solo debut from Soft Rock's Piers Harrison. His drum heavy remix straightens things up and lets the story unfold.

Review: 2013 was a good year for Mr Natalizia. Breaking out of his musical (comfort) zone and touring schedule as one half of Kompakt Records stars Walls, a deeper side to his music oeuvre was shown on the excellent Not Waving debut, Umwelt, before then going on to compile the killer "Mutazione" compilation of Italian New Wave 1980-1988 for Strut Records. Spanning 9 tracks Human Capabilities takes the sound of Umwelt and the subsequent super limited cassette only "reinterpretations" of Redacted and mixes harder percussive tracks alongside explorations of melody through ambient pieces that close each side. On titles Mathematical Man, Double Blind and Defensive Function, industrial and kosmische percussion is pushed to the fore, while Power Source Above Beam Line is the closest thing to a club track Alessio has produced outside of Walls. However, it's the more melodic Future Rain, Etosha Pan Aderci and the closing Satie homage, Conscious/Subliminal that a new side to the project can be heard. Having been named after a This Heat song, Not Waving is developing beyond that to go as far as the album title suggests. With a pressing of just 400 copies before more new music comes from Not Waving, plus material due from Walls and the planned return of guitar based side-project, Banjo Or Freakout, all coming later this year, 2014 looks to be a more exciting year for Mr Natalizia than ever before.

Be Me
Germans In The Jungle
Review: A second and no less dashing record from Thomas Bullock's long delayed STD Records surfaces and is a real mind bender! Apparently limited to just 333 copies, both "German In The Jungle" and "Be Me" will appeal to the more adventurous selectors out there, with the former production the sort of track you might find in a set from the likes of Powell, Cherrystones or Bankhead - though probably in original form given their digging pedigree! A dense collage of booming drum rhythms, harmonic breathing and treated vocals, "German In The Jungle" rarely shifts below the intense gear before ending all too abruptly. "Be Me" is no less mental, with ragged synth lines pinballing around the gaps between a rather unmixable polyrhythmic back bone.

Review: Fans of the Firecracker label will know that concepts such as release dates are malleable at best, and should instead focus on embracing the music when it eventually arrives. First announced last summer, Everyone Is A Door sees Italian producer Panoram step up with his debut album that expands on the vivid, freeform approach first seen on a 2012 EP for the supposedly Mongolia-based Scenario label. Panoram seems more than happy to flit between classic disco, funk and Dilla when looking for inspiration, with the twelve tracks leading you on a journey that's refreshingly psychedelic and filled with squelching funk. Everyone Is A Door comes across as a rich listening experience with plenty of ammo for the more adventurous selectors out there and presents Panoram as a fine addition to the Firecracker family.

Review: Valcrond Video presents the next work by sound and image artist Luke Wyatt, Songs From Bad Kid School.

On a high desert plain, inside a cinder block compound, a prank squad is incarcerated. Between fiddling with ninja stars and leafing through back issues of Fangoria, they find time to scrape out the soundtrack of their escape.
On the first track, heatsick guitars and steel wool beats suggest a landscape strewn with abandoned car carcasses, old Camaros left for dead in the sun, used for shotgun practice.

The B-side leads off with the beat-less, articulated sprawl of "Saline Flats". Here is the story of a desert search for water: figures warping mirage-like on the horizon as they make a confused journey over dunes, ending with a cathartic drone that suggests the mirages resolving into a real oasis. Though it is just as likely that the bad kids have expired from thirst, and ascended to the sublime.

Review: Although now better known for their respective solo work, and the latter's involvement with Sean Canty as Demdike Stare, Andy Stott (pictured above) and Miles Whittaker's Millie & Andrea project stands as one of Modern Love's more unique projects. Releasing a string of 12? singles on Modern Love sub-label Daphne from 2008-2010, the duo's music under the name experimented with various combinations of 2-step, jungle, grime, dub techno and footwork across five 12? singles. Now they return with Drop the Vowels, which makes complete sense given underground music's renewed fascination with all things revolving around the hardcore continuum. Just as wide ranging as previous material, with the LP covers the kind of tectonic mood pieces and wiry noise techno as Stott and Whittaker's recent solo material whilst delivering some of the most straight-up dancefloor material Modern Love has put out in years. Without doubt one of the albums of the year.

Stabil Elite - "Dogan Bogart"
EARL - "Rosa Del Inca"
Montezumas Rache - "Sigma Tanz"
Tolouse Low Trax - "Two Time Measure"
Review: Themes For Great Cities is fast becoming one hell of a label! Never knowing what to expect from these folks, they've really done it this time with a collaborative effort from a few new faces on the scene. Stabil Elite produce an 80s informed, prog track that's driving as it is mesmerising, while "Rosa Del Inca" by Earl is more broken and improvisational, opting for a more industrial spirit. The real winner comes from the oddly named Montezumas Rache in what could easily be a track on DJ Sotofett's Wania or Fett-Burger's Sex Tags UFO - organic percussion and ethnic instruments collide beautifully. Last but not least, Toulouse Low Trax offer some chugging, utterly funked-out boogie that's both swinging and completely deranged at the same time. Class.

Review: We've been waiting anxiously for this one and it's finally landed - not only on our shelves but also on our office turntable, where it's spinning around endlessly and hypnotizing us into a state of total folly. Kompakt has always had a knack for signing the right record at the right time and this debut LP from Vermont aka Marcus Worgull and Motor City Drum Ensemble's Danilo Plessow is an absolute winner! The album is basically any synth lover's paradise, where sparse but rhythmic melodies glide in and out of foreboding tunnels and more docile landscapes. We're especially pleased with Plessow's impressive step into more experimental, Krautrocky territories and really putting his synth collection to work here.

Eternal Return
Review: Well, you know it's a special day when a new Southern Lord record lands on your lap! The God...the Don...Stephen O'Malley's co-run label with Greg Anderson has been continuously pushing the boundaries of electronic music since its inception over a decade ago and it most certainly isn't showing any signs of stopping. For this latest collaborative effort, the two founders appear under their Sunn O moniker together with Norway's Ulver trio for three slices of total sonic warping. "Let There Be Light" reminds us of Miles Davis' more daring concoctions on "Bitches Brew", while "Western Horn" is a militant drone excursion filled with gloomy field recordings and wailing, syncopated instruments. "Eternal Return" is on a more ethnic tip, bringing together elements of ancient rituals wrapped in a devastating cloak of electronic doom. You can't overlook this, really...

Review: The Not So Secret Diary label continues with its conceptual charm thanks to two ritualistic hymns by the Suburbs outfit to mark the third release for both label and artist. As per usual, it's a fine whirlpool of techno, space-jazz, drone and anything else you might be able to fit in there. However, unlike many other attempts at such a wide spectrum of music, you can count on Not So Secret Diary to make it work. "NSSD003.1" is an infectious, dubbed-out, aqueous percussion jam that will immediately seduce you into its visceral groove. The same goes for "NSSD003.2" on the flip, where another hypnotising bundle of atmospherics and kicks fuse to the point of almost complete perfection. Sublime and hotly recommended.

Review: Rome-based Panoram is something of a mystery. Very little is known about him, and he's hardly prolific - in fact, this debut album is only his second release, after 2012's acclaimed (and now devilishly hard to find) Accents 12" on Scenario. The mystery is heightened by his scattergun approach to music-making; Everyone is a Door's 10 tracks variously take in warm, jazz-flecked analogue pop, Eric Satie style piano movements, quirky ambience, Boards of Canada-ish IDM and decidedly cosmic synth wig-outs. Throughout, there's an off-kilter, soft focus feel to proceedings that's never less than thrillingly atmospheric. Everyone is a Door, then, is an impressive debut album; expect to hear more from the mysterious Roman in coming years.

Review: William Bennett's Cut Hands project originally debuted at the end of 2011 with volumes 1 & 2 of his Afro Noise series, recomposing African rhythms into the framework of industrial techno, noise and ambient music. Catching the ear of both Karl O'Connor and Kiran Sande, Bennett has since released on their respective Downwards and Blackest Ever Black labels as well as putting out the Black Mamba album on Susan Lawly in 2012. This Volume 3 of the series features reworked and remastered versions of previously released vinyl tracks like "Madwoman" and "Immersion", as well as tracks from the Black Mamba CD not yet released on wax.

Review: This is something very special indeed for fans of both Nine Inch Nails and Coil, as unreleased remixes from the British avant-garde band of Trent Reznor's legendary band are finally released. Originally made almost 20 years ago, these tracks were featured on a bootleg called Uncoiled last year, but here see an official version thanks to the Cold Spring label. The centrepiece is Coil's version of "Closer" which featured on the opening credits of David Fincher's 1995 film Se7en, but each of the other tracks - which were supposedly tracked down by a NIN forum member - including their breakbeat revision of "Gave Up" and disturbing vocal treatment on "A Downward Spiral" are gems for fans of both acts alike.

Review: Continuing William Bennett's self-styled "afro-noise" project, Volume 4 of his Cut Hands material presents eight more reworked and remastered tracks previously available on his Black Mamba CD and material from records released on Downwards and Blackest Ever Black. Although tracks like "Eat Them Like Bread", "Inchantment" and "Nine Night" all see him in a number of rhythmic moods, "El Paco Mayombe", "Nzambi la Ngonde" and "River Mumma" take a more eerie, ambient approach that shows there's more to Bennett's project than just searing industrial-inspired drums.

Review: It's always a good day when a new Vladislav Delay record hops into our laps and drowns us in a minimal but dense coating of warm, analogue low-end. The man who has releases a whole LP on Honest Jon's Records with his quartet and even collaborated with Moritz Von Oswald returns on for a solo mission. If that doesn't sound appealing, try it for yourself: hook your system up to this new EP, turn your monitors on and let those dubby, percolated beats of "5" and "22" just sink into your cerebral cortex.

Review: Having forged his name in grubby lo-fi sonics with a strong pulse of post punk running through it, through some proactive A&Ring by Mike Paradinas Ekoplekz has been coaxed out of his abstract bolt hole and delivers an album of wild electronics shot through with classic machine soul. The synths that appear on tracks such as "Trace Elements" or "Pressure Level" would never have made it on to earlier releases, but they gel perfectly with the predominant Ekoplekz sound, enriching the listening experience rather than knocking the project off course. It's a fine continuation of both an artist, and the wider tradition of quality leftfield electronica, of which Planet Mu has been a major instigator.

Compartmentalising his arts between writing, painting and music, this Melbourne based guy is the full creative monty. Pressed on 7" format, the two tracks are a sort of modern techno-soul, where electronic basslines fuse with proggy riffs and candid vocals. Not to be missed. Hold tight for the LP!

Review: When a Versatile artist is involved in something, somewhere, we hone in on it like a missile. Thankfully, Tigersushi boss Joakim has provided us with the usual dosage of gasoline for our listening engines and once again, the Frenchman has not disappointed us. Making his debut for his native Because Music, "On The Beach" sees the man in a slightly contemplative mood, delivering a pensive, vocoder-driven percussion workout - a true listening pleasure. CFCF inject a heftier dose of organic drumming to the equation, whilst Joakim's own Cray76 re-wiring opts for the all-out house flair, making this one a sure winner on the floor! But don't worry, Principles Of Geometry are there to rapidly re-form the track into a broken, totally wacked-out fusion of samples and eerie atmospherics. Dig in!

Dilankex (Autechre remix)
Review: London-based producer Nigel Truswell returns to his Oberman Knocks project for another release on Andrea Parker's Aperture label which comes packing a particularly warped Autechre remix. Aperture describe Dilankex as a work of opposites, and there is plenty of differences to discern between Truswell's original work and the resultant mangling from the much loved Warp duo. The original mix of "Dilankex" finds monastic vocals, strings, field recordings and a gloopy bassline not so much driven forward by synthesized beats as dragged unwillingly. Still it remains easy to digest in comparison to the seventeen minute remix from Autechre, where sound unfolds like it's being sucked out of the hardware by vacuum.

Although covering 12 tracks, Sssssssss comes across much like two sides of a continuous mixtape, with the early '00s square wave bass of tracks like "No Liquid" and "Langweilig" melding with the off-kilter house of "Crush Rush" and queasy drift of "Fingerbang" and "Actor 2". Highly recommended to anyone who likes their genres well and truly scrambled.

The title track is a rampant, percussion-driven, post-punk tool and is hotly rewired by none other than LIES affiliates, Ron Morelli and Svengalisghost, who turn in a twisted, metallic version of the original - oscillating atmospherics and a minimalistic kick-hat form an alluring bundle of a groove. "Night With Potential" is a lo-fi kinda tune, with aqueous melodies and hazy landscapes. Our favourite LIES protege, Vereker goes in for the total kill on the remix, creating a nasty, cacophonous and industrial time-bomb for the end of days - this guys has plenty of tricks up his sleeve, apparently.
