Review: This man's output is anything but boring this year. Previously spotted on E-Beamz and Shall Not Fade he now joins the party at Shall Not Fade sister label Lost Palms. Once again it's straight to the floor jacking business with no care for unnecessary polish. "Different Dates" is pounding and acidic, "Lonely Valentine" chugs with a dreamier, swooning feel while "I Know You Want To" flexes some superb vocal sample artistry. Remix-wise Baltra adds a little acid silkier synths to the mix with sexy results. Say yeah.

  4. Dancer On The Shore (Jex Opolis remix) (5:49)
Review: Since first gate crashing our consciousness back in 2009, New York three-piece Lemonade has released a string of fine records, most of which saunter between woozy Balearic synth-pop and leisurely downtempo grooves. "Dancer on the Shore", their first release for three years, inhabits similar sonic territory, offering a fusion of Peaking Lights style dubbed-out synth-pop grooves, glassy-eyed vocals, tumbling acoustic guitar flourishes and humid steel drum melodies. Fellow NYC resident Jex Opolis provides two stellar remixes: a chunky, rolling, acid-flecked nu-disco dub and a drowsier vocal interpretation that's as ear pleasing as they come. The other interpretation comes from Justin Strauss and Bryan Mette under the Whatever/Whatever alias and strays further towards acid-driven Italo-disco/deep house fusion territory.

Review: For his latest trick, Paris-based deep house veteran Phil Weeks has re-made Evelyn 'Champagne' King's 1982 boogie smasher "Love Come Down" with the assistance of long-serving vocalist Ladybird. Her interpretation of King's vocal - half sung, half spoken, and simultaneously both soulful and sleazy - works particularly well on the "Main Mix", which sits somewhere between reverential electrofunk and rolling contemporary house. Of the various alternative mixes, it's the chunky, effects-laden Dub - clearly inspired the NYC proto-house movement of the early-to-mid-'80s - that stands out, though the stripped-back "Ghetto Mix" is pretty tasty, too. As updates of stone cold classics go, this particular version of "Love Come Down" is rather good.

Review: Dortmund producer Mr Fries was signed to Wolf Music after handing over a CD of demos at a gig. He subsequently made his first appearance on the established deep house label in February 2016. This belated follow-up is packed full of hazy, club-ready treats, from the sample-heavy deep house jazziness of "Justafan" and Moonrise Hill Material style dancefloor warmth of "Anotherbeer", to the jazz-funk influenced slickness of "Indarkdayz (feat Pete De Haan)", where snaking saxophone solos wrap themselves around a wonderfully tactile groove. Throw in a couple of head-nodding interludes (one of which is also turned into a chunk of glitchy deep house by Lab AKA Labat), and you have another essential EP from the talented German youngster.

Smooth, subtle and jazzier than a teacher's tie, "Pushin' Weight" rolls and wriggles with a signature slippery Soopasoul funk groove coated with emphatic, cinematic horns. Review: The latest Crimes Of The Future comes from Dimitri Distant and LVRIN, two emergent artists with a penchant for pitch black grooves steeped in the kind of acidic, wavey styles that COTF are consistently striking gold with. "Blasphemy" is a powerful slice of reductionist acid that uses a bare minimum of elements to create a sinister atmosphere to strike fear into the hearts of unwitting dancers. "Dead Sunday" is no slouch in the creepy department either, its clattering beats and bubbly acid line straining against a tape-stretched backdrop of synthesizer malaise. "Achromatic" switches stance to slow, undead electro soaked in embalming fluid and filtered through a B-movie veil for maximum guttural impact.

Review: Thule are on an unstoppable roll at the moment, both mining the archive and doing a great service to the next generation of techno producers in Iceland. The deep, dubby headspace most readily associated with the label continues in abundance with the emergence of Waage, who under the tutelage of Thule old guard Exos has taken to production like a natural. There's a supremely reduced air about "W1", but the rubbery bassline simply can't be argued with. The dub techno tropes are out in full force on "W2" though, with some sumptuous chords that come on like cracking ice. "W3" then pushes even further out into that heady space where minor key chords can never have enough reverb before the sinister, simmering creep of "W4".

Review: Tenderlonious and Dennis Ayler first joined forces in the studio last year, with the first fruits of their combined labours (a fine cut called "Put it On") appearing on Ayler's first 7" single for 22a. They clearly enjoyed working together, because they've now laid down an entire album of collaborative efforts. Heavily rooted in jazz, broken beat and vintage Herbie Hancock material, the album's genius lies in its energetic fluidity, thrilling percussive looseness and the duo's refreshing "anything goes" approach. Listing all of the sounds and styles represented would take forever, but suffice to say it's one of the most vibrant, colourful and hard-to-pigeonhole sets we've heard for a while.

Review: The seemingly unstoppable rise of Ross From Friends (the producer, rather than actor David Schwimmer) continues via the South London beat-maker's most expansive release to date: a 12" double-pack stuffed full of goodness. As usual, you can expect plenty of samples that sound like they've been taken from malfunctioning reel to reel tape machines, ear-pleasing synthesizer melodies, wayward drum machine hits and squeezable basslines of the sort that once marked out '80s electrofunk bangers. Most of the tracks are in a lo-fi deep house vein (you'll be unsurprised to hear), though there are one or two skewed downtempo diversions that rank amongst the producer's most intriguing tracks to date.

Review: Since launching last year, Ari Goldman's World Building label has delivered a couple of killer EPs that look to vintage '90s house for inspiration. It's rather fitting, then, that the imprint's latest 12" is a reissue of an obscure white label from 1995. "Smiling Faces" saw One Man's Quest (AKA Bob Vega and Douglas Johnson) brilliantly re-invent the Rare Earth classic of the same name. While the A-side club versions - think bumpin', soulful, ultra-deep, organ-sporting New Jersey deep house - are undeniably brilliant, the real gems can be found on the flipside. Here, as on the original 1995 Vandal Records 12", the forgotten production pair re-cast the song as a slo-mo chunk of hazy, piano-heavy "R&B". Loved-up, blissful and genuinely soulful, they're thrilling covers in their own right. Simply essential, all told.

Review: Last year, we were rather impressed by the first 12" in the Same Speed Edits series. While the re-edits themselves were impressive, it was the obscurity of the South American source material that excited us. This follow-up sees the mystery editor take his or her scalpel to a pair of vintage samba-disco delights. We're particularly enjoying the rising jazz-funk synths, Azymuth style keys and rolling samba-disco grooves of sun-kissed opener "Samba Operator", though "Numero Dois (Shit Samba)" is, if anything, even better. With tactile Rhodes solos and hazy, freestyle vocals catching the ear, it's a pleasingly Balearic rework that certainly ticks all the right boxes.

Review: The limited, hand-stamped presentation of the Canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. Nyra's pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like "Opening Rhyme" are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. While the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. "Tape Trek" is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. "Galaktik" meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it's far from an obvious throwback track. Suffice it to say, we'll have whatever Nyra's having.

If it soundtracks any particular time of a pool party it's when everyone starts pushing each other it. Joyously buzzy. Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

Review: The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping them for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on their sound, the band enlisted two giants of underground hip-hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection.

Review: Since launching back in 2015, the Dewaele brothers' Waffles series has been responsible for some of the best re-edits around. The series' genius lies not in the floor-friendly nature of the showcased reworks - that goes without saying - but in the unashamedly weird and wonderful source material the Belgian siblings choose to play around with. Few will know the original version of "Poland Waffle", a sludgy and sleazy mutant disco workout full of heavy, dub disco style bass, hypnotic drums, alien electronics and a half-sung, half-whispered vocal refrain ("Red light... blue light"). As for "Croatia White", you'll struggle to find a more muscular and mind-altering chunk of post-Italo European disco. In other words, this serving of Waffles is every bit as tasty as its predecessors.

Review: London duo duo Nick Harriman and Alfie Granger-Howell aka Dusky are back on their 17 Steps imprint with yet more deep and slinky tech house killers aimed squarely at late night dancefloors. The sexy and emotive opener "Cold Heart" relies on soothing elements: warm pad textures, pitched up vocal sound bites and house organ progressions bound to get some hands in the air. "Psychic Life Coach" gets more of a bump on with its swing fuelled shuffle and layer upon layer of hypnotic synth work, which is perfect to use as sturdy transition track. On the flip, "Bowed" is undoubtedly the most adrenalised track on here and perfect to lead into the peak time with its evocative strings backed by tight rhythms patterns and a neon-lit arpeggio straight out of a Moroder or Orlando record: hot! Finally "Balfour Betty" closes out the EP in fine style with this uplifting number; once again utilising some rich and vibrant arpeggios from classic synths, building up to pure dancefloor euphoria: sounds like Sunday night up at Panorama Bar!

Review: D'Marc Cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. Now he comes to Altered Moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener "Always On My Mind". There's space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of "Blanket Statement" demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. "Mozaic" is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while "SteamFunk" revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. Plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

The record opens up with the ominous, dramatic tones of "Belgrade", all searing synth swells and bloated drums working towards some cinematic apocalypse scenario. On the B-side, "Croque Trans Croque" has a cooler head but instead aims to unsettle with its off-key metal chimes atop a steady-ticking disco rhythm, and then "Rex Ingram" finishes the EP off with yet more surreal beatdowns that will send the party in a very interesting direction indeed.

Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Juniper, the Manchester-based duo who showed much promise with early outings on Underground Quality and the like. Having previously popped up on a various artists 12", they return to the ever-essential meandyou with a strong statement of intent, packing five tracks into an EP that presents their subversive style immaculately. "Indigo Children" is a head-turning cut that fuses uptempo Motor City style electro and techno with industrial tones, while "Life Source Negative" switches stance for a beautiful, craftily constructed drift into woozy deep house. Every track is noteworthy on this release, balancing immediacy and warmth against experimental textures in a way that sits very comfortably on meandyou.

  2. Takaaki Itoh - "Monobehaviour" (6:41)
  3. Iori - "Mist" (6:29)
  4. DJ Nobu - "Ufo" (6:13)
Review: Infamous Tbilisi club Bassiani is one of the hallmarks of the emergent Georgian party scene, and its in-house label is adding to the respected reputation of the place with a strong cast of characters occupying each release. There's a distinct Japanese bent to the third volume, leading in with Wata Igarashi's verdant synth-fest "Stratosphere", a truly cosmic slice of modern techno. Takaaki Itoh takes things in a darker direction with the super-linear "Monobehaviour", while Iori breaks things up with the atmospheric offbeat kick of "Mist". That leaves it to scene leader DJ Nobu to complete the circle with a tripped out set of twinkling notes and off-kilter grooves like only he can do.

  3. Locked Club - "80.8 FM" (5:21)
  4. Locked Club, RLGN - "Tsukare" (5:05)
Review: This new collaborative EP from Russia's Private Persons provides a healthy dose of twisted electro-minded tech that should appeal to all sorts of DJs seeking that 'raw' edge. This new pile driver comes from the minds of Locked Club and RLGN, both of them new to the scene and hungrily to deliver some good old dread into the dance floor. "Bosozoku" and "Baikal Boogie" are both made of the same, twisted sort of highly abrasive metallic percussion, and should light up more than a few light bulbs to fans of the Bunker stable. Over on the B-side, Locked Club appears on his own for "80.8 FM", an FX-heavy juggernaut with nothing but merciless energy at its core, whereas the duo are back together on the punchy warehouse techno of "Tsukare". Cold and effective.

  3. Thomass Jackson - "Fantomas" (6:26)
  4. Inigo Vontier - "Namaste" (6:38)
Review: It's not often we get an insight into the electronic music of South America, so all hail the arrival of Calypso from Mexico's Inigo Vontier and Argentina's Thomass Jackson. The tracks featured certainly strike a unique chord, with Mendrix weaving a seductive, noirish tale full of brooding guitar and slow ticking drums, while "Colossio" takes on a darkwave tone on the wonderfully creepy "Esta En Mi". The label bosses tackle the B side, with Jackson's "Fantomas" sporting a sharper dancefloor sensibility without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Vontier rounds the EP out with the weirdo boogie throwdown of "Namaste", sure to pique the interest of anyone locked into the sound coming out of the speakers.

  3. To The Moon & Back (9:16)
Review: Triptil's dubby swings of minimal techno are growing with noticeable pace, and we're happy to see the artist back into motion on his own Feno Volana imprint this week. "Esimene" kicks off with a 9+ minute voyage across sparse, ambient planes, all of it guided and pushed forwards by a full-bodied beat swing that's not too dissimilar from the sort of material constructed by Villalobos. "Oldiegoldie" kick starts the flipside with a more housey mentality, kickgin and swinging its way through ample hi-hat infusions, while "To The Moon & Back" gives us a rawer, looser sort of groove that would work very well next to STL's material. Crunch-house and beyond!

Review: This "Special Edition" of Lord Echo's recent third full-length, Harmonies, seems to be aimed at DJs. Whereas the original pressing contained the same tracks on one piece of wax, this version stretches the same tracks over two super-loud, heavyweight records. Formatting aside, the album itself is something of a head-in-the-clouds, feet-on-the-floor treat. It features the Kiwi producer working with a range of collaborators - Tony Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop and regular studio buddy Mara TK included - to serve up intoxicating cuts that brilliantly fuses reggae, dub and rocksteady rhythms with elements borrowed from disco, Afro-soul, Afro-funk, spiritual jazz and, more surprisingly, techno. It's a hugely vibrant and entertaining set, offering a good balance between dancefloor vibrations and more laidback concoctions.

Review: It's all about THAT bassline... An era/career/dancefloor-defining loose and slappy groove laid down by cult band and Jarmels-affiliates The Whole Darn Family. A joyous record for all selectors as it stands, the 45" series does what it does best with a sample-craft dot-joining pair-up with another essential floor-burner: EPMD's 1987 debu "It's My Thing". Two serious classics right here.
