Review: It's always been hard to pin down the work of Shit & Shine, an ever-changing collective of drummers, guitarists, electronics wizards and experimentalists gathered around industrial maverick Craig Clouse. Their self-proclaimed "post everything" sound changes with each successive release. Here, Clouse and company doff a cap to krautrock, drone, lo-fi rock, metal and industrial on a set that veers between spaced-out, hypnotic post-rock excellence, angry, riff-laden soundscapes and pleasingly-spaced out epics. There's something decidedly psychedelic about Clouse's approach, even if the resultant music is remarkably down to earth, and some will hear the out-of-this-world swing of freestyle jazz amongst the rumbling bass and mentalist keys on "Writing Poetry On Your Forehead With The Tip of A Hunting Knife".

Review: Craig Clouse's Shit & Shine project is more wild, fun and free-spirited than your average industrial inspired, noise-obsessed outfit. This is due, in part, to the project's ever-changing cast-list of drummers, some of whom come to the fore on the amusingly titled Total Shit. It's the outfit's first album for Powell's Diagonal label, and giddily rushes between bombastic fusions of Stomp style percussion and wonky industrial techno, EBM influenced eccentricity, madcap post-disco funkiness (the brilliantly cheeky "Long Island City"), mutant electro (the bizarre but brilliant "I Hate This Machine"), crackpot experimentalism, and tracks that gleefully slither free of genre categorization. In other words, it's a hugely entertaining, imaginative affair, jam-packed with tracks that get better with every listen.

Review: As they proudly communicate on their Discogs page, Craig Clouse's Shit & Shine act are made up of a continuously fluxing collective of drummers and their " is hard, varied, and post-everything". That is exactly the same way that we see them, but our favourite aspect of their releases has to be the fact that we absolutely never expect what they come up with. They are a wild and surprising bunch who have injected a missing 'fun' element from experimental dance music and, whether they offer schizoid techno, weirdo house or full-blown noise, they execute their material like pros. Teardrops is their new LP and it most certainly falls under their more extravagant side; it's an album that delivers twelve raucous and unfriendly sonic experiments. The crew have conjured a deeply singular noise album because instead of relying on the same old tricks of distorting synth sounds as much as possible, they've approached this particular release from a doom metal perspective. This is proper nose bleed gear, and if you're of the sensitive disposition then this might be a little explicit for your tastes. We fucking love it.
