The Break Up
The Make Up
Review: After a break through 2012 with EPs on Dirt Crew, Murmur and Freerange, Detroit Swindle take a second bite out of their 2013 cherry with the Break Up to Make Up EP on new label Heist. The A-side is "The Break Up", a sidechaning rollercoaster of sampled, looped and filtered vocals that bounce of bit-staccato Rhodes, silky hats and tight drums. On the B-side is a deeper "The Break Up" featuring breathy, feminine vocals similar to Australian and Third Strike act The Tortoise. Deep and flowing house music for the dancefloor.

FlyLOVE (Andres remix)
FlyLOVE (original mix)
Review: "Flylove" is a prominent highlight of Lovelife Is A Challenge, the digital only LP Oakland singer songwriter Chris Turner released last year; produced in conjunction with Phantom Lover, the track came off like Fly Lo dipping his toes in jazz and deep house at the same time. Rebirth have licensed the album for a remastered full vinyl release and "Flylove" makes for perfect single material and look the label have only gone and commissioned the master of Detroit Dust Andres to remix the track. The results are dipped in the same kind of tape worn warmth that characterised his ubiquitous New For U plate last year and is already a firm favourite of Gilles and MCDE.

Fallout
Review: Steffi's Dolly label continues to impress and surprise on their fifteenth release, turning to Irish producer Leonid for a three track exposition of his deep analogue style. If you've checked Leonid's prior output for Sistrum and Photic Fields you'll know Dubliner Paul Smith uses the project to draw on a sound that is warm, subtle and contains faint echoes of Motor City Soul and this much is very evident on the Radar EP. Perhaps less suited to the peak time than some of Dolly's recent issues, the three tracks here will instead appeal to those looking to set the mood and Smith's inherent musicality and understanding of his craft really shines through, especially on the slow burning, glowering brilliance of B Side track "Fall Out".

October - "Galactic Dawn"
Aybee - "ATCG"
Adam Lundberg - "Remember"
Dakini9 - "Daemon"
Review: Previous instalments of Soul People's Earth Tones series have featured the likes of Move D, Fred P and Joey Anderson, and the lineup on this fourth outing more than maintains these standards. October, Aybee, Adam Lundberg and Dakini 9 all feature and contribute house and techno of the deep and sensuous variety. Bristol don October's "Galactic Dawn" is a typically deep piece of cosmically-tinged house with synths wrung out like blankets soaked in space dust, while Aybee's "ATCG" is a classic piece of chord-driven house whose melodic elements are submerged beneath a deep layer of murky atmospherics. Adam Lundberg's "Remember" places breathy vocals over a dubby, brushed groove filled with sub-aquatic sounds, and Dakini9's "Daemon" hits the perfect mid-point between driving techno and a dreamy melodic sensibility.

U Heard What Da Man Said Muthafukka!!
Nelson County
Review: Despite having already released a 16 track album this year, Detroit's finest, Omar S, proves that there is quite simply nothing stopping him as he issues the four track Nelson County. "Don't Let Dis Be HapNin! Comes on like the classic "Psychotic Photosynthesis" at witnessed through a haze of smoked glass, while "U Heard What Da Man Said Muthafukka!!" is something much more driving, like taking a spin on Detroit's streets after dark in a souped up Dodge Charger, before "Nelson County" sees the tough house-focused denouement take place in a dingy backstreet club. As always with Omar S, this stuff doesn't mess about....

Manifesto (Bewe Effect)
Manifesto (original mix)
Aybees Blakspace Federation (Slap mix)
Review: Taking a proud stance loaded with an explicit message, Ron Trent truly excels himself as a deep house great with an innate understanding of how to channel his African roots into contemporary music. The A side of Manifesto features the "Bewe Effect" mix, which first reveals Trent's diatribe on what he stands for, while the drums snake and snap underneath in a tracky but utterly engrossing groove of tribal house. The original mix of "Manifesto" meanwhile smooths out those percussive edges with a more delicate arrangement of bongos and congas intertwining with winsome keys of a perfectly balanced nature. Aybee steps up for his own "Blakspace Federation" version that reaches to a more dubby construction with focused, pumping drums and simmering melodies that provides an equally apt vessel to Trent's musings.

Jungle (feat Andy Hart)
Ignorance Is Bliss
Zitze
Review: Tipped as one of this year's breakout stars in deep house circles, German producer Max Graef may belong in that small percentile whose talent more than justifies the obligatory, never ending, wildly oscillating circles of hype. Last month's platter for Melbourne Deepcast kept the Juno office 1210 well serviced and this new release on Detroit Swindle's Heist label offers further proof of Graef's knack for heavily percussive house music distinguished by certain production idiosyncrasies. Lead track "Jungle" features Andy Hart and stands out because there's just so much detail and attention without ever sounding overly busy - the mark of a real talent. Raw Cuts era MCDE is an easy comparison with B Side opener "Ignorance Is Bliss" but where most would lazily slap down a hastily cut up soul hook, Graef opts for an outer galactic vibe that threatens to explode with vivid colour. "Ztize" also rolls on a similar tip to Graef's celebrated compatriot but with Plessow currently on a production hiatus this newcomer offers fans of current soul and jazz indebted house music a compelling alternative.

B-Side Of The Game
Review: The Manucci's Mistress label gathers pace, looking to Nottingham for their fourth release in the shape of The Lost Sessions EP by Cassio Kohl. Apparently moved to sign up Kohl for a release of the back of a mere 15 seconds of first hearing the producer's debut EP for Amadeus Records, the three tracks here fully justify such snap decision making from the Manucci's Mistress big cheeses. Kohl's sound is a classic take on the deep house template, showing both a talent for raw emotion and clinical production as well the sort of hooky vocal samples and epic lead synths that immediately grab your attention.

Review: REPRESS ALERT! My Love Is Underground return with only their second release of 2013, with MLIU15 introducing the sounds of Dungeon Meat. The new collaborative endeavor between MLIU regular Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha of Back To Basics fame, Dungeon Meat live up to the brash nature of "The Fuck Off Track" with heavy hitting percussion driven house at it's finest. Look out for a label of the same name from Dungeon Meat later this year. Face down Ukrainian producer SE62 returns for MLIU duty for a third time with the hook heavy deep house burn of "True Force".

More Miles Between Us
Review: The production renaissance of Rhythm Plate continues apace with the third release on their Pressed For Time label which revisits one of the Peak District duo's earliest releases. Originally issued on the crucial UK house imprint DIY Discs back in the halcyon days of the late nineties, the Masters At Wirksworth EP helped establish the Rhythm Plate sound. Clever programming and a deep stomping vibe permeated all four tracks and this is still the case some fourteen years on. As the cunningly re-titled EP suggests, the two original tracks have been newly remastered and are accompanied by two brand spanking new mixes by Matt Rhythm and Ant Plate...so there's now no reason to pay L106 on discogs for the original EP!

Simple Setup
Safe The Energy
Athens
Review: Having been involved to some degree in two out of the three releases on Derive Schallplatten thus far, Christopher Rau returns to the fledgling label to helm their first full artist EP. Titled simply Derive 4, this record sees the Smallville regular in typically melodically rich territory - indeed, at first glance the opening track "Simple Set Up" could possibly be mistaken for a John Talabot production were it not for the sort of rhythmic detail that characterises a Christopher Rau track. Turn the plate over and "Safe The Energy" is a breezy jazz flecked house cut emboldened by some deep sub bass movements whilst "Athens" is Rau flexing his dusty drum programming. It's loose and abstract but still packs enough weight to slot into the middle of a set. Quintessential Christopher Rau!

I Get This Feeling
Confusion (Jacob Korn deep mix)
Review: Freerange serve up another delectable slice of deep house, this time turning to new Russian producer Kito Jempere to deliver the goods. "Confusion" is a decidedly confident start to a career in releasing music, combining finely teased soul and studio punch with fluttering textures that dart around just beneath the surface. "I Get This Feeling", while distinct from its predecessor, plies the same trade in diverse sound palette and full-bodied delivery. Jacob Korn strays from the Uncanny Valley for a "Deep" mix of "Confusion" that pares the bold elements of the original down to delicate slices of synth and drums that fold in on each other with elegance and poise.

You've Never Been To Konotop
Still Time
Review: First announced over 15 months ago, Firecracker finally come through with You've Never Been To Konotop (Selected Works 2009-2012) a rather finely presented collection of tracks from the self styled 'Slavic Spiritual Warrior" Vakula. The main recording alias of Ukrainian Mikhaylo Vityk, Vakula first emerged in 2009 with a succession of singular deep house explorations for respected hubs such as Dekmantel, Ethereal Sounds, 3rd Strike and Firecracker offshoot Shevchenko an as the extended title suggests this twelve track LP focuses on unreleased material from this same period. Musically, the tone mirrors Vityk's material for Shevchenko, taking the mainframe of house and melding it with elements of "Ukrainian folk melodies, esoteric cryptic rhythm patterns, field recordings, interludes and overgrown organic effects hidden beneath acres of cosmic murk." Let's take a moment to appreciate the rather unique double gatefold sleeve with hand-drawn, silk screened artwork too.

Unique handmade red paint bicycle wheels patterns on the front record sleeve - Each a unique individual piece, sleeve backside handstamped, vinyl comes as transparent light rose transparent coloured vinyl. Music-wise, both the original version of "Bicycle Love" and the two accompanying remixes from Brad P and Damon Lamar slot neatly into the Yore aesthetic - indeed Vaz is on wonderfully sweet and Detroit influenced form here!

Rabbit's Hole
Review: Kai Alce's first release of 2013 - only his second in two years - comes via his own NDATL imprint. Naturally the EP draws inspirations from the cities the label is named after: New York-Detroit-Atlanta. With tinges of dub, the A-side is reminiscent to the looping deep house of Norm Talley's music on Pariter, while the scrappy hats, popping snares and all-round rough fidelity of "Rabbit's Hole" rank up with the productions of Delroy Edwards on New York label L.I.E.S. Alce then brings some of his own home spun Atlanta funk to the EP with the title track "World Causes".

Bubble Cougar
Review: **REPRESS**The last time a newcomer graced Theo Parrish's Sound Signature, it resulted in widespread praise for the Flowers EP from London based producer, DJ and singer Andrew Ashong, somehow we get the feeling this latest release on the label will prove to be as memorable. The Scorpio Rising EP sees Parrish look much closer to home and grant the DC-born, Detroit-bred producer Jay Daniel his debut release and the four track 12" more than lives up to his billing as one of Boiler Room's most exciting new discoveries at DEMF. Wild Oats obsessives will probably know Daniel from the Fundamentals residency shared with Kyle Hall and he's clearly spent some time honing his Detroit influenced craft, with cuts like "No Love Lost" expertly balanced between melody and rugged drum grit. "Brainz" is the kind of no-nonsense DJ tool you might have heard on a FXHE B Side circa 2008 whilst "I Have No Name" demonstrates Daniel is eminently capable of the sort of hope inducing Utopian house from the D that the much missed Aaron Carl was renowned for.

Terrence Pearce - "The Fantastic"
Review: Earlier this year the Kolour Ltd label issued the (rather indecisively titled) It's House Not House EP which featured DJ Sprinkles, Rick Wade and Bicep; understandably it was quite well received by the house (not house) vinyl buying public and sensing they are onto a winning formula Kolour now issue a second volume. It's an equally international affair too with the UK represented by the ubiquitous Waze & Oddysey and the like minded Zoo Look whilst Leipzig and South African are represented in the shape of M.ono & Luvless and Terrence Pearce respectively. W&O demonstrate a slightly more contemplative mood melodically speaking amidst the swooping vocal hooks and club ready beats on "Playin Musique" whilst "Auckland Joggers" showcases the inherent musicality of M.ono & Luvless. On the flip Zoo Look come through with a deeply layered slab of contemporary UK house whilst "The Fantastic" from Mr Pearce lives up to it's name and then some.

Review: Regarded as a rising talent on the contemporary house scene thanks to his contributions to labels such as Morris Audio, Deso and Midnight Love Club, German producer Nick Beringer is collared by Skylax for this weighty slab of wax. Afterhours Cuts Vol 1 is split six ways and each of the tracks demonstrate the Berliner's production prowess and studious reverence for the key elements that made the early 90's period of house music so classic. Expect crisp, adventurous drum programming, a healthy dose of vocal sampling and hook laden motifs mixed up with jazzy textures throughout - the final "Afterhours Cut" is reminiscent of Dani Plessow in his Raw Cuts pomp.

I Need Your Love (Right Now) (Lem Church mix)
Penetration
Review: Digging back for one of the earlier Mood II Swing archive jams from 1992, the Slow To Speak stable continue their canny reissue series in fine style, taking the two most significant tracks from the Wall Of Sound EP and spreading them out over a whole side of vinyl each. "I Need Your Love (Right Now)" is vintage New York house music, tripped out and loopy just as much as it is funky and soulful. The keys and vocal rips can't be argued with, while the beat is a prime slice of early shuffle, and there's no let up on "Penetration" either. Taking a light tone with the snazzy chord stabs, Ciafone and Springsteen nailed it here as much as they would come to throughout the rest of the 90s.

Review: Having previously explored Chicago boogie and the roots of the Windy City's house scenes, Jerome Derradji's Still Music imprint turns its attention to the story of the largely unheralded Sunset Records Inc. A collaboration between Matt Warren, Miguel Garcia and Ralphie Rosario, the label blurred the boundaries between European-influenced sounds (specifically Italo, new wave and industrial) and "beat tracks" - what would become the city's greatest musical export: house. There's some terrific material here, from the touchy-feely piano house of Warren's "You Know The Way To My Heart" and freestyle/proto house fusion of White Knight's "Demons (A Mix 2 U)", to the dense disco drums of Master Plan's "Electric Balle (Large Dub)" and the foppish, Human League-go-Italo foppishness of Boom Boom & Master Plan's "Face The Music".

It's the first time Homepark have appeared on Courtesy Of Balance Recordings, sub-label to Chez Damier's Balance imprint. First up is the deep, skipping and resonator fuelled "Ratios", matched in fathoms by "Standing", a dubby and rhode-driven joyride. "Fly Away" sees Mr. Fingers' bassline inspirations take full effect next to lounge time piano playing, while "M&J's Dub" again traverses from deep house territory into a sphere of dubbier Sven Weisemann sounds.
