Mind Your Head
Jeff (dub)
Around You Go
2 Nights In Armenia
ArpB
Review: After his Kinfolk released collab with Otologic's Nick Murrary, Kris Baha makes a welcome return to his Power Station creation. A versatile five track EP that will get you through the night, one pictures Yello's virgin ketamine experiments on 'Mind Your Head' before 'Jeff' comes to the party with his mad professor dub, giving you whiplash with its belting beats and crashing guitar stabs. Originally designed as an hour long opening score for the namesake Melbourne club night, 'Around You Go' is an edited warm up tool, the crossroad between Dusseldorf and Elettronica Meccanica. If issued in 1983, '2 Nights in Armenia' would have lived on as a Cosmic classic while 'ArpB' is the listeners' exit music, a fork hanging from the power socket.

Good Inside (7:14)
Come Back Home (original disco version) (6:27)
4006 (5:57)
Review: Since launching in 2012, the Razor N Tape label has been one of the edit scene's most consistent labels. Along the way, they've released killer reworks from some impressive names, including Dimitri From Paris, Ron Basejam and Late Night Tuff Guy. Their latest high-profile recruit is Glaswegian disco digger and all round nice guy Al Kent. The three cuts here are a little tougher and more house-friendly than his often purist extensions, but still retain the loose, celebratory feel of his vintage source material. Choose between the soulful brilliance of "Come Back Home (Original Disco Version)", the low-slung, filter-and-delay boasting bounce of the thumping "Good Inside", and the no-nonsense disco-funk shuffle of "4006".

Something Special (6:12)
Review: Fresh off a 12" appearance on Dirt Crew alongside Harry Wolfman, Manchester-based DJ and producer Loz Goddard is back on a solo flex with the Drunken Monk EP for the Reserve sublabel from NYC edit crew Razor N Tape. Four tracks deep, this 12" has that slinky, glossy feel to it that sounds just right on Razor N Tape, with the Love Unlimited Orchestra does disco house shuffle of "Lovin'" the pick of the A-side cuts. Flip over and "Moovish" sees young Loz veer off into heavily filtered house territory, throwing in what sounds like some nifty RAMP sampling while he's at it. The appropriately-titled "Something Special" rounds out the 12" in fine style with a bit of a French Touch.

Bembe Segue - "Sun On My Back" (3:40)
Review: In recent years, former broken beat and nu-jazz producer Volcov has become better known as a crate digger, record collector and re-editor. BBE has harnessed these skills for From The Archive, a compilation of - in the DJ/producer's own words - "music that I've discovered that I thought would be interesting to share". It's a typically deep, soulful and varied affair, beginning with the horizontal jazz-funk bliss of Are & Be before variously touching on jazzy, soft-focus U.S house (a superb Chez Damier rework of The Urban Cru), obscure boogie (TGB), crossover disco-funk (Hot Quisine), and floor-friendly broken beat (Shokazulu, Bembe Segue). Happily, the collection also contains a trio of previously unheard re-edits from the man himself.

Thrun Dha Tha (Bottin remix)
Leipzeig
Review: "Micronation is the Frank Agrario's new label. After some key releases on Internasjonal, Tom Tom Disco and Maxi Discs Frank decided to start his own vinyl label. Micronation is a declaration of independence, Frank makes his own rules, passports and stamps, while music is the currency. 02. Percussion, deep bases and Frank's trademark dubby dealys are all there. Bottin provides a killer rmx ready to destroy any dancefloor. Early support from Soul Clap, Jimpster, Munk, Swayzak, Mammarella and Thomas Von Party.""

Frasier - "Into My Dub" (9:52)
Eddie C - "From Afar" (4:58)
Koosh - "Way Out If It Man" (4:22)
Review: The red engine's revving once again, and it's big enough to seat three men. Chief label racer Eddie C lays down a cosmic strut of eastern proportions with kaleidoscope whirls of kicks, pads and sitars. Joining him are familiar riders (Koosh) and new (Fraiser). The former lays down a bad trip DJ tool, all highs and cries and strange dubby textures. The latter provides the centrepiece: a chugging stately groove that opens up into pure sunshine soul when you least expect it.

Breakin' In Space (4:06)
Switch (4:57)
Review: Veteran duo In Flagranti are on board to help kick off freshly minted LA label Street Meat in the right style, with their Radiation Level 12" rife with the kind of deftly edited disco sleaze one demands from Sasha Crnobrnja & Alex Gloor. Proceedings kick off with "Radiation Level," a looped up DJ tool that works wonders with just a few key elements (funk guitar licks and rolling bass lines), whilst "Freakin' Time" is more redolent of the vintage In Flagranti found on Codek in the midst of the last decade. The flip side kicks off with the classic electro boogie sound of "Breakin' In Space" and closes out with the roller disco vibes of "Switch". Nice start to life for Street Meat.

Ron Bacardi - "Track 4" (5:52)
Review: The last libertango in Essex: incognito techno producers Paul Mac and Ben Sims don their Jorge Zamacona and Ron Barcadi aliases to take a side each on the latest WBW instalment. Jorge takes the lead with deeply cosmic calypso twist on one of Grace Jones' most well-known cuts before diving deep into tribal percussive wizardry on his second track. Flip for two neat shots of Barcadi... First up is a turbo-charged twist on Thelma Houston's "I'm Here Again". It's backed with loopy shake-up of Constellation Orchestra's "Perfect Love Affair". Tight.

A Night With The Boys (Trail Of Destruction dub) (7:22)
Review: Mark Seven's superb Parkway label returns, taking a first step into the year with a sound that's skipping winter and spring and squares its silk synth focus on the summer. This time round it's Trey Risque whose "A Night With The Boys" features an instantly catchy hook worthy of Yazoo which is given more weight by the detailed counter melodies and riffs that fill all the right playful spaces around Nikki's Kathy Diamond style delivery. For a leerier night out with the chaps, head for the Trail Of Destruction Dub.

Blinded (By The Qualities Of You) (4:59)
25 Hours (edit) (4:29)
Review: 14 Karat Soul's Erwin Lanier Junior laid down this 45" in 1980 and it's been sought after ever since, often passing hands for hundreds among collectors. "Blinded (By The Qualities Of You)" struts with an insistent kicks, lavish strings and fluttering horns while Lanier slips between a deeper tenor and Gorrie-style falsettos. "24 Hours" shows off Lanier's sense of upbeat urgency with epic layers of backing vocals and a dynamic that tips a strong nod to Whitfield and Strong's songwriting style. You can tell why this has been in such high demand.

John Forde - "Don't You Know Who Did It" (3:28)
Review: The RDY series rolls on it its 28th edition, presenting three more edits that may or may not have been tweaked, reworked and expanded on by the great Ron Hardy during his time behind the decks at Chicago's legendary Muzic Box. First up is Tullio De Piscopo's classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)" which has been edited in recent times by both Theo Parrish and Volcov; the original is a fine track which will delight any dancefloor, but then so will this edit. Face down, Eberhard Schoener's synth pop hook up with The Police, "Why Don't You Answer" is given an arpeggio boost, whilst John Forde's '79 disco funker "Don't You Know Who Did It" is smoothed out for the finale.

This love of music and culture helps define the sound that is Chi-Town Gumbo. In underground disco circles, US crate digger Rahaan Young is considered something of an unsung hero. Ain't Gonna Last (4:41)
Review: Straight up disco soul from Minneapolis troupe Freakway who - according to legend - are based deep in Tokyo underground disco scene. "Hot Touch" comprises tight musicianship (especially between the bass and drums) with great precision vocals that really shine with articulation and wry humour in a way that's not dissimilar to Cameo. "Ain't Gonna Last" slows the vibe right down with a more soulful boogie touch where full emphasis should be paid to the bass that's fluid and funky enough to make Larry Graham blush. Tight.

Tiny Islands (Ray Mang Eel Pie rebake) (6:50)
Review: Patrizio Cavaliere doesn't release music as often as we'd like. But when he does, it's a serious piece of work... "Tiny Islands" is a dense piece of psychedelic-tinged, Italo-referenced, cosmically charmed disco that's reminiscent of the likes of Daniele Baldelli, Silver City and Bottin. Funky but star-gazing, weighted but floaty, it ticks all the right boogie boxes. As does Ray Mang's remix; a little chunkier in the drum department, a little fatter in the bass department, it's a respectful re-touch that refuses to trounce on the soul of the original.

Review: Given his love of all things classic disco and classic house, it is somewhat surprising to find this Don't Need To Know 12" is Jacques Renault's debut release on Endless Flight. Sure the Lets Play House man has previously contributed remixes to the Mule sublabel, but Renault and Endless Flight seem like such a match made in heaven, it's odd they've not aligned before. Regardless, this 12" falls snugly into the Endless Flight canon of dependable house DJ tools blessed with a touch of disco classicism with the title track a hook up with Morgan Wiley that comes in "Beach" and "NY Strip" mixes. Down below, Renault goes solo and lays on the searing disco funk hard with "Nutte 'n Honey".

Love Money (Morplen edit) (8:24)
Review: Another week, another new re-edit imprint makes its' debut. Manning the controls for the first Space Disco release are Italian nu-disco expert DJ Rocca, and occasional GAMM contributor Moplen. The former handles the A-side, first unfurling the killer, dubbed-out instrumental jam "Groove It To Your Body" (think undulating disco funk grooves, heavyweight percussion fills and Paul Simpson style delays), before delivering a solid rearrangement of much-edited Jammers electrofunk jam "Be Mine Tonight". On the flip, Moplen's "Love Money" offers a succulent, stretched-out tweak of a piano heavy disco-funk jam with just the right amount of intergalactic delays and deep space reverb.

Magic Of The Funk (3:47)
Review: Freshman funk troupe straight out of Chicago, Wings Of Sunshine make their debut with the You Got Me Now 7" for the Star Creature label. The title track sits snugly in the funk crawlspace between Plantlife and Funkadelic, all fly falsettos and serious slap bass. "Magic Of The Funk" jumps in the yacht for some slower '80s boogie fun. Instant summer on wax: with its majestic synths and smouldering tempo, the sound on this is only going to improve on this as the months get warmer. An impressive debut.

Rainbow Road (6:21)
Review: Glasgow's Optima Music is, in our books, one of the hottest properties in dance music, thanks to the refined A&R skills and encyclopaedic knowledge of founder JD Twitch. The latest OM Disco Plate sees the return of Noo, a project from the minds of Christophe 'Daze' Dasen and Sami Liuski, two house heads who are masters at the funky side of the genre. "Kabuki" is an odd little banger, indeed, a pearl of track that doesn't quite fit the disco classification thanks to its deranged barrage of melodies and sci-fi harmonics, with the same applying to the quirky, playful Daft-Punk-style rhythm that is "Super Mario". You could call "Rainbow Road", the final piece, a beatless progression of the latter, a gorgeous groove made solely of airy, delayed folds of sonics.

Phanareega (6:15)
Review: Verona-based Blend It boss and main resident at Roots Corte Radisi, Patrick Gibin dusts off his TwICE guise for a washed-out slice of spacey house music. Loose organic drums and cymbal-splashes create a very natural bedrock for the fluttering arpeggios, bulbous analogue bassline and Clara Hill's hazy, soft-focus vocals. For added spatial awareness Italian vibe maestro Volcov injects dynamic chasms into the blend with ghostly vocal echoes and hypnotic conga rolls before Gibin closes the show with the psychedelic escapade that is "Phanareega"; all Saunderson pads but King Britt drums, it pays homage to the deepest sources. TwICE as nice.
