  1. Voyant Inc - "Lost In Time" (10:35)
  2. Tofu Productions - "The Warmth" (10:37)
Review: The undisputed dons of minimal house team up here on Thomas Melchior's Aspect Music, for a very special release. Label boss Melchior's basic trance induction is complimented by Japanese maestro Fumiya Tanaka's reductionist mini funk on "Lost In Time". If that was not enough, they are joined by the man that started the whole style: Detroit innovator Daniel Bell. The Accelerate head honcho venturing into the studio for the first time in many years, which makes this that bit more extraordinary. On the flip, Melchior and Tanaka carry on the show (As Tofu Productions) with the darkly hypnotic loops of "The Warmth" which is perfect for Sunday morning weirdness at Club Der Visionaere.

Engineered for scratch DJ's and turntablists, the M44-7 is designed not to skip under even the most demanding circumstances.

The only difference between the two models is that the M44-7-H comes pre-mounted on a Technics headshell virtually eliminating set up time. Both models include one stylus and an accessory kit that features a headshell screwdriver, stylus cleaning brush and headshell weight.

Review: It would be fair to say that Roy Davis Jr and Peven Everett's "Gabriel" (originally written "Gabrielle" on early pressings) has become a timeless dance music classic - a track that both soulful house and UK garage DJs reach for in times of trouble. Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". It does, of course, contain the now ubiquitous "Live Garage" version - the groovy two-step, trumpet-laden mix that became popular with early UK garage DJs - plus a trio of lesser-known remixes. The Tambourine Dub, in particular, is something of a tough, warehouse-friendly deep house treat.

Review: It's 25 years since the release of Main Source's Breaking Atoms album, one of the finest full-lengths of hip-hop's renowned "golden era". To celebrate this fact, Geordie producer Smoove has put together "Main Sourced", a two-part cut-and-paste tribute that incorporates elements from tracks sampled by the group across the celebrated set, alongside carefully selected rap samples. As you'd expect from a man of his talents and experience, it's brilliantly done, achieving a near perfect balance between the needs of the dancefloor, the dustiness of the original album, and the demands of Steinski style cut-and-paste productions. In other words, it's pretty darn good.

Review: Four years after the beginning of Heist Recordings, label heads Detroit Swindle deliver their fourth solo record for the label. On the Can't Hold It EP, they showcase their love for lush disco, analogue basslines and leftfield musicians. On the A side, the title track is a serving of funky disco loops that you've come to expect from the Dutch duo, while "Just Not Norma" features New Zealand nu-jazz hero Mark De Clive-Lowe: who adds some wicked P-funk vibes to this deep and dusty deep house excursion. On the flip, "Tamarindus Hollandicus" is the most energetic offering from the pair here, with its bouncy bass, neon-lit synths and tight rhythm patterns taking you into the stratosphere. But the remix up next; where they bring in NYC native Willie Burns is a remix that shows you their darkest side yet.

Review: A new Vatican Shadow release is always greeted with near adoration here at Juno Towers. Dominick Fernow's shadiest guise is still his best work, and this is especially true when his has 2 slabs of vinyl with which to express his ideas. As you can imagine, Luxor Necropolitics is a lingering, tenebrous cloud of industrial electronics and contained power noise. The moments that do transform into techno are still made up of the same rough materials that characterise all Vatican Shadow track, and that is a pale, unforgiving glow of sounds that never seem to get repetitive. Class.

Heading due south from NYC to New Jersey, we're presented with an absolute pearl from Kerri Chandler's extensive collection: "My Old Friend". Timeless chords set the scene with soulful stateliness while Kerri's classic strut maintains all the energy after 18 years. "We Can" and its reprise continue Chandler's soulful thrust with more focus on those classic Jersey organs. Flash Forward aren't messing around with these represses.

Review: Aus alumni Rob Glassett brings his Fold feels to Shall Not Fade: four tracks of jazz-tinged classically trained house music that nods heavily towards the Chicago sound. "Alan Whickers" pumps with a big filtered sensation that doubles up into quite a punch on the second drop, "Knickerbocker Ave" is as tasty as it sounds with a light broken feel to the drums and delicate jazz piano loop while "Doin' Bits" is grounded in more of a NYC house feel with its insistent vocal sample rises and relentless groove. Need a little 23rd century soul? Look no further than Will & Ink's Frits Wentink remix. Vibes.

Review: Not long after laying down some serious jazzy tones from Hanna, Perpetual Rhythms stays true to its cause by delivering this debut release from the equally appropriately named Mystical Institute. There's very little in the way of information out there about this new operator, but based on the quality of the music contained within the Shared Growth EP we should be hearing plenty more from them in the future. "Sea Believer" is a lilting dubby house number which undulates into the skippy seduction of "Night Rhythms". On the B side "Minds Rising" takes a meditative approach into subtle, snaking patterns of percussion and melody, and "Shared Growth" brings a more urgent energy without losing that spooky atmosphere that lingers throughout this record.

Review: It's a good time to be an Artificial Intelligence fan. Hot on the heels of their "Reprisal" EP on Headz they return to their Integral mothership for four more understated slices of golden drum & bass. "Ask Yourself" teases with shades of cut up vocal soul over a heavily textured groove and loose percussive elements while "True Colours" goes all-out dreamy with a string hook and vocal to die for. Deeper into the EP we chow for the barbed banquet of futurist soul that is "Waiting For" followed by the soothing stepper palette of "Holding Out". Truth.

Review: Mike Dunn returns on top form with "DJ Beat That Shhh", a fine slab of warm and rich, '90s style Chicago deep house. While that track is inspired - Dunn rarely puts a foot wrong, production wise - we actually prefer flipside hip-house jack-track "Move It, Work It". It's raw and stripped back in typical Illinois fashion, with the action focused around crunchy drum machine percussion, occasional ghostly chords and a killer TB-303 bassline. The vocal mix comes on like a long-lost hip-house collaboration between Fast Eddie and Phuture, while the Dub strips things back further for greater dancefloor pleasure.

Review: Vincetiulian (AKA producer Chrirches Vincentiu Lulian) has quickly become one of the leading lights in the rapidly expanding Romanian minimal house scene. Here he returns to action following a six-month sabbatical via a rock-solid three-tracker on Liniar. His ability to neatly sidestep Romanian tech-house cliches is much in evidence on A-side "Melorhythm", where poignant and melancholic flashes of melody weave in and out of a metallic, broken house groove. While the sound palette is reminiscent of his previous productions, it's the brilliantly off-kilter nature of the rhythm that's tickled our fancy. On the flip you'll find the meticulously programmed tech-house box jam that is "Synchronized" (which features some brilliantly perky Clavinet flashes) and the undulating deepness of "Fedrova".

Review: Animals On Psychedelics snaps up a debut appearance from Miro Sundaymusiq for its second release, delving further into the label's mission statement of "the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music." Miro opens up proceedings with "This Is Not Butter Carolin", a twinkling roller with subtle disco undertones and a cheeky nod to electro rubbed into the rhythm. So far, so psychedelic. "Creamy Dreams" is no slouch in the cosmic department either, loaded with bubbling arpeggios aimed skywards and using a sprightly set of drums to help the mellifluous tones along.

Funk
  1. Silver Satin (5:22)
  2. Runaway Love (4:58)
Review: Outside of record collecting circles, few have heard of Axis's 1984 cut "Silver Satin" - though given that it was only ever released as a private press single (some 200 or so copies were apparently pressed), that's hardly surprising. Here, new record label Ice City gives it the reissue treatment. The track is a brilliantly spacey chunk of slap-bass propelled, P-funk era boogie full of eyes closed guitar solos, impassioned vocals and swirling synthesizer chords. On the flipside you'll find a previously unreleased track, "Runaway Love", which was written, produced and performed by main main Byron Bordeaux in 1986. Closer to '80s soul but with guitars and bass reminiscent of electrofunk-era jazz-funk jams, it's almost better than the A-side, and that's saying something. In other words, this is an essential reissue.

Review: Italian newcomer Olo is officially our new source of the best and classiest minimal on the scene. Since the genre's golden years, back in the late noughties, only a few peeps like Villalobos have managed to construct sparse micro house that actually sounds good, but this material from Olo has made us reconsider our opinions. These three sleek and ultra effective tools are deconstructed just enough to so as to still feel groovy and neatly dubbed-out. Bass lines aren't compromised in favour of superfluous FX frivolties and there is pleanty of movement in here for all kinds of dance tunes to be mixed in alongside them. More Olo, please.

While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Their genius likes in his ability to source and utilize stems and master tapes, allowing him to remix and re-edit killer disco jams in the same manner as original masters such as Tom Moulton. It means that he can craft new instrumental breakdowns, stretch out portions that were originally overlooked, and generally breathe new life into otherwise all-too-familiar anthems. The two revisions featured here are typically impressing, with the impassioned, driving, heavily rearranged Philadelphia Soul flipside ("BD LCK") just nudging out anthem like A-side "Ansun" (a brilliantly teased-out version of one of the most familiar disco records of all time).

When two creative minds join and bring a modern take on disco, this is the result. Kitty Katt & Twisted Soul Collective 'have aligned forces to bring you an array of ideas, thoughts, sounds and feelings.' Definitely for the disco dancers, you can visualise grooving to this number under a mirror ball. "Twisted Katt" on the A side brings the funk, complete with liquid bassline and breakbeats (hear the drummer get wicked) assisted by a tough four the floor beat for dancefloor dynamics. On the flip is "Cosmic Bitch" with its Salsoul Orchestra style strings section looped up to perfection, over another reliable house rhythm and some nice filter sweeps.

  1. Brujo Magic (unreleased edit)
  2. Ananta Snake Dance (long version)
Review: REPRESS ALERT! Spearheaded by Stuart Leath, Emotional Rescue is a label committed to unearthing forgotten gems and giving them the exposure they richly deserve, with all releases officially licensed by the artist and remastered in full. This 12" sees two classic tracks by the world music collective Suns of Arqa take pride of place. Incorporating elements of raga and dub, "Brujo Magic" is a much more straightforward dancefloor number than its description would suggest, with its rolling bassline and vocoder effects fusing irresistibly with its psyche-rock styles. On the B-Side, "Ananta Snake Dance" combines traditional Indian percussion and harmonium with conventional drumming to create something completely unique. A strong start to what will no doubt be an indispensable label.

  4. The Session
Review: Belgian producer Krewcial is one of those producers who flits in and out of activity, and has done so since the mid 90s. Lumberjacks In Hell have called upon this slippery character to lay down some righteous grooves for their latest missive, and the results are sublime. "2U" is funky house how it should be done, all stomping drums, dreamy pads and soulful licks for the party people in the place. "Heal" takes a more edited approach, holding back the bass for the ultimate dancefloor payoff. "Hit Me Off" ramps up the jazzy keys for a Detroit flavoured looped up throwdown, and then "The Session" fires off one last sumptuous rip through peak time perfection.

  17. Know Your Name (feat Seinabo Sey)
Review: Chase & Status are easily among that small band of drum & bass artists who transcend the genre. It's for this reason that the release of this fourth album - their first since 2013 - is big news not just within the D&B community, but the wider dance music scene, too. So is it any good? In short: yes. While it may not tickle the fancy of some underground junglists, few acts are quite as good at creating the kind of energetic, hot-stepping D&B and bass music anthems that sound just as good blasting out from car radios as they do over club soundsystems. With an impressive cast-list of guest stars - Emile Sande, Kano, Craig David, Novelist and Shy FX included - lending a hand, Tribe could easily end up being the crossover dance album of the year.

Review: Dortmund producer Mr Fries was signed to Wolf Music after handing over a CD of demos at a gig. He subsequently made his first appearance on the established deep house label in February 2016. This belated follow-up is packed full of hazy, club-ready treats, from the sample-heavy deep house jazziness of "Justafan" and Moonrise Hill Material style dancefloor warmth of "Anotherbeer", to the jazz-funk influenced slickness of "Indarkdayz (feat Pete De Haan)", where snaking saxophone solos wrap themselves around a wonderfully tactile groove. Throw in a couple of head-nodding interludes (one of which is also turned into a chunk of glitchy deep house by Lab AKA Labat), and you have another essential EP from the talented German youngster.

Review: Having made his debut on Kompakt with "Out Of Time" earlier this year, the legendary Sasha now breaks the seal on another prominent German label: Watergate. Flexing his darker technoid muscles, both "Gameovr" and "Trigonometry" are proud late night stampers that twist, weave, spell-bind and hammer in equal measures. The latter is exceptionally spellbinding thanks to its epic 10+ minute weave. Remix-wise we're spoilt rotten as Cassy punctuates "Gameovr" with pile-driving beats and La Fleur refixes our focus on a warmer, housier side to "Trigonometry". Play again?

Review: Given her rising reputation in recent years, it's something of a surprise to find that Rembo is Karen Gwyer's first full-length excursion since 2013's Kiki The Wormhole on Opal Tapes. While that latter set was impressive, Rembi is arguably even better. For starters, Gwyer refuses to settle on one groove, following a glistening ambient opener with a fuzzy, IDM-influenced chunk of left-of-centre dancefloor techno, which in turn makes way for a beat-less slab of hazy synthesizer positivity. It's a pattern that continues throughout, as the talent American producer delivers bustling, redlined techno jams laden with dirt-encrusted synthesizer motifs, spacey IDM club tracks and picturesque electronic soundscapes that sidestep easy categorization.

  1. Kool & The Gang - "Give It Up" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (4:02)
  2. Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady" (DJ Soopasoul edit) (3:29)
Review: Jalepeno Records regular DJ Soopasoul launched his amusingly titled Soopastole Edits series at the tail end of 2016, serving up a tasty seven-inch single that boasted rock solid re-rubs of a couple of party-starting classics. He's at it again on this follow-up. On the A-side, he takes his rusty scalpel to Kool & The Gang's meandering, 1970 instrumental cut "Give It Up", emphasizing the original's killer break and snaking saxophone lines. On the flip he takes a similar approach to reworking Aretha Franklin's peerless "Rock Steady", subtly tightening up the groove whilst emphasizing the bumping nature of the original beats.

Review: Tenderlonious and Dennis Ayler first joined forces in the studio last year, with the first fruits of their combined labours (a fine cut called "Put it On") appearing on Ayler's first 7" single for 22a. They clearly enjoyed working together, because they've now laid down an entire album of collaborative efforts. Heavily rooted in jazz, broken beat and vintage Herbie Hancock material, the album's genius lies in its energetic fluidity, thrilling percussive looseness and the duo's refreshing "anything goes" approach. Listing all of the sounds and styles represented would take forever, but suffice to say it's one of the most vibrant, colourful and hard-to-pigeonhole sets we've heard for a while.
