Velvet Hammer - "Happy"
PW - "Happy"
Review: The Originals series continues to excel in deep-digging dot-joining department with this cool rewind back to 1977 when Velvet Hammer's "Happy" became a ubiquitous northern soul anthem thanks to its relentless groove, emphatic organ and soul-stirring falsetto vocals. Back to the future for the B-side we hear how celebrity hat wearer Pharrell Williams digested the classic and made it his own. Spanning over 35 years of soul, the Originals concept just keeps on teaching.

Pornostar
Review: **REPRESS ALERT** The second release on Kutmah's IZWID imprint is a rare collection of bugged out electronic soul from the Los Angeles-based vocalist, producer and poet, Seven Davis Jr. "The Lost Tapes Vol. 1" spans 12 years of experimental, cosmic out-of-body-and-mind music, of mostly four and eight track recordings once lost in storage via a lengthly hiatus due to drug addiction and depression.
Resurfacing in 2012, Seven Davis Jr.'s 'Thanks' appeared on Kutmah's much lauded "Worldwide Family Vol. 2" compilation on Brownswood Recordings, after which the kaleidoscopic artist released the clattering funked beats of "Lo-Fi Vintage" and house-inspired "One" EP.
For IZWID, "The Lost Tapes Vol. 1" is a creative blueprint for Davis Jr.'s brilliantly unorthodox approach with his beautifully raw drums and psychotropic harmonies. "I made a lot of this music many years ago and other labels and artists hated on me for it," says Davis Jr. of the lost tapes. "They said it was too weird, too different, sounded like drug music (it was) and they told me I was going to hell, for 'Pornostar'. Years later; new life, new city, new day and age. I found the music again, which I never stopped loving and decided to send it all to Kutmah.

Review: Revivalist funk and soul veterans Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings appeared to have drawn the curtain down on their career back in 2011, with the release of the well-timed retrospective Soul Time. Happily, they were just on hiatus, and three years on return with their first album of new material since 2010. For those who enjoy their sweet, soulful, faithful recreation of original '60s and '70s soul, this should be cause for rejoicing. Certainly, Give The People What They Want lives up to its title, delivering a blend of strong songs, heart-aching lyrics, nostalgic production and superb playing.

Looking Up To You (3:58)
(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love (3:58)
Review: With roots as a backing singer for Stevie Wonder, Wycoff went on to become a soul ambassador throughout the early 80s. This 1982 reissue is one of the best examples of his silky, heartfelt delivery... "Looking Up To You" is a dynamic love song where traces of big 70s production build and build throughout. "(Do You Really Love Me) Tell Me Love", meanwhile, was only ever released as a B-side. Its 80s production counter the dramatics of the A-side with cool synthetic perfection. Reissues don't get much broader in production or sweeter in sound than this.

Mind Made Up (feat Kylie Auldist)
Losin' Streak (feat Daniel Merriweather)
Review: Two big cuts taken from the Melbourne trio's sixth album Blind Bet, here the band flip two sides of a ridiculously funky coin. "Mind Made Up" features the vocals of Tru Thoughts starlet Kylie Auldist. Her rich emphatic vocals fit the 70s soul licks perfectly. Smooth and dynamically delivered with big horns, subtle strings, major chords and an instantly catchy chorus, you'll make your mind up on this long before the last horns blast a final cheerio. "Skeletor", meanwhile, is a much more party-focussed jam where big breakbeats provide the back bone for sharp horns, heavy Hammond slapping and warm gravelly vocals.

Beautiful Waster Of Time
Beautiful Waster Of Time (Smoove remix)
Review: Leading London funk label Jalapeno returns to the roots with this stunning 45 from emerging talent Alexia Coley. With a delivery that sounds somewhere between Marie Queenie Lyons and Amy Winehouse, her honey coated lungs could charm life into a concrete statue. Backed up by a super tight band - all horns and tight drums - "Beautiful Waste Of Time" sums up her spirit succinctly and acts as a very neat calling card for her forthcoming album. For added groove dynamics flip for Smoove's remix as he breaks it down to the backing vocals, bass and horns before rebuilding to a giant crescendo.

I've Got To Find My Baby
Review: Secret Stash have been working with the Leaner family for over two years, digging and documenting their family's One-Derful label dynasty. The result of this work will be six compilations that comprise all manner of funk soul treats and unreleased gems from the label's many off-shoots. The party starts right here with two never-before-released tracks from Northern Soul faves The Ringleaders. With only one official release (and a super-rare acetate surfacing in the 80s) these recordings - that span uptempo stomps and smouldering smooches - will delight all soul fans who've been craving more from the Michigan act for many years. Delivered with the original M-Pac stamp of approval, this is as close to a time machine as we're likely to get.

I Found It All In You
We Got A Thing (Going On)
Review: Atlanta soul duo The Trey J's were active on the live circuit for over 20 years, however they only ever release one 45 on Tee Gem Records. Now, thanks to Soul Junction, it's been realised and given the lease of live it truly deserves. "I Found It All In You" is a rocket-fuelled funk jam with big horns, belly-driven vocals and a chorus you simply can't not sing along to. Meanwhile on the B, "We Got A Thing (Going On)" is a much slower, more heartfelt composition that echoes with Otis level gravitas. Forty four years old and still resonating with power, this is one release you can't go without.

Review: Kelis on Ninja Tune... Now there's a partnership we can all get down with. It's a partnership that works incredibly well, too: Produced by Dave Sitek (who's discography includes the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Foals), her sixth album sits somewhere between classic early 90s R&B and super-classic Motown soul. As well as the instantly distinctive and beautifully emphatic vocals we associate with Kelis, each track sports big orchestration, memorable hooks and an unequivocal sense of funk and fun. The result is an album will that will sound great in years to come and gets to show her most soulful, musical side. Tasty.
