Je Na' (Mario Boncaldo original 1983 special mix)
Pagaia (Mario Boncaldo original 1983 special mix)
Review: Archeo Recordings is a reissue record label that regenerates old, lost, obscure (and forgotten) rare gems of Italian music of the 70s and 80s, and not only. All outputs are licensed by the artists and the vintage labels; audio tracks are remastered in their original form; the sleeves and center labels are graphically recreated for today but all based on the original images. Archeo would like to make the music available to a wider audience of collectors, DJs, music lovers of a forgotten time.
All releases are hand-numbered limited edition vinyl. The first 100 copies of each release are pressed in coloured vinyls. This first release is dedicated to the sought- mix "Je -na / Pagaia" by Tony Esposito 1983 - cult record and more and more "expensive" - which is a rarity of Afro-cosmic Italian music. A very popular piece at the time and fortunately returned in vogue today thanks to many followers, DJs and lovers to the great "Balearic" family. The music of Tony Esposito is inspired by sounds from many countries around the world, mixing tribal rhythms with Neapolitan melodies, well represented by the track "Je -na", where the wide range of styles is manifested in its hypnotic sounds and rhythm in his percussion. The two tracks were born in 1983 after a trip to Jamaica and were composed together with Pino Daniele. The style and sound of these two pieces reflects the influence of Bob Marley and his group, with whom Tony Esposito has worked both in Italy and in Kingston Town, Jamaica .

Like many of the greatest Italo-disco records, Tony Esposito's 1983 double A-side "Je-Na'"/"Pagaia" is ridiculously rare. Put it this way: if you fancy nabbing yourself an original copy, it will make a serious dent in your wallet. This welcome reissue presents both tracks in their original 12" glory, mixed with clubs in mind by Mariano Boncaldo of Klein & M.B.O fame. It's the A-side that's arguably the pick of the pair, featuring as it does a Balearic-friendly blend of dense, bongo-laden rhythms, tribal chants and delay-heavy guitars. There's a bit more of a hazy disco bounce to "Pagaia", which sounds a little like a long lost Tullio de Piscopo record - all jazz-fusion scat singing, sunny horns and shuffling rhythms.

Circadia (6:13)
Time Of Nectar (feat Jonny Nash) (6:59)
Soft Light (7:06)
Review: The development of Aussie Tornado Wallace from a promising deep house producer to a masterful maker of Balearic beats has been a joy to behold. Since first hooking up with Beats In Space and the similarly inclined ESP Institute last year, he's begun to develop a trademark sound that's warm, humid and musically rich. He's still capable of laying down chunky dancefloor rhythms, though, as the hypnotic new age house bumper "Soft Light" - the flipside of this second outing for Lovefingers' acclaimed imprint - so deftly proves. Really, though, it's when he gets more adventurous - such as on the wonderfully evocative Jonny Nash collaboration "Time of Nectar" and decidedly tropical lead cut "Circadia" - that he really comes into his own. Highly recommended.

Review: Faze Action present their first 12" single from their new LP "Prisoner of Your Love", Including the outstanding 808 infused mix from Eric Duncan (Rub n'Tug).Eric has been showcasing the mix in his recent sets with DJ Harvey causing a stir on dance floors and its sure to feature in many a festival set this summer. Review: Back in 2010, esteemed espadrille wearing diggers Balearic Mike and Kelvin 'Soul Mekanik' Andrews put together a sublime selection of oddities, curios and gems for the WONK label under the all too suitable title Down To The Sea And Back. Some four years on the pair return with a second edition that is the end result of plenty of "late nights, licensing cat and mouse games, and dusty fingered rummaging" and the fourteen tracks are likely to place Down To The Sea & Back Vol 2 alongside it's predecessor in the cult compilation stakes. Staying true to the Balearic beat, there is plenty of ground covered here, from an eccentric French cover of reggae classic "Chase The Devil" (Dou Dou's "Chocolate Out Vanile Reggae") and the shimmering electronics of Chris and Cosey, to Ned Doheny's stoner-rock cover of Tata Vega's disco classic "Give It Up For Love". There's also some thrillingly wide-eyed slo-mo disco in the shape of Clout's brilliant "Sunshine Baby" and a chunk of African drum voodoo from Guem Et Zaca Percussion.

I Like It When You
I Like It When You (instrumental)
Review: Here's something to stir the loins of any discerning disco DJ: a studio hook-up between veteran producer Felix Dickinson (fresh from his much-loved outing on Futureboogie Recordings), Horse Meat Disco and one-time DFA man (and renowned multi-instrumentalist) Marcus Marr. There's an additional contributor, too: a mystery (presumably big-name) vocalist whose talk-box heavy delivery sits somewhere between Prince, George Clinton and Pharrell. The track itself is something of a summer anthem in the making - an immaculately produced P-Funk jam with the additional benefit of a shuffling, house-friendly groove. No details on how many copies have been pressed; either way, you'd be well advised to snap up a copy while you still can.

Review: Here's something rather special: the long-await debut album from Bison, Paul 'Mudd' Murphy and pal Ben Smith's collaboration with vocalist Ursula Major and krautrock legend (and all round fruitcake) Holgar Czukay. Recorded at Czukay's legendary Cologne studio and featuring mix-downs from Conrad Idjut, Travellers is a particularly dubwise trawl through hazy, krautrock-influenced disco and horizontal Balearica. By anyone's standards, it's a deliciously intergalactic concoction; a fearlessly atmospheric blend of low-slung grooves, delay-laden horns, quirky percussion, stargazing electronics and mesmerizing, eyes-wide-shut vocals. Given the talent on show, we shouldn't have expected anything less.

Every Breath I Take
Review: Black Rox is back with two more sneaky Soft Rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked CD wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. The A-side Sabu Dance combines Horns, Flutes & Percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from Africa via Berlin. This has been thoroughly road tested by Soft Rocks at their Kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. On the B-side is not the tantric one's ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of UK. reggae at its finest. Adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. A perfect track for blissful summer evenings.

Review: Those with a passion for '80s electrofunk, boogie, synth jams, machine soul and proto-house should already be aware of Inskwel and Benny Badge's Hot Shot label. The imprint specializes in delivering fresh music inspired by those sounds. Here, the Australian duo gathers together a superb selection of contemporary revivalist sounds from like-minded souls. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the rubbery bass and vintage synths of First Touch's "Sure Feels Good To Me" and Jupiter Gang's bodypoppin' electro workout "America", to the deep proto-house of Paradise Box's "Slave 2 Knowledge" and Inkswel's acid-tinged midtempo deep house rework of High Accord's "You Are (My Number One Priority)". Marc Chantereau - "Gibraltar" (Jeff Gets A Single Room! edit)
Raymonde Et Les Moutards - "Y'en A Marre" (Jean Marc Misere Pure Beat edit)
Review: In October, Gilbr's Vesatile imprint will release a collection of obscure French disco, boogie and synth wave jams put together by renowned Parisian crate digger Vidal Benjamin. Here, the label presents a second sampler, featuring re-edits of cuts on the comp. The real killer is Jean Marc Misere's Pure Beat Edit of Raymond Et Les Moutards' "Y'en A Marre", which turns the original into a locked-in chunk of dancefloor-friendly boogie underpinned by a superbly rubbery bassline. The A-side edit of "Gibraltar" by Marc Chantereau is pretty tasty, too, with the eccentric original - all whoops, loose disco and zany vocals - being given a well-judged dancefloor tweak.

Philou Louzolo - "Woman 2 Woman" (Tribute to Kathleen Cleaver)
Martin Hayes - "Broken Memory"
Review: If you're going to launch a label, it helps to make your first release a bit of a killer. That's certainly the case with this varied collection of floor-friendly burners that constitutes the debut of Bristol-based outfit Banoffee Pies. There's a range of edits and original material, with Amsterdam's Mr Mendel arguably stealing the show with "Freakin" - a tough chunk of booty-shakin' P-funk. That said, Ruf Dug's "Cosmic Feelings" - a heady trip into sweaty, analogue Detroit house territory with darting synths and bubbling electronics aplenty - is also incredibly impressive. Elsewhere, Martin Hayes goes deep, slow and sensual on the lovingly crafted "Broken Memory", while Philou Louzolo drops a sinewy chunk of laidback disco-house in the shape of trumpet-boasting chugger "Woman 2 Woman".

Review: Given the infamous depth of Nick The Record's vinyl collection, you'd expect this contribution to Z Records' excellent Under The Influence series to be packed to the rafters with unheralded gems. Predictably, it is, delivering 22 cuts that should be thrillingly new to all but the most dusty-fingered collectors. Picking out highlights from such an excellent and in-depth collection is tough, but try the steel drums-laden celebration of Boogsie's "Can't You See Me", the synth-laden jazz-funk badness of "Keep Your Shoes" by MC and His Great Googa-Moogas, and the fizzing, melody-rich 808 electro of Ronnie Jones "Video Games". If that's not enough there's also a swathe of DJ-friendly re-edits from Nick himself.

Review: French diggers and weird disco specialists Macadam Mambo have looked eastwards for this 12", employing the renowned talents of crate diggers-turned producers Tokyo Matt (Otaku Soundsystem) and Mori Ra & Asn (Tokto Oyama Edit). The quartet of edits on show is superb, and delivers intoxicating, wide-eyed interpretations of thrillingly obscure cuts. Choose between the winding, synth-laden fusion brilliance of "Tour De Montreaux", the melodious synth work and glassy-eyed appeal of "The Passenger", and the chugging, Italo-goes-Balearic atmospherics of "Just Another Story". Review: Amazingly, it's some 13 years since Balearic-minded Danish DJ/producer Kenneth Bager founded the Music for Dreams imprint. The label's releases are relatively few and far between these days, but those 12" singles Bager does release are usually top notch. This second Sunset Sessions selection is a case in point. It's packed with sweet, effortlessly atmospheric nu-Balearic gems, from the drifting downtempo pop bliss of Turbotito's remix of Baby Alpaca's "Sea of Dreams" to the piano-laden rush of Emil Germ's delicious "Tease & Burn". Best of all, though, is Bager's own "Fat Bottom Penguins", a tasty chunk of dancefloor-centric dub built around delay-laden synths and a brilliantly rubbery electric bassline.

Review: Friendly Monster is a new label that's so far only released the one record, a three-track various artist 12". They've done the same for their second offering, only giving Bendy & Hristo and Free Association a side of real estate each. Combine elements of New York disco with new wave, no wave, minimal wave, whatever wave, and Bendy & Hristo's own edit to their track "Love Contest" has all the makings of a swooning floor filler. Meanwhile the B-side has more of an Arthur Russell element to it, with flashes of Queen, indie rock, rock and cosmic disco mixed in. Two tough and sensual cuts on the one record.

Review: For some oddball disco with an '80s soundtrack vibe don't overlook the strung out funk of DJ Ringardos' version to Queen Zaza's "Pense Qu'Elle Danse", a highlight from the Versatile various artist EP. Sharing that side is Jean-Marc Misere's discoco edit of Raymonde Et Les Moutards' "Y'En A Marre!" which sounds like a cross between original New York Electro (think Man Parrish) and the contemporary French pop group Yelle, while Gilbert Cohen & Vidal Benjamin get deeper and chic on their Italo-styled edit to "I Love Video" by New Paradise - something you can imagine lighting up the dance floors of Rimini. Lastly there's the funkified bass rhythms and theremin sounds of the ALT edit to "Amnesie" by Ark. Edits don't get much better than this.

Review: Having been responsible for the debut Vivod transmission, label founder Ali Renault has largely adopted a more curatorial role as it's blossomed, introducing some lesser known but like minded artists that lent the operation a truly diverse feel. Vivod is much, much more than merely electro or wave, there are moods and atmospheres explored with each release that get better with age. The Afterlife is Renault's first Vivod transmission in a year and the title track feels as wistful in tone as it does in name, with a mid-paced tempo and spaciousness allowing the producer to introduce some real textural detail into the arrangement. A sense of rhythmic, almost Krautish, urgency and some sublime oscillating synths give B Side track "Birdial" a feeling of hope that's truly rewarding.

Khidja - "Mustafa" (Jamie Paton dub)
Blancmange - "The Western" (Cage & Aviary Fear Is Nothing dub)
The Ganges Orchestra - "The Calling" (Khidja remix)
Review: To accompany the release of Especial's compilation mix CD, "Eleccio" - offering of a
snapshot of the first 9 EPs on the label - a limited edition sampler EP is being released
featuring 4 unreleased remixes from the label's roster to date.
Ever since the first white labels appeared at the end of Summer 2013, [Emotional] Especial
has had a busy release schedule, putting out music that are a slightly warped take on club
music. Mixing the influences of dub, electro, disco, proto-house, house and techno, a feeling,
a sound, a vibe has appeared without any preordained plan.
With the release of EES10CD - a DJ meets studio compilation mix created by label mainstay
and handyman, Jamie Paton - to mark the end of first series of the label, it was decided to
included a couple of specal unreleased remixes to add a bit of new with the old in the mix.
To that end this limited edition vinyl sampler was created to include the two remixes, plus
the inclusion of another two gems that simply needed to see the light of day.
First is the alternative "Member" remix of Inhalt by Black Merlin - a strings meets leather
bar club-dub-out that takes things deeper and darker than before. This is followed by Jamie
delivering his own take of Khidja's massive Mustafa, with a warped, swamped out dub. Next
is another mix from Cage & Aviary of their pals, Blancemange. Brooding low-slung rerub dub
anyone? Finally there is a very special remix by Khidja of The Ganges Orchestra. Reissued
on Emotional Rescue in 2013, this special remix takes the vocal mantra of the original and
creates a balearic-raga tale that perfectly rounds off Especial to date.

Super Chips 808
Review: Former Chicken Lips man Dean Meredith seems to have found a soul mate in grumpy New York DJ/producer Eric Duncan; this is the duo's fifth collaborative 12" for Golf Channel in the last two years. "Broken Drums" picks up where previous installments left off, delivering an attractive, unfussy blend of proto-house influenced drum machine rhythms, looped chords and vintage synthesizer melodies. As is customary with their 12" singles, flipside "Super Chips" drops the tempo, offering up a faintly foreboding leftfield nu-disco jam blessed with trippy synths and vintage sounds. The "Super Chips 808" version strips the track back to its hissing, woozy rhythm, delivering a no-nonsense, freestyle-influenced take for late night floors.

This debut EP for Phil South's impeccable Golf Channel imprint does a good job in showcasing his range of influences. "Consultant's Agreement" peppers a loose analogue house groove with Plone and Boards of Canada style lo-fi melodies, while "Scale These Heights" sounds like Kraftwerk's "Europe Endless" after a night out in Brooklyn. Pleasingly, his edits are sympathetic to the source material, and there's no hint of additional house kicks or needless effects.
