Review: Having first pricked our consciousness via a deep, tropical house cut on Moonrise Hill Material's first Love Me Some Friends 12" earlier in the year, Tochigi Canopy delivers his debut album. As first releases go, Collecting Things is something of a doozy: a deliciously dusty, analogue-rich collection of straight-to-tape workouts smothered in stretched-out chords, sticky field recordings and curious, vari-speed effects. Musically, it sees him saunter between soft focus ambient cuts, twinkling downtempo grooves, near horizontal deep house shufflers, and the kind of saucer-eyed soundscapes that sound like they should be sound-tracking blissful summer sunrises. In other words, it's a beauty.

Review: P-Balans continues to shed light on the more unusual underbelly of the Romanian scene, taking a few cues from the dominant minimal scene but adding plenty of analogue weirdness into the mix to provide a genuine alternative for those who like a little more spice in their sauce. On this release Khidja and Delusion Men team up for some off-kilter trips into subversive danceability, starting with the subtle, wavey acid of "Strayed" before cartwheeling into the spooky delights of "Recurrent Weakness". The ghoulish theme gets ramped up to 11 on "Ghost Caravan", where a deathly slow beat carries all kinds of undead synth work, and then Borusiade takes "Recurrent Weakness" to task with a pinging, plunging remix for the end of days.

Review: Famously, East of Underground's 1971 debut album - a brilliant set of originals and covers that many soul fans think is an overlooked gem - was pressed up and distributed to soldiers during the Vietnam War by the U.S Army. Here, one of the highlights of that set, the band's cover of Norman Whitfield's "Smiling Faces Sometimes", gets a deserved 7" reissue. It's a wonderful version, all told, with the band's brilliant musicality and emotion-rich vocals shining through (think Curtis Mayfield crossed with the Meters, and you're close). On the flip you'll find another cut from that hard-to-find debut album, "I Love You", a typically sweet and dewy-eyed ballad rippling with vocal harmonies.

Review: According to the sales notes accompanying this EP, little-known newcomer Volruptus "hails from outer space via Reykjavik". Given that the record is appearing on Bjarki and Johnny Chrome Silver's BBBBBB label, we're guessing that one of those two may be the otherworldly producer in question. Musically, there's much to admire throughout, from the Kraftwerkian vocoder vocals, booming electro beats and psychedelic acid lines of "Alien Transmissions", to the sweaty, up-all-night, braindance-meets-early-hardcore insanity of "Gett Vffreakeye". Elsewhere, "Tesseract" is an on-point exercise in Drexciyan electro with subtle nods towards vintage Orbital, and "Jargon" is an electro-inspired techno roller.

  4. Umwelt - "Hooverrun" (5:24)
Review: According to Rave or Die's press team, this compilation style ten-inch double-pack contains only "bangers and DJ tools for connoisseurs". That's actually a rather apt description of the '90s rave influenced fare on offer. The Mover kicks things off with a 2017 re-master of nails 2009 production "Invisible Space" - think aggressive Belgian techno noises, bombastic beats and spacey bleeps - before Minimum Syndicat blurs the boundaries between electro, techno and industrial on the foreboding "Battle Dress". Over on ten-inch number two, you'll find The Hacker's similarly minded (and similarly fuzzy) "Wave of Darknes", as well as label boss Umwelt's TB-303 heavy tribute to R&S Records' back catalogue, the saucer-eyed, tops-off stomp of "Hooverrun".

Review: Thule's dark doppelganger AE Recordings was revived last year with the excellent Freyja EP by NonniMal, and now the saga continues with this devastatingly on-point release from Cold. Much like the vibe on Thule, the music on Thule continues to channel the mood of the icy tundra into refined, modern club tracks, but there's definitely a more sinister intent at work in these tracks from Cold. "Aerials" is a nightmarish chugger loaded with eerie sonics, while "Phased Out" lays down some fine dubby processing over a bed of chilly chord pulses. "Exiles" is a standout track thanks to its crafty groove, coming on a little more housey than its counterparts but still heavier than the average Thule jam.

Review: The third release on the emergent Dreamtime label finds Bobby Bricks and Miskotom sharing precious wax space with their own takes on laid back Balearic house. Bricks is up first, laying down a laid back house chugger propelled by fluttering synth lines that have spent time soaking up plenty of vitamin D. "Amazon Blue" does away with the drums for much of the tune, letting the new age synth tones do all the work before a mellow set of percussion comes loping in. Miskotom has a more nocturnal feel at work on "Star Master", but it's no less plush in its execution, while "Ad Lucem" ramps up fretless bass licks and plastic flute tones for another blissful excursion onto the astral plane.

Review: Mushi 45 is a new, limited-edition 7" series aimed at those DJs who wish that their favourite obscure funk and soul tracks came with longer drum breaks. On the A-side you'll find a "Break Edit" of Ricky Williams' sought-after 1971 cut "Discotheque Soul (Part II)". In keeping with the vibe of the original, the tasty re-edit is a whirlwind trip through Hammond-laden party funk territory - all wild instrument solos and extended percussion workouts. On the flip, the un-credited editor takes his or her scalpel to Les Baxter's "Hogin Machine", a harmonica-heavy rhythm and blues slammer that first appeared on the artist's 1969 soundtrack to the largely forgotten film Hell's Belles. Since Baxter's original version is little over 90 seconds long, this extended, break-driven re-edit is arguably much needed.

Review: Afrobeat alert right here, for even the most cynical of Fela believers - no lie! Trombonist Toli Nameless leads this magnificent EP, out through the fledgling Kooyman Records, in what is actually a sort of reissue... or rather an unearthing of some pretty special material that was recorded in the NYC area around about 2003. In what was a series of infamous live performances back then, these recordings has gained fame in the underground name and so this must be a rather special event for anyone whose been longing for their mystical charm until now. "See Line" is the most energetic of the trio, all guns blazing on the percussion front and vocal voodoo, while "Talk Da Shit" provides your more typical Afro funk, except that its way sexier thanks to Toli's brass vibes. The instrumental dub to "Def Ears", however, is the more special of the three and the one to bring out that lovely, heartical bounce that we all yearn for. A magnificent EP. Highly recommended!

Review: Albeit subtly, SFV acid aka Zane Reynolds has been marketing his strain of acid house and techno for just about ten years now and, while he may not always be one of the ones to get name-dropped, the man can sure conjure up some fine-ass dance beats. In fact, it's no surprise that he's collaborated with the likes of Legowelt, another untouched master of the category. Petty Clubber marks Third Try's third release to date; "125 BPM At Night", manifested across three different versions, make for the perfect opening tunes on this EP, and each offer a different shade of of 303-laden fun to the listener, dancer or DJ. The B-side opens with the glitchy, minimalistic bumps of "Petty Clubber" itself, which is remixed by Secret Circuit, SFV and Suzanne Kraft into a wilder, bouncier party groove. "Zen Fits" brings the festivities to a close with a beautifully broken IDM tool that recalls AFX at his warmest. What a lovely entry into this week's picks!

Review: The prolific Finnish production powerhouse Trevor Deep Jr is back, this time landing on We Play The Music We Love with an urgent collection of machine-made techno delights for all times of the night. Lapien's remix of "Lights Go Out" is the perfect starting point for this EP, riding on thrumming acid bass and haunting pads with a rock solid beat thundering away in the middle. "#dub4 (Tape Mix)" meanwhile ploughs a much deeper furrow into, as you might well have guessed, dub techno, but that's just a foil for the powerful thrust of the original version of "Lights Go Out" which spreads itself across the whole B-side.

Review: New York meets Brighton as both label and artist step out on wax for the first time. This is a new, exciting realm for Homage, but they surely know they're onto a winner with the feel good disco edit tones of Tech Support. There are classics embedded into these fine jams, with "Feel It" coming on particularly summery in its laid back disco funk stylings. "Inside Out" is slightly more looped up, but no less uplifting, while "Clarity" heads into a more woozy, filtered groove that feels inspired by the likes of Theo Parrish's Ugly Edits. By way of contrast "Sugar" is a much more electronic affair that kicks with purpose while simultaneously reaching for the stars.

Fizzing with a funky, carefree melting pot nature, here he consolidates his limited 12s with fresh cuts that exploring the most cosmic, funky and euphoric corners of grime beats. The whole album is a trip that jets you round places you didn't know existed; the tropical star-gazing romanticism of "Me X You", the raw funky purple power of "E-Motion", the sensual G-business of "Lost Memories", the list of Iron Soul's musical achievements and vision grows by the 16. "Zulu Blues" (with Mystik) builds up from the roots as a heavy dub groove with precision space and weight while "True King" takes us much deeper into the chamber with a soft kick and heavier emphasis on the atmospheres. We conclude on the slippery technoid funk of "Conduit" that could easily take up residence in Detroit. Stunning.

He is said to have based the material on this album from the live set he has been presenting in recent years and inaugurates his new Asking For Trouble imprint. Starting off with "Steve Chop" a straight up breaks number (a sound that he helped pioneer alongside the likes of J. Review: Nomadico is Dan Caballero aka the Underground Resistance affiliated DJ Dex. His new Gentefication EP is inspired by the movement of the same name in East Los Angeles that's striving to maintain the local street culture without selling out to real estate developers and hipsters. More power to 'em we say! The title track on the A side is emotive hi-tech soul: just the way we like it and sounding like his old days with Los Hermanos or Ican. The gritty B side cut "Graff Walk" was probably our favourite of the bunch. With its buzzy sub bass snarl and rusty spitfire rhythm patterns going for some proper 'street techno' style. This really is a soundtrack for 'young barrio coders, digital artists and community organizers.' as Yaxteq claim. And they'll certainly continue to honour high-tech urban innovation that goes against all expectations.

They kick off with this collaborative opener, with Alan Castro's bleeping house experiment to open the festivities, followed rather smartly by Neik and the supremely glitchy "Hippie Futurista". On the flip, Yanee's "Morph" is an itchy groove filled with all sorts of percussive flair, whereas "North Market At 3 AM" sees Pedro D'Alessandro and Maxi Fried construct a beautifully funky little house number with an elegant swing.

Since the genre's golden years, back in the late noughties, only a few peeps like Villalobos have managed to construct sparse micro house that actually sounds good, but this material from Olo has made us reconsider our opinions. These three sleek and ultra effective tools are deconstructed just enough to so as to still feel groovy and neatly dubbed-out. Bass lines aren't compromised in favour of superfluous FX frivolties and there is pleanty of movement in here for all kinds of dance tunes to be mixed in alongside them. More Olo, please.

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Kettle America (7:18)
  2. I Knead You (5:47)
  3. Without Rob (5:46)
Review: Razor 'N' Tape's two previous servings of Dimitri From Brooklyn edits (and, yes, they're the work of legendary DJ/producer Dimitri From Paris) were both must-haves, so hopes are naturally high for this third volume. Predictably, the disco-loving Frenchman is on fine form once more, laying down a trio of interpretations that breathe new life into classic jams. While the A-side "Kettle America" (say it phonetically) is something of a cheeky treat - impressively chopping between hard-wired guitar riffs and the original track's bustling disco groove - it's "I Knead You", an end-of-night, lights-up version of a Sylvester cut that smartly emphasizes the song's gospel origins, that really sparkles. "Without Rob", a harmonica-heavy rearrangement of a well-known favourite, completes another essential package.

Replacement stylus for M44G cartridge, ideal for techno/house DJs
Notes: The Shure N44G/N44GQ stylus is the replacment stylus for the Shure M44G cartridge. Shure are slowly but surely building up a dj customer base. These DJs will not use anything but shure cartridges and styli. The look is oldskool and the performance is groundbreaking, if you have not yet checked out shure products then now may well be the time. This particular stylus is rich, warm, tight, with high skip resistance and is decribed as being ideal for house/techno DJs.

Review: Salon Des Amateurs' Bufiman makes his Dekmantel debut with two left-of-centre, broken beat mind-melters. "Peace Moves" is a lo-fi, almost sludgy dive into a synth swamp where flurries of cosmic synth licks swoon and tease above your heard. "Graffiti Moves" takes an even trippier twist over a similarly low-and-slow drum arrangement but with added sparkling percussion. Throw in two cutlass-sharp versions of and you've got yourself a watertight declaration of peace. Absurdly on-point as always from Dekmantel.

Deep House
  1. Jungelknugen (Four Tet remix) (7:49)
  2. Jungelknugen (Prins Thomas remix) (8:59)
Review: Todd Terje has yet to release the original version of "Jungelknugen", but he's decided to release these remixes anyway. It makes sense: as you'd expect, both are top notch. Four Tet handles the A-side, delivering a version rich in Italian dream house style pianos, swirling synthesizer chords, jazzy musical touches, analogue bass and the kind of live-and-loose beats that the veteran prodicer has become famous for. It even boasts a rush-inducing breakdown for those 6AM "Scandolearic" moments. On the flip, Terje's old pal Prins Thomas takes the track in a different direction, fusing Terje's piano motifs with bleep style sub-bass, psychedelic electronics, and some swinging disco beats of his own.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Continuing to do great service to reissue culture, Emotional Rescue this time look to the nigh-on insurmountable back catalogue of late Manchester-based producer Muslimgauze, whose influence can be tangibly heard in the likes of Shackleton. Suns Of Arqa were equally enamoured with fusing the haunting qualities of Middle Eastern music with other styles, in their own case dub, and so their selection to remix a whole host of Muslimgauze tracks made perfect sense. Now the engrossing and otherworldly jaunt through distant lands enjoys a plush new vinyl release on which to truly enjoy the mixture of soothing and savage sounds.

Deep House
  1. Axis Of Love (8:38)
  2. 8th Ray (5:52)
Review: Emotional Rescue continue their exploration of the cult Miami label Dancefloor Records with this slice of sensual deep house heaven from the obscure Eighth Ray. Originally released in 1991, this is tripped out dance music of the highest order that, as the press release rightly says, aligns with the honey-coated grooves that were emanating from Italy at the time. With its effortless joie de vivre and warm, clear production, "Axis Of Love" is a perfect warm up or melt out jam. "8th Ray" is a more bleepy affair that wouldn't sound out of place rubbing up against some of the early Warp Records jams.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: From the label: "This EP is a dedication to the Amsterdam based Alkebulan Project. Philou and Villy are both members of this project, the project brings artists from Africa & African Diaspora together. The Alkebulan Project is on a mission to change the perception of Africa an it's citizens. Nigerian artist Villy and his group "Villy & The Xtreme Volumes" are on a mission to educate Africans with their message calling for a revolution in Africa, politically and socially in all aspects. Philou has a combination of Congolese, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean heritage and it is in these roots that he has built his sound. His passion for the continent of his ancestors is fervent and his projects are challenging commonly held preconceptions about Africa. His goal is to challenge negative stereotypes, by making African cultures more approachable through music. Much love for Rudy Asibey for founding The Alkebulan Project and bringing the artists together and many thanks to Marcel Vogel for giving us the opportunity to tell our story through."
