Expensive Sheeeeet (hand-stamped 7")
Cat: BL 2000. Rel: 30 Jan 17
  1. Expensive Sheeeeet (4:47)
  2. Lando Disco (4:21)
Review: The lesser spotted Leggins returns with another pair of edit gems. Afro-focussed "Expensive Sheeeeet" comes with more switches than a cockpit as we flick between lolloping bass groove, deep tenor soul, rifle percussion and serious sprinkles of sunset magic. "Lando Disco" ventures west towards Brazil with rich orchestration, wondrous sweeping strings and a perfectly lamenting vocal. Sonic honey.

Review: Byron The Aquarius resurfaced earlier this year after a nine-year absence, delivering the future jazz/deep house fusion of High Life on Sound Signature. This speedy follow-up on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats label is, if anything, even better. Warm, rich, soulful and evocative, it includes six superb cuts. These variously touch on off-kilter modern soul ("Co$mic $hit"), Herbie Hancock-influenced deep house (the jazz-funk synths, woozy chords and smooth beats of "Moments In Life"), intergalactic hip-hop beats (the impeccable "Space N Time"), blissfully Balearic house (the hazy positivity of "The Sun"), and jazz-influenced house rollers ("Better Tomorrow").

Review: A genre-hopping, mind-bending mix from the king of eclecticism, Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet), that ushers in a new age of experimentation for the seminal DJ Kicks series. Known primarily for his home made excursions to the far reaches of the musical map, Kieran Hebden is a DJ on a different kind of trip, the gratifying results of which can be seen all over this exemplary DJ Kicks compilation (the 26th in this now legendary series). Inspired by his 8 hour sets at The End and in Ibiza with Timo Maas, Kieran says he has rediscovered the thrill of filling a floor: "Playing for people who just want to dance is an exciting thing for someone who’s into experimental music". As you might expect with Four Tet, however, nothing is ever that straightforward, and his DJ Kicks is a mind blowing experience, taking in just about as many genres as there are tracks: Old skool hip-hop, French prog, conscious soul, electronic experimentation, minimal techno, early two-step, cosmic jazz, African thumb pianos and much more besides share space here, bound together by analogue synth interludes, segues and an exclusive new Four Tet track specially created for this compilation 'Pockets'; this year's only release under the Four Tet moniker.

Love You Gotta Loose Again EP
 in stock $10.14
  1. Wouh (7:16)
  2. Love You Gotta Lose Again (3:25)
  3. Don't Believe The Hype (1:35)
Review: Gadi Mizrahi's Double Standard imprint graces our ears with yet more beautiful music from the prodigious Nicolas Jaar. Lead track "Wouh" is so slow it's almost going backwards, but Jaar layers the music perfectly, creating enough space between the downbeat hip-hop instrumentation to create a warm, soulful atmosphere. "Love You Gotta Lose Again" and "Don't Believe The Hype" share the B Side, the former featuring a pleasing vocal bouncing of twangy guitar licks, while the latter offers another insight into Jaar's love for downbeat, moody electronica. Presented in 10" all white vinyl, making for a killer all round package.

  9. Original Nairobi Afro Band - "Soul Makossa (No 1)" (7") (4:20)
  10. Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maestroes - "Jungle Beat (Mutaba)" (3:05)
Review: Jump 'N' Funk started life as a small event in New York, organized by Rich Medina in order to pay tribute to the genius of Fela Kuti. Since then, parties have been held across the world, with Medina and guests showcasing music by, or inspired by, the Nigerian Afrobeat legend. This debut Jump N Funk compilation follows a similar formula, delivering both purist Afrobeat cuts (see Fela's punchy "Stalemate", and "Na Oil" by son Seun and his band, Egypt 80), and tracks in other styles that draw heavily on the style. Highlights in the latter category include the hazy Afro hip-hop of Aquil, a tasty Afro-house dub of River Ocean's cover of Timmy Thomas' classic "Why Can't We Live Together", and the lazy, sun-kissed glory of Kutiman's "Bango Fields".

  1. Eastern System (feat Drahla) (4:04)
  2. Kalimba (3:14)
Review: While many labels out there are devoid of any vision or creative mission, Albert's Favourites has a very simply, incredibly sweet operating system at its core. Allegedly, the imprint is simply the prolongation of Albert's propensity to create tapes and soundtracks to his family's holiday, a little niche that he's always had, and one which he's successfully evolved here onto the commercial game. Hector Primmer is both new to the scene and new to the label, but "Eastern System", which features the MGMT-style vocals of Drahla, is clearly a tune that has been made by someone who has plenty of experience; its moody, percussive stance is both refreshing and excellently produced. "Kalimba" is no second-comer, and its rattling peaks and troughs of percussive flair remind us of the work of Don't DJ, if only a little bit further down the rabbit hole.

Love Songs: Part One EP

  1. Your Love (You Give Me Fever)
  2. Jimi & Faye (part 1)
  3. Taste Of Honey (From The City)
  4. Hey Now (When I Give You All My Lovin')
Review: When Peggy Lee slinked around in the 50s to the sultry strains of "Fever", could she ever have imagined that half a century later, people like Romare would be turning her tune into a weed smokin', love makin' slo-mo RnB jam? Unlikely to say the least, but "Your Love (You Give Me Fever") is on the money and respectful, if different to the original's mood. Elsewhere on Romare's latest Black Acre release, "Jimi & Faye" is a warped take on blues, "Taste Of Honey" recalls the days of daisy age hip-hop and "Hey Now" is a weary and haunting piano lament.
