Review: Twenty years ago it sounded like an oddly poignant evocation of pre-millennial tension. Two decades later it stands as an eerily prescient glimpe into the technological alienation and dislocation of of a new era. Yet more importantly, OK Computer is no more or less than a sparkling, dramatic and moving collection of songs that haven't lost any of their impact in the interim. The sound of a band stubbornly refusing to follow up the stadium-strafing stylings of its predecessor The Bends - and instead bursting headlong into experimentation and wild creativity -is portrayed in still more vivid colours by the alarmingly strong collection of out-takes and B-sides collected herein, Yet there's no getting away from the chill and spark that marked out OK Computer from everything surrounding it in the post-Britpop malaise, and continues to do so in the pre-Brexit counterpart.

  1. Kettle America (7:18)
  2. I Knead You (5:47)
  3. Without Rob (5:46)
Review: Razor 'N' Tape's two previous servings of Dimitri From Brooklyn edits (and, yes, they're the work of legendary DJ/producer Dimitri From Paris) were both must-haves, so hopes are naturally high for this third volume. Predictably, the disco-loving Frenchman is on fine form once more, laying down a trio of interpretations that breathe new life into classic jams. While the A-side "Kettle America" (say it phonetically) is something of a cheeky treat - impressively chopping between hard-wired guitar riffs and the original track's bustling disco groove - it's "I Knead You", an end-of-night, lights-up version of a Sylvester cut that smartly emphasizes the song's gospel origins, that really sparkles. "Without Rob", a harmonica-heavy rearrangement of a well-known favourite, completes another essential package.

Review: The late Jorge Reyes was a leading figure in Mexican experimental music, and this album recorded with Antonio Zepeda is one of his earliest and most striking works. Originally released in 1986, A La Izquierda Del Colibri is a worldly product of the era in the same way as the work of Jah Wobble and Brian Eno, rich in new wave funk but reaching to a higher plane thanks to all manner of sonic devices. From treated jungle sounds to swooping pads, the whole album feels like an exotic trek through the heat and mystery of Central America, at times leaving the Western world far behind and at other times embracing it. A captivating listen.

Review: Having been a staple in the Parisian scene for over two decades, Deeply Rooted boss DJ Deep returns to Matt Edward's Rekids with four tough productions here. "La Grande Brasserie" features rolling kicks and a subtle rhythm, as futuristic stabs ebb in and out of the mix, while the '2e Service' version (whilst sharing a similar aesthetic) sounds bigger with its echoing synths and infectious claps. On the flip, both tracks are more dark and mellow in comparison; "Paris Heartbeat" showcasing twisted atmospherics and gloomy elements, whilst the intricate and mesmerising 'Chord Kids' is exemplary of DJ Deep's ability to craft imaginative left-of-centre cuts.

Review: Kon and Reflex combine for a cheeky 12" dedication to Michael Jackson for the fourth release on the Boston selector's increasingly on point Star Time label. Edit heaven or what? Reflex calls shotgun and reworks "PYT", amping up the vibe with much crisper drums and a whole lot more space present on that classic chorus drop. Meanwhile on the flip King Of Nothing takes "Get On The Floor" and gives it a modern day party refix complete with full-bodied dynamics, juicy slap bass and very cheeky disco bubbles in the background. Two more essential Michael Jackson edits to add to your collection.

  4. Ortus (6:06)
Review: For their next release, Berlin institution Watergate welcomes back two of Hamburg's finest: Adana Twins. Last seen on the label's last compilation, the duo returns with a bunch of stunners which the label itself best describes as 'low slung, infectious cuts blurring the lines between house and techno' and truly showcase the signature sounds of these Harbour City heroes. The original version of "Flower Of Cane" sees the duo follow their darkest route into the abyss yet with this dark, druggy and heaving man room groove that follows in the tradition of classic Ruede Hagelstein or even local legends like Stephan Bodzin. "Ortus" is an adrenalised exercise in mood lighting; which is perfect to make a transition with its elevating EBM style bassline. The third offering "Relentless" (feat Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish electro-poppers Whomadewho) offers yet more quality but if you ask us: it's all about Andre Lodemann's vocal mix, which is so incredibly dreamy and evocative as always.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: After a 10 year hiatus, Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic label returns under a new guise: Mosaic Split Series. This series will be split between old school artists from Mosaic and beyond and artists from the new school. This first release sees Mosaic legend Jorge Zamacona don his Urban Sombrero for the latest installment in his "mosaic efforts" series. A deep, trippy, dirty house workout in Jorge's unique style. In keeping with the whole ethos of this project we have newcomer Ben Buitendijk's offering , "Promised Land," on the flip. An ultra-deep dub house/techno track that echoes the Mosaic sound of old with a modern twist. Melodic and atmospheric, this one deserves to be played from beginning to end.

Review: Second time around for Peven Everett's "Put Your Back Into It", which has become an in-demand record since it first hit stores 10 years ago. This official reissue replicates the track listing of the original pressing. Everett's original version is an undulating, soft-spun deep house delight, with the producer adding his own superb, soul-soaked versions to a backing track rich in shuffling, floor-friendly drums, warm bass and jazzy keys. On the flipside, remixer Quentin Harris gives the track a little more bass-heavy bump, employing slightly heavier drums and some rich chords, whist making more of Everett's impeccable Fender Rhodes work.

Review: Here's another dose of attractive anonymity from Rora sub-label ODE, an imprint that has failed to disappoint since popping up back in 2013. As usual, information is thin on the ground, and there are no track titles. What's on offer, though, is predictably solid. The party-focused A-side provides a speeded-up, tooled up interpretation of a toasty, breakbeat-fuelled 1991 dancefloor classic (one previously reissued a decade ago, with accompanying remixes, by Hi-Phen). Slightly more revolutionary is the rolling B-side, which makes merry with bouncy beats, squelchy electronics, and a handful of synth and vocal samples from a well-known Prince record.

Review: Having originally surfaced on DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted House label back in 2011, the appropriately named Bleak brings his stern Ekko track back into focus on his own Naura label, inviting two titans of contemporary techno to do the remix business on the track. First up is Skudge, who get things marching at an urgent pace with their usual knack for ear snagging sonic hooks and unrelenting kick drums. Meanwhile Markus Suckut makes a more weighty interpretation of the track, slowing the tempo and adding all kinds of sub pressure to make for a truly killer workout. As a bonus, the original track is present on the B-side in all its mean-tempered glory.

Review: Following fine outings from Gazatech and Youngg P, Moscow-based Private Persons has turned to long-established producer Florian Kupfer for release number three. He kicks things off with "Post Present", a pleasingly lo-fi, analogue-sounding chunk of deep house that wraps reverb-laden vocal samples and fluttering synthesizer motifs around a tactile, old school house groove. While sturdy enough to sound good booming out of big sound systems, much of the track's power is derived from the drifting waviness of its sparse samples and melodies. Flip to the B-side for the driving but distorted drums and spacey chords of "Can't Love Life Without U", and the slowly shifting, Pete Namlook style ambient of "Lubov".

"Ecology" is a sweet, rolling soul slice with glistening guitars and a velvet almost Sun-Ra style jazz aesthetic. "Anubis" is more of a driving, evocative Troubleman-style groove with vocals that build and gather momentum around each other with an almost gospel-like sensation. Powerful... Review: REPRESS ALERT: Fresh from 1986 - and recently re-edited by John Talabot - documents do not get any more Balearic than this.... Spanish trio Ishinohana's debut album is rich in cosmic attitude. At points daydreaming while the sand laps at its toes (the lilting nylon strings and soft padded hand drums of "Lucia", the overlapping guitars and galloping refrains of "La Flor De Piedra"), at others a much darker, more spacious star-gazing affair (the Arabic dreams of "El Beso Negro") and at others a heavier rhythmic, floor-minded approach (the lolloping bass and reggae-wise strums of "Variacion 23") this is a timeless document that befits situations and sceneries that existed long before this record was conjured up... And will remain so for generations after. Stunning.

Kon plays the lavish extension card, adding extra emphasis on the instrumentation while The Reflex goes for a warmer finish, squaring his focus on the juicy bassline while adding a little cymbal magic to the rhythm. Both authentic and hugely respectful to the original, this is effectively an edit masterclass that we all need to pay attention to.

Review: Mystery label Digwah debuted in the summer, with a soul soaked trip into minimal techno territory that was supported by Ricardo Villalobos, amongst others. Like that 12", Something Else is a single-sided, hand-stamped affair, with no information given about the identity of the producer (or producers) involved. This cut retains the late night techno vibe of the original, but with percussion and whizzing electronic noises that recall classic tech-house from the likes of Swag, Rob Mello and David Duriez, rather than Berghain-friendly minimalism. The subtle, party-minded approach is confirmed by the use of cut-up vocal samples from Cuba Gooding Jr's "Happiness Is Just Around The Bend", which also featured on Nightmares On Wax's 1990 bleep techno anthem, "Aftermath".

Review: Following a near two-year hiatus, Delta Funktionen resurfaces in order to invite us on his Junior High School Excursion To The Parallel World. While the title evokes images of bad 1980s teen movies, musically the Dutch producer has delivered a double-pack full of what we would describe as "proper" techno and electro. That means thrusting rhythms, bold and restless basslines, intergalactic electronics and melodies that sound like they've been beamed down from, well, a parallel world. There's naturally plenty of subtle variation - compare and contrast, for example, the booming rhythmic intensity and creepy melodies of "Torpedo" and the winding late night acid trip that is "Stingoperation" - but Delta Funktionen keeps his eyes firmly fixed on the dancefloor throughout.

"Apocalypse" in particular is a stunning piece of tom-powered menace, but it's quickly offset by the bubbling cosmic delights of "Electronix". "Firedance" on the B-side channels some righteous 80s industrial and synth pop tropes to create it's own kind of drama, and then "Stardriver" finishes the EP off with some pulsing, noirish wave synths and gaseous atmospherics. With the styles shifting from track to track, Jonny 5 has once again done a sterling job of keeping his options open and keeping us locked expectantly into his delirious sound.

On the A-side you'll find "Tornado", a no-nonsense techno excursion featuring dense, whirlwind beats, glacial electronic melodies and psychedelic synthesizer motifs. Despite the heaviness of its groove, it's a pleasingly tuneful and mood-enhancing affair. On Side B he doffs a cap to early British "intelligent techno" pioneers via the swinging electro breakbeats and Boards of Canada melodies of "Glacier", before returning to heavy, locked-in techno pastures on the funk-fuelled late night roller "Voyager". Rock solid fare, as usual.

Review: Emotional Rescue's love affair with Dancefloor Records continues apace as they turn their attention to the staggeringly futuristic freestyle of Shavonne. Like much dance music of the era, Shavonne was something of a shortlived talent, but the production on "So, Tell Me, Tell Me" is next level for the original release date of 1989. On the "Clubhouse Mix" there are all kinds of classic rave samples knocking about in the mix while the "Trance Mix" pares things down to a sensual core, but it's in fact the bombast of the original "Vocal Mix" that really catches the ear. With it's pitched up vocals and nimble 808 beat programming it could easily align with Rustie and the like.

  1. Sullric (10:05)
  2. Sullric (Deeper dub) (12:09)
Review: In what is surely an unexpected collaboration in the field of house and techno, Mosaic mastermind Steve O'Sullivan teams up with Ricardo Villalobos for a hypnotic trip through minimal landscapes that plays to both of their strengths. The rock-solid rhythm of "Sullric" surely belongs to O'Sullivan while the rich, subtle layers of samples, tones and other such sonic decorations come straight from the Villalobos school of production. The two mixes on this 12" only have minor differences - whichever side you drop things will get considerably deeper than they were previously. Of such ingredients are classy, immersive techno joints made.

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Review: One half of the Canyons, Leo James first presented his solo artistry in 2015 on his own Body Language. 18 months and four EPs deep, his landscapes are becoming more and more vivid and alluring, notably now on the ever-innovative Berceuse Heroique. Unhurried and gossamer in its synthetic sheen, there's a strong sense of science and futurism coded into these wonderfully extensive narratives as the ominous plod and clipped riff uplift of "The Surface", the oceanic epicity of "The Centre Of Time" and the playful thrust of the title track fuse to form almost 40 minutes of immersive electronic soul.

Review: Deep house explorer Jay Ka has already scored releases on Phonogramme, Saft and other labels, but now he reaches even further with a turn on Spain's finest, Minuendo Recordings. It's just the right kind of smooth, undulating dance music that can slip into all manner of situations from the beach bar to the after party. "They Like To Do" is a wonderfully meditative jam laced with vocal licks and hazy chords, but even when things get spicier on "Unknown Uniform" the brittle drums and acid lines seem to blur into a woozy reverie that matches the rest of the EP. Watch out for Dubbyman's remix of "Untitled", which feeds some irresistible rolling drums and piano chords into the mix.

Review: As Silent Servant slowly winds down his respected Jealous God imprint, we have been treated to some bold releases by the likes of Crimes Of The Future main man Black Merlin, Aufnahme + Wiedergabe's Phase Fatale and the legendary Oliver Ho as Broken English Club. Here, the Northern Electronics and Posh Isolation affiliated Jonas Ronnberg aka Varg appears now: unpredictable as ever but always delivering the goods in fine fashion. The A side's highlight is the pummelling full throttle industrial techno onslaught that is "Skrrt (Music Made To Listen To In A RS6)" that will truly throw you into a corner. On the flip, the absolutely roaring hypnotic techno epic entitled "Last Dance (I'll Hold You Till We Die)" features the most tripped out modular sounds this side of Mike Parker, plus its overall production is reminiscent of the seminal, trance inducing sounds of the Italian Zooloft imprint: but with the worthy addition of some harsh snares: pretty damn brilliant if we do say so ourselves!

Review: Freaks man Luke Solomon was still in the early stages of his career when he donned the Jean Caffeine alias and released Downtime, Turn Around & Go Backwards. Here, the 1998 EP is given the re-release treatment on reissue imprint Mint Condition. It remains one of Solomon's deeper and more considered collections of tracks. The title track, here featured in freshly re-mastered form, is a tech-tinged deep house treat, with rich chords and tumbling melody lines stretching out across a smooth, bass-heavy groove. "Jean's Train of Thought" peppers a swinging, Chicago-influenced groove with punchy synth horns and Sheffield style bleep melodies, while "Jean's Afterthought" is a deep and dreamy shuffler.

Review: Brothers Fabio and Marco D'Arcangelo can trace their roots back to Rome's industrial techno revolution of the early 1990s, but are arguably best known for their frequent outings on Rephlex. This EP originally came out on Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's imprint way back in 1996, when they were still beginning their musical journey. It remains a blisteringly good six-tracker, with highlights including the raw, Aphex Twin-influenced "Somewhere in Time", the guttural, fuzz-drenched post-electro rhythms and Kraftwerk bleeps of "Diagram VII (Milk Mix)", and the pleasingly skuzzy industrial hip-hop of "Skrakt". Arguably best of all, though, is the shimmering "80s Mix" of "Diagram 7", which recasts the track as a melodic chunk of funk-fuelled electro.

  4. Andromeda (feat Zanias) (8:09)
Review: Not to get all hyped-out, but it appears that Candela Rising is quietly racing up quite a stellar catalogue. Just to name drop a few peeps, they've put out an impressive run of techno bullets from the likes of Lakker, Eomac, Manni Dee, and now the mighty Ancient Methods, among others. Sometimes you just gotta tip your hat off! Michael Wollenhaupt is now manning the iconic techno project on his own, but if this new EP is anything to go by then it sounds like he's got it under control. From "Swallow The Screw" all the way to "Andromeda", which features the fledgling Zanias, this is high-tech rave gear with a noticeable industrial edge. In fact, the 4/4 elements almost go unnoticed amid the ocean of distortions and screeching power electronics. Of course, you'd still wanna bang this out at 4am on a dancefloor, but it's the sort of techno that the noise heads will find undoubtedly rewarding.

Review: Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has been on our map since the late 00s, but it was his recent two-tracker for the excellent Type label which really cemented his strain of electronica into the back of our minds; an even more recent EP for Latency sealed the deal thanks to a magnificently percussive swarm of outsider electronics. More Than Human feels like precisely the sort of imprint that he should be landing on, especially if it's with an album like the present Two Orb Reel. Across 14 tracks, Lowe unleashes a controlled whirlpool of sonics, masterfully coaxed into a muddy, swamped sort of amalgam that explores the uncharted frontiers of ambient and beyond. Tunes like "Interzone Bureau Desk" provide movement amid the loose atmospherics, and others like "Telassar" offer a more tribal perspective to the equation. This is a fine LP, and one which will endlessly please those looking for something deep and mystical. 10/10.
