Review: Black Riot Records: the tougher brother of Midnight Riot Records is a larger than life house label with an array of artists and producers from around the globe. Whether it be deep, electronic, jacking or jazzy: you've come to the right party. Irresistible business which has brought you the likes of Eli Escobar, Amp Fiddler and Thatmanmonkz. Buckley kicks off the A side here with the sexy vocal house jam "Rendition". Not forgetting Mickey Oliver's "Just A Tease" featuring Russoul on the B side which dives deeper on this smooth late night journey with yet more powerful vocals, plus Hypnotic Lovers next up on remix duty. Solid release!

Review: France's Favorite label dabbles in all things funky and disco-flavoured, and this time they've decided to go with a Brazilian edge on their latest 12". Painel De Controle begins with a Waxist mix of "Relax", a chilled-out boogie monster with sultry vocals, while "Ripa Na Xulipa" by Rabo De Saia is more uplifting and heavy on the disco strings. Finally, Nick The Record rewires "Labirinto" by Famks into a subtly electro-fied boogie nugget. Nice!

Review: Pascal Rioux's Favorite Recordings hasn't put out a dud record since its inception back in 2006 and, along with introducing us to artists like Onra, the imprint is surely one of the most complete sources of disco and nu-disco available on the market. Their most recent series, AOR Global Sounds, have all the makings of future classics, and this is especially true given the fact that all of its tunes have been lost in the depths of time and greedy Discogs sellers. The third chapter in the series features tunes from between 1976 and 1985, carefully curated by Charles Maurice with the aim of showcasing various disco artists from around the world that have been influenced by the inimitable 'Westcoast' boogie sound. Make no mistake, these tunes are all rare-as-hens-teeth, and you're unlikely to find them pressed up on wax anywhere else. Although each tune features a different artist, from Stratus through to Funky Team or even Brazil's Willy Santana, this is very much an LA kinda thang. An essential comp for anyone serious about their boogie joints...

Review: Recent reviews of Spirit, Depeche Mode's first studio set for four years, have remarked at how angry and frustrated the band seems to be throughout. Messers Gore, Gahan and Fletcher are not particularly happy with the way the world is right now, and have laid down an album of rare intensity, seemingly fuelled by a growing desperation at political events on both sides of the Atlantic. Producer James Ford undoubtedly played a role in defining the sound of Sprit, but the combination of raucous, punk style guitars, thrusting electronics and big choruses is what we've come to expect from Depeche Mode.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his Yussef Kamaal project with Yussef Dayes, Henry Wu returns to Eglo Records for the first time since 2015. While it's jazzy broken beat opener "Deep In The Mudd" - co-produced by Hardhouse Banton - that's naturally getting most attention, there's plenty to get excited about elsewhere on the EP. Check, for example, the hissing jazz of "Boards & Skins", Kaidi Tatham's deep, sparkling and effortlessly soulful re-make of "Just Negotiate", and the ultra-deep, Rhodes-laden bliss of "Reflections", a beat-less treat. Also worth checking is the EP's other Hardhouse Banton hook-up, "Century", which charges off on a high-tempo, mutant P-funk tip.

  3. Swing Star (part 1) (4:03)
  4. Swing Star (part 2) (7:01)
Review: Given that Todd Terje's first original material in some five years resulted in one of last year's highlights with the Running Back released Ragysh, it's natural he would want to leave some space before following up. The first of a series of EPs crafted from using one bit of vintage gear in particular, It's The Arps sees Terje dabble with the intricacies of the Arp 2600 analogue synthesizer as well as pay homage to his favourite Monty Python sketch. This is just as nerdy as you'd expect from a man who recently launched a website with the specific intention of exploring the obsessive studio nature of his contemporaries. The aforementioned "Inspector Norse" is an obvious highlight here, slowly unfurling gorgeous layers of playful synthesis that grapple the simplistic drums with flirtatious delight. Naturally for someone who spends most weekends of the year in a nightclub, Terje demonstrates a real prowess for building up the track, teasing your senses once before unleashing the mid point monstrous moment. It makes for another signature track from Terje which is likely to engender a rapturous reception for many months to come. Alongside it, "Myggsommer" provides a brief, twee interlude into oddball sci fi soundscapes which again prove to highlight the Arp 2600's capacity for inventive and idiosyncratic sounds. From here Terje unveils a two part skywards saunter through "Swing Star" showcasing a more dextrous manipulation of the Arp 2600's melodies across the markedly more rhythmic upbeat first part and expansive luxurious cosmic subsequent endeavour. Whilst "Inspector Norse" is guaranteed to be the one track from this release you will hear in the international discotheques, the remainder of It's The Arps serves as a excellent reminder of Terje's ever growing talent as a producer.

Review: The Detroit badman always delivers the goods, but he'd recently focussed on his more house-centric style thanks to a series of sleek, soulful releases. This time, he's come out all guns blazing with this new four-part killer, led by the absolutely nutty groove that is "Sink Holes" - a proper slice of Omar S acid, delivered in fine style and with his inimitable rawness. "HELL ON EARTH" is a moodier, funkier house tip with a jazzy side, while the flipside's "Hit It Bubba (I Want My Dadda's Rekids!!!!)" is a fast, upbeat house bomb with a crazy little disco sample that floats amid the grainy bass drums. "Party Marty" is a no nonsense kind of lick, pouncing away with a steady, yet unmistakably Omar S-style percussion, and a heavy bass blow. This is one hell of a way to make an appearance this early in the year - highly recommended!!

  3. Basic Principle (4:53)
Review: ** Repress For The Hood Fans ** This much anticipated EP on his own M Plant label sees Detroit legend Robert Hood continue to develop to his Floorplan alias after the recent Living It Up single. The A-Side explores euphoric 90s house tropes in "We Magnify His Name", a peak time piano driven anthem which is as religious an experience to listen to as its name suggests, complete with uplifting gospel vocals. On the flip, Hood explores his darker techno tendencies over two tracks. "Baby Baby" relies more on a cut up vocal sample and a slightly wobbling Motor City leaning bassline and a Model 500 style funk swing to it, provided in no small part by a particularly great guitar lick, while tension and release is offered in spades by a well placed horn sample. "Basic Priciple" meanwhile is a druggier affair propelled by its murky sub bass and techno stabs, the only melody coming from a particularly sinister two note organ line.

Review: Fresh from an acclaimed outing on FACES, Giovanni Damico pops up on Marcel Vogel's inspired Lumberjacks In Hell label. The Italian producer is naturally in fine form here, with A-side "Tanzania" - a breezy, house-friendly rework of what sounds like a Tanzanian boogie cut - being one of the most addictive and life-affirming edits we've heard this month. You'll find more wiggling synthesizer lines on the deliciously dreamy and evocative deep house shuffler "I Need Me", while "Are You Somebody" is a successful exercise in subtly beefing up a low-slung disco-funk number. As if that wasn't enough to set the juices flowing, he completes a brilliant E.P with the jazz-fuelled deep house smokiness of "Humans After All".

Review: For their latest full-length exploration of the world of spiritual jazz - the label's seventh, in total - Jazzman has decided to focus on artists and performers whose Islamic faith influenced their work. Given that many jazz greats were early converts to the spiritually charged Ahmadiya school of Islam - Kenny Clarke, Art Blakey, Ahmad Jamal and Yusuf Lateef included - there's plenty of fine material for Jazzman to explore. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, with standouts including the Persian jazz-fusion of Emmanuel Abdul-Rahim's "Kalamari Suite", the haunting flutes and intoxicating bongo rhythms of Sabu and Sihab Shahib's "Nus", and The Lightmen's celebratory epic, "All Praises To Allah (Part 1 & 2)".

Once again, it's a rich warm brew underpinned with juicy synth bass runs and dense synth atmospheres as the Italian drives us deep into a sci-fi funk wonderland. Review: Second time around for Detroit deep house outfit The Kings of Late Night's 2005 Fly Away EP, which originally appeared on the West End Blue imprint. With Billy Love's sumptuous vocals to the fore, there's much to enjoy throughout - not least the organic, undulating, live deep house warmth of sublime opener "It's The Life". Theo Parrish's Sound Signature Remix of "Illumination" - ultra-deep, jazzy, spaced-out and hypnotic - remains one of the Detroit producer's greatest reworks. On the flip, beatdown pioneer Norm Talley takes on remix duties to deliver two contrasting versions of "Fly Away". There's the sparse, jazzy and intricately programmed West End Blue Mix, and the slightly smoother West End Lounge Mix, where Love's immaculate vocals take centre stage.

Review: Frankfurt innovator Rajko Muller returns as Isolee, working his magic this time for The Drifter's rather impressive Maeve imprint which in recent times has brought us fantastic work by Ed Davenport, Baikal and Ripperton. "Pisco" is a slow burning groove with phased marimbas that cause a hypnotic dream state, while "L5 Syndrome" dives deeper: this smooth and introverted trip is definitely suited to the early night as it is to the afterhours and reminds us of his earlier seminal works in the nineties, on labels like Playhouse. Finally, the title track is where Muller saves the best for last; this dubby, lo-slung groove is drenched in delayed and reverberated aesthetics.

Cat: 569512 Rel: 06 Jul 15

Texture eurorack synth module with 1-8 second recording buffer & 4 quality settings
Notes: Clouds is a granular audio processor - with a couple of twists.

Unlike granular sample players, Clouds is focused on the realtime granularization of incoming audio signals, and the acquisition of textures from them.

Classic controls such as grain position, size, and pitch are provided. Clouds can superimpose many grains simultaneously (at least 40, depending on the CPU used by its other features) and thus create thick textures. Control over texture density, independently of grain size, is thus provided. An external trigger input allows grains to be seeded in sync with LFOs or rhythmic generators.

To provide a richer variety of timbres, Clouds allows the shape of the grain's envelope to be morphed - from sharp rectangular edges to a smooth bell curve. In addition, a diffusion network can further dissolve the edges of grains into blurry textures.

Finally, to cover various applications of granular synthesis without the need for additional modules, Clouds' comes with four "blending" settings for mixing and re-routing its output signal: dry/wet balance, random panning amount, feedback amount, and reverberation amount. Voltage control over one of those four parameters is possible.

Clouds' delay memory ranges from 1s to 8s depending on audio quality settings.

Other surprises have been packed in Clouds, including alternative looping delay and pitch-shift/time-stretch modes... and a very strange spectral buffer freeze/glitch.

Review: For the second volume in the Tony Allen and Africa 70 Disco Afro Re-Edit series, Africaine 808 and Mexican Sound Institute have been given the tricky task of reworking some suitably epic classics. The 12-minute original version of "Afro-Disco Beat", long considered one of the greatest Afrobeat workouts of all time, proudly stretches out across the A-side, allowing listeners to revel in Allen's extended drum breaks and Africa 70's rousing, horn-heavy instrumentation. Africaine 808 give the track a deliciously spacey, Moog-heavy makeover, combining Allen's playing and Africa 70's horns with vintage drum machine hits and outer-space effects. A brilliant package is completed by Mexican Sound Institute's similarly spacey, intergalactic interpretation of 1979 cut "African Message".

No, its slap bang in the middle of spring, but we love that Kowton plays with our sense of time like that. The Bristol bass engineer has been absent for a little while, so "Pea Soup" feels like a breath of fresh air flowing onto our shelves, especially because it belongs to his very own, inimitable brand of pseudo techno with that noticeable layer of 90s jungle grit. The flip, a tune called "Iodine", is much more steeped in a contemporary Berlin flair, a subtle techno bullet with a dreamy, washy UK bleep artillery riding the crest of its drum beat, and it's yet more proof of the sort of high quality 4/4 that this man can deliver. Class.

Review: When it comes to serving up all-analogue box jams, few labels can compete with Jerome Hill's Super Rhythm Trax imprint. The latest hardware fiend to join Hill's retro-futurist revolution is debutant Pendle Watkins. Naturally, there's barely a duffer in sight. Watkins begins with the intergalactic, Motor City electronics and sweaty drum machine hits of "Deal With It", before sauntering into deeper territory via the Larry Heard-esque "Emerge". On the flip you'll find the raging acid heaviness of "Domination" - all psychedelic TB-303 lines, dystopian vocal samples and redlined percussion - and the fuzzy alien bliss of undulating jack-track "Yah Boobay". In other words, it's a fine collection of club-ready analogue workouts.

Review: For their get this: 900th release, house institution Strictly Rhythm serve up a whopper in the form of two heavyweights. One half of Masters At Work Kenny Dope and the inimitable Roland Clark rocking the mic on the NSFW "Talk Dirty". On the A side we have got the "Kenny Dope O Gutta mix" which is the deep and smooth version while on the flip there's a handy instrumental. Celebrating with a big bang indeed!

Review: It would be fair to say that Black Jazz Consortium man Fred P is a reliable source of atmospheric, immaculately produced deep house and techno. We can't think of a duff release to date. Certainly, this first 12" for Secretsundaze is full of playable treats. Opener "6AM" uses tribal-influenced drum rhythms, mutilated vocal samples and moody electronics to create a dark and hypnotic early morning mood, while "Herb" is a perfect fusion of trippy broken house rhythms, hazy minor key refrains and weighty dub bass. Arguably best of all, though, is "Mile High", a superbly emotional deep house epic full of crystalline chord progressions, sweeping synth-strings and immaculately programmed percussion.

Review: Is it you? Is it your neighbour? Is it your mum? Still no one knows who Dawn Wall is (or are) but we know we're cruising point blank towards an album. Here are four more reasons to look forward to it; "Twin Falls" rolls with the anonymous artists' signature piano lulls and a hazy vocal sample. Simple, soulful, bliss. "Mantis" hits a little harder with warm insistent key strikes, a groaning bassline and some interesting textures fluttering overhead while "Holding On" flexes a Gill Scott vocal and Think Break with guitar glistening perfection. Finally "Mariner" takes us out to choppier oceans where the seas and keys are notes of deep blue. The mystique continues...

Review: Naples duo Whodamanny and Milord are anything but normal. Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Throw in unabashed bumpers like the acid tweaked "Momentum" and you've got the perfect soundtrack to an entire party from warm-up to sesh, club to beach.

  1. DJ Seinfeld - "Airing Of Grievances" (4:25)
  2. M44K - "MYSTVIB" (edit) (5:34)
Review: The E-Beamz imprint is primarily known for two things: silly, tongue-in-cheek production aliases (think DJ Windows XP, DJ Boring and DJ Longdick, for starters) and seriously dusty, retro-futurist, lo-fi club tracks. This eight release naturally ticks both of those boxes. The A-side is helmed by DJ Seinfeld, whose "Airing of Grievances" offers a perfect fusion of jungle style sub-bass, snappy, house-tempo jazz breaks and fluttering, deep house motifs. It's woozy and picturesque, but also grimy and ludicrously bass-heavy. On the flipside, M44K serves up something rather more wavy and loved-up: a crunchy house re-make of a loved-up, head-in-the-clouds blue-eyed soul number that pits sensual elements from the original source material against bombastic, club-ready drum machine hits.

Review: Serial collaborator Guti returns to action for the first time in 2017. This time the Argentine producer is joined in the studio by Aussie audio explorer Morgan. "This Must Be The Future" is an attractive chunk of rolling, late night tech-house, albeit one whose power is partly derived from the crunchiness of their drum machine percussion hits and electronic motifs that reminded us of Swag records of old. Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier join forces to deliver a rolling, warehouse-friendly remix, before Guti goes solo on "Her House", where sweaty old school vocal samples ride heavy bass and jazzy drum machine percussion. British veteran Mark Broom delivers his own spin on that track, predictably turning it into a party-starting slab of late night, rave-inspired techno perfection.

Review: Earlier this year, Hammer broke loose of his long association with fellow countrymen Bicep with a fine EP of peak-time goodness for the Optimo Disco Plate series. Here the Northern Irishman returns to house pastures via an EP of saucer-eyed loveliness on Loft Records. The dreamy and ultra-positive A-side "Canna" is particularly ear pleasing, featuring as it does a tactile mix of Twin Peaks style chords, hustling acid bass, rave-era whistles and glistening, eight-bit melodies. On the flip, "Manaka" provides more dreamy positivity - think Adriatic sunsets and Mediterranean sunrises - while "Man Ray" sees him pay tribute to a master of surrealism via poignant electronics, lilting melody lines and some clattering drum machine percussion.

Review: Dallas-based vocalist, producer and percussionist Enois Scroggins has found musical success later in life. Despite his vintage - he's an '80s soul and funk survivor with roots in the scene of the '70s - it's only in the last decade that he's begun to release acclaimed material. Real-E sees him join forces with revivalist electrofunk duo The Touch Funk for a cheery romp through synth-laden boogie-funk pastures. As you'd expect, it's musically on-point, with Scroggins' lyrics and vocals perfectly complimenting the Touch Funk's analogue synths and drum machine rhythms. Along the way, they pay tribute to P-funk, electro, boogie and synth disco, with a string of handpicked guests swinging by to lend a hand.

Review: Here's something to moisten the palette of all those who enjoy atmospheric techno: a collaborative EP from Spanish stalwart Sverca and Italian ambient techno duo Voices From The Lake. Naturally, it's a hazy and mind-altering affair, with the trio first burying bustling, surprisingly intense drum beats beneath sprawling, sound design style textures on "Circa". The paranoid creepiness continues on the bolder "Isolation", where an almost constant synth loop rides a matter-or-fact techno kick-drum pattern. There's a noticeably dystopian feel about the buzzing riffs and foreboding electronics of "Beneath The Lines", while closer "Shado" sounds like a moody techno take on early British bleep, crossed with drone style soundscapes.

Review: When it comes to muscular, basement-ready slabs of Italo-disco, proto-house and sweaty disco nostalgia, you can't beat Luke Solomon and Nick Maurer's Powerdance series. For slab number four, they've slightly changed the blueprint, delivering a woozy, smile-inducing fusion of baggy vocals, Balearic disco shuffle and blue-eyed soul attitude. The A-side "A Safe & Happy Place (Extended Disco Mix)" is the one for sunshine sets and happy-go-lucky parties, while the flipside "A Safe & Happy Beat" veers back towards their usual mind-altering antics. A breathless dub that utilizes only short snippets of the original, it owes much of its power to sweaty drum machine hits and wild, undulating acid lines.

Review: London label Spinning Plates steps up for round three with the lesser known talents of Nekhsa throwing down some crucial electro styles. "132 Breaks" is an utterly minimalist slice of drum machine funk, and completely infectious with it, while "Some Jan" works a cheeky bassline rub into the sparse soundscape. "Back In 4" and "BIDNIZ" are both just as reduced in their construction, but then it's up to DJ Spider to weigh in with a pair of remixes that find the New York producer on savage form. His version of "BIDNIZ" is a dense, cloying workout loaded with sinister sound design, while "Some Jan" turns into an apocalyptic techno destroyer in his capable hands.
