Zombie Jamboree
Review: Boom! The good ship Golf Channel returns with the first of two essential offerings and a label debut for the killer Africaine 808. The Berlin-based duo Dirk Leyers and Nomad comprise Africaine 808 and those with a regular vinyl habit will know them from last year's DJ Muscle series from WT Records. As their name suggests, the usage of the 808 is key to the Africaine 808 sound, and their output thus far can be comparable with the music of Comeme albeit with a focus on some of Leyer and Nomad's personal favourite African and island funk tracks. The pair debut on Golf Channel with a two-track 12? that features some excellent graf style sleeve art done by Nomad. DO NOT SLEEP

Eddie C - "O Ye"
Noema - "The Shake"
Bayaya (Axel Boman re-rub)
Disco Maschine (Soft Rocks edit)
Review: The Africa Shakedown label coined one of last year's surprise hits with it's debut release, and the label's second release is likely to prove just as popular. Noema features once more and the Salon Zur Wilden Renate resident has collared contributions from Eddie C, Axel Boman and the Soft Rocks crew. Eddie C is first up with the irresistibly groovy "O Ye" which wouldn't look out of place on a Red Motorbike 45 dinker, whilst Noema conjures up the spirit of Bill Laswell on the dubby, scratchy production "The Shake". Studio Barnhus co-founder Boman is probably the biggest draw here and his rerub of the uncredited "Bayaya" should be familiar to anyone that's caught a DJ set from the fun loving Swede. Soft Rocks bring it home with the heavily delayed jammer "Disco Machine". Strong moves all round here sir.

Track 1 (5:58)
Track 2 (5:52)
Review: The mysterious nut-gathering disco fiends at Secret Squirrel continue their razor-sharp edit work with two more incredibly funky slices of nu-disco. Side A is a spirited fusion of wah wahs, filters and a tight vocal loop from Ike Strong's "Boogie Land" while Side B is a slower, acid-tickled jam that takes Blair's "Nightlife" and brings it kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Both are stunning and are guaranteed to sell out like the previous SS editions.

Hanging (Coyote edit)
In Your Wildest Dreams (Magellanic Cloud edit)
We Love Japan Brother Ninjas
Dreams (Oyama edit)
Review: Is It Balearic..? side label Magic Wand return for an eighth installment here with founders Coyote present and correct and complimented by productions from Magellanic Cloud & Oyama. It's Coyote that commence proceedings with the hazy eyed disco loopery of "Hanging" which sounds like a glorious Love Unlimited Orchestra moment unfurled into infinity. "In Your Wildest Dreams" finds Magellanic Cloud in a more horizontal mood, with a gently throbbing undercurrent adding a hint of darkness. The uncredited "We Love Japan Brother Ninjas" is possibly the highlight here, sitting somewhere between heavily dubbed disco and proto house, whilst the Oyama edit of "Dreams" will appeal to fans of Torn Hawk's plaintive guitar noodlings.

Space-Disco
Space-Disco (1978 original)
Review: a white Mellotron M 400." So starts Klaus Hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the Mellotron. Moving from Prog-Rock guitarist to Cosmic Disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of Cosmic Hoffmann would lead to a number of classic Kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. Before this though came Space-Disco. Initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. An uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. With added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of Cosmic Hoffmann's first and last single, "Weltraumboogie", in 1982. Unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield DJ and music lovers in the years since. Now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 Original will be only add to the collectors dream.

Gang Of Wolves
Not Tonight
In Slow Motion
Review: After a considerable absence, the edit don known simply as Stupid Human returns with a sixth slab of sultry reworked goodness. Quite what the Stupid Human has been doing in the period since the Toni Rock 12" dropped back in May, 2012 is unclear though the three tracks here demonstrate this unnamed individual has lost none of their verve. Lead track "Gang Of Wolves" commences proceedings in a suitably cosmic fashion, with sumptuous disco grooves augmented by the silkiest of vocal turns. On the B Side, "Not Tonight" eases down the tempo scale as Stupid Human reworks some mid '70s heavy funk from SSO whilst "In Slow Motion" feels like a end of the night smoocher played at 33rpm. Great stuff!

Goat - "Run To Your Mama" (Cage & Aviary remix)
Blancmange - "The Western" (Cage & Aviary Nothing Is dub)
Teeth Of The Sea - "Sentimental Journey" (Cage & Aviary Wyld dub)
Review: Following their acclaimed debut album, Migration, on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal label in 2012, Jamie Paton and Nigel Hoyle (aka Nigel Of Bermondsey) have seemed relatively quiet save for the odd remix here and there. Tucked away deep in their South East London base though, a series of remixes and solo projects have been steadily forming. With new C&A material planned for 2014, plus more to come from Jamie's new solo efforts, as well as Nigel making a long overdue reappearance in Maurice & Charles, now seems the right time to draw a line under their collective work to date. Here then are a collection of unreleased interpretations, including the sought after vocal remix of psychedelic darlings, in Goat's anthemic Run To Your Mama. This is followed by a late night dub of 80s pop duo Blancmange that mixes strings, guitar and some dub bass with a dose of space echo before bringing Neil Arthur's classically recognisable refrain shining through. To finish is a remix of Goat's label mates Teeth Of The Sea. FX-soundtrack vocal, bubbling 303 and 808 combine on a proper 3am dub that builds beyond some mere drug-chug.

Play With You
Review: Get Down Edits continues to hold the crown as one of the most prolific editors with two more essential nu-disco funk jams. "Feel The Fire" is a cosmic, spaced out take on The Osmonds' "I,I,I" while "Play With You" turbo charges Carrie Lucas with an uptempo glitter-sprinkled groove with full emphasis on the tight, bright guitar riff. Both, like all his previous editions, rock. Get down tonight!

Roberto Lodola - "Feeling Of The Sun" (Adriatic Seaview remix)
Alien Disco Sugar - "Sea Delights" (Aegean Seaview rework)
VinylAddicted - "Sun Shadow" (Balearic Seaview rework)
Disco Tech - "Cool Breeze" (Baltic Seaview rework)
Review: Editor's Kutz is back with a killer four-tracker, this time focusing on chillin' disco vibes. Sea viewing with relaxing and nostalgic mood is the basic theme. Starting things off with the Italian funk & afrodisco stallion d.j Roberto Lodola, who's recruited by the label for remixing his own "Marimba Do Mar" track since 1986. "Feeling Of The Sun" is full of original percussion by George Aghedo and a crispy rolling beat, stunning synths, rhodes and wonderful, carefree vocals by Antonia Coda. Next we have Alien Disco Sugar, hailing from Samos, the beautiful and sun-drenched Greek Island. "Sea Delights" is a mid-tempo chillin' rework on a track that we all love by William Pitt. Extra keyboards and bass chords make this rework so live and vivid, as Alien Disco Sugar enjoys his cruising on the Aegean Sea. Flip it for another tip by VinylAddicted, who's so keen on unearthing forgotten gems and reworking them with tenderness. This Balearic rework on a rare track since late 70s hosts some extra percussion by Roberto Lodola, while nice lyrics and a slo-mo beatline, accompanied by the sax and the female vocals will definitely take you by surprise. Leaving the Mediterranean to go north, where Disco Tech, based in Stockholm, closes this EP with an indulging Cool Breeze coming from the Baltic Sea. A careful and elegant retouch on the maxi version of Jeremy Spencer Band's homonymous track. Nothing better than a little bit of Fleetwood Mac to accomplish this 3rd "Editor's Kutz" mission!

Review: Japanese edit king Beaten Space Probe lets loose on Glenview once again with three more botty-slapping edits. As those who've been following this funk fiend will know, each one is delivered with such production prowess, they feel like real remixes than mere edits. Highlights here are the soppy-wet electro boggie fusion of "Love Is For Love" and the well-executed Bee Gees loop on "Love". Can you feel the love?

Skatebard - "Confirmation Bias" (Telephones rework)
Love Nation - "Everybody 4 Love" (Telephones version)
Dove Station - "Everybody 2 Breezy" (Telephones dub)
Review: ** REPRESS ** Pleasure Unit is the new label from the excellent Keyboard Masher and it gets off to a fine start here with a selection of reworks from Norwegian producer Telephones that's been issued in conjunction with the Berlin crew Untz Untz. By no means the most prolific of producers, Bergen-based Henning Severud has nonetheless graced the likes of Full Pupp, Sex Tags UFO and most recently The Very Polish Cut-Outs under the Telephones guise so you expect quality. And that's what you get as Severud reworks tracks from Skatebard, Love Nation and Dove Station in his own inimitable style. The lead take on Skatebard's "Confirmation Bias" is a particularly wonderful thing to behold, utilising a whole eight minutes to take flight into what the label quite aptly describe as a long lost Larry Levan remix of Manuel Gottsching's epic "E2 E4". Pioneerball & Lipelis - "Blinkin'"
Deep Sound Express - "Changes"
Klar & PF - "Circles"
Volta Cab - "Native Talk"
Review: Shimmering disco vibes abound as Pole Jam set sail with their second release. Keeping things local, we're introduced to a whole new legion of soviet creatives... Pioneerball & Lipellis lay down the 80s boogie flavours complete with crisp, rippling guitar licks, Deep Sound Express push both Italo and cosmic buttons with their heavily textured slab of melodic charm, Klar & PF get emotional with the soundtracky "Circles" while Volta Cab brings us to an emphatic climax with a guitar-twanging instrumental that wouldn't go amiss on a nudey flick... But that's another type of Pole Jam altogether.

Ice House
Review: Formerly part of Spectral Empire, George Thompson has latterly made a name for himself as a cosmic wizard of some repute under the Black Merlin guise. Debuting the project on Sir Wevvers' Bird Scarer label in 2012, subsequent Black Merlin transmissions have appeared on World Unknown, Mike Simonetti's New Jersey and the label arm of Dalston fashion boutique to the well-heeled LN:CC. He makes for a perfect individual to launch the somewhat shadowy Common Thread label, an operation that has left mere crumbs of information scattered across the internet. Typically for the Black Merlin, both tracks here are tinged with an element of the disco noire - "Ice House" in particular will please those seeking some contemporary Giallo Disco thrills.

Hristo - "Mandingo In Space"
Review: Canadian party crew Friendly Monster launch with this trio of left-sided disco business. Osmose's "Lonely Sound Slowly Dying" will score the most instant applause thanks to its Labi Saffire/Eminem sample. Dig deeper, however, and you'll find equal amounts of satisfaction from the far-away twangs and lolloping drums of "Rawdog" and the subverted disco strings, walloping bass gallops and Nile Rodgers style guitar shimmers on "Mandingo In Space". A very friendly release indeed... Grab it while you can!

Amore (instrumental)
Interestellaire (feat Emilie Farcy)
Review: An authentic Salsoul/Philly disco doublet from Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel, both "Amore" and "Interestellaire" are executed with such musicianship you could be convinced it's 1978 all over again. The former is a vibrant, groove-laden jam blessed with emphatic Barry White style vocals (courtesy of Andre Espeut) while the latter is a more cosmic, dreamier star-gazing joint peppered with meandering synths, harmonies and soaking wet bassline. Disco adventures really don't come much more faithful than this!

The Twilite Tone - "KHANDoit"
Bruce Ivery - "LULU"
Review: KHANDoit's hypnotic 100 BPM stomp does not adhere to genre or fickle trends, it simply bangs. The track begins with a sturdy kick and piano glissandos which recall Alice Coltrane's most transportative work. As the beat picks up, a creeping, filtered arpeggio enters its journey between rhythmic and downright nasty serving as the track's primary drama. Its a stunning intro to the new label GRIMY TRAX, a musical chameleon that can be dropped at the beginning, middle or end of the night. To complement the epic A-side, Grimy returns to the endlessly talented midwest and emerges with LULU, an original track by deejay/edit ace Bruce Ivery. The track seamlessly combines the Chicago acid sound with the clever vocal sampling of early 90s NYC house. The result is pure peak-time heat. Towards the end of the track, Ivery arranges brief melodic elements into a propulsive disco facsimile. This unexpected turn summarizes the philosophy of the new label and the way this small group of artists selects and makes records. It doesn't matter if it's house, disco, or techno, just make it GRIMY!

Review: You wait ages for the Tugboat Edits label to follow up their pair of long sold out debut releases and two arrive in swift succession! Described as "one of Chicago's most slept on remixers" Cratebug enters the Tugboat fray having previously impressed for dusty fingered outlets like Grimy Edits, Persnickety and most recently his own self titled label. Strictly for the DJs, Cratebug lays down two of his personal dancefloor weapons, one a side, and it's easy to see why the above description follows him around. The glistening, pumping proto-house vibes of the A Side complemented nicely by the erect funk of "Caveman".

Review: Following his recent appearance on Smokecloud, Sleazy returns to his Whiskey Disco home to celebrate their 25th release. As you'd expect from McQueen, it's an instant disco funk showdown laced with all manner of well dug sources and sounds. From the tight loop and lolloping bass of "Teeny Lovin'" to the more upfront glitter-sprinkled funk of "In The Year 2014" via an extended, head-turning cover of "Dancing In The Streets", each one of these cuts sparkles with Sleazy's skills and reminds us that Whiskey Disco are still very much on-point with every single release.
