  3. Munk - "The Bolero Bunuel" (Red Axes version) (5:22)
  4. The Barking Dogs - "Your High" (feat Tom Trago) (6:21)
Review: Toy Tonics' Mushroom House series has so far sparkled, delivering a series of "weirdo house" inspired EPs full of tracks that look to "ethno, Afro and psychedelic" music for inspiration. Each of the producers involved in this third installment predictably hit the mark, with Ponty Mython's trippy opener - think rolling tropical deep house with hallucinatory flourishes - expertly setting the tone. Fast-rising producer Kiwi steals the show with a low-slung fusion of dub disco and smacked out Afro-house, while the Barking Dogs join forces with Tom Trago for a seductive trip into cosmic deep house territory. Red Axes also do a terrific job turning Munk's "The Bolero Brunel" into a hazy chunk of nu-disco psychedelia.

Review: Having introduced Spanish ambient pioneer Suso Saiz to a wider audience via last year's superb Odisea retrospective, Music From Memory has scored a new album from the long-serving musician and composer. Rainworks was recorded over a two-month period in early 2016, and sees Saiz evocatively joining the dots between Jonny Nash style guitar-led ambience, gently undulating, piano-driven mood pieces, evocative collages of found sounds and field recordings (see opener "From Memory & The Sky"), and ghostly, effects-laden ambient. He also finds time to pay tribute to Steve Reich style American minimalism on the cyclical brilliance of "They Don't Love Each Other".

Review: The ever-essential deep house super group Mandar make the leap to an album in fine style after a few years of unbeatable EPs on their own Oscillat Music label and elsewhere. The self-titled LP is spread across a whopping five 12"s, but it gives latecomers a chance to catch up on some of their previous smashers such as "La Bocca" and "Delon" as well as presenting some fresh wares from the joint creative forces of Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie and Samuel Andre Madsen. The grooves bump just right, the moods unfurl like toffee-flavoured smoke and with these 12 jams Mandar prove once again why they're at the top of the deep house game.

  1. Underneath My Feet (2:36)
  2. Guilty (3:34)
Review: Nicole "Lady" Wray has reinvented herself in recent years, swapping the contemporary, radio-friendly '90s R&B of her youth for a sound heavily influenced by vintage, 1960s and '70s soul and funk. It's a blend that was explored on last year's superb Queen Alone full-length. The two tracks showcased on this 7" were both featured on that album. "Underneath My Feet" is particularly potent, with Wray offering a rasping, impassioned vocal that seems to soar above the triple-time backing track. "Guilty", with its sweet guitars, harmony backing vocals and rock solid funk breakbeat, sounds a little like some of Sharon Jones' more poignant moments.

Review: The legacy of homegrown Australian rock in the '80s may be dominated by somewhat boisterous and boorish forces in the mainstream, wiith the like of Midnight Oil, Jimmy Barnes, INXS and John Farnham comprising the national heroes, yet cultural stereotyping would ignore a whole plethora of underground artists that went almost completely unnoticed yet continue to delight some thirty plus years on. 'Oz Waves', compiled by maverick DJ Steele Bonus, includes the unlikely likes of MX Ultra & The Assassins, Zerox Dreamflesh and The Horse He's Sick, yet their minimal electronics, dub-tinged strangeness and post-punk dreamscapes sound like another weird world - one on a thrilling knife-edge between past, present and future.

Review: Since returning to action last year after a near two-year hiatus, Koos 'Ion' Ludwig has barely put a foot wrong. For Real We Are Not For You marks his first appearance on Toi.Toi. Musik, and predictably continues his fine run of form. On the A-side you'll find "Not For You", a woozy and slippery concoction where off-kilter electronic bleeps and delay-laden blips rise above a skewed, bass-heavy rhythm. Turn the record over and you'll find "Are We For Real", a wonderfully evocative combination of slow-burn acid lines, ghostly chords, low register cello strings, pulsing pads, and mind-altering, minimalist house percussion. It tends towards the melancholic, but is all the more impressive for that.

This time the Startree Siren is operating under his own name with two precision floor-aimed disco cuts. "Mirror Test" carries all of house music's most timeless elements and harmonic textures with refreshing light-footed melodic flurries while "Replace Yourself" ups the momentum but softens the focus as more drawn out strikes overlap, wave and melt between each other in a dreamlike hypnotic stage. Ageless.

Review: Since slipping out in 1983, Midori Takada's debut album, Through The Looking Glass, has become something of a sought-after item amongst ambient enthusiasts (with hugely inflated online prices to match). Happily, WRWTFWW Records has decided to reissue it on CD, allowing those without overblown budgets/oodles of disposable income to wallow in its' gentle, humid majesty. Remarkably, Takada not only composed and produced it, but also played every instrument, including marimbas, recorder, vibraphone, harmonium, and all manner of things you can hit and shake. The resulting tracks remain hugely beguiling, sitting somewhere between a dreamy take on traditional Japanese music, the classic ambient albums of Brian Eno, and the s gentle, sweat-soaked explorations of The Chi Factory.

Review: Brother's Vibe hit a certifiable high point with "El Baile", a house jam that has stood the test of time with its sunny disposition and Latin spirit. Now SOM Records have invited Tony Lionni to revisit the jam with vocalist Juan Pachanga in tow, crafting a fresh confection of deep house perfection timed just right for the days getting longer. The instrumental on the A side is the kind of jam that could roll on endlessly and never grate, so laid back are the pattering percussion and shimmering piano chords. For a little more presence, Juan Pachanga's turn on the vocal version is just the right kind of added treat.

Review: Germany's Dana Ruh has been a consistent source of quality house and techno since her first recordings began to appear at the end of the noughties; the artist has offered new and compelling forms of the genres on a regular basis, and it's no surprise that she's earned spots on some of the most sought-after imprints like Ostgut Ton or Cocoon Recordings. Recently, however, she's decided to take things into her own hands thanks to the emergence of her own label, the aptly named Cave Recordings. "Things That" spearheads the Cave Jams EP with a lovely, full-bodied groove full of tribal spirit and improvisational drum sequences, while "Make You" takes a few lessons from early era NYC house thanks to some absolutely divine percussion work in the same vein as the great Romanthony. "Go Hmmm!?" is a proper live jam, all rough and raw, and ready for the true house heads to deploy onto the hungry underground masses.

Review: Having impressed with a string of bass-heavy house cuts on his Take Control label, Sooney has earned a big money transfer to Hot Creations. "Back To The Music" is a bombastic, club-ready affair, with the London producer expertly joining the dots between the mind-altering sub-bass and skittish beats of UK garage, the saucer-eyed positivity of early UK hardcore, and the melodious warmth of big room tech-house. Fellow UK producer Route 94 weighs in with a slightly deeper but no less bass-heavy remix, before Sooney fixes his booming UK bass influences to the muscular drums of Twilo-era Danny Tenaglia on the thrusting "Afraid of the Dark". All three tracks are undeniably large, suggesting that we're going to hear a lot more from Sooney when UK festival season rolls around.

Review: After building his reputation via releases on Plus 8 and M_nus, amongst others, Julian Jeweil has secured a big-money move to Drumcode. As you'd expect, all four tracks on this first label outing tend towards the forthright, with title track "Rolling" - a sweaty fusion of booming arpeggio bass, pounding kick-drums, foreboding riffs, metallic hits and drum machine handclap fills - setting the agenda. The "build and drop techno" blueprint is explored further on "Venice", before the experienced Frenchman opts for some full-throttle antics on "Blue". Sensing listeners need a little bit of a breather, he dips the tempo a little on "Traffic", which boasts some deliciously psychedelic acid lines.

And for good reason; "Tighten Up Your Love Bone" is a gutsy power R&B soul joint while "Is This Really Love" takes its foot off the gas for moments of pure come-to-bed soul many years before White and Hayes made it their signature. Don really was the real deal.

Since making his debut on Diynamic in 2009, he's put out a string of impressive singles covering everything from hazy deep house to hypnotic minimal techno. The expansive Letters and Numbers is his second release for Apollonia, and sees the Ukrainian showcase six cuts over two weighty slabs of wax. Most of the tracks explore subtle variations on a deep house theme, albeit with extensive use of tech-house style electronics. There's plenty to excite throughout, from the funk-fuelled tech-house swing of opener "Rdm37", and gently off-kilter bounce of "MPC13", to the pleasingly melodious, ear-catching closer "Zxy22".

Review: In line with the timely reappraisal of all things R&S related, the resurgent Apollo have seen the opportunity to bring one of their most celebrated records back for another round. Aphex Twin's ambient recordings mature magnificently with age, sounding ever richer and more emotive as the rest of electronic music continues to play catch up all around. From the gentle breakbeats of "Xtal" to the aquatic techno lure of "Tha", the airy rave of "Pulsewidth" to the heartwrenching composition of "Ageispolis", every track is a perennial example of how far ambient techno could reach even back then. It's just that no-one quite had the arm-span of Richard D. James.

Review: The legendary Spaniard Juan Rico (Reeko) aka Architectural on Maceo Plex's Ellum Audio? We're just as perplexed (no pun intended) as you are! But if this is welcoming a sudden change of direction for the label, then we're all for it. Expanding on previous efforts, Rico further explores the dubbier shades of hypnotic techno once again for the Heaven Can Wait EP. "Dream Driver" opening proceedings in a droney and trance inducing fashion, with main room/pre-peak time adrenaline in mind. It's a more subdued, deeper and minimal affair on the rather lush atmospherics of "Hidden" while on the flip we've got "Surreal Restaurant"; which is most likely inspired by grabbing a doner kebap after a long hight of clubbing in the German capital and musically it's fully of icy, cavernous delay drenched aesthetics drifting off into nice trails of reverb.

Review: After a brief flirtation with Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, Jared Wilson is back on Jerome Hill's Super Rhythm Trax imprint. Predictably, he's in a retro-futurist kind of mood, delivering tracks that tip a wink to a variety of vintage house and techno productions. He begins with the Larry Heard style warmth, Chez Damier percussion and Detroit techno cymbal lines of "Getting That Feelin", before diving headfirst into the world of classic Chicago jazz on heavyweight acid wriggler "It's The Message". The B-side begins with the ghostly chords, intelligent techno electronics and mind-altering acid lines of "Midnight On Ecorse Creek", before Wilson caps a fine EP via the Mr Fingers style deep house-jack of "Acid Feeling".

Review: France's Varhat is back after some great tracks on Crocus and Aku but who can forget that killer edit of Stablo he did last year. This guy's is on a roll and one to watch, which says a lot considering the amount of talent coming of Paris at the moment. This time it's for Ukranian wunderkind Mulen's imprint and it's a as deep and as rolling as you'd expect. The whole EP is great as a whole but really shines on "Track 2 " with its pitched down acid bassline and those sweet immersive pads. "Track 3" is properly deep with its smooth bassline, tight rhythm and those swirling and hypnotic synths working a treat.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

Review: Ape Into Jam man Jamie Paton has been rather quiet of late, with his last vinyl excursion appearing on Stuart "Chuggy" Leath's [Emotional] Especial label some two years back. This surprise return sees the former Cage & Aviary member deliver a pair of analogue-rich, new wave-influenced instrumental dubs for those who like their electronic music sparse and trippy. A-side "Telefutura" is a pitched-down treat; a spine-tingling fusion of chugging drum hits, heavy sub bass and gently bubbling synthesizer melodies. Flip for the dub-fuelled B-side "Blind Summit", where woozy, mid-range synthesizer melodies cluster around loose, jazz-fuelled drums and a fluid electronic bassline.

Review: March has kicked off with some stellar house and techno pieces, but a return from the Parassela crew has made this the best month in a long while. We'd been truly missing this collaborative project between The Analogue Cops and Blawan, three minds which together helped to truly instil a sound within the contemporary house and techno game over the last five years. If you're listening to raw, stripped-back house these days, it's down to projects such as Parassela; that post-2010 wave of goodness very much includes these guys in the list. They return for one of their inimitable faux white labels on the Cops' own mighty Restoration label, and it's clear that they crew had been missing each other's company as of late. "Track 1" is classic Parassela nastiness thanks to a dark, intricate mould of hardware beats and distorted melodies with that unmistakable, tape-kissed hiss, and "Track 2" delivers more of the same except that the groove is more minimal here. On the flip, "Track 3" injects more of a house-centric movement into the equation, while "Track 4" heads off into sparser, more desolate territories that remind us of just how multi-talented this group of producers are. Unmissable, really...

Review: Mohammed Al Harbiti, Adam Stromstedt and Flord King's Lyssna Records is now on its third release, and the label is beginning to pick up jus the right sort of momentum to make a impact on the vast, bottomless pit that is the deep house scene. What you need to be able to do that is plenty of style and a fresh way of constructing 4/4 patterns, something which Levi Verspeek has clearly nailed on the opening "256". Peshka's "Miracle" is also refreshingly off-kilter, meandering its loose drums over a hazy bed of washed-up sonics, while Flord King's "Steff Off" uses the minimal formula to deliver its mesmerising glow, and Adam Stromstedt's "HM 2016" is probably the best example of traditional deep house that we've heard since the close of that treacherous 2016. Quality house escapades...

Review: Two years on from his last outing under the alias, Green Door Studio engineer Stuart Evans delivers a new Sordid Sound System EP. As usual, dusty old electronic instruments and analogue hardware are the Glaswegian's tools of choice, with hard-to-pigeonhole thrills being the result. He begins with the Golden Teacher-ish trip that is "The Grove", where echo-laden vocal snippets and dub-wise cut-ups wrap their way around acid-fired electronics and a chugging groove. The densely percussive "Fear Eats The World" sees him wander off towards post-punk krautrock pastures, while "Blues Pour Vivienne" is a slipped waltz beamed down from another planet. A fine EP is drawn to a close by "Sordida Discoteca", a delay-laden voyage into proto-techno territory in the company of a gaggle of Italo-disco and EBM freaks.

Review: Open Recordings continue their mission to champion quality chunky deep house wares from a range of artists on their third release. This time around Italian duo DNArt take the lead with two original jams, and they get things heating up nicely with "Short Story" before tripping things out on the swirling funk of "ZZYZX". On remix duties, Nick Beringer drops a tightly wound minimal house shuffle all over "Short Story" and then Frazer Campbell works up a deadly stripped down version of "ZZYZX", nudging the mellow tones of the original into prime late night material.

Review: The Synthetic Gold story continues to unfold in the most curious nooks and crannies of the minimal techno scene, as this third volume welcomes in tracks selected by Anestie Gomez. Khan is in a looped up, insistent cycle loaded with alien synth tones and a focused rhythmic hiccup of a beat, truly aiming for the psych-out end of the night. Eloi Brunelle makes things a touch funkier on "Neneh", deploying choice splashes of dubbed out colour in between the sharp strut of the drums. Andres Garcia then spreads himself across the B-side with the loping funk of "Invisivel", working all manner of freaky sounds around the scuffed sway of the beats.

Review: Over the years Walter Jones has brought his smooth as silk disco sound to the likes of Westbound Records, DFA and Permanent Vacation, so there's no doubting his proficiency. Now he slides up to Whiskey Pickle with a set of pristine shakers that nod to his experience in the field, not least on opening track "Razzamatazz" with its chic lead lines and insistent groove. "Harmonic Urgency" is a sleazier affair with its cheeky bassline and slower tempo, but by way of contrast "The Grinder" ups the ante with a propulsive house backbone behind the sizzling disco elements. "Making Love" provides an alternate ending to the record with spaced out beatless daubs of synth.
