Allaby (12")
Cat: 50WEAPONS 043. Rel: 02 Nov 15
  1. Addison Groove - "Allaby" (4:36)
  2. Errorsmith - "Airbag" (5:30)
Review: Here's something to excite all those who like their dance music to come with a heavy dose of funk: a split release from 50 Weapons that boasts material from Bristol-based floor-slayer Addison Groove and scene veteran Erik "Errorsmith" Wiegand. The latter is in a combative mood, delivering a rave-friendly chunk of analogue madness that comes complete with colossal build-ups, twisted acid lines, bouncy electronics and ghetto-tech-inspired intensity. While rather good, it lacks the energy and punch of Addison Groove's contribution, the throbbing "Allaby". Typically, it sits somewhere between the relentless jack of juke, the cut-up appeal of ghetto-tech, and the rolling goodness of tech-funk. However you describe the track, it's a bit of a banger.

  13. NRG Jynx (Daze End version) (4:57)
Review: London's Brood Ma is affiliated to Quantum Natives, but the guy very much has his own sound and outlook on electronic music. In fact, one could say that this new album on Tri Angle is in a category of its own, and that each track stands alone in terms of genre and vibe. There is everything from far-out percussion thrashing, though to broken bass demolition, and a whole lot of noise in the mix. By that, we mean that each track on here is capable of breaking down at any moment, and unleashing a furious swarm of drones and glitches, transporting the listener from head-nodding, to brain-stirring. It is highly recommended, and is surely the bass pick of the week form us. KILLER.

  16. Ready To Lose (Shaken Up version)
Review: Earlier this year The Knife issued Shaking The Habitual Versions, a collection of new interpretations of many of their best-loved tracks based around those they originally performed on their Shaking The Habitual album tour of the U.S. Initially released in digital format, the collection gets a belated double vinyl pressing here replete with a bonus CD version. For the uninitiated, there are some stunning new takes here, with "Silent Shout" being transformed into a tropical-tinged dancefloor smasher and "Bird" being turned into a high-tempo voodoo workout replete with pots and pans percussion. Amongst the skewed dancefloor styles, inventive rhythms and oddball beats you'll also find a particularly dark and maudlin version of "Ready To Lose" that sounds like it was designed for the soundtrack of one of those bleak Scandinavian detective dramas.

  1. Understanding (5:06)
  2. Intake (6:07)
  3. Links (7:41)
  4. Spectral (5:05)
Review: Part one of a three part album, the shadowy sounds of the unidentified Mikarma hit a new level. "Understanding" is an emotional piece of post-autonomic halftime loaded with twinkling arpeggios and twisting chord changes, "Intake" retains the twinkles (albeit in a different minor key) but skips between plodding and galloping thanks to some creatively placed kickdrums. "Links" dips it toes into a more classical D&B feel with flightier drums and icy pads while "Spectral" takes us down the darkest alleys of techno town where nothing is what it seems. Bring on disc two!

ASCII Bot (12")
Cat: TEXT 030. Rel: 05 May 14
  1. Ascii Bot
  2. Blatant Water Cannon
Review: Four Tet certainly isn't doing anything by halves these days, with no less than three records on his Tex label surfacing in the space of a week. Dedicated Four Tetters will no doubt recall Text slipping out a record from the anonymous Percussions a few years back, and it now seems that Hebden has owned up to being behind the project. If you follow Four Tet on twitter you probably know all about the two tracks on Ascii Bot which seem to capture the producer's current style perfectly, all mushy chords, euphoric synth lines and big room-friendly vocal sampling that steer clear of unnecessary melodic noodling. "Blatant Water Cannon" is a particular gem, especially when that phasing comes in.

  10. Fading (6:06)
  11. Beams (5:12)
Review: It's been four long years since the last full-length from American electronica producer Henry "Shlohmo" Laufer, a particularly epic wait given his early productivity (he famously launched his career with three albums in two years). Dark Red is, happily, an impressive set, with 11 doses of IDM inspired goodness stretched across two slabs of heavyweight wax. There's naturally much to admire, from the evocative, lo-fi fuzziness of "Emerge From Smoke" and picturesque D33J hook-up "Apathy" (a kind of ambient jazz exploration with hints of horror), to the skittish, jungle-influenced madness of "Fading". Best of all, though, is closer "Beams", a full-throttle exercise in the power of breakcore percussion.

Review: Tom 'Toddla T' Bell has enjoyed a rapid rise to the higher echelons of dance music thanks to a robust sound rooted in the twin attractions of dancehall and B-more. For this second album for Ninja Tune, he seems hell bent on proving his eclectic credentials. With deviations into piano-laden, breakbeat-driven house, murky R&B, post dubstep-pop and Prince-ish sexfunk, plus collaborations with Roisin Murphy, Roots Manuva and Shola Ama, Watch Me Dance comes on like a contemporary take on Basement Jaxx - albeit with a distinct Sheffield twist (listen out for nods to Steel City bleep techno, Moloko and long-forgotten beat manglers the All Seeing I).

Review: Did you know that Lima, Peru, has earned a reputation as South America's party capital? Or, for that matter, that the City is home to a thriving "tropical bass" scene, where a dedicated band of homegrown heroes giddily fuse dubstep, techno and electronica? Peru Boom aims to chart the rise of this healthy but internationally under-represented scene, via tracks from all of the city's major players. For those not schooled in the scene's intricacies, it makes for fascinating listening, as traditional South American rhythms and vocals get mangled, re-arranged, and fused with heavy sub bass lines, fizzing electronics, humid melodies and tipsy, 8-bit funk.
