The Music Sounds Better With 'Fro (Soft Rocks Adjustment)
Brothers (& Sisters) On The Slide (Soft Rocks Adjustment)
Review: Black Rox is back with 2 more sneaky Soft Rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked CD wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. Lead track "Music sounds better with 'fro" is a Stardust aping afro groove exploding into ecstatic, almost house, pianos. This one has been thoroughly road tested by dem Idjut Boys and Soft Rocks themselves... dancefloor detonation guaranteed. On the flip we get more righteous with "Brothers (& Sisters) On The Slide". Funky rollin' drums and a spoken word intro leading into a glorious anthemic song about struggling against the man.

Stay Cool (Al Usher remix)
Stay Cool (Al Usher dub)
This Time (Al Usher remix)
Times - Dub (Aphophenia dub)
Review: In 2011 Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright's original International Times LP saw a release on Emotional Rescue after originally hitting the shelves in 1982. The pair are now part of a remix EP by Misericord and one-time Internasjonal producer Al Usher, who supplies two remixes and a dub, while a spacey Aphophenia dub to the track "Times" has been added for extra measure. Usher's first rework of "Stay Cool" sounds like a 2013 meeting between a purple-clad Prince and a young Diana Ross, while the Dub version sees Prince's funk make way for Giorgio Moroder sound design. On the flip is an acoustic-leaning and inspirational "This Time", which could easily soundtrack a mesmeric highway-driving scene from Thelma & Louise.

Rayko - "Broadway"
Rayko - "All Around The Watchtower"
Em Vee - "Give Me Your Love"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: This time on transparent vinyl. Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko, with the Rare Wiri boss hogging the A Side. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

On My Way
Review: Long regarded as an esteemed crate digger and DJ, Kon's transformation into a fully fledged producer is complete with this very summer appropriate LP for BBE. It's been some time coming too, with Kon slowly revealing his production chops across a series of under the counter edits, remixes and a full EP for Soul Clap's label earlier this year. The eleven track On My Way unfurls with the kind of bump and groove we've come to expect from a Kon DJ set and also reveals him to be a somewhat talented song writer, teaming up with veteran house crooner George Levin, Ben Westbeech and Amy Douglas on several tracks ("Blow Me... A Kiss" with the latter is proper Disclosure territory) Matching bumping mid tempo cuts with some sultry jams (808 State) and outright disco burners ("Love Shine") makes On My Way a very impressive debut and perfect for the BBE label.

Strange Attractor (Peaking Lights remix)
Isle Of Tears (Tiago remix)
Higher Love (The Backwoods remix)
Review: ESP Institute excel at two things very important to labels; releasing interesting original music that spans feelings, tempos and genres yet fit into the overall aesthetical approach and enlisting some fine artists when it comes to remixes. Last year's self titled album from Land of Light, the collaborative project of ESP regular Johnny Nash and former Spectral Empire producer Kyle Martin perfectly encapsulated the former and this addendum 12" does the same for the latter. Peaking Lights, Tiago and The Backwoods all bring their respective styles to the fore in impressive fashion; in thee hands of Aaron "Peaking Lights" Coyes, "Strange Attractor" is transformed into luscious, dubby expanses nudged forth by a lazy motorik beat. Complementing this, Tiago gets his salsa on with a guitar flecked rendition of "Isle Of Tears" whilst Jap crew The Backwoods provide the defining dancefloor moment with their take on "Higher Love".

Free Love
Far West
Review: Edit champion Eddie C serves up two brand new original works for Red Motorbike and they both scream summertime vibes. "Free Love" is a kind of Doobie Brothers / Ojays fusion with a tight funk groove and emphatic soulful vocals that aren't dissimilar to Isaac Hayes's backing band. "Far West" is much more languid, deeper and more cosmic thanks to its crisp guitar plucks, sun-bleached bass thumps and overall Krautrocky synth washes. Hand-stamped and limited, this needs your attention right now!

Lune d'Afrique
Sympatry
Review: The cosmic partnership of Mat Anthony and Mark Jenkins has been a long and fruitful one. Last year's album As The Crow Flies still keeps on giving on every listen but that hasn't stopped them from serving up yet more exciting fresh material. "Fireflies" is the most upbeat of the set; twinkling with a Lindstrom style guitar arpeggio. "My Brother's Keeper" is much more languid in its nature, slouching on a silky smooth double bass line and majestic harp flutters. "Lune d'Afrique" is a mainline hit of harmonic heroism, conducted by an insistent kalimba. "Sympathy" closes the show on a wistful note; all pastoral guitars psychedelic moans. Beautiful.

So Strong
Bloody Mary
Downtown Nubian
Wrong Wire
Review: As with most, if not all Golf Channel releases, the dedication to presentation on finished copies means you can't ever feel too bad about missing out on the clutch of white labels the New York labels sends out in advance of release. That's certainly the case with the Downtown Nubian EP from Mind Fair, with some wonderfully psychedelic music to match the abstract art. Mind Fair is of course the collaboration between MEB's Ben Shenton and sometime Chicken Lipper Dean Meredith - we need an excel formula made to keep up with the latter's various projects - and after numerous 12"s on Rogue Cat and International Feel, the Downtown Nubian EP represents their finest work together to date. The wonderful "So Strong" is perhaps one of the finest contemporary disco cuts in recent memory thanks to the usage of vintage synths, live instrumentation and the sort of dynamic arrangements that few newcomers have a grasp of. That vocal sample is amazing too. A smorgasbord of sounds follow with the avant-garde primitive electronics of "Bloody Mary" acting as a weirded out interlude before the sumptuous jazz funk of the title track and the proto electronics of "Wrong Wire".

Neocolonialism Is Strong Tea
Obey A Man
Review: The identity of the mysterious Volcano Brothers remains unknown, but as long as they're serving up unique Afro funk edits like this, we're not going to complain. The title track is soaked in a sun-tinged highlife sound as we sass and sway from a light guitar-twanging intro to a more full bodied harmonic chorus into a beautiful analogue disco riff. "Obey A Man" is an instantly enduring Afro blues edit that follows a similar chord structure to Stevie Wonder's "Living For The City". Unique. Let's hope this volcano keeps erupting edits like these.

Be Loved (Richard Fearless remix)
Adolescent Sex (Andy Blake Live dub)
Turning (Scott Fraser Basement Riposte dub)
Blue Girls (Richard D Clouston remix)
Review: Part 3 of the Emotional Relish series sees Robi Insinna's work remixed by a quartet of British producers. Death In Vegas overseer Richard Fearless tackles "Be Loved" starting with an ethereal loop that builds on top of itself before the beat kicks in and the remix heads for the dark (leather) dancefloor. Mr Andy Blake channels the collective spirits of The Slits, The Pop Group and Killing Joke on his space echo laden remix of "Adolescent Sex" whilst Weatherall acolyte Scott Fraser returns to the Relish cause with a typically chugging rendition of "Turning" that has found favour from Croatia boat parties to the catwalks of Paris S/S 2013 no less (check YouTube for evidence). Cosey club founder Richard D Clouston slows down the tempo for a brooding, mind bending take on "Blue Girls".

MWI
Review: Graeme Clark returns to his Revenge persona, bringing a brand new imprint with him in the process. Looking back to his time with the Deportivo Street Team, there's a clear 'jamming' vibe present throughout this four tracker. Eschewing his disco tendencies, each of these four cuts are much more driving, deeper and, in the case of "MW1", downright techno-ish. Other highlights include the rich analogue synth hook on "Wreck My Love" and the dubbed out, heads-down Glasgow Underground style groove on "Lost Property".

Just Landed (Pete Herbert remix)
Review: It's been some three years since Phil Mison last graced the world with some original material as Cantoma, and fans will be glad to hear that the producer is preparing a third album for release in October. Some advance insight into how it will turn out is afforded with this limited 12" release of lead single Alive that features the silky vocal talents of Bing Ji Ling. The crooning alter ego of fuzzy headed Phenomenal Handclap Band member Quinn Luke, Bing Ji Ling is the perfect vocal foil to Mison's guitar flecked arrangement which is bound to feature on many an upcoming Balearic compilation. On the flip Mison's Reverso 69 partner in crime Pete Herbert delivers a glistening discoid take on "Just Landed".

You Should Know (Busy P & Boston Bun remix)
You Should Know (Homework Le Bain remix)

You Should Know (Le Family club remix)
Review: More gossamer smooth disco electro soul from Ed Banger's biggest lothario, "You Should Know" is a steamy mid tempo number that's just as rich in emotion as it is groove. As with all Breakbot numbers, there's a wealth of remixes to complement its romantic tendencies... Busy P and Boston Bun get all jacking and loopy, Homework Le Bain throw down a classic NY piano house version, The Swiss gets all rainbow Italo and Le Family serve up a slippery synth bass groove over some classic US garage beats. An impeccable package here... You should know this!

Sinned
Redeemed
Feel Alright?
Review: There's some serious attention to detail on this release. Myth Paradise's artwork is a sight to behold, and the audio is equally as overwhelming. Both "Sinned" and "Feel Alright" conjure up the smoky spirits of our stoner rock forefathers. The former does so with a laid back Balearic twang (and some cool Robert Plant style screams) while the latter goes all percussive, jazzy and hypnotic. "Redeemed", meanwhile, gets all gothic on our souls with big organ stabs over a nifty Afro beat rhythm.

The Hangover (JCG Seven Minutes Of Lustiness)
I Did You (JCG 70s Rub)
All Around The World (JCG Vinyl Touch Up)
Mental Chains (JCG acid mix)
Review: Four slick edits served up on a pink marbled vinyl... Gavri has done himself proud on this one. Rather than giving himself grazed knuckles from over-zealous crate digging, he's opted to edit four pretty well known tracks, contemporising each of them with his trademark tweaks. His percussive twists on Touch's "Love Hangover" add plenty of drive while "I Did You" sees him throwing Demis Roussos into a cosmic loop never to return. Elsewhere we find Voyage's "I Love You Dancer" being respectfully retouched with subtlety but the highlight is "Mental Chains" wherein Howard Jones's "New Song" gets smothered in a sexy coat of acid. Awesome.
