Famiglia EP (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: BATB 002. Rel: 17 Jul 17
  1. My People (3:25)
  2. Bamba Ditounalene (11:32)
  3. Sortez, Les Filles! (Kay Suzuki remix) (6:26)
Review: This belated second 12" on Beauty & The Beat (the label's debut landed in 2015) comes courtesy of crate-digging DJ/producer Atemi and a revolving cast list of guest musicians. Opener "My People" - an "ode to friendship" according to the sleeve notes - sets the tone, with Atemi lacing African vocals over a gentle, bongo-laden beat, sun-kissed keys and woozy flutes. It's impeccable sunshine music, all told. The fluid collective opts for a different approach on the rather epic "Bamba Diounalene", a loose, soft touch dancefloor workout full of distinctive guitars, chanted vocals and post Afrobeat grooves. Japanese producer-in-London Kay Suzuki makes his presence felt on the flip, brilliantly wrapping a rolling, tribal drum groove in dreamy chords and spacey electronics.

  2. Busy Bees (3:13)
Review: Back by Dope demand, MAW man Kenny unleashes a highly limited 150-only 45" from 2014's much-needed remaster of Fab Five Freddy's seminal Wild Style score. Here are two of its many block-rocking gems; the slinky Kool & The Gang-style street struts of "Military" and the classically-toned bumblebee tracing "Busy Bees" where a faint buzz rises with intensity over a slower, smouldering break. Don't sleep.

  2. Alma Negra - "Onga" (7:01)
  3. Kerem Akdag - "Getdownsoclose" (4:37)
  4. James Tillman - "Wander" (2:58)
Review: With its festival, International Series, DJ Directory and Soundsystem: Dimensions has become a leading name in the underground. In only a mere six years of existence thus far, that's quite impressive we must say! Now, they extend their influence with the start of a new label: Dimensions Recordings. It launches with a 12 track compilation across three separate discs. As the label best describe themselves "An Introduction Part 1 calls upon artists from different corners of the globe who share the similarity of undeniable soul and expression in their music." From the Swahili sung harmonies on Mim Suleiman's lo-slung boogie down groove "Pole Pole", to the afro influences of Swiss collective Alma Negra's "Onga" whose spiritual life music reaches near tribal moments. On the flip, there's Istanbul's Kerem Akdag with "Getdownsoclose" a soulful jazzy and downright dusty deep house groove. Maryland's James Tillman's soulful vocals on "Wander" rounds off Part 1 with a dose of the soul.

  3. Oyelo (Kay Suzuki Drum dub) (6:21)
Review: Hot on the Cuban heels of "Nacao" comes another scorching hot Latin fusion from London-based virtuoso Claudio Passavanti. Loaded with an all-star cast comprising master percussionist Giovanni Imparato, Ronnie Scotts resident Rene Alvarez, the dancefloor-minded beat is peppered with Cuban percussion and vocal rhythms and lavish jazzy swings to the keys. Remix-wise Kay Suzuki provides two-for-one; an outstanding Balearic toe-tickler massaged with just the right amount of cosmicity and the naked drum track which is an odyssey in itself. Oye oye.

Simmering (12")
Cat: 2041 BLACK. Rel: 17 Jul 17
  1. Simmering (4:59)
  2. Private Life (3:31)
  3. Long Climb In The Sun (4:15)
Review: It would seem we're back on the Christmas card list... 2000 Black supergroup comprising the likes of Dego, Mensah and original Bugz members Lord and Tatham have been slowly ramping up their releases again and this year has seen their largest output yet. Following "Two Way Here One Way Go", "Simmering" proffers three more sublime and silky instrumentals from deeply decorated foursome. "Simmering" is a tight jazz funk jam with a sprung guitar groove spine and a blissful switch into soothing flutes midway, "Private Life" flips for a sunnyside digidub, all spacious and rippling with its breezy keys while "Climb The Sun" brings us back to the funk root note but with rising synth insistency that's bruk to the bone. Simmering now, boiling tomorrow...

  10. I Love Music (feat Lisa Tomlins) (3:57)
Review: This "Special Edition" of Lord Echo's recent third full-length, Harmonies, seems to be aimed at DJs. Whereas the original pressing contained the same tracks on one piece of wax, this version stretches the same tracks over two super-loud, heavyweight records. Formatting aside, the album itself is something of a head-in-the-clouds, feet-on-the-floor treat. It features the Kiwi producer working with a range of collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - to serve up intoxicating cuts that brilliantly fuses reggae, dub and rocksteady rhythms with elements borrowed from disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Review: Since launching earlier this year, Manana Records seems to have specialized in cross-cultural collaborations. The label's latest album release offers more of the same, with globally focused producers Sound Species joining forces with Ache Meyi, a four-piece outfit from Santiago de Cuba. The resultant album not only joins the dots between the past and the present - traditional folkloric percussion blended with contemporary dancefloor rhythms - but also organic and electronic instrumentation. It's a blend that works well, with Sound Species expertly crafting their synths and drum machines to the dense percussion and Afro-Haitian vocals of Ache Meyi. There's plenty of floor-friendly material to be found throughout, but also occasional trips into dreamy downtempo territory.
