Review: Long time jazz wayfarer Nick Woodmansey emerges from the shadows once more with a limited 300-only 45. Two sides shrouded with his signature eastern haze, "Ominous Shanti" sees the horns gradually melting in the heat while the intricately laced percussion holds the groove together. "Black Enchantment" lollops with more of a new soul step as lilting horns rise over a bubblesome strolling bassline before switching into a deliciously cosmic finale. Grab it while it's hot.

Review: Its first reissue since this absolute stone cold soulful house classic was released in 2006, the return of Peven's "Stuck" to wax is long, long, long overdue! We all know that lo-fi funk backing groove, we all know the infectious, party-hollering way those hi-hats kick in bars later than they really should and we all know Peven's midas vocal tones. Genuine magic on 12 inches; we've been waiting for this one for a long time.

  3. Nitrogen (6:05)
  4. Thirty Four (5:27)
Review: Eric Cloutier launched Palinoia last year with a single of his own, but now he's turned to Berlin mainstays Exercise One to lay down some of their trademark psychoactive machine music for the second installment. "Heptagon" sports metallic synth notes clanging out over a freight train of techno drums, while "Prism" takes a more nimble approach to twist out its various synthetic squeaks. "Nitrogen" is a warmer proposition, placing the emphasis on chords and melodies while still aiming squarely at the dancefloor. "Thirty Four" finds the duo veering away from the 4/4 dogma to deliver a captivating kind of broken techno in a soundscape loaded with tension and ominous empty space.

Review: Robert Hood's gospel house and disco referencing Floorplan project returns on his revered M-Plant imprint with these four fierce, funky and downright powerful dancefloor bombs. Starting off on the A side with the tough, rhythmic and rolling DJ tool "Let The Church" which is interspersed with the mandatory diva vocal for added hands in the air effect: this one really brings it! Next up the is the uplifting and life affirming church celebration (techno style) on "Made Up In My Mind" which utilises one woman's powerful preaching at a sermon to magnificent effect. On the flip is more typical M-Plant faire, with the hypnotic and cyclical adrenaline of "He Can Save You" which is more suited to dark and sweaty warehouse space His daughter and newly appointed DJ partner Lyric Hood's mix of "Never Grow Old" from 2013's tremendous Paradise LP is a fantastic reshape of the now classic tune.

Review: There's a case to say that Folamour has yet to put a foot wrong in 2017. Over the year to date, he's released killer EPs on All City, Moonrise Hill Material and Roots For Bloom, as well as contributing fine tracks to a number of other 12" singles. Predictably, this outing on Church is also hotter than the sun. "Jazz Session For Future People" is a killer chunk of life-affirming jazz-house bounciness that offers a near perfect balance between rolling dancefloor funk and intricate musicality, while "Melophrenia" is a supremely smoky slab of ultra-deep wooziness. Arguably best of all, though, is the hip-hop tempo synthesizer Balearica of "Janvier In Bed", which may well be his most tactile and glassy-eyed cut to date.

Review: Who is this deep space stranger? Who are Folklore? What's in the water in Toulouse? Because the city is churning out some impeccable bass talents right now... And we suspect some of them are involved in this mysterious project. Each track tells a different tale in a subtly circular fashion; "Kingwise" shimmers into a light, breezy UKG-style two-step, "Untitled" cranks up on channel one with its low and slow dub techno mysticism while "Flat 8" leans back on an icy Alaska-style jungle roll-out. Finally "Version 2" takes us back over familiar chords but does so with a sublime dub beat and sense-blurring clipped synths. The music has all the answers.

Review: New York City's Francis Harris and Parisian Anthony Collins return as Frank & Tony with the Odes EP. This will be the final collaboration on their esteemed Scissor & Thread imprint. Kicking off proceedings with the classic, Windy City deep house sound of "Procession" which will hypnotise you in evocative style. The title track up next is truly bittersweet and melancholic; taking its cues once again from Chicago legends like Larry Heard or DaRand Land. Speaking of which, the latter is up next for a collaboration with the pair on B side offering "This Time" where the Deep4life alumnus injects some truly breathtaking and seductive deepness into the track which compliments their dusty rhythms and smoky synth textures. Finally, "Surface Prelude" is the EP's most optimistic moment; this uplifting jam is perfect to play as the last track, right as the sunlight creeps in through the blinds up at that Bushwick loft party on Sunday morning.

Review: Denver based Gila is a producer who has been supported by Benji B on BBC Radio 1 from the outset of his solo career. First making waves as part of US rap group Gorgeous Children, he now debuts on Benji's Deviation label with a new six track EP. It has been stated that Benji's said support on Radio 1 first alerted XL Recordings to his intricate and abstract beat making: which is most certainly on show here. His 2016 debut EP titled Genkidama saw him score a support slot at Metro Boomin's sold out show at Koko in London and earmark him as one of the year's most exciting breakout acts. Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Hyperdub boss Kode 9 have had the pleasure of playing his tracks. A natural fit at Deviation, the Pick Six EP marks the best yet from Gila: a producer very much on the rise.

Review: Perennially paranoid technoid subvert Grand Mal X makes his debut on Rivet's rising Kess Kill. As always, it's a submersing affair that begins on a slow, steady, treacle-like dirge before developing and mutating into a narrative that's just as new romantic as it is futuristic and nihilistic. From the swampy, metallic barbed poetry of "The Trip" to the looming soundscapes and foreboding forecast of "Rabbit", Grand Mal X has painted a unique picture once again.

Review: Next up on Aus Music is the welcome return of a label regular: Marquis Hawkes. Having released four EPs on Will Saul's label thus far, he makes his return in the form of these blazing, floor-focused two tracks which sit neatly with previous outings on the label. "The Basement Is Burning" takes its name from the time of an electrical fire in the artist's home, which resulted in him and his family being evacuated from a fifth floor balcony. This soulful and life affirming classic house jam is geared for some sure hands in the air moment, with its addictive church organ melody, tough rhythm patterns and evocative strings all doing the business proper over its glorious nine minute duration. On the flip "Tower Block Boogie" is a tough and funky hard house jam, fuelled by dusty/overdriven drums and hypnotic disco loops that are filtered to perfection.

Review: This tasty 12" marks the vinyl debut of HDSN, a producer who first pricked our consciousness last year via a digital-only EP of soulful and deep house bombs on King Street Sounds. This four-tracker is a little more disco-centric in tone, with the producer combining samples from a wealth of classic and lesser-known 1970s anthems with his own beefy basslines and skipping house percussion. It's an undeniably summery and floor-friendly affair from start to finish, with highlights including the breezy, filter-sporting thrills of "Don't Hold Back", which includes a killer breakbeat breakdown and colossal drop midway through, the Soundstream-ish disco-house heaviness of string-laden killer "Heavy Rotation" and the deeper, richer goodness of closer "Sacrifice".

Review: Chicagoan DJ/producer Jamie 3:26 has long been regarded as one of the edit scene's brightest talents, with fine outings on Local Talk and Lumberjacks in Hell only enhancing his credentials. Happily, this two-tracker on G.A.M.M could well be his strongest release to date. A-side "Blessing" is a brilliantly teased-out revision of a stomping disco-soul anthem, which rises, falls and rises again magnificently over 12 mesmerizing minutes. Arguably even better, though, is his Ron Hardy inspired rework of a well-known Italo-disco cover version of Led Zepellin's "Whole Lotta Love". The Chicagoan expertly works the track hard for nearly 15 minutes, alternating between sleazy vocal passages and the throbbing, sleazy instrumentation.

  4. Jerry Seaman - "In My Dreams" (6:30)
Review: Apart from the obvious Discogs mafia, the Red Ember label from Western Australia has been largely forgotten in the bottomless pit that is the house continuum. First active in the late 90s, anything on this mighty label has been a rare find ever since, and all should bow to any underground DJ pulling out one of its infamous 12s from their bag. The label have reactivated their senses but, crucially, instead of simply reissuing their gems the label heads have decided to put out new music to reflect their golden days. We see that as a wise choice indeed. This is the second instalment of new sound, Deepsounds Two, and Joe Jones kicks it off with the chunky, mid-tempo slam of "She Said", an elegantly poised, piano-led banger that's followed by the more bouncy percussion twist of the equally suave "Walker" from Wade Norris. The B-side is led by Nuno Azevedo and his "Deep Inside My Mind" charmer, a deeper, more jazzy house episode that makes way for the rolling, Mr Fingers-style bass of "In My Dreams" by Jerry Seaman. Excellent.

Review: Following initial appearances on Bahnsteig 23, Jonny 5 returns on the Pleasure Wave label with more of that well-travelled, groovesome voodoo for all manner of sonic wayfarers. "Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.
