Review: Having already dazzled with her initial appearances on ESP Institute and Born Free, Japanese artist Moko Shibata continues to flourish as a producer with this utterly essential EP on Cocktail D'Amore. As with her previous releases, the mood is one of flamboyance and inventive melodies throughout, not least on the mutant disco celebration of "Heart". There is still some tougher fare to enjoy as well, with "Hole" proving to be particularly grubby, but overall there is a distinct sense that Shibata was reaching for a more disco influenced sound on this record, but it's far from your average slice of re-edited nonsense.

  2. Love You Down (4:58)
Review: Hugely influential, innovative and talented Leroy Hutson was so prolific throughout the 70s and 80s he could let cuts as crisp as this remain unreleased. It's almost criminal. Luckily Saph have been on the case and cracked it with this new series. Now on the second part, here's we're taken deep into dance with two straight up rare groove gems; "Skin To Skin" is a sweet-synth soul jam that shimmers with Miami's freestyle melting pot of the time. "Love You Down", meanwhile, slips and slides with bass so lewd it should come with a warning.

Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

Review: Highly respected Frenchman Alexandre Gouyette makes his debut on Berlin institution Cabinet Records with two perfectly contrasting grooves: "Soothing" naturally lives up to its name with soft focus dubby synth ripples and a classic drum arrangement while "Visions" rolls and punches like a Kenny Dope beats track. Broken, spacious, dubbed-out and physical, Brawther's reputation for rough finesse is so strong you can properly feel it.

Review: Subb An is the next in line for the Blind Box Series, bringing some of his most outwardly stripped down styles to date to the label. "Push" still packs a serious punch, but it's peppered with all kinds of head-twisting details to keep the all-day-all-night party crowd shuffling along to their hearts content. Dana Ruh does a killer job of remixing the track, turning it into a blissful groover that pivots around a woozy pad tone in its quest for deep house perfection. "Indulge" sports a little more of that Subb An punch, which then gets chiseled back into the curious tones of the Blind Box Remix.

Review: Galcher Lustwerk and Alvin Aronson turned many a head with the elegant sophistication of their collaborative album Scenes (2012-2015), which landed on Lustwerk's own label last year. Now the duo are back with more goodies from their Studio OST project, and once again the fusion between gossamer threads of melody and delicately crafted machine rhythms is evident throughout this 12". "Eventide" comes as a full blown track and a sumptuous beatless version, while "Ascension" has a dubby original and useful drums-only cut, making this record both functional and an absolute delight to listen to.

Review: Parallel Dimensions was first released in 2000. Since then, this seminal LP has been reissued on numerous occasions, and it's easy to understand why. Much like the work of his Detroit compatriot, Moodymann, Parrish's early work helped to define the sound that we now refer to as 'Detroit house'. Through an intricate, soulful blend of the Motor City's infamous Motown funk sounds, Parallel Dimensions has been one of the albums to showcase a particular style of sampling, one which focusses on rhythmic concoctions and a palpable sense of the city's struggles. Don't get us wrong, this LP is very much playable on the dancefloor, but it can't possibly be reduced to being categorised as a 'dance' piece. Hip-hop, soul, funk and disco are important parts of the formula, and the house and techno nuances that do emanate from the tunes are strictly a filter for Parrish's more jazzy, musical tendencies. It's an album to get lost in, to enjoy in different scenarios, and one in which you'll find something new every time you approach it. Unmissable.

Review: When Kerri Chandler wrote the tracks that make up the Panic E.P way back in 1992, he was little more than an up-and-coming producer from East Orange, New Jersey. Much has changed in the quarter of a century since, but Panic remains one of the now legendary house producer's finest 12" singles. Check, for example, the snaking sax samples, thumping kick-drums and fluttering vocal samples of late night classic "Get Up", the bouncy New Jersey drums and undulating synth-bass of "Something Wrong" and the basement-bothering, disco-sampling wooziness of "Love Is Over". These are raw, stripped back house tracks from the top drawer that don't seem to have aged since the moment they first appeared in stores.

Review: Rotterdam techno legend Benny Rodrigues aka ROD returns to Klockworks for more functional and powerful DJ tools guaranteed to rock any room with energy. Opening with the epic "Hor" guided by its absolutely explosive synth arpeggio (think Vitalic!) that builds up to a mighty crescendo, there's more dancefloor fodder on the A side courtesy of the darkly hypnotic drone techno of "Dubix" treading a similar path as label mate Etapp Kyle. On the flip, Rodrigues throws a nice curveball on the dark and aggressive electro-funk workout "Nitecollage" while "Pull" is sure to get some hands in the air with this adrenalised and euphoric number geared for some serious dancefloor drama.

Hi Times absolutely smash it on the A side with the buttery garage tones of "Journey Into Jazz", working up a mean piano hook and a hard swinging beat to devastating effect. Review: Melbournian DJ/producer Bell Towers is one of Public Possession's most prolific artists. This 12" is his seventh for the Munich-based stable in just under four years. It's something of a celebratory, peak-time affair, with A-side "All Aboard" offering a near perfect balance of flanged, ear-catching disco guitars, elastic live bass, DJ-friendly special effects, and a house sensibility. "Night Train To Nowhere" is a more druggy and trippy affair, with Bell Towers channeling the spirit of kraut greats Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream on a cut that sits somewhere between Italo-disco, kosmiche, and quirky, left-of-centre house. In other words, it's another rock solid EP.

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues apace with this new wedge of goodness from Logic Systems. The self-titled EP is the first we've heard of this particular producer, although it could just as easily be an alias for the boss himself. Whoever is behind the music, they should be thoroughly pleased with themselves. The quality and imagination that has been poured into these tracks is evident from the off - "Ariel" shimmers with its plush layers of synths and understated beat, while "S.C.A.M.P" gets some even more startling keys in the mix. The story is the same across the flipside, weaving a masterful tale that adds perfectly to the 89:Ghost canon.

From Portland's Losonofono, through to Soulfuric Trax and even Berlin techno merchants Kanzleramt and not to mention their own Solid Gold Records. The Minds Beneath Atlantis EP comes courtesy of Jerome Deradji's esteemed Still Music and starts off with the absolutely sexy deepness of "Shhh (Quiet)" (feat DOT) which will appeal to proper deep house nostalgists like us, likewise "U With Me" has that Detroit style that calls to mind other great producers like Big Strick or Andres. Now S.M.A.L.L and Paco are celebrating what they have achieved so far with a 12" that welcomes some highly respected characters to the label alongside familiar favourites. Janeret is on killer form with "First Light", using shimmering dub chords to course their way through a rock solid house beat in a simple but utterly effective style, before D'julz demonstrates his instinct for a killer hook with the organ-led fun and games of "Organic". Djebali keeps things tight and funky on "Aliahs", before the label bosses themselves round the record off with the irrepressible pump of "One & Only".

Review: The first EP on new edit imprint Nightshift Recordings comes from Javi Frias, an experienced scalpel fiend whose rearrangements have previously appeared on Street Edits, Midnight Riot and Giant Cuts. The four reworks here all sound like they've been extensively tried and tested on dancefloors, and tend towards the party-starting variety. The Madrid-based producer wisely keeps things varied, pairing the sweet and groovy "Make It Happen" with the boogie-era gospel disco of "Power" on the A-side. On the reverse, you'll find the sweaty, tooled-up, peak-time disco-house pump of "Gonna Feel So Good" and the punchy, horn-heavy disco-funk swagger of "Hard Edge & Paint".

Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Review: Before submerging himself in the world of electronic-acoustic fusion in 1977, Klauss Weiss had been best known as one of Germany's leading jazz drummers. 1978's Time Signals - here reissued on vinyl for the first time since - was not his first attempt to fuse early analogue synthesizers and home-made electronics with his own jazz-leaning drumming, but it probably remains his most successful exploration of this style. It's an album that successfully distils many influences - ambient, krautrock, Tangerine Dream, space rock, the Radiophonic Workshop, and so on - into a wealth of short, library music style tracks that impress with their imaginative approach to musical fusion. Throw in some killer drumming from Weiss - including some turntablist-friendly breaks - and you have an odd but thoroughly entertaining album.

Review: From Another Mind, founded in 2014, presents its fourth and most capacious release to date. Having started off initially as a South-German Party series, this release sees commanders-in-chief SHDW & Obscure Shape invite back previous guests from the clubnight, just this time using their talents as remixers to breathe new life into the first three much praised From Another Mind records. The likes of Rodhad, Tale Of Us & Mind Against, Dax J, Konstantin Sibold and Shlomo all feature with contributions staying true to the Label's sound forged initially by its founders, and whether going down an epic or a more banging path, all versions pay respect to that special hypnotism which has found so many supporters. Veteran Producer James Ruskin masterfully condenses "Nachtblende" down to a loop while Ryan James Ford brings a touch of IDM-ish Bleep Techno to "Augen Der Nacht". Ed Davenport explores his Inland project further, contributing a stepping techno journey which is only matched by Rodhad's version in its sheer vastness. The release is split in two version EPs, namely FAM004.1 & FAM004.2. Both artworks function by themselves however its full glory shines when held next to each other as the paintings complement each other.

Review: The development of Aussie Tornado Wallace from a promising deep house producer to a masterful maker of Balearic beats has been a joy to behold. Since first hooking up with Beats In Space and the similarly inclined ESP Institute last year, he's begun to develop a trademark sound that's warm, humid and musically rich. He's still capable of laying down chunky dancefloor rhythms, though, as the hypnotic new age house bumper "Soft Light" - the flipside of this second outing for Lovefingers' acclaimed imprint - so deftly proves. Really, though, it's when he gets more adventurous - such as on the wonderfully evocative Jonny Nash collaboration "Time of Nectar" and decidedly tropical lead cut "Circadia" - that he really comes into his own. Highly recommended.

A few years on and Huddersfield's premier house label are revisiting the modern classic with a raft of top shelf remixers on hand. Review: There are few surprises on Luke Hess's latest vinyl outing on Echochord's colour series, just a trio of fluttering, tried-and-tested techno workouts. Opener "Emerald" boasts a typically trippy and hypnotic groove, but also some heart-aching chord progressions and suitably melancholic melody lines. The late night hypnotism is also present on the slightly more boisterous "Lumen", in which the producer fires darting synthesizer lines and cyclical melody loops at a locked-in groove. In a possible bid to impress those who like their techno funkier and more forthright, he reaches for the foreboding acid lines and pounding kick-drums on cymbal-heavy closer "Myriads".

Review: Naples duo Whodamanny and Milord are anything but normal. Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Throw in unabashed bumpers like the acid tweaked "Momentum" and you've got the perfect soundtrack to an entire party from warm-up to sesh, club to beach.

Review: Shelter began his production career re-editing quirky cuts of a Balearic persuasion, before dropping a fine collection of original tracks on Uber last autumn. That set of woozy, horizontal gems clearly impressed International Feel boss Mark Barrott, as he's decided to release the French producer's debut album. Zon Zon Zon is arguably a little more varied than some may expect, with Shelter combining his usual new age inspired melodies and tropical flavours with nods to rubbery, post-disco pop, dub, woozy ambient and the kind of fluid, sun-baked electronica that defies easy categorization. However you describe it, Zon Zon Zon is mightily impressive, delivering a near perfect blend of electronic and acoustric instrumentation.

Review: Having notched up releases on the likes of Raum...musik and Apollonia, Makcim & Levi make the move to Lazare Hoche to deliver another shedload of hard-grooving house bombs for the deepest part of the night. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. "Sandwiches" meanwhile is a quirky, bugging jam that wriggles under the skin in the most subtle of ways before "Sowhaa" brings a much more hypnotic, pad-laden blend to the table for a soft landing from this feisty 12" of forward-thinking 4/4.

Review: After many years as a digital label, Ukranian label Manuscript makes the leap to vinyl with a choice selection of tracks enjoying the reissue treatment. Herbert's "Never Give Up" originally landed in 1997 as one of the peak moments in his purest phase of deep house production, and sounds just as fresh on this new pressing. Meanwhile forgotten jazz house jam "Sometimes I'm Blue" by Nick Holder gets a fresh airing, and deservedly so. Label boss Vincent Inc rounds the record off with his remix of Pluto's "Show Me Your Love", making a richly textured, shimmering deep house jam loaded with seductive tension.

Review: Roman in Brooklyn, Danilo Braca continues to pay homage to his new home with the second instalment of his edit series. Tapping deep into the city's tradition, each cut is as authentic and deeply dug as NYC's culture commands. Across the four tracks we're taken through the layers of Braca's make-up (and, most likely, DJ sets): the energetic disco funk of "Excuse Me Sir", the almost Nuyorican twangs of the jazzier "Illas", the hazy disco swoons of "Got Time For Love" and the beautifully psychedelic finale; the pipe-smoking, guitar-twanging cosmic trip that is "Big Foot". Big cuts.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With two massive reissues from Suns of Arqa and Jaki Whitren under their belts, the fledging label Emotional Rescue have come up with the goods once again, with this remastered reissue of incredibly rare 70s psyche-funk from Bob Chance. Two versions are included: the original 7" version, driven along by a razor-sharp guitar riff and sweetly lamenting lyrics, topped off with weird cosmic synths and galloping rhythm. However, the real gem is the edit entitled "Wild It's Broken" which sharpens the focus of the guitar and adds some serious kick to the drums to create a beefy counterpart to the new age original.

Review: While they may have mined many of their classic early releases, it's taken until now for the resurgent Vibraphone crew to return to their very first offering form way back in 1992. 49th Floor was a pseudonym of Stefano Curti, one of the mainstays of the label, and Night Passage was the classic record that started it all off. The whole EP has been given the remastering treatment and sounds fresher than ever, with "Fast City" in particular shining bright with its urgent swing, luscious bassline and sprightly keys. This is house music in its purest form, often imitated but never replicated.

Review: For all his skills as a DJ - and, let's face it, he pretty much created the Afro-cosmic DJ style all on his own - Daniele Baldelli's productions have not always hit the mark. It's heartening to report, then, that this collaboration with Dario Piana for Leng Records is arguably the best thing he's produced to date. "Infinity Machine", where wild, effects-laden Clavinet lines, jammed-out electric piano chords and meandering synthesizer solos ride a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline, sets the tone magnificently, before the Italian duo jogs towards dub disco territory on the percussion rich "If You Drive". Badlelli's love of spacey synths, crunchy guitars and tactile synth bass comes to the fore on closer "Air Vibes", which also boasts a wonderfully tactile breakdown.

Review: Sydney production unit Hugo Gruzman and James Lyell have served their time as Flight Facilities, serving up numerous feel good singles and remixes for the Hype Machine since they first emerged back in 2010 on Bang Gang. Now fully fledged members of the Future Classic cause, Gruzman and Lyell get the opportunity to explore the Flight Facilities sound more extensively with their debut album Down To Earth. It's a worthy title too, as there's a lack of pretence to these fourteen tracks, with the instrumental work from Flight Facilities geared to giving the contributing vocalists the spotlight. The Stee Downes featuring "Hold Me Down" and Owl Eyes collab "Heart Attack" are both highlights and offer some hint at the sonic diversity covered within.

Review: Recent reviews of Spirit, Depeche Mode's first studio set for four years, have remarked at how angry and frustrated the band seems to be throughout. Messers Gore, Gahan and Fletcher are not particularly happy with the way the world is right now, and have laid down an album of rare intensity, seemingly fuelled by a growing desperation at political events on both sides of the Atlantic. Producer James Ford undoubtedly played a role in defining the sound of Sprit, but the combination of raucous, punk style guitars, thrusting electronics and big choruses is what we've come to expect from Depeche Mode.

Review: After a series of successful grooves on Bitter Moon, Matteo Pepe's Uabos makes himself known on the perennial Bordello A Parigi. It's the perfect fit: Pepe's uplifting analogue soul thrusts with a sense of positivity and musicality that tips a respectful hat to the legacy of Italo. The ageless consistency runs throughout smoothly as we're flung from the barbed flickers of acid on "Mystic Force" to the sci-fi imagery and emotion of "City Woods". Elsewhere "Karmic Souls" flexes back to 1990 with its rolling broken drums while "Copacabana" will have everyone reliving the 80s - even if they weren't even born that decade.

Review: Not just a beautiful compliment to pay someone special, but a hugely influential record that inspired Floating Points' now legendary Plastic People parties, too... A super obscure and expensive one at that. Now re-issued on Floating Points' own Melodies imprint - across three 45s - the Detroit band get full exposure with the deliciously funky main track enjoying two versions before dipping into the softer, more pastoral charms of "I Feel Like Dancing" and the string-led swoon festival, "Theme For Someone Special". We close on two contrasting grooves; an earthy ballad ("Trust Me") and a Whitfield & Strong style funk instrumental ("Dance Awhile"). Cheers Sam!

Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has reinvented herself in recent years, swapping the contemporary, radio-friendly '90s R&B of her youth for a sound heavily influenced by vintage, 1960s and '70s soul and funk. It's a blend that was explored on last year's superb Queen Alone full-length. The two tracks showcased on this 7" were both featured on that album. "Underneath My Feet" is particularly potent, with Wray offering a rasping, impassioned vocal that seems to soar above the triple-time backing track. "Guilty", with its sweet guitars, harmony backing vocals and rock solid funk breakbeat, sounds a little like some of Sharon Jones' more poignant moments.

Review: Wolf Music alumnus Medlar teams up with multi instrumentalist Ishmael here for the inaugural release of West Friends which is brought to you by Peckham record store Rye Wax as their new sublabel. "Bell, Everywhere 1" is deep house that delves into the truly exotic. There's more funky and syncopated rhythms complimented by lush bell tones on "Bell, Everywhere 2" while on the flip, we've go "B2 Or Not B2", a cute drum track featuring an odd selection of hits that somehow work together supported by pawn shop synth bleeps.

Review: Any new release from husband-and-wife duo Peaking Lights is worth checking, and this surprise single on their Two Flowers imprint - their first for two years - is no exception. While their psychedelically inclined leftfield pop is always colourful, it's rarely quite as bouncy and confident as "Little Flower", where Chloe Sevigny talks seductively over undulating synthesizer melodies, kaleidoscopic electronics and an almost military style rhythm track. Arguably even better is B-side "Conga Blue" (available in both vocal and instrumental interpretations), which moulds their usual hallucinatory pop with dub disco and synth-wave flourishes. It's one of those tracks that just gets better with each successive listen.
