Never Seen The Dunes (7:20)
Aura (5:22)
Indecis (6:30)
The Quiet Before The Red Stop (5:06)
Review: It's fair to say Khijda's debut EP on Especial was one of the highlights of the label to date. Mustafa - in original form and remixed to distraction by Timothy J Fairplay - became the soundtrack for many a Summer party, while Abul was perfect for those deeper late night
afters.
This time though we present a stand alone 4 track EP of original music so that Khijda's sound can be full explored. Starting with the title cut, the duo aim right for the dance floor, mixing throbbing live bass, guitar and a touch of Eastern mystic vocals that twist and rise higher and higher.
This is followed by the deep dub vibes of Aura. Coming on as if the idjut Boys had relocated to Istanbul, the bass rumble and tripped out fx are overlaid with strings, xylophone and even a nice does of (more) cowbell that is full of funk and ass moving swing.
On the flip is where things take a warped turn with Indecis. It's incessant rhythm and
Eastern flavour, mixed with 80's style cut up vocals, take the sounds championed by Baris K and Acid Arab to new (and bazar) heights.
Finally then, the EP comes down with the beautiful 'Balearic' grooves of The Quiet And The Red Stop. With a nod to their roots Khidja again forge their own journey, creating and carving out a sound of their own that is unique and at the same time compelling. Watch the skies.

Kick Intrusion (7:58)
Electric Razor (6:13)
Engineer Salute (6:38)
Now We Eat (7:27)
Review: Andrew Weatherall's cultish Bird Scarer label is awoken from a two year slumber to introduce the refined production talents of Duncan Gray. Owner of the Tici Taci label, Gray's multi instrumental skills have been on display in several under-rated acts over the years (anyone remember The Sons Of Slough? That was him) and for his Bird Scarer debut, The No Safe Word EP, he delivers on the low slung sleaze count and then some. "Kick Infusion" is acid house jack dragged down to a sluggish 100bpm whilst "Electric Razor" is a searing low set techno ode to every lazy man's preferred method of shaving. "Engineer Salute" could easily be mistaken for a Tim Fairplay cut so feels right at home on Bird Scarer, whilst "Now We Eat" has probably been caned at A Love From Outer Space.

Review: The seventh edition of KON's Star Time series shines some light on one of Michael Jackson's lesser know moments, a 1978 cover version of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" which is presented here in two differing versions. Kon's original "Who Shot Ya" version displays the Boston man's sublime editing skills in all their glory and just wait for that Nile Rogers guitar line to come in around the 5 minute mark. Thatmanmonkz takes care of the remix, steering proceedings into housier territory whilst there is a Jacko bonus to close out the 12". On "Inhuman Nature" Jacko's vocal floats out over a '90s style production from Kon that will please fans of SWV.

Review: Following his stunning "Southern Breeze" EP on Aficionado, the shadowy Vision Of Panorama lets loose with a sandy-toed Balearic opus on Music For Dreams. Stately shiny vibes throughout as we range from the slow-motion fretless bass bliss of "Reef" to the unabashed 80s synth boogie of "Patches Of Light" by way of the horizon-set yacht jam "Port De Soller". With a sprightly piano-laced twist on the title track by Jex Opolis thrown in for extra measure, Music For Dreams has delivered something particularly special right here.

Can I Come Over & Play With You Tonight (4:18)
Hot (For Your Love) (4:21)
Review: Jeanie Tracey's "Can I Come & Play With You Tonight?" should probably be considered something of an in-demand gem, seeing as copies of the original 1983 12" version go for significant sums online. Happily, the crate diggers behind the admirable Athens of the North imprint have decided to give it the reissue treatment, giving all of the chance to own a copy. The original is a sweet boogie killer, with Tracey's smooth vocal riding a backing track heavy with vintage synthesizers, snappy drum machine hits and elastic live bass. Flip for "Hot (For Your Love)", an end-of-night slow dance number smothered in evocative strings and Tracey's tear-jerking vocal.

Review: Rothmans are back with release 9 of their ever growing vinyl only, retro football themed label and this time paying homage to the silky smoth Italian Maestro Paolo Rossi we have Berlin based Israli outfit Naduve. The debut release from this Naduve & friends finds Rothmans bringing another new dimension to their already beautifully diverse rosta with another unique record. 2 original tracks and in support on remix duties they welcome Manpower & The Claydermans to the Rothmans family. The first track Miracles From Erdine sees the guys bringing that slowed down chuggy sound that Rothmans are well renowned for whilst Nein ups the tempo a little more with a fat italo beat whilst both remaining to bring with them a unique sound oozes the Tel Aviv vibe. Bringing up the rear we have Manpower doing his thing the only way he knows how with a classic Manpower take on the track that enevatibley ends up kicking as hard as a Paolo Rossi penalty, and The Claydermans finish off the record with what can only be described as an absolute banger. If anyone wondered what the connection is between Tel Aviv & Berlin then I dont think you will hear a record this year that exemplifies it better than this . Rothmans score the winner yet again!

Feather Bed For Hatchback (7:18)
Charlie (dub) (7:02)
Review: Everyone's favourite edits label named after a US bathroom company, American Standard, return with one of their infrequent forays through the disco, funk and assorted musical curios that time forget with San Francisco's The Dream Chimney behind the buttons. The two tracks on Dream Chimney Dubs feel perfectly tailored for the early moments of a night, when the curious souls are starting to ponder a move onto the dancefloor. The quite delightful "Feather Bed For Hatch Back" should coax them into doing just that, a gently uplifting cosmic number with a subtle chug and a hint of Sakamoto to it. On the flip "Charlie Dub" is a wide eyed Balearic cut that sounds even better with the tempo nudged down to around -6.

Pope Naked The First (Rob & Ricky acid rerub) (6:16)
Review: Having previously impressed with a trio of EPs on Tim Paris's Marketing Music label, Sex Judas (a duo comprising an "anonymous Norwegian producer and his trusted sidekick Ricky") pops up on Optimo Music. The duo's contribution to the ever-growing Disco Plate series is a deep disco delight, with the unpronounceable A-side delivering a delicious blend of loose, organic instrumentation, stoner-rock influences, cheeky pianos and eccentric, Mungolian Jet Set style vocals. The comparisons with Pal Nyhus and company are even greater on "Pope Naked The First", which picks up the pace via rubbery slap bass, spacey synths and classic electrofunk touches. That track gets a twisted disco-acid remix, too, a trick that the Mungs have played on more than one occasion.

Calm Before The Storm (6:34)
Review: Italian upstart Kiu D serves up a three course banquet of high cholesterol edits. For starters we're presented with a heart-attack inducing deep fried platter of greasy synths as Rocker's Revenge's "Walking On Sunshine" gets the full fat treatment. For mains we're served "Disco Brains"; the audio equivalent of a 20oz steak, it has the juiciest, rarest boogie bassline this side of Manhattan. For dessert we're treated to the sweetest of treats as the smooth-yet-unrelenting "Calm Before The Storm" ebbs and flows softly thanks to lavish piano strokes and a peppering of syrupy jazz elements. What a feast. What a debut release.

Review: Self-styled "continental disco king" Albion Venables is renowned for the sheer depth of his record collection, which includes much obscure material picked up in flea markets across the globe. Here the Swedish producer returns to the warm bosom of Macadam Mambo with four more killer re-edits of weird, wonderful and undeniably exotic gems. Opener "Pyramids" is a fantastic tweak of a chugging, new wave era Arabic synth-pop gem, while "Kabala" sounds like a Turkish take on the post-punk-meets-industrial-funk disco wonkiness of Section 25 or A Certain Ratio. There's more snaking sax and throbbing electronic low-end on the superb "Mambo Steel Introducing GNTRRM", before "Seara" delivers a refreshing blast of off-kilter electronic funk.

Review: Arriving on a most luscious tone of red vinyl, the latest Editorial 12" comes from regular contributors Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee and will prove to be of much use to any jobbing disco selectors out there. Up first, "Shake It Loose" finds Ed and Dee teasing out a cooing vocal sample and some loving Philly strings over a bumping disco beat whilst "House Shaker" sees them really working the delay and filter effects. Down below, "Endless Love" has a sultry '80s vibe to it with some silky vocals worthy of Curtis Mayfield and the lolloping grooves of "Sweet Love" more than live up to its name.

Review: Launched in late 2013, Paul Raffaele's Most Excellent Unltd has developed into a most unpredictable label, equally happy to facilitate more thunderous techno from Phil Moffa being released as it is to coax Mr K edits out of Danny Krivit. The label's first point of business for 2015 swings the focus on the edit talents of Japanese selectors Mori Ra and DJ Ground, two heads with deep knowledge of their country's musical heritage (here's a tip: check Mori Ra's Japanese Breeze mix series). Anyway Ghost Guide is a fine edit 12", veering from thunderous psyche drum work outs to slinky proto house via sultry 80s sax pop workouts and cosmic jazz. This one is likely to remain in many a record box!

Review: 18 years after making their debut on Paper Recordings, Jim Baron, Chris Todd and Danielle Moore show no signs of flagging. While it's been a while since their last studio album - the 2020 Vision released When We On in 2011 - they've hardly been shirking, complimenting a punishing schedule of live and DJ gigs with regular studio sessions. Walk Talk Dance Sing, the band's eight full-length proper, sees them in fine form, delivering warm, rich and hugely enjoyable blends of deep house, disco, boogie, soul and funk. There are few surprises, but you wouldn't expect any. Instead, the 11 tracks focus on what they do best, and few do it better. Not everything is quite as magical as recent single "Witch Doctor", but highlights are pleasingly plentiful.

Review: The ink has barely dried on Cosmic Pint Glass's first 12", and they're already treating us to a similarly impressive follow-up. This one comes from Tony G, whose 2013 release Simple Dreams continues to get major rotations. The deep house producer drops two contrasting versions of "Plesiosauria"; an excellent original version built around sparse, rolling tribal drums and ghostly melodies, and "Alone With The Sea", an ambient interpretation that focuses more on field recordings and melancholic synthesizer lines. Running Back and Beats In Space man Philip Lauer provides the flipside remix, turning the bittersweet original into a synthesizer-heavy chunk of disco-tinged deep house bliss.

Only 500 of these were manufactured and Juno are pretty happy to get our mitts on a limited quantity. This is Moton so you know the edits are going to be quality from start to finish, but listening through the six tracks on offer the frazzled cosmic electro funk of "Exotiq" and the deep Curtis style orchestration of "Man's Lifespan" are particularly special. One to cherish!

Review: While he's steadfastly refused to get railroaded into pursuing one particularly style - variously dropping tracks influenced by disco, deep house, Italo, electronica, Balearica and synth-pop - there's always been a melodic breeziness to Philip Lauer's solo work. This trait is, unsurprisingly, one of the most noticeable things about Borndom, his second full-length. Bright, emotive and expansive, the album's 13 tracks flit between styles - those mentioned, plus acid house, ambient, deep electro, and even a dash of eyeliner-clad new wave revivalism (see Jasnau hook-up "ESC") - but hang together thanks to regular use of crystal clear synthesizer melodies and hazy, touchy-feely chords.
