Review: These days, we're all familiar with Jan Jelinek's trademark brand of dusty, dubbed-out, jazz-sampling downtempo explorations. That wasn't the case when Loop Finding Jazz Records, his acclaimed debut album, first appeared back in 2001. It has since become an in-demand item, making this reissue more than handy. It remains a fine album; a blazed shuffle through a sonic world where dub techno, ambient, minimal house, jazz and downtempo grooves and seductive vinyl crackle merge into one intoxicating hybrid sound. It's not showy and over-the-top, but rather becalmed and subtly seductive. In other words, it's still a brilliant album and if you don't own already own a copy, you should add this to your cart sharpish.

  1. Track 1 (10:02)
  2. Track 2 (9:33)
Review: The people behind the Yoyaku studio, record store and stable of labels really don't like giving too much away. Their occasional Hostom series, which launched back in 2015, sticks rigidly to their principle of never naming the producers behind their 12" releases. Interestingly, what's on offer here is warmer, richer, looser and more positive than many of the Parisian organisation's releases. A-side "Track 1" boasts elongated chords and bustling synth melodies rising above a chunky, swinging, pleasingly fluid drum machine groove. It has dancefloor weight, but also a thrillingly loved-up vibe. Flipside "Track 2" has a slightly more low-slung, bass-heavy feel, but retains the attractive tunefulness present on the A-side. Balearic tech-house anyone?

Review: Another royal re-edit by the one and only KON, here we find him going to town on 1974 soul classic from Pat Tandy's The Pretenders. Flipping the arrangement so each section gets a chance to shine (notably the raffish walking bassline and sweeping strings) the lead remix pays full respect to the original while giving it a completely fresh new life. Complete with the extended original for the more purest fans, KON's delivered gold once again.

Review: Second time around for Peven Everett's "Put Your Back Into It", which has become an in-demand record since it first hit stores 10 years ago. This official reissue replicates the track listing of the original pressing. Everett's original version is an undulating, soft-spun deep house delight, with the producer adding his own superb, soul-soaked versions to a backing track rich in shuffling, floor-friendly drums, warm bass and jazzy keys. On the flipside, remixer Quentin Harris gives the track a little more bass-heavy bump, employing slightly heavier drums and some rich chords, whist making more of Everett's impeccable Fender Rhodes work.

Review: This limited edition new reissue series from Mukatsuku singles only label focuses on timeless tracks have not yet made it on to 7 inch to date. Both sides are indeed heavy and no doubt you have experienced some of them on a long player. Side one is from the 1975 Fantasy Records masterpiece Vibes of Truth from Three Pieces and "Self Dealin'". A nice little slice of funky goodness, strings and all: it's nice to see this tune on the format. The flip, is another jazz funk classic that has always gotten maximum spins on the LP. Johnny Hammond Smith's "Tell Me What To Do" from the brilliant Gears LP, a record that has definitely not been overlooked. This full length gave us "Shifting Gears", "Los Conquistadores Chocolates", "Can't We Smile", and more. Originally on Milestone, it has been a classic for years so a welcome release for todays 45 market. 3. Em Vee - "Give Me Your Love"
Review: REPRESS ALERT: This time on transparent vinyl. Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko, with the Rare Wiri boss hogging the A Side. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

Review: Boogie badman Leroy Burgess was responsible for some of the greatest disco and electrofunk jams of the early '80s. Even so, few were quite as special as "(You've Got) That Something", a 1981 killer that distilled all that was good about his productions - those distinctive cowbell patterns, life-affirming slap bass, spiraling synths, hard-wired disco guitars and one of his finest vocal performances - in one essential, 11-minute package. As on the original '81 12", it comes backed with the similarly impressive "Dancing Into The Stars", whose melodic bassline is arguably even better than that found on the A-side. If you don't already own a copy of the original pressing, this reissue should be an essential purchase.

Review: Given that Warp has finally bowed to pressure and reissued James Stinson's sole album under The Other People Place guise (2001's peerless Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe), there was an inevitability about this 12" getting the re-press treatment. It first came out on Clone back in 2002, and paired a fine Stinson solo effort with a rare outing for DJ Stingray as Mystic Tribe A.I. Stinson's "Sorrow & A Cup of Joe" is a thing of rare beauty: a spacey, 4/4 electro cut blessed with bubbly electronics, alien chord progressions, heavy sub-bass and a fluttering, melancholic vocal sample. On the flip, Stingray's "Telepathic Production" is a dreamy chunk of outer space warmth driven by chunky hip-hop breakbeats and an undulating bassline.

There's naturally plenty to get excited about, from the piano-driven goodtime house grooves of Crackazat's floor-filling "What You're Feeling", to the boogie and jazz-funk inspired space-house of Opolopo's brilliant "Put Your Cap On". Review: Lumberjacks In Hell just keep on trucking, this time calling upon the legendary skills of Karizma in setting their latest A side alight. "Work It Out" is a fiery slice of gospel choppery, whipping up a fevered line in vocal insistence that hardly needs a rhythm section to make you move, but still has the necessary goods underneath the hood. Marcel Vogel follows a similar tact on "I Got Jesus", spacing the jam out and working a bit more groove, but certainly tapping into the same spiritually enhanced vein. Karizma then returns to make an aptly named "Stomp Dub" of the track, rounding off an absolute beast of a party record.

On the A side "Hot Pants" is an edit of the original track and the "dub beats version" (found only on the Urban release in 1988) starts with the drum break. On the flip we have got "Mama Feelgood" which has heavier drums and the instrumental intro and outro.

Review: Burnski and Jon Woodall's Constant Black sublabel follows up a strong opening gambit from Noha with this single from Michael James. It's a refined exercise in minimal house with plenty of warmth and character woven in between the sleek, shuffling beats. "010101" bubbles away on melodic delay ripples and slow drifting pads, while "020202" gets into freakier territory with its nocturnal sound set. "030303" is the dreamiest jam on the record, reaching skywards with its soft synth tones while that insistent groove rolls away underneath. As far as classy minimal house goes, it doesn't get any better than this.

Review: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Review: On the back of Kompakt's expansive retrospective of his work under the Gas alias, the essential Box, Wolfgang Voigt has decided to deliver a new album - his first for 17 years. Predictably, Narkopop is as cinematic, widescreen and densely layered as anything the German ambient producer has done to date. Over 11 spellbinding tracks, Voigt blends field recordings and droning electronics with sweeping, almost orchestral movements, swirling melodic cycles, and occasional forays into rhythmic hypnotism. The result is a collection of "wall of sound" ambient compositions that does a terrific job tiptoeing the fine lines between both grandiosity and intimacy, and joy and pain. In a word: essential.

Review: Delano Smith's "A Message For The DJ" was first released in a distant 2005 haze, but the EP has remained a classic ever since. That's because it's a prime example of the combined powers of old-school Detroit techno and more contemporary waves of European deep house; Smith is a master of this artform, and this particular release, out on Detroit's own Still Music, has the ability to please all sorts of listeners and club-dwellers. The lead tune is full-bodied groove, taking inspiration from the US' heritage, but taking the percussion that one bit closer to what many would term 'minimal'. "Inception Dub" is just as classy and laid-back, a dreamy house assemblage with seductive jazzy nuances, leaving main man Jimpster to remix "A Message For The DJ" into a more driving, more charging tech-house monster that is perhaps the pinnacle of the entire subgenre. A piece of contemporary dance music history, right here...

Review: Paul 'Mudd' Murphy has form when it comes to putting together must-have vinyl box sets. A few years back, he brought the Originals series of Balearic compilations to a close with a fine box set. Now, to celebrate the 10th birthday of his Claremont 56 label, he's put together another lavishly produced, five-vinyl set, this time made up of brand new or previously unheard material. As you'd expect, highlights come thick and fast, from the dubbed-out quirkiness of Holgar Czukay's "Music To Be Murdered By" and the rubbery electrofunk of Phil Mison's remix of FreshRo's "Pacific State", to the samba-boogie of Jex Opolis's remix of Paraiso, and deep space Balearic bliss of Leo Cecranti's "Andromeda Bound". Throw in killer reworks from Lexx, Bjorn Torske, Ron Trent, Larry Heard, Emperor Machine, and Murphy himself, and you have an essential collection.

Review: Given his length of service, it's rather surprising to find that this is officially his debut album. If we were being picky, we'd say it's more of a compilation, featuring as it does a range of hard to find, in demand classics from the Motor City producer's vast discography. These have all been re-mastered to guarantee louder cuts. It's naturally packed with highlights, from the luscious minor key chords, jazz-funk bass and sneaky vocal samples of "The Jazz Republic" and thrilling peak-time stomp of "Dance", to the jazzy piano flourishes, loose-limbed beats and starry electronics of "Groove Box". Also worth checking is the fireside heat of bongo-laden beatdown shuffler "Mathematics From The Jazz Republic" and the sax-laden disco-house bump of closer "Flashback '78".

Review: It's becoming something of a cliche to describe tech-house tracks as "bouncy", but there's no denying that "Planet Pan", the lead cut from Giammarco Orsini's latest EP, is rubbery and boisterous. The drum track and bassline both doff a cap to the skipping grooves of 4.4 UK garage, though the musical elements surrounding them - spacey chords, bleeping melody lines, and so on - both scream "techno". Elsewhere, the experienced Italian producer melds undulating TB-303 acid lines with a smooth, Motor City influenced tech-house groove on "Divenire", before layering robotic electronics and minor key chords on top of sprightly drum machine beats on pleasing B-side workout "Any Robots Here".

Review: This dinked 7" features extended edits of two break-digging funk faves. On the A-side, the un-credited re-editor takes his or her scalpel to "Hot Wheels", a relatively well-known cut by Angelo Badalamenti and Al Elias under the Badder Than Evil alias. Wisely concentrating on the killer drums, wah-wah guitar licks and rising horn lines, the edit extends the track in all the right places for increased dancefloor pressure. On the flip you'll find a hot-to-trot extension of The Chosen Few's 1976 single "Funky Buttercup", which wisely extends the breaks for hip-hop DJ use. The break extensions sound slightly tighter than the original version, but the track has lost none of its instinctive swing.

Review: The Two Diggers project has been steadily increasing in productivity since first emerging in 2015, and now it makes the move to Jack's House Recordings with this no-nonsense three-tracker. "Head Trip" keeps things simple but utterly effective with a crisp beat, subby bassline and catchy lead arpeggio, while "Down The Street" takes a groovier, albeit equally stripped back, approach. "You Are My Groove" spreads itself across the B-side with a brighter disposition that lets warm and soulful samples slip in between the classic house rhythms. If you're looking for straight-up jams that will do the business on the floor, look no further.

Review: Simone Vescovo, better known as Simoncino, kicks off another venture for a regular haunt of his, Sydney's Thug Records, under the Ron Jason moniker. The invitation of Larry Heard on remix duties should tell you something about this release, and the classic deep house tones that come drifting out of the assembled tracks certainly take their cue from Heard's most tender moments. At each turn the beats feel stiff but soft, giving up as much space as possible to the warming bass lines, chiming keys and ethereal pads, and between the originals and Heard's two remixes there's little to tell between them, which should come as something of a compliment for Vescovo.

Predictably, it's a thrilling set, packed with undeniably Balearic moments rich in kaleidoscopic synths, rich boogie bass, jammed out electrofunk solos, tapped out drum machine rhythms and breezy, summer's afternoon chords. While the overriding vibe is laidback and sun-kissed, there are naturally occasional sprints towards the dancefloor, with the Afro-tinged Balearic boogie of "First Stomp" and exotic "Mt Belzoni" standing out. As debut albums go, Ravine is something of a peach.

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.

Review: Subb-An and Adam Shelton may be plenty busy with their own endeavours, but they still know how to bring it home to roost on their own One Records. This time around they've both turned to the same vocalist, Isis Salam, to deliver some insistent instruction atop their lean and mean productions. Subb-An's "Self Control" is a cool and deadly workout that places the emphasis on the bass and places Salam's classic speech at the front of the mix. Shelton gets into a more jacking frame of mind on "Only Now", whipping up a raw Chicago flavour to devastating effect.

Review: A couple of years back, Rafael Top Secret - a selector known for digging deep for inspiration - delivered a tidy re-edit of "Sekele I Like It", a previously little-known Afro-boogie cut by French artist Robert "Bobby" Helms. Copies of the 1980 album it came from, Lay Down, Girl, now go for serious money, prompting this licensed reissue. Helms' brilliant, horn-totin' original is accompanied by another cut from that album, "Feet On The Ground" - a straight-up disco affair - and two new flipside remixes. Baptman and Betino's "Philly Vibe" mix of "Sekele I Like" is a largely instrumental interpretation that includes some killer electric piano solos, with Vas Moody's "Feet On The Ground" remix taking that track in a tightly-wound dub disco direction.

Review: Over the course of the last decade, dub-soaked musical fusionist Lord Echo has delivered a string of fine releases, including two top-notch albums. Given his fine track record, it's perhaps unsurprising that Soundway has snapped up the Kiwi producer's third full-length excursion, Harmonies. It features contributions from a posse of guest collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - and giddily infuses reggae and rocksteady with disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, Afro-beat, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, all told, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Review: Just when you think Pepe Bradock can't take us to new plains, along comes a new alias with a new vision. Raw futuristic jazz is the theme (as is often the case with Pepe) as we're eased in nicely with harmonic broken shuffles of "Willplayasong4u" before being plunged into trippy data chirps on "KM Zero" and square-pushing oddities on "@#$*?! Square Tones". We come out the other side learned and woken the jitterbug, sample-heavy psychedelic bump-funk of "Pepe XXX". 24th century business.

Review: Coming from Golden Teacher alumni, you know that this techno 12" on Fragrant Harbour is going to sport some interesting sonic characteristics. General Ludd doesn't disappoint, with "What" marching out on a devilishly subby kick pattern over which all kinds of post-punk baiting noises splash and splay. "Later Last Night" gets into a more syncopated groove, but that rough and ready quality is still there in abundance. "Making Strange (Locked Groove)" meanwhile heads towards bass music territory with its urgent pace, booming drum machine percussion and bashy demeanour. White Ghost is a stark record focused on rhythms, but as tools go these are some damn fine sounding ones.

Review: Famously used in both Married To The Mob and, more poignantly, on Silence Of The Lambs, "Goodbye Horses" was Q Lazzarus's only hit and a mystery has surrounded her ever since. The subject of many reissues and versions, this is the first time it's been included with a selection of demos which add to the song's mystique as we're taken through various late 80s studio twists that teeter on the dynamics proto-house. "Tears Of Fear" and "Transformation" add more twists to Q's tale as we're fired through a cannon of synth wave, alt-boogie and full-on, lighters-out balladry. A fantastic piece of history from Mon Amie right here.

"Jardim Zoologico" fuses electro boogie with Afrofunk with healthy measures of cosmic polish while "Tao" is a straight up Balearic gem that sparkles with sentiment and horizontal soul. Only ever released on Portuguese label Valentim De Carvalho, this reissue is over 30 years overdue.

As the title No Computers Necessary would suggest, this is classically-rooted house music with all the charm the hardware process provides. Davis' productions are bright, melodic creations with rock solid grooves and strong hooks for all kinds of good times, with B2 track "Floating" standing out with its strafing acid line punching out into a decidedly ethereal soundscape.

Review: BOOM! New King Street house sampler to satisfy all of your dancefloor needs and, looks who it is, our main man Kerri "Kaoz" Chandler at the middle of it all, doing what he does best. Originally released in 1999, Chandler's "Heal My Heart" is a soulful, magnetic house charmer full of loving vibes and euphoria, driven by Treasa Diva Fenni's wonderful vocals - the sort of house tune that even metal fans would dig. Blaze's 2002 "Shine" features with that unmistakable Shelter mix, high and mighty thanks to deep horns and meandering piano keys, leaving Carlton's 1996 bomb "Can't Be Without" to the insanely capable hands of Chez Damier and Ron Trent; their Prescription mix will please even the most proud of diggers who own the original pressing. Recommended and timeless slices of house magic.

Review: Ever reliable Canadian producer Fred Everything makes his first appearance of 2017 with a selection of choice remixes of house classics for the Lazy Days label. On the A-side he's taking to Crazy P's "Like A Fool" a vocal and dub version and laying down a slick, bubbling groover that fits perfectly with the original's warm, disco-infused elements. On the flip, he takes on Roach Motel's "The Night" and makes it into a shimmering nocturnal cut peppered with impeccable synth lines and a sleazy vocal turn. By way of variety the final track sees Fred create a laid back Balearic, auto-tuned version of Franky Selector's "Wind Swept Dune".

Lily Ann was a quintessential one hit wonder of Italo disco perfection that surfaced in 1984, and "Going Crazy" captures the mood of early 80s dance music perfectly. Following on from the excellent Healing Force Project 12", the latest missive on the label comes from Galdoors co-founder Junes, who presents some of his strange and slippery techno variations for adventurous spinners who crave subtleties in their jams. "Of No Memory" has a wonderfully hypnotic quality to it, while "Pacing" heads down the minimal route to deadly effect. "Body Shirk" finishes the EP off with a head-turning set of drums and some tripped out synths.

Now he continues his Stateside swing for Detroit/Houston based Kolour LTD for the sixth edition of their limited 10" series. Review: Despite the Japanese artist name and branding, this mysterious 12" appears to be another missive from Paris' prolific Yoyaku studio, record store and booking agency. Musically, it certainly fits with their output to date. A-side "Hinode" sets the tone, with trippy electronics, sonic effects and - most surprisingly - warm deep house keys riding an on-point, funk-fuelled tech-house groove. On the flip, the unknown producer heads for more rugged, acid-flecked territory via the fluttering electronics, driving beats and woozy chords of "Hiru Hakiri", before charging into bouncier, ravier territory with the rubbery, riff-fuelled antics of closer "Nichibotsu".
