Allaby (12")
Cat: 50WEAPONS 043. Rel: 02 Nov 15
  1. Addison Groove - "Allaby" (4:36)
  2. Errorsmith - "Airbag" (5:30)
Review: Here's something to excite all those who like their dance music to come with a heavy dose of funk: a split release from 50 Weapons that boasts material from Bristol-based floor-slayer Addison Groove and scene veteran Erik "Errorsmith" Wiegand. The latter is in a combative mood, delivering a rave-friendly chunk of analogue madness that comes complete with colossal build-ups, twisted acid lines, bouncy electronics and ghetto-tech-inspired intensity. While rather good, it lacks the energy and punch of Addison Groove's contribution, the throbbing "Allaby". Typically, it sits somewhere between the relentless jack of juke, the cut-up appeal of ghetto-tech, and the rolling goodness of tech-funk. However you describe the track, it's a bit of a banger.

Rival Dealer

Cat: HDB 080. Rel: 16 Dec 13
  1. Rival Dealer
  2. Hiders
  3. Come Down To Us
Review: After a decidedly silent 2013 Burial is back on Hyperdub with a new single that points to pastures new for the stealthy producer. "Rival Dealer" is sure to polarize opinion as it takes a positively unexpected route into hardcore breaks, static interference, all manner of oddball speech samples, diversions and switches in dynamics, and a willfully grainy production finish that borders on punk. Depending on where you choose to dive into the ten-minute track the experience could be very different; experiencing it in full is nothing short of a rollercoaster. "Hiders" too is full of surprises, more indebted to pop balladry than anything remotely garage related, and the emotive croon and swooning piano is only magnified by a Yazoo-esque drum stomp at the midway point. "Come Down To Us" is equally heartfelt, all slow release vocals and languid chords yet constantly fractured at the edges, with yet more surprising turns of bombast waiting in the wings over thirteen minutes.

Review: US artist Chaz Bundick is best known for his output as Toro Y Moi, a prolific project that across four albums and countless singles helped to define the much maligned chillwave movement. In the midst of his popularity, Bundick began to explore dancefloor tropes more explicitly as Les Sins and this project really took flight with the two records released on Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label over the course of the past two years. Snaith's work as Daphni is probably a good reference point for Michael, the debut album from Les Sins which cover, art aside, is a most enjoyable if unpredictable listen. Never really sticking to one style, there are bits of house, disco, ghetto-tech, bass music and pop covered across the 11 tracks.

Review: Majestic Casual favourite Mura Masa adds to his repertoire (which, until now, only comprises of last year's debut album Soundtrack To A Death) with this far-reaching seven-tracker. From this summer's unavoidable sandy-toed shuffler "Firefly" to the more experimental beats and dynamics of "Terrible Love" and the tumbledown cuts and scratches of "Lovesick Fuck", once again it's the sound of a young man making sense of soul, hip-hop and electronic music. Part beats, part soul, part future all baked in a sadboi slow cooker, Mura Masa can really do no wrong.

  4. Sirius (5:27)
Review: The latest ultra-limited release from Berlin's Through The Speakers collective comes from NGHT DRPS, a previously unheralded producer who hates vowels but loves big basslines. The four tracks showcased on his debut EP draw influence from across the bass music spectrum - think dubstep, UK funky, dub, kuduro, experimental D&B and even shangan rhythms - while offering some fresh, hybrid sounds. Perhaps the EP's greatest strength, though, lies in the subtlety and balance of NGHT DRPS's production, which sits somewhere between the sparse, stripped-back feel of UK grime and the more polished, fleshed-out feel of European house and techno.
