IK Multimedia Syntronik Virtual Synthesizer (USB stick)

Synthesizer software instrument with 17 synth models & 38 effects - Mac/PC
Notes: Syntronik is a cutting-edge virtual synthesizer that raises the bar in sound quality and flexibility thanks to the most advanced sampling techniques combined with a new hybrid sample and modelling synthesis engine. Syntronik includes 17 amazing instruments, available as a collection or separately, with over 2,000 preset sounds covering a wide selection from 38 of the most iconic to ultra-rare and painstakingly multi-sampled vintage synthesizers. Syntronik's synthesis engine goes well beyond traditional sampling thanks to a brand new analog modelled filter section created with the utmost expertise from IK, the pioneer in virtual circuit modelling. This is coupled with exclusive DRIFT technology to accurately reproduce the behaviour of oscillators from real hardware synths. All of this combined with an effects section that is unrivalled in the world of virtual instruments along with advanced features like 4-part layers, splits and arpeggiators make Syntronik the ultimate source of inspiration with the widest palette of synthesizer sounds ranging from exact reproductions of the originals to sounds never heard before that will stand out from the crowd in productions covering any genre and style.

Capturing Synthesizer DNA:
When it comes to accurately reproducing the sound of timeless machines like Moog, Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, ARP, Roland and Yamaha vintage synthesizers, sampling their sound-generating oscillators is the only way to ensure truly authentic sounds. IK selected some of the most sought-after synthesizers, sourced only the best instruments from private collections, and painstakingly sampled them. Sound designers worked hand in hand with software developers to take full advantage of this 'synthesizer DNA', with the goal of offering a highly flexible instrument that would maintain the exact sonic character of the originals while extending their creative potential even further. IK have captured multiple round robins of single oscillators, oscillator combinations (including sync and FM sweeps) and after more than 70,000 samples and 50GB later, Syntronik is ready to set a new standard in the world of virtual instruments.

Hybrid Synthesis Architecture:
In order to achieve highly flexible sound manipulation while maintaining the same exact sound of the original hardware, IK evolved their synth engine to include circuit-level filter models of 4 of the best sounding machines of all time: Moog transistor ladder, (found in the Minimoog and Modular Moog), Roland's IR3109 chip (found in the Jupiter-8 and Juno-60), the famous Curtis CEM3320 chip (found in the Prophet-5 and Oberheim OB-Xa) and the Oberheim SEM state variable filter.

This hybrid architecture allows for a pristine reproduction of the most critical section of every synthesizer. Plus, every filter is selectable within each included synthesizer, enabling users to create their own combinations by mixing or matching at will, like using a Moog filter on an Oberheim oscillator to produce entirely new original sounds that stand out from the crowd! Syntronik also provides powerful digital filters like Formant and Phase filters that can take the analog source oscillators into new sonic dimensions.

DRIFT Technology:
Syntronik also includes all new DRIFT technology that breathes more life into the sampled oscillators themselves. Typically sample-based synthesizers have the limitation of having always the same exact sample attack, something that does not happen in their true hardware counterparts. IK's DRIFT technology varies the phase, colour and pitch of the sampled oscillators to keep them moving just like the real analog oscillators do. Much more than simple detuning or even multiple-source modulation, DRIFT emulates the way real analog circuits behave over time. The result is the unmistakable sound of analog that is the origin of any classic synthesizer sound.

Instant inspiration:
In order to get the most out of Syntronik, you don't need to be an expert in synth programming. In fact, all models share consistent easy-to-use controls that will make custom sound tailoring and editing a breeze, even for 'non-geeks'. IK have also designed 17 dedicated interfaces which look and feel like the original panels to make your sound tweaking experience even more inspirational.

When it comes to high-quality effects, IK's expertise is simply indisputable. Syntronik comes with 38 mind-blowing effects which are derived from our best-selling T-RackS mix and mastering suite and AmpliTube guitar workstation. They have also designed some new ones like the famous Ensemble Chorus, for a total number of effects that you won't find in any other vintage synth collection of its kind. 5 effects can be simultaneously inserted on every instrument via a new attractive 'lunchbox-style' interface that allows for an immediate visualization and editing of every parameter from within a single, convenient interface.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: Wayne Gardiner is a veteran of the deep house scene, although this release on Nervous is one of only four 12"s he issued under the Classic Man moniker back in the early 90s. Now Nervous have revived and remastered the tracks for the modern deep house crowd, and they sound as fresh and funky as ever. "Rapid Winds" represents the mellowest side of Gardiner's sound, while both mixes of "Keepin On" show off what a skill he had for triggering cheeky samples in a serious way, not least on the "Hot New York Mix". With a classic garage swing moving the drums throughout every inch of this vinyl, this is a reissue to be celebrated by any lovers of true deep house.

Review: In a taxi en route to an airport, Gerd Janson mentioned to Midland that he might have some demos for the label that he had been working on with fellow Frankfurter, Shan. What resulted were a pair of tracks that perfectly nail the vibe and what the label is about, 'soundtracking the moments of the night and day when everyone on the dancefloor feels like a family.' Legend has it that in 2015, Midland watched Janson close Berlin's infamous Panorama Bar. The way he played on the night, the energy levels he maintained in the room altogether inspired him to write some music influenced by the experience. The tracks that followed were the first release on Regraded and fast forward to this, the third release: it all seems to have come full circle.

"Power Dance" is funky, lively, a little jazzy, but still left of field enough to remain interested and surprised with each new turn of the 4/4. "Power Beats" is the instrumental alternative, this one bringing through the strings a lot more, and throwing down one mighty bass to rule the floor. Oh, and out of nowhere there's a little change in tone to freshen things up!

"Scorpio Man Theme" is all slinky 70s cinematica with a wry nod towards Lalo Schifrin while "Journey To The Bottom" adopts a more languid perspective with slower beats, a smouldering groove and a flute line that takes us right down to the bottom of our souls and right back up again. Review: We should perhaps rename the Glenview label Glennview for their latest release in honour of the fact they've scored a debut from famed Chicago producer Glenn Underground. When you have a record from the Strictly Jaz Unit founder in your mitts, you know you are holding quality and that's certainly the case with the richly rewarding Smoke 12". From the moment you touch start on your 1210, this record breathes deep house authenticity with the title track a luscious exercise in melodic and soulful deepness that goes in on the Rhodes! An accompanying "Beats" version of "Smoke" offers a masterclass in stripped down rhythms from Mr Glenn Crocker whilst the B Side is dedicated to "The Soft Drink" which is both sensual and has a killer broken rhythm track that would prick the ears of Dego or Theo Parrish.

Review: Berg Audio according to its online profile is "a dub techno oriented label finding its inspiration in the lost monuments of the soviet era". This various artists EP inaugurates the fresh imprint and what a great start. Man of the moment iO (Mulen) kicks things off on side A with "The Kingdom Of Darkness" which follows on with his breaks driven style and immaculate production standards as always; definitely much more dub techno than minimal house this time around. KW aka the man from Uranus Kris Wadsworth serves up the liquid groove of "Aquarius" complete with some serious 808 bounce. On the flip the man from Guestrow, Andre Kronert (who presents the label's next release) gives us the Fachwerk style dub techno of "The Architect" while Swiss producer The Idealist serves up the sexy and slinky deep house of "Starflow" which reminds us of late noughties grooves by Quarion or Slowhouse.

  4. Silicon Scally - "Das Haus" (6:23)
Review: Freshly minted German electro label Innerspace has recruited some serious talent for their first release. On the A-side you'll find a pair of tracks from experienced Finnish twosome Morphology: the wild and psychedelic acid-electro romp that is "Conductive Force", and the outer-space-on-LSD madness of the similarly impressive, if a little more becalmed, "Inversion Layer". Electro survivor Carl Finlow handles the flipside, once again donning the Silicon Scally alias he first used way back in 1998. He begins by unfurling a pitch-perfect, Drexciya-inspired chunk of hustling deep space electro, before opting for a darker, tougher, acid-flecked sound on the electro body-jacker "Das Haus". As you'd expect, both are superb.

Having told us about the scientific art of storytelling many years ago, here he returns with his own beautiful yarn about the legend that is Johnny Hammond. Other tales include the sultry, dusky Balearic jam "The Tone" where fretless bass and fluttering brushed drums are the order of the day. Finally "The Place Inside" takes us right out to shore with soft vocal harmonies, light keys and a sense of sunset magic. Salinas crew this one's for you.

What comes across is how consistent the sound is, whenever an individual jam was made. The same heavy-lidded melodics and easy-funking rhythm sections prevail across all nine cuts here, at times hitting the uplifting pace of "Vertigo" or heading into the meditative pastures of "Sea Bird", but always maintaining that quintessential Vibraphone feeling. The diggers will be happy to snag the reissued tracks as well as discovering completely fresh material from Rome's premier deep house institution.

The first in the series sees Khan and brother Cem (aka Jammin Unit and 1/2 of the legendary Air Liquide) unleashing a torrent of acid-tinged jack in the form of 'You Make Me Function' and 'Fun House'. Drummy madness for the most unhinged hours of the dance. Pressed on clear vinyl and bearing the original Temple logo as homage to the label.

Review: Emotional Response again teams up with Meda Fury and Sad City to present an EP of remixes from the acclaimed debut album, Shapes In Formation. Enlisting a killer tag-team of DJ Nature, HOLOVR and Herron to bring their own retakes of Gary Caruth's music, arrives with justified anticipation.

The success of Sad City's debut opus was a deserved conclusion to a journey across third world ambient, found sound samples and jazz-touched beats. All are reworked and expanded here while retaining the artist's all encompassing atmospheric oeuvre.

First Milo Johnson dons his DJ Nature moniker for two mixes of Steady Jam. The stand out of the album for many, it seemed right to request Milo's skills to push the sample-based loops to a deep dance floor. Rolling congas, skipping hats and the teasing, soulful melodies come together to work their magic. Vocal and Dub are crafted and cut as one long-form take for the more adventurous, this is dub-disco for the today's real (to reel) entertainers.

Side two is given over to rising names in HOLOVR and Herron. With releases on Opal Tapes, Further and Firecracker Recordings, Jimmy Billingham 303-infused sound is perfect in reshaping Caruth's trip that is Pace, Movements I-IV. Building slowly with trademark 909 meets acid, kick eventually arrives to take the remix beyond head nodding to swinging minds and hearts.

The EP closes with a perfect dismantle and rebuild by Manchester's Herron. A man of talents, Sam Lewis is pushing his City's cultural landscape via the Soup Kitchen venue, co-running the on-point Meandyou Records, while still having time to record solo as Herron and for Hinge Finger as one half of CO/R, alongside label head Joy Orbison. The glitch beats, drone synthesis and orchestral vocal snatches of Rain fuse and percolate in the mind's eye. Sad City. Reshaped in transformations.

Review: KGB's 1991 cut "Detroit 909" has long been considered something of an Italian classic, in no small part thanks to its unique fusion of dream house and Motor City futurism. Unsurprisingly, Cosmic Rhythm chief Cosmic Garden is a big fan, hence this 12" of 2017 remixes. His version (A2) is particularly wonderful, featuring as it does a long, ambient house style intro, bubbly synth bassline and lashings of drum machine shuffle. That said, the chunkier, warmer and dreamier Rhythm Sectors Mix is also superb, while the ultra-deep and tactile Loss of Gravity Mix, which features soft-touch breakbeats and some chiming melody lines, is little less than stunning. The Rhythm of Paradise Mix (B1) is arguably closest in style and sound to KGB's peerless original version.

Review: While Amon "Aybee" Bazile rarely puts a foot wrong, there was arguably a time when his releases were a little too frequent to register with buyers. Thankfully, he's simmered down in recent years, seemingly content to just release the cream of his studio productions. Certainly, Nexus shows the producer at the top of his game. Check the deep and spacey hypnotism of "The Scroll", where dreamy chord progressions seemingly float around an analogue rich deep house groove, and the broken techno headiness of "Veger". Both bubble along at a house tempo, but draw huge influence from Motor City futurism. Perhaps best of all, though, is opener "In The", a rolling, bongo-laden saunter into life-affirming outer-space deep house blessed with a rich and warming bassline.

  4. Submersible Machines - "If You Know How I Feel" (6:17)
Review: As you might expect, the latest multi-artist release from Texas Underground Recordings boasts a quartet of deep techno treats from producers based in the Lone Star State. Brooks Mosher impresses with the sweet and cylical synthesizer melodies and bubbling electronic percussion of "Magic Hat", before the mighty Convextion joins the dots between melancholic techno, electro and bustling IDM on EP standout "Summer Indoors". ILL76 injects a little more forthright energy via the bumpy but angular drums and mind-altering late night riffs of "New Year's Night", while Submersible Machines head straight for the Motor City on the classic deep futurism of closer "If You Know How I Feel". Stellar stuff, all told.

Review: Florian Kupfer and Luke Wyatt (Torn Hawk) met through the Ron Morelli Long Island matchmaking service that has done such a global favor by producing relationships and collaborations between previously isolated weirdos all around the world.

As solo artists they have produced work for some of the most adventurous labels around, including LIES , Technicolour, and Rush Hour's No 'Label' imprint.

Now they join forces for this haunting and darkly hilarious trip.

Candy-mongering ghosts of Halloweens past drag chains down dim hallways, punctuating the gloom with the clank of metal on wet concrete.

Who's that knocking on your door? Just a couple of 16 year-old boys wearing face paint with fake blood coming out of their mouths...hungry for candy.

Review: London based club night and newly formed label Snap Crackle & Pop's third releases comes in the form of a dark take on new wave influenced techno from Berlin based New Yorker Curses. Side A kicks off with a hypnotic techno stomper Another View which playfully tips its hat to early electro albeit through a visor of coldwave inspired guitars. Together In The Dark delves into even darker territores with ice cold organs reaching for the light through the grinding ambient yet groovy undertones. On the B-side Inga Mauer ramps up the dancefloor tension with her machine like acid rework pulsating and crashing urgently Together In The Dark, whilst The Golden Filter turn out a low slung trip of brooding synths and haunting vocals before cascading down the rabbit hole in a swell of industrial motorik beats and percussive explosions in their take on Another View.

  5. Heschdolby (6:01)
Review: Zurich outfit Les Points have previously impressed by developing a distinctively lo-fi, do-it-yourself style of tech-house. That style comes to the fore on this Eklo-released 12", with each of the five tracks bristling with the sounds of outboard hardware and spontaneous sound processing. They begin with the acid-flecked, electro/techno fusion of "ProjectErzame", before showcasing the crunchy drum machine handclaps, chiming melodies and bustling acid bass of "IDM778". Elsewhere, they successfully go deeper and woozier via the head-nodding hum of "Projektsektork", pay a whirlwind visit to the Motor City on the unpronounceable "Projektjezmueschlueggend" (think early Model 500 dragged through a hedge backwards), and reach for the stars on EP highlight "Hescdolby".

Review: It's been some five years since we last heard from TBD, the alias used by old pals Lee Douglas and Justin Van Der Volgen for their occasional trips into sleazy, techno-influenced, basement-bothering, jack-track territory. Even by their standards, "Below" is deliciously filthy - a throbbing, pulsating fusion of rave-inspired electronics, dark build-ups, freakish acid lines and thunderous low-end bounce. Old pal DJ Kent (AKA producer Kento Sasaki) dons the occasional Backwoods pseudonym on the flipside remix, delivering a similarly dark but more electro-influenced interpretation that draws more heavily on the original's alien funk electronics.
