Macao (4:42)
Spanish Fly (5:48)
Review: The Waffles label arrived last September with a much loved 12" that spanned the discotheque spectrum and had plenty of people salivating, no doubt thanks to some prolonged plays at Jim Murphy and the Dewaele's Despasico. The Soulwax brothers being Belgian has led many to speculate if Waffles is their work, cos you know the country is famous for them... A second helping of Waffles is here and boy is it tasty. Up top, the sleazy "Macao" stomps out on a mid-tempo bump, whilst "Spanish Fly" glides along happily with an absolutely killer bassline. The resident disco digger at Juno is off today, so we're not so sure about the source material here, but Waffles have struck gold once more.

Review: John Morales - one half of the beyond-legendary production team M+M - finally delivers the new Club Motown series that began in 2014. The last 12" focused on divas but here we're celebrating two of the funkiest names in funk soul; Rick James and The Temptations. From the epic 11 minute reprise of "Standing On The Top" to the equally extensive shake up of "Brick House" via the brand new arrangement of "Big Time", it's another collection that only Morales could concoct. The stomping percussion-heavy into on the vocal dub of "Big Time" is impossible to sniff at too...

The Silver Rider - "Never Stop" (5:49)
Review: Detroit's Pontchartrain teams up with NYC's The Silver Rider for an all American, all house and disco EP for the lovely Whiskey Disco stable - what more could you possibly want on a Thursday morning, just before the weekend? Pontchartrain takes over the A-side with two slick and sexy disco nuggets, the first a groovy soulful piece in "Work It Alright", and the second a filtered disco-house hybrid named "What You Doing To Me". On the B-side, The Rider goes in Pepe Bradock mode with "Muzik", whereas "Never Stop" is slower, jazzier, and perfectly sun-kissed. Beauts.

Scared (10:42)
Plastic People (9:04)
Review: Yes, it's time for another slice of Mark E(dit) goodness on his own E Versions label, and every time one of these bad boys has always been on point. Number 6 in the series certainly doesn't disappoint, and the soulful waves of "Scared" are so close in line with the sort of house we're digging at the moment, that we've been playing it for hours on the Juno HQ turntable. "Plastic People", surely an ode to the legendary London club, takes house as a structure, but goes much deeper and wilder thanks to elements of jazz, funk and deep, sweltering soul music. Mark E never ceases to please and amaze simultaneously.

Sequence Of Movement (Frank Booker edit) (6:51)
Review: Frank Booker returns for his second outing on the evergreen Disco Deviance label offering up another pair of glorious disco reinventions seen through a raver's eye. "World Of Make Believe" is a fancy, down the line disco churner with plenty of strings, a hard punch, and a fabulous but of vocal riding over those kick drums; "Sequence Of Movement", instead, is all funky and down on the floor, boasting a sublimely phased out guitar serving as one mighty, groovy, delicious bassline. Yes please Frank.

New York's Movin' (7:42)
New York's Movin' (instrumental) (7:55)
Review: Big clappy hands, bigger vocals, even bigger groove; "New York's Moving" has been one of Danny Krivit's keystone selections since it was released in 1981 and it's not hard to see why... The guitar line glides from left to right, keeping the bold elements all in check: the lavish keys, the rolling percussion and the soul-churning vocals. Complete with full instrumental, there's heaps of fun to be had with this classic.

Review: After five years of breathing new life into forgotten Eastern European music, The Very Polish Cut-Outs is taking its' final bow. Pleasingly, this fifth and final installment of the label's vinyl sampler series is packed to the rafters with high-grade material. MIod kicks things off with "Kiedy Bylem Malym Chlopcem", a rolling, dancefloor-friendly rework of a killer blues-rock/AOR disco killer from Polish bluesman Tadeusz. Fast-rising Moscovite Beard In Dust steals the show with a killer interpretation of Polish B-boy fave "Biala Sowa, Biala Dama, Bialy Kruk", before Daniel Drumz heads into warmer waters with the sun-kissed loveliness of "Na Kolana Pastuszkowie". Another superb EP is completed by two tactile touch-ups of obscure, evocative gems that sound like long lost Balearic classics.

MFSB - "Mysteries Of The World" (6:09)
Francine Mcgee - "Delerium" (7:51)
Review: Tokyo's Edit & Dub Recordings seem to put a lot of thought into their releases. Their first two 12" singles boasted unreleased scalpel works from Tee Scott and Larry Levan respectively. Their latest missive is titled NYC 1980 Special Disco Version, and contains a pair of subtle period reworks of popular club smashers of the time. The A-side boasts a superb revision of MFSB's Philadelphia International classic "Mysteries Of The World", which wisely concentrates on the loose-but-tight groove and the original's deep, life-affirming synth lines. On the flip, Francine McGee's wild "Delirium" gets the scalpel treatment, with the un-credited editor making merry with the original's intense electronic piano solos, clipped guitars and stretched-out synthesizer lines.

Hooked On Your Love (instrumental) (5:59)
Hooked On Your Love (Basement Tape mix) (6:10)
Review: City Of Dreams' boogie, soul and funk reissues rarely disappoint. Predictably, this is another killer. Gina's "Hooked On Love" remains something of a delicious oddity: a cover of the Leroy Burgess-boasting Aleem classic of the same name, sung by mysterious vocalist Gina, and produced by the Aleem brothers themselves. While their original version was a surging, piano-heavy stomper blessed with Burgess's trademark vocals, the Gina cover re-casts it as a breezy, synthesizer-heavy boogie/ pop hybrid in the manner of very early Madonna recordings. It's a fine record, and comes accompanied with not only the superb original instrumental, but also a previously unheard "Basement Tape" version rescued from the archives.

Shitan (part 1) (3:09)
Shitan (part 2) (4:03)
Review: A near-mythical release from the Italian composer/bassist/karate don Pino Presti, Shitan was a one-off project in 1977. Slow, pensive, full of tension and loaded with detailed cinematic elements, it still sounds forward-thinking today. No surprises that the original 12"s regularly go for hundreds. Madly the long version never made it to the original 12" so this is the first time the full five minute version has been available. As if a repress wasn't enough reason to jump on this!

No Es Computable (feat Ric Piccolo) (5:28)
Super Magic Woman (4:26)
Anima (4:47)
Review: There's a roving international feel to Passport To Paradise that is befitting of the label's name, with their first two releases featuring the scalpel work of Italy's Beppe Loda and Nemas Problemas from Malmo crate diggers Wildlife Records. This third 12" sees the focus remain on Sweden and invites Frisbee Records boss Albion to sift through his archive of secret weapons. Lead cut "Kompression" sets the tone, a twinkling electro disco excursion with kosmische overtones that is positively spine tingling. Ric Piccolo and Albion team up for "No Es Computable," a deliciously wonky European number that features strange vocodered vocals and even stranger synth work. On the flip, "Super Magic Woman" offers some straight up vocal disco grooving, whilst "Anima" heads off into Pat Cowley does proto-house territory.

Feeling Good (3:43)
Land Of Leaping No No (Ha Ka Cha Ka Ha Ka Cha Ka) (3:14)
Review: Devilishly rare Philly soul funk from 75: Santiago were a Mandrill off-shoot headed up by Neftali Santiago, they only released one official single and it was rumoured to have only been pressed a few thousand times. Which is crazy considering how beautifully funky these originals are: "Feeling Good" lives up to its name with such positivity, harmony and soulful band orchestration (including some of the most beautiful jazz flutes of the era). "Land Of The Leaping No", meanwhile, is a raw carnal funk jam that's as sweet and sweaty as the original pressings are expensive.

Antidote (4:58)
The Plot Thickens While Pangea Cracks (7:22)
Flying Knives (3:59)
Review: While Jeroen Warmenhoven has delivered plenty of material of late under the DJ Overdose alias, it's been some four years since he last explored more Italo-flavoured pastures under the Model Man guise. This return for Bordello A Parigi is, then, well overdue. It's naturally rather good, with lead cut "Peeking Through The Blinds" - a raging, camp-as-Christmas Italo-disco banger straight out of the Rotterdam school - hitting hard from the off. The acid-flecked "Burning Bed" and skittering EBM cheeriness of "Antidote" could also be considered tried-and-tested dancefloor smashers, while the slower, rhythmically broken "Flying Knives" is one of the most cheerfully positive things you'll hear all year. Best of all, though, is the deep, picturesque and wonderfully slow title track.

Tight Spot (5:37)
Ol' Funky Music (5:44)
Review: Like many producers, Martin Hayes has built his career on the twin pursuits of original, sample-heavy house production and floor-friendly re-edits. This 12" sees him reaching for the scalpel once more, delivering a quartet of killer cut-jobs for Brooklyn's mighty Razor 'N' Tape. He begins with the rubbery bass, punchy horns and sweaty disco percussion of "Get On Down", before offering a perfect balance between low-slung strut and epic, string-laden brilliance on the even better "Make Me Dance". Flip for the percussion-heavy disco-funk workout "Tight Spot", and the atmospheric funk breaks, glistening guitars and spacey delays of EP closer "Ol' Funky Music".

Junko - "Communicate" (Yume Hash) (5:06)
Review: Last Records continue their countdown from 100 as newcomer Yume offers up another pair of Japanese edits for their sixth release. Fixing a stare on the glittering brilliance of the disco ball, Yume's reshape of Rie Nakahara's late '70s cut "Yoru" sees delayed clavichord dance around sweeping Philly strings and infectious conga breaks, lifting the dreamy diva vocals way above cloud nine. Down under, Junko Yagami's "Communicate" is given the full edit treatment from Yume with hypnotic loops, club ready fx and a driving sequence. These Last 12"s don't tend to stick around on the shelves at Juno and we don't see the situation changing with Yume's contribution!

OOFT! - "Don't Go Near Water" (6:24)
P-SOL - "Set Me Free" (7:08)
Review: As with previous Wall of Fame releases, Night Shift is an all-star affair, with a quartet of producers each delivering a track that blurs the boundaries between re-edits, remixes and original production. Trujillo kicks things off with the gentle nu-disco breeze of "Midnight Plane", where soft-focus disco beats and eyes-closed pianos are joined by an undulating electronic bassline and reheated chords. The Silver Rider dives into filter-heavy disco-house territory on the bumpin' "Crown Royal", while Ooft recruits Highlife/Huntleys & Palmers man Esa Williams for the deep disco meets deep house warmth of EP highlight "Don't Go Near Water". Finally, P-Sol necks a fist-load of happy pills and reclines with a pile of lazy, sun-kissed jazz-funk records on the sleepy "Set Me Free".

Groove (Larry Yaw mix) (8:07)
Winners (demo mix) (5:47)
Review: The subject of many bootlegs and illicit pressings, Larry Levan, Brodie Williams and Kofi Morny's mid 80s funk/proto Man Friday project enjoys a certified reissue from King Street who first pressed this in 2003. Larry's shake-up of "Groove" is a salubrious boogie joint with slippery synths and squeaky clean elements. The demo mix of "Winners" is equally impressive. Arguably better than the original's brash 80s production, complete with standard horn solo, the demo is much looser, subtler and softer with the vocals' sentiment hitting much harder as a result.

Review: "A side brings Rudman's finest house sounds , for this heavy dancefloor produced track, but in the same time moody and balearic , with a strong synth bassline that easely took control of the vibe and transformed it to a strong dance effect. For the B - side Imogen meets NuNorthern Soul artist Dos Palos , with a slower tempo track , with Ilija Rudman's instrumental stripped down mix of the Lady Of The West Way . This remix sounds and could easily be integrated in any motion picture end having that powerful vibe of goodbye ."

The Ex-Priest (6:03)
The Necklace (6:18)
Review: By Giallo Disco standards, Blood Meridian is something of a curveball. Produced by debutant Ketsueki Sakuru, it cleverly combines the label's usual synthesizer horror influences with percussion programming that draws inspiration from the throbbing worlds of EBM and New Beat. It's a blend that works wonderfully well, from the bubbling, rising synthesizer lines and hypnotic rhythms of "The Judge", to the cacophonous, slo-mo throb of "The Necklace" (all tactile chords and ricocheting drum hits), via the dark pulse of smack-jacker "The Judge". Arguably best of all, though, is "The Kid", which sounds like a pitched-down hook-up between John Carpenter and Nitzer Ebb.

Laid Back - "White Horse" (5:48)
Review: Ah yes, it's time for another trio of hazardous edits by the legendary Ron Hardy - may this God of a man rest in peace - part of a long dynasty of music that he's left behind in his aftermath. This time, we have a re-up of Steve Miller Band's "Macho City", warped and moulded by Hardy into a twisted boogie bomb that'll get you down on the ground. The two edits on the flip are Methusalem's "Robotism", a high-energy disco bomb with an electronic edge, and "White Horse" by Laid Back, a heads-down, dubbed-out take on the emblematic original anthem. Recommended, but that goes without saying.

Review: Later in the year, Golf Channel is set to release Orange Cloud Versions, a set containing brand new remixes and covers of obscure early '80s material by post-punk, blue-eyed-soul bluesman Spike Wolters. The headline attraction of this teaser 12" is Justin Vandervolgen's brilliant, club-friendly tweak of Chris "Sexican" Munoz's remix of "Sometimes", which layers Wolters' impassioned vocal over a thumping, house-tinged dub-disco groove. The rest of the EP contains more obscure, rarely heard Wolters material from the archives, including the evocative, out-there bliss of "Seebelebbad", and the tactile, late night, cosmic soul of "You Can Do It". Stellar stuff, all told.
