  1. Gotta Hold On Me (12:13)
  2. Wildman (6:54)
Review: You have to hand it to Psychemagik. The duo is renowned for their crate-digging skills, as showcased on the various must-have compilations they've curated for Leng and Eskimo Recordings. Those digging skills come to the fore on their re-edit releases, too. In truth, few would be able to name the source material for "Gotta Hold On Me", an undulating, dubbed-out chunk of peak-time disco-soul built around spacey synth-bass, rising horn lines - judiciously smothered in space echo - and impassioned male vocals. Flipside "Wildman" is equally impressive, with jammed out electric piano solos doing their best to raise the temperature in cahoots with a Dinosaur style leftfield disco groove.

  1. Danny Daze & Shokh - "Aire" (8:24)
  2. Patrice Baumel - "Sorcery" (7:13)
Review: Almost 18 years on from its debut release, Kompakt Extra is just months away from notching up a century of releases. For 12" number 98, Kompakt's club-focused vinyl offshoot has snapped up a pair of heads-down, late night delights. Danny Daze and Shokh join forces on the A-side, laying down a pulsating chunk of trance-like dancefloor hypnotism whose power derives not from thunderous percussion (though the drum hits are solid enough), but rather restless arpeggio lines, spacey electronics and some mind-altering melodies. On the reverse, Patrice Baumel takes an altogether different approach, slamming down a formidably heavy chunk of bass-heavy techno wonkiness smothered in the sticky humidity of an unlikely jungle rave.

Review: Anyone that's seen Boston selector Kon spin in the past few years should pull up to the bumper and spend some time with this third transmission on his Star Time label. Centre stage is his much requested treatment of the George Benson standard "Give Me The Night" re-titled here as "Spirit Of The Party (Gimme The Night)" which rearranges proceedings to pull the original's closing harmony-based breakdown to the midpoint. Excellent stuff! Kon is a generous man however and there are two further edits on the flip to make this a triple trouble 12". "Love x Kon" is a stripped down to the bone rework with an almighty acapella-based finale, whilst "Star Of The Story" is all about that boogie filled electric bassline.

Review: Billy Woost may not have released much music back in his heyday around 1977, but the one album he did put together was enough to secure a place in the crosshairs of the consummate Italian groove archivists, Best Italy. Picking up the finest jams from Woost's back catalogue, we're presented with a three tracker dripping with classic disco charm. "Body, Body Love" comes in a previously unreleased disco form that cruises at an easy pace but packs plenty of punch, while "Please Touch Me" edges the intensity up with a steamy set of strings, brass and vocals. "Sleep" meanwhile taps into a Blockheads kind of funk, bright and bouncy and just a little left of centre, which of course makes it all the more special.

Review: Way back in 1992, John Mateo and Eddie Matos - then in the flush of youth and still establishing themselves as top-drawer deep house producers - donned the Raw Elements alias and released Back 2 Bay Six. 25 years on, the EP has been given the reissue treatment by the on-point Flash Forward camp. Musically, it remains one of the deepest, dubbiest and most alluring EPs in the duo's epic back catalogue. For proof, check the rolling organs, stripped-back percussion, huggable bass and impassioned vocal samples of "Back 2 Day Six", the jazzy swing of "Sax 5th Avenue" and the breezy basement bounce of standout closer "On The Train", whose off-kilter rhythm is particularly inviting.

Review: Sharif Laffrey is one of the great unsung heroes of Detroit's dance music scene, having been instrumental in putting on parties in the Motor City for many years and spinning records in all kinds of legendary spots. When he's not busy promoting, Laffrey also finds time to turn out productions under aliases such as Quadrant and Maersk. Primarily though, his recent work has been under his own name for the likes of Love On The Rocks and Discos Capablanca, who he returns to here with a single sided sure shot entitled "Always". It's a heated, jacking club track that screams of Laffrey's Detroit roots, with an early house thrust and wild 80s-style sampling that will set the party alight.

Review: Scalpel-wielding record dealer turned producer the Mighty Zaf is the man at the controls on this inspired 12". It sees the LoveVinyl co-founder rearrange a couple of vintage cuts from Brazilian musician Ed Motta. On the A-side he tackles "Ja!", an exquisite chunk of carnival-friendly jazz-funk/disco fusion that was first featured on the artist's 1993 album Ao Vivo. Zaf's edit is naturally sympathetic to Motta's original, subtly extending it in all the right places while removing a few bits and pieces here and there. Flip for the big man's fine rework of the arguably even more loved-up 1988 cut "Paradas de Lucas", where starry synths and passionate vocals ride delay-laden drum machine hits and a killer jazz-funk bassline. The sound of summer, without a doubt.

Review: Eccentric, California-based imprint Take Away has put out some impressive 12" singles since launching earlier in the year. Predictably, this two-tracker from the little-known Soul Reductions is another stone cold killer. A-side "Got To Be Loved" - a bouncy, pitched-up disco-house floorfiller that sits somewhere between Tiger & Woods and late '90s "French Touch" house - leads the way, sounding like the kind of cut that will quickly raise the temperature out on the dancefloor. Flipside "A Rose Is A Rose" is a deeper and woozier offering, delivering a rolling house re-interpretation of a boogie-era electrofunk gem with added filter effects.

Review: According to their online profile, Amorf is a "live experimental techno project". Quite how much improvisation went into this debut album is unclear, though we can confirm that it's really rather good. The Romanian trio begins by smothering a glitchy, minimal techno groove with tumbling piano lines on "Ouverture", before offering a warmer, richer and more musically expansive variation on the same theme ("Marquis of Dust"). There's a pleasingly deep and breezy feel to "Haze" (all smooth bass, electro-influenced beats, acid-style electronics and jazzy flourishes), while "Curiosity Step" sees them make merry with fuzzy electric piano solos and hypnotic, locked-in beats. Arguably best of all, though, is "Blending Light", an immaculate fusion of deep house and tech-house that's as dreamy and picturesque as they come.

Review: Serious summertime loving right here from Wah Wah's right hand maestro Scrimshire. Continuing to build on his impeccable editry reputation, here he provides three floor-ready feel good twists that do nothing but add to the originals' legacies. Chaka Khan's iconic slinky bassline gets all looped and tonked on "Sommer Love", Merry Clayton (who he's edited before with "Grandma's Hands") gets a little tempo injection and much more extension in the groove while McNeal + Niles' classic lolloping hazy soul jaunt enjoys a wry little electronic dusting. With improvisation placed at the forefront of the creative process, Font turns out functional club tracks with curious kinks and moments of intrigue worked into the structure. "Onda Tropical" is definitely DJ friendly with its insistent percussive framework, but there are interesting diversions, fills and edits peppered throughout. "Musica Moderna (CDS Tribute)" meanwhile rolls on a more consistent groove, with a more organic set of drums pitched right at the heart of a long and winding DJ set.

Review: Since starting their career with a couple of well-regarded EPs on Toy Tonics in 2013, Black Loops has been label hopping. This return to the German imprint follows four years spent churning out EPs for Gruuv, Neovinyl and, most recently, Pets Recordings. Opener "Le Mirage" is a bustling and bass-heavy affair, with melodic deep house pleasantries wrapping themselves around a chunky, U.S-garage influenced groove. The rhythmic skip and bass-heavy bounce continues on "Red Light", where fuzzy electric piano parts come to the fore, while "Sex (Part 2)" effortlessly joins the dots between the hazy loveliness of Italian dream house and the bustle of classic Kerri Chandler records. 'Sex", which boasts a wonderfully sleazy spoken vocal, completes another ear-pleasing package.

Review: It's all going on for Cervo at the moment. Having just launched the Banana Hill label with an excellent record from Majid Bekkas (that he also did an edit for), the UK-based producer has now been snapped up by Marcel Vogel's Lumberjacks In Hell label to drop more of his worldly edit science. "On Rhythm" leads the charge with confidence on the A-side, using a bubbling, Afro-infused disco-funk source and making it lean and mean for the floor. There's a distinctly Nigerian lilt to the guitars that cluck away through "Dancing Dream", but it's accompanied by bright chiming chords and a solid beat that will stand up to any contemporary house jam. "Banku" is even more explicitly modern, although still layered up with gorgeous vocals and percussion from Africa.

As pre-cursed by their "Shadow Works" EP last year, the nautical duo returns to submerse us to unfathomable depths with their first album since Symbiotics in 1999. Once again we're posed with unique scenarios and experiences that once question and entertain; the toxic bassline flotsam of the opener "Anguilla Electrica" sets the tone with high board dive into the physical dancefloor waves before we're hurled from atoll to island by highlights such as the dizzying dubsapce of "Prismatic Error" and the clipped warm kicks and hallucinatory textures of "Port Of Tangency". Singular sonics - we've been waiting for this for a very long time.

Although simple in structure, the analog sound engine has an unmistakable presence with subtle nuances that cannot be reproduced by a digital simulation; it's a great choice for acid house and many other styles of music. The step sequencer distilled from the Electribe is not only visually intuitive; it's also a powerful way to generate "free form" bass loops that will stimulate your inspiration.

Decksavers are specifically designed to keep your technology investment safe and sound. Decksavers are tailor-made to exacting standards to fit the Technics turntable like a glove. Rather than using cheaper inferior acrylic, each one is made from polycarbonate, a very hardwearing plastic used in bullet proof glass, and made to fit your gear as closely as possible. The use of polycarbonate means that thinner material can be used, making for discrete, strong yet attractive protection for your Technics turntable. Indeed, great care is taken to trim each Decksaver to achieve the best fit and still leave cables in place.

The cover has a very strong contruction with sufficient flat areas allowing support for CDJs, laptops, midi controllers, etc.

Here, he continues to impress with a superb double A-side for Dani Plessow's MCDE imprint. "Bermuda" is deliciously warm and summery, with jaunty boogie synths and cascading chords riding a smooth, shuffling deep house groove. "New Paradise" works the same formula hard, with dreamy, held-note chords and bubbly synthesizer melodies wrapping themselves around loose, analogue-sounding percussion and a rich bassline. If there were any doubts about his talents moving forward, this should dispel them. Clearly, Sutherland is here to stay.

To celebrate this fact, Geordie producer Smoove has put together "Main Sourced", a two-part cut-and-paste tribute that incorporates elements from tracks sampled by the group across the celebrated set, alongside carefully selected rap samples. His latest release - a first on 7" for some time - serves up two more expert reworks. On the A-side, he serves up a tightened-up, cut-down and to-the-point version of Wood, Brass & Steel's much-loved disco-funk shuffler, "Funkanova", finally introducing the original version's spiraling synths midway through. The origin of flipside "Sex" is better disguised, though its' combination of thrusting, low-slung funk breaks, heavy bass, wiggling sax lines and occasional, James Brown-like grunts packs a serious punch.

The Never End sees him pop up on Funkineven's on-point Apron imprint with a set that attractive drifts between woozy synthesizer ambience, breezy and melodious deep house, deep space drum & bass, Andres-ish jazziness and 21st century dream house positivity. Musically rich, hugely evocative and immaculately produced, the material served up by Harris is undeniably smooth, but with enough raw edges to please those who prefer their house a little scruffy and lo-fi.

Following Flash Forward's release of "Raw Basics" earlier this year comes the duo's follow-up also released in 92... "Back To Bay Six". Each of the four cuts strutting with blueprint funk. Loose drums, swaggering instrumentation and warm organs, there's a latent funk running throughout as the duo showed the world how it was done 25 years ago. To the core.

  2. The IT - "Months Of Mays" (feat Harry Dennis) (6:48)
  3. Spaces & Places - "New Rivers" (part 4) (9:56)
Review: According to the information given to us by the label, Attitude is "the first 12" from the forthcoming compilation series What The Fuck Do You Know About Deephouse". Regardless of whether this is actually the case, the three tracks showcased here are superb. Ron Trent is in exceptional form on A-side "Wet", a synth-heavy, head-in-the-clouds chunk of Detroit techno influenced deep house that's as evocative and emotion-rich as we've come to expect from the Prescription co-founder. On the B-side, The IT joins forces with Harry Dennis on the sublime, organic deep house beauty that is vocalist "Months of Mays", before Spaces & Places delivers the breathtakingly picturesque "New Rivers (Part 4)", which boasts a ragged, acid-influenced bassline and some wonderfully breezy piano solos.

Review: Aus alumni Rob Glassett brings his Fold feels to Shall Not Fade: four tracks of jazz-tinged classically trained house music that nods heavily towards the Chicago sound. "Alan Whickers" pumps with a big filtered sensation that doubles up into quite a punch on the second drop, "Knickerbocker Ave" is as tasty as it sounds with a light broken feel to the drums and delicate jazz piano loop while "Doin' Bits" is grounded in more of a NYC house feel with its insistent vocal sample rises and relentless groove. Need a little 23rd century soul? Look no further than Will & Ink's Frits Wentink remix. Vibes.

Review: On its initial vinyl and download release late last year, Cherry was proclaimed by critics as being one of Chromatics' strongest albums to date. Given that the Portland band have now released seven acclaimed sets, that's some claim. This first "deluxe" CD edition adds previously unheard cuts and alternative versions, but it's the core set - featured on the first half of the CD - that really sparkles. As you might expect, it's not only full of the atmospheric, slow motion synth-pop with which they made their name, but also a swathe of cuts heavily influenced by the cinematioc soundtrack work Jonny Jewel has been concentrating on since their previous full-length dropped back in 2012. In other words, it's quite possibly Chromatics' most evocative and rounded set to date.

Review: Justin plays by his own rules... We all know this. Late of !!! and Out Hud, in the last few years he's been responsible for a slew of universally charged and eclectically fused dancefloor blunderbusses. "No Vacancy" follows two deep fried twists of Shit Robot and Felix Dickenson earlier this year. Chugging but light footed, heavy but charged with crisp uplifting elements, oozing just as much dub sentiment as house, all smelted together with comicity, "No Vacancy" is a surefire go-to party-lifter... And will be for a long time to come. No one's laying down grooves quite like Van De Volgen right now.

Minimal/Tech House
  1. Something Else (11:22)
Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: It's a good time to be an Artificial Intelligence fan. Hot on the heels of their "Reprisal" EP on Headz they return to their Integral mothership for four more understated slices of golden drum & bass. "Ask Yourself" teases with shades of cut up vocal soul over a heavily textured groove and loose percussive elements while "True Colours" goes all-out dreamy with a string hook and vocal to die for. Deeper into the EP we chow for the barbed banquet of futurist soul that is "Waiting For" followed by the soothing stepper palette of "Holding Out". Truth.

Review: No one can stop Joaquin Joe Claussel from delivering the absolute best in house. It's just what the man does best, and he's likely to continue churning out eats and new productions on a constant basis for the foreseeable future. This is the third part of his Unofficial Edits Overdubs & Unreleased Remixes, and it all starts with the moody, soul-induced lament of "You Owe Me", followed by the livelier and more danceable disco banger "Pass It On". On the flip, "Never Danced Before" is a banging little revisioning of the cult disco hit, and "Queen Africa" breaks out the jazz horns to come through with an 11 minute journey that will please everyone from the house heads to the soul divas. Yes, Joe!

Review: Having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent Udacha label, Russian duo Gamayun now take their talents to Hesperian Sound Division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. "Golden Ratio" leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets Gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. "Ascension" takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. "Untitled" has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while "Uvolnenie" edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

Review: With its bulging track list and a smattering of tidy remixes, Lootbeg's latest EP is undoubtedly great value for money. As usual, his original productions are on point, with the loose, dreamy and loved-up "The Presence of Time Travellers" - all lolloping, stripped-back machine percussion, liquid synthesizer lines and bustling bass - setting the tone. Luv Jam impressively turns the track into a moody chunk of acid psychedelia, before Lootbeg serves up a ridiculously rush-inducing "DJ FX Tool" built around the original's new age melody line. Over on the B-side, the Leipzig producer dives into deeper waters via the luscious "Abduction Reset" and spacey "Close Encounter Type III". Luv Jam's blissful ambient version of the latter cut completes a brilliant package.

Review: Chicago legend DJ Jes has been releasing steadily since 1995 on legendary imprints such as Siesta, Afterhours and NRK, through to Karlovak and even his own Fresca Recordings imprint that ran from 2000 - 2003. This release follows up 2014's Closer To Freedom EP on Tardis: a label run by Eli Verveine and Oscar Schubaq that pursues the dubbier end of minimal house. It starts off in fine fashion with the funky and slightly discofied loops of "No Fooling"on the A side. On the flip, the title track "Between The Lines" is tough deep house with delay drenched keys and gritty SP1200 style beats while the deep tribalist groove of "Lost" is trippy afterhours style business. More great work from an underrated hero of the Windy City underground on offer here.

Review: D.Ko bossman Flabaire steps away from his own stable for more silly phase adventures on Organic. Still neck deep in the research, still highly esoteric, he takes us where he left us in 2015 with his last single for the Strawberry Fields label with three delicious slices of evocative, feel-heavy classical house music. "M&P" shimmers with early progressive elements that twinkle like Twilo, "4Const" hits with a softer piano-stroked foreground but much more driven beat dynamic while "Alpha 2" brings us back into the future with a cosmic funk odyssey. Knock out material, as always.

Review: This belated second 12" on Beauty & The Beat (the label's debut landed in 2015) comes courtesy of crate-digging DJ/producer Atemi and a revolving cast list of guest musicians. Opener "My People" - an "ode to friendship" according to the sleeve notes - sets the tone, with Atemi lacing African vocals over a gentle, bongo-laden beat, sun-kissed keys and woozy flutes. It's impeccable sunshine music, all told. The fluid collective opts for a different approach on the rather epic "Bamba Diounalene", a loose, soft touch dancefloor workout full of distinctive guitars, chanted vocals and post Afrobeat grooves. Japanese producer-in-London Kay Suzuki makes his presence felt on the flip, brilliantly wrapping a rolling, tribal drum groove in dreamy chords and spacey electronics.

Review: Los Angeleno AshTreJinkins is up next for London/Tokyo joint venture NCS, who as some of you may know by now: only release in very limited runs: so get in quick! Named after the famed American soft drink that tastes like mouthwash, the Root Beer EP features four servings of lo-fi house which will certainly fit in with the status quo currently set by the likes of Lobster Theremin, E-Beamz et al. The tough and driving vintage techno of "Dead Or Wounded" kicks off the EP in good from, while "Frozen" with its hypnotic chord progression and jagged rhythm patterns create a unique groove that really gets off the grid. Finally, the tribal house tool "Adware Nigga" calls to mind Canadian Hayden Andre Brown's seminal jams from the early '90s, but backed by some L.I.E.S. style analogue techno grunt.
