Brian (4:31)
Sort It (6:55)
Review: Darkside UK bass courtesy of B. Wright on Swamp 81 sister label Benton Beats. "Brian" sounds like a drum and bass 45 played on 33. Its gut wrenching sub bass ploughing away beneath a savage breakbeat and the reoccurring sample repeating "They don't want this London sound". We beg to differ! On the flip though is the sinister electro workout "Sort It" where once again the bass frequencies are the real deal and rhythmic metallic hiss faces off with a haunting futurist atmosphere. Proper street sound.

Strict Face - "Into Stone" (4:15)
Strict Face - "Into Stone" (Widows version) (4:15)
Review: After their first few outings, which included the efforts of Mumdance and Logos, Different Circles are back with their third release, this time an EP from Rabit (Soundman Chronicles) and newcomer Strict Face; the latter has only put out a handful of tunes to date. Bass wizard Rabit dominates the A-side with "Tearz", an aptly moody experimentation into piano keys, sparse bursts of noise and percussion - perhaps the oddest tune form the man yet! Strict Face comes through with the beat-heavy, hip-hop-leaning "Into Stone", followed by a dubbier, beatless version from Widows. Enticing and fresh.

Are You Losing My Hearing? (5:19)
Moneychangers (6:59)
Review: Tom 'Dam Mantle' Marshallsay and Rich McMaster from Golden Teacher were first granted an outlet as General Ludd through Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter's Mister Saturday Night last year with the breathless pair of house burners that made up the Woo Ha 12". Since then the General has brought the Luddite house sound to Clan Destine, 10 Thousand Yen and Autonomous Africa among others and now lands back on the Mister for the keenly anticipated Are You Losing My Hearing? Another two-track exercise in 12" dynamism, the title cut finds GL in sprightly house mood with a rubbery feel not too dissimilar to Gerd's Geeeman output. Flip it over and "Moneychangers" veers off into more dystopian, heads down territory with some killer modular squiggles throughout.

Global Dance (feat Flowdan & Mungo's Hi Fi) (3:02)
Mad Ting (feat JME) (3:47)
Review: Cameron Palmer aka Swindle has appeared on everything from Mala's Deep Medi, to the mythical Planet Mu, and even Brownswood Recordings. This time he returns to the Butterz imprint with "Global Dance", a bass-heavy stutter tune featuring the vocal talents of the one like Flowdan, and some collaborative support from Mungo's Hi-Fi in the studio. The flipside, "Mad Ting", features JME - another heavyweight in the UK grime scene - and drops his vocals over a twisted dubstep bullet with some serious levels of wobble. Heavy.

Shotta (Wen remix) (11:00)
Shotta (Kahn & Neek remix) (3:51)
Limbo (Tod remix) (5:55)
Review: Gully shots fired: Fresh from damaging the dance with both Footsie and P Money, Royal T's immovable banger gets the treatment from three of bass music's most exciting characters... Wen creates a tripped-out sensation that sits somewhere in the shadows between the industrial strength loopy psychosis of techno and the unnerving, spacey dynamics of dub. Kahn & Neek, meanwhile, get straight to the point with jaw-breaking snares and a bassline so deep and metallic you need a tetanus shot before you play it. Finally we hit a TQD remix of T's own "Limbo". Fresh from their debut "Day & Night", the dream trio of DJ Q, Flava D and Royal T strip down the beaty, LA-minded drifter and rebuild into an armoured Challenger tank. Bruising.

Trippin B (3:32)
Booboo (4:07)
Flange City (3:46)
Waybay (feat Marc Perrineau) (5:11)
Horrors In The Dance (4:36)
Review: UK house-broken beat star Cooly G has been off our radars for our while, but here she is again on Hyperdub, home to her productions since day one. She returns with five floor shakers but the opener, "Trippin B", cannot be beaten purely on the basis of the absolutely killer bassline that is carries - potentially this week's pick form us. However, "Booboo", although not as instantly alluring, is a fine house banger with plenty of percussive trickery and oddball vocal samples, while the flip is dominated by the flanging synths of "Flange City", "Waybay's" tropical groove, and the breaks and twists of "Horrors In The Dance". Aside from "Love Dub", this might well be one of her finest moments. Sick.

Walk Down Chapel (dub mix) (5:21)
Crisis (special mix) (4:54)
Dream '15 (4:27)
Review: It's been over two years and the wait is finally over, we can now enjoy a new Jam City EP on Night Slugs! The London producer was at the top of his game when he released 2012's Classical Curves LP, and since then he's only released a limited amount of music, always for Bok-Bok's mythical imprint - and who could blame him? "Walk Down Chapel (dub mix)" is pure Jam City, where a sluggish house tempo is distorted and broken down into a lo-fi jam with plenty of FX trickery, while "Crisis (Special Mix)" is a soulful hip-hop kinda lick, and "Dream '15" takes slow moving breaks and drops them over a grizzly plate of bubbly industrial mechanics.

Review: New artist on the block Fang Lilies makes their way through onto the Signal Life camp, a Finnish imprint that's long been a bastion for bass music of all flavours with previous releases coming from Kowton, Visionist, Last Japan and more. The Fang Lilies style spreads across half-step, and grime, with "Echelon" encompassing all three in its underbelly. "Atmospheric Oceans" is the other stunner in the pile, a broken grime track that's been submerged far into the depths of the ether. If you're into something dark, moody but ethereal, then this is the stuff for you. An impressive debut, indeed.

Review: The Curved Line sees the welcome return of Kelpe, one of the UK's most under-valued beat makers, with a fifth full length of a music-making career that spans almost 15 years. Once closely associated with the much-missed DC Recordings, 2013 saw Kel McKeown set up his own platform Drut Recordings and it appears to have elicited a new level of creativity in his music as Kelpe. It only takes a few listens to feel like The Curved Line is his most accomplished album to date, bursting in various stylistic directions with a real sense of confidence. There are moments of vivid melody that hit you like a satisfying ray of early morning sunshine, whilst some of the beat programming is simply sublime. A great album to sink into and swim around.
