Review: During the late 1990s, Japanese producer Yuji Takanouchi produced a trio of sublime EPs, most of which went largely overlooked at the time. He surprisingly returned to action a few years ago with a handful of similarly dreamy, loved-up productions, prompting R&S offshoot Apollo Records - who famously released his peerless ambient house 12", Southern Paradise, in 1997 - to put together this superb compilation. The genius of his productions, whether dancefloor leaning or more horizontal in ethos, always lay in the hazy colourfulness of his synthesizer melodies and life-affirming chord progressions. It's those traits, coupled with his firm grasp of deep house and intelligent techno aesthetics, which shine through on Brand New Day. "Pacific Jazz", "Nite" and "Ocean In Heaven", in particular, are stunning.

Review: Nail's 89:Ghost label continues apace with this new wedge of goodness from Logic Systems. The self-titled EP is the first we've heard of this particular producer, although it could just as easily be an alias for the boss himself. Whoever is behind the music, they should be thoroughly pleased with themselves. The quality and imagination that has been poured into these tracks is evident from the off - "Ariel" shimmers with its plush layers of synths and understated beat, while "S.C.A.M.P" gets some even more startling keys in the mix. The story is the same across the flipside, weaving a masterful tale that adds perfectly to the 89:Ghost canon.

  4. Testify (6:57)
Review: Paris native Mancini is one of those artists who dips and dives in and out the shadows as he pleases. Since his first EP surfaced way, way back in 1996, the producer has delivered sporadic EPs here and there, offering some serious killers before returning to the shadows once again. He's been a little more consistent as of late, with his previous release having come out last year, and it feels like he may be gaining a little traction through his self-titled Mancini imprint. "Cascais", the title tune on here, showcases a masterfully subtle and alluring shade of deep house that steers ever so closely to the Villalobos strain of minimal, with the same going for the comparatively more lively and percussion-driven swings of "Sh My Ass". Over on the B-side, "No Nothing" slithers its way through a medley of swinging, glitchy drums, dubby bass tones, and masterful vocal samples, while "Testify" is the one tune to bring the groove out to major dance levels, leaving its siblings back in the shade. Top notch deepness.

Cruising the Central Line in an inimitable loose, swinging way, there's magic to be found between the synth melody and juicy slapbass. Complete with a floor-focussed dub, this will have everyone dancing, guaranteed.

Review: Travelling both space and time with his constructions, Alphonse Rozel makes a welcome return on [Emotional] Especial after the Same For Me EP released last year. The incisive hit of the disco beat on "Smokey" is hard to ignore, while the booming toms and African chant lines feed into a perfect slice of dancefloor dynamite from an unspecified era. Meanwhile The Pilotwings take to the track with glee, whipping out some crisp breaks to drop over the proceedings in a pleasingly early '90s manner. "Glint AM" is quite the foil to the A side, leaning on some uplifting synth chords to provide the magic around the crafty drum programming.

Review: Bass-obsessed cockney studio don East End Dubs has been pleasingly prolific of late. This two-tracker, which follows hot on the heels of the slamming ENDZ012 EP, should excite both East End boys and West End girls. A-side "Arcane" is predictably driven forwards by bumpy, garage-influenced dubs and a wonderfully fluid sub-bass line, though it's the fluttering, near ambient chords and intergalactic electronics that naturally catch the ear. Flipside "Step 414" is an altogether deeper affair, with delay-laden bleeps and ricocheting percussion hits clustering around another speaker-shaking bassline and crispy rhythm track. It sounds like the sort of record that would sound great in a very dark warehouse at six in the morning.

Review: There's deep, and then there's the work of Bastian "Baaz" Volker. The German producer's work is rarely less than ultra-deep, and this return to Slices of Life - a label he last blessed four years ago - is predictably hazy and hypnotic. Title track "The Reason" is typical of his style, with becalmed, head-in-the-clouds chords and chopped-up vocal samples reclining over a crispy tech-house groove. Flipside "Ancestors Groove" is a little livelier, both rhythmically and structurally, with chiming blasts of melody and suitably soulful vocal samples riding a backing track rich in bustling bass, bumping beats and drowsy pads.

Review: For their latest trip into saucer-eyed deep house territory, San Francisco's Spring Theory crew has wisely recruited fast-rising Canadian producer Project Pablo. The Montreal man predictably delivers a four-track EP of rich, musically evocative cuts that seem tailor made for chilly summer sunrises and hazy, drawn-out sunsets. Check, for example, the bouncy, delay-laden positivity of dub house shuffler "Forgetful House", the restless drum machine hits and trippy electronics of "Smudge", and the baggy positivity of opener "Morning Shift", whose toasty Rhodes chords and undulating synthesizer lines are accompanied by some wonderfully loose and live sounding drums.

Review: Mystic Bill's heritage reaches right back to the legendary Trax Records, stopping off at veritable institutions such as Classic, Relief and Snuff Trax on the way through to the present day. Still the man known as William Torres to his mother is ploughing on with a new swathe of productions that retain the roughshod flair of his early work, making for a natural fit on Crimes Of The Future. There's a feisty, freaky spirit coursing through the veins of "Frequency 9", while "The Ship Is Sinking" is equally unhinged in its disposition. Throw in a remix by Scott Fraser for good measure and you've got yourself a winner.

Review: The latest offering on Owen Jay's Batti Batti label features a cast of characters doing different but equally excellent things within the realm of deep house. Acasual is up first, presenting a reflective tour through lingering chords and swirling pads perfect for rainy spring days, while Tominori Hosoya goes one further with the soul-stirring ambience of "Thinking Of The Days". Kiddmisha & Apoena set light to the B-side with the restrained but utterly on-point depth charge "Dancin", and then Jonno & Tommo round the record out with the sultry "Mystic Feelings", making this a complete package of high grade house music from the heart.

Review: There's more dewy-eyed, loved-up re-edit action to be found on this second salve from the mysterious Love Creation crew. Opener "Turn My Back On You" is a sultry, late night delight; an impressively seductive rearrangement of a slow burning, Sade style shuffler full of lazy guitar lines, rising and falling bass, and crotch-stirring vocals. Stay tuned to side A for the psychedelic disco-rock trip that is "Mr Bates" - and, yes, it's definitely Balearic - or flip to the B for the freshly baked soul shuffle of "Take Me With You". All three edits are undoubtedly winners, and should suit warm up sets, afternoon jams, and dancers that don't need a hectic tempo to get down.

Review: Little is known about Friction Band's hyper-rare 45" besides the fact it's a brilliant example of outsider, slightly experimental style of modern soul, it's passed hands for strong triple figures in recent years and it's just been injected with a whole new lease of life by Fryer. "Watchin' You" is a footloose boogie jam with unabashed use of freeform keys while "To The Sky" flips for a softer, more sentimental soul affair that's fringed by just the right amount of dreamy cosmicity. Another precision find by AOTN.

Review: Given his renowned crate-digging credentials, it's little surprise that Floating Points is a big fan of Open Soul, the 1976 debut album from Chicagoan soul/jazz-funk fusionists Tomorrow's People. The album is notoriously hard to find, with original copies occasionally changing hands online for eye-watering sums of money. The thing is, though, it's a terrific album, as this welcome reissue on the producer's Melodies International imprint proves. Spanning a wide range of soul and jazz-funk styles - from the rubbery, sax-laden disco-funk bump of "Let's Get Down With The Beat" and doo-wop influenced "Hurry Up Tomorrow", via the blistering "Hurt Perversion" - it's an inspired collection that stands up to repeat listens. Epic flipside cut "Open Soul" - a 20-mimute trip into space-soul territory - is especially good.

  2. Night Train To Nowhere (6:09)
Review: Melbournian DJ/producer Bell Towers is one of Public Possession's most prolific artists. This 12" is his seventh for the Munich-based stable in just under four years. It's something of a celebratory, peak-time affair, with A-side "All Aboard" offering a near perfect balance of flanged, ear-catching disco guitars, elastic live bass, DJ-friendly special effects, and a house sensibility. "Night Train To Nowhere" is a more druggy and trippy affair, with Bell Towers channeling the spirit of kraut greats Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream on a cut that sits somewhere between Italo-disco, kosmiche, and quirky, left-of-centre house. In other words, it's another rock solid EP.

Review: On this groovy and entertaining 12", Stassy welcomes sometime Elephant Moon producer Lee Burton to Taverna Tracks for the first time. Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.

Review: After many years as a digital label, Ukranian label Manuscript makes the leap to vinyl with a choice selection of tracks enjoying the reissue treatment. Herbert's "Never Give Up" originally landed in 1997 as one of the peak moments in his purest phase of deep house production, and sounds just as fresh on this new pressing. Meanwhile forgotten jazz house jam "Sometimes I'm Blue" by Nick Holder gets a fresh airing, and deservedly so. This time Windows XP and Relationship Goals take a side each with two equally chunky, warm and relentless workouts. The former gets their sensual swag on with a purring sample and a whirlwind of boompty bomp around it while the latter chugs out with widescreen kicks and a grainier, trippier sample. Review: For all his skills as a DJ - and, let's face it, he pretty much created the Afro-cosmic DJ style all on his own - Daniele Baldelli's productions have not always hit the mark. It's heartening to report, then, that this collaboration with Dario Piana for Leng Records is arguably the best thing he's produced to date. "Infinity Machine", where wild, effects-laden Clavinet lines, jammed-out electric piano chords and meandering synthesizer solos ride a particularly druggy arpeggio bassline, sets the tone magnificently, before the Italian duo jogs towards dub disco territory on the percussion rich "If You Drive". Badlelli's love of spacey synths, crunchy guitars and tactile synth bass comes to the fore on closer "Air Vibes", which also boasts a wonderfully tactile breakdown.

Review: There are few surprises on Luke Hess's latest vinyl outing on Echochord's colour series, just a trio of fluttering, tried-and-tested techno workouts. Opener "Emerald" boasts a typically trippy and hypnotic groove, but also some heart-aching chord progressions and suitably melancholic melody lines. The late night hypnotism is also present on the slightly more boisterous "Lumen", in which the producer fires darting synthesizer lines and cyclical melody loops at a locked-in groove. In a possible bid to impress those who like their techno funkier and more forthright, he reaches for the foreboding acid lines and pounding kick-drums on cymbal-heavy closer "Myriads".

Laying down subtle, soulful sandy-toed gems for the last few years, their sound has that holy grail ability to flex equally into house and balearic quarters. Take stuttering drum boogie joints such as "Far Away Horizons" or the MAW-at-their-chillest "Suspicious Movements" and you're on the floor but take the trippier, slo-mo dreamier cuts like "Exotica Movement" or the juicy-bass chugger "Flames Of Light" and you're flawed. Having already impressed via contributions to Rahaan's Street Edits series, monsieur Gamesbourg is sure to enhance his reputation further with these two reworks. "The Cool, The Hip & The Square" sees him reworking the track that initially inspired the label, extending, chopping and rearranging the killer disco original in all the right places. Arguably even better, though, is the B-side sensuality of "Bring Them Back Together", a glassy-eyed rework of a Philly soul gem that's as sultry as the come.

On the fittingly titled The Sound Of A Feeling EP he serves up the charmingly titled "Shit Wizard" a soulful, nu-disco boogie-down jam. "We Walk To War" in its original form is the kind of lo-slung/slo-mo disco that really floats our boat, but the remix up next by Tee Mango really injects it with some Stevie Wonder style soul-funk that'll help get your shine on. The title track on the flip is the deepest and most emotive offering here, with its sublime and hypnotic qualities being pushed along by a tight groove.

A few years on and Huddersfield's premier house label are revisiting the modern classic with a raft of top shelf remixers on hand. The 1055ml EP is a mixed bag that leads with the title track, which encapsulates everything that's great about the stripped down house sound that Lazare Hoche is committed to. 1. I Know You (7:18)
  2. Tristeza Nao Tem Fim (5:36)
  3. Lost (6:12)
  4. Mama Loves You (6:03)
Review: Having been approved by labels as respected as Underground Quality and Autoreply, Brazilian producer Apoena returns to his Allnite label with yet more of that pure and heartfelt deep house music for those who like it classic and classy. "I Know You" punches and tickles in all the right places with its dreamy keys, soulful vocal lick and rock solid drum lines, while "Tristeza Nao Tem Fim" heads into even more blissed-out territory with its rolling groove and heavy-lidded chords. "Lost" has a solid bottom end thrust that wouldn't sound out of place on a Mike Huckaby record, and "Mama Loves You" brings more of that sweet, laid back, feel good feeling to finish up this impeccable collection of house jams.

Review: Before submerging himself in the world of electronic-acoustic fusion in 1977, Klauss Weiss had been best known as one of Germany's leading jazz drummers. 1978's Time Signals - here reissued on vinyl for the first time since - was not his first attempt to fuse early analogue synthesizers and home-made electronics with his own jazz-leaning drumming, but it probably remains his most successful exploration of this style. It's an album that successfully distils many influences - ambient, krautrock, Tangerine Dream, space rock, the Radiophonic Workshop, and so on - into a wealth of short, library music style tracks that impress with their imaginative approach to musical fusion. Throw in some killer drumming from Weiss - including some turntablist-friendly breaks - and you have an odd but thoroughly entertaining album.

Review: For those of a certain age, the appearance of this surprise new single from micro-house and "digital disco" pioneer Akufen - his first for four years - is likely to spark involuntary weakening of the knees. You see, nobody does glitchy, funky, melodious micro-house quite as well as Marc LeClair, and this four-track missive is up there with his best work. Highlights come thick and fast, from the bustling Isolee-does-two-step bounce of "(This) Make Bagels Not War", and flourishing, jazz-flecked cheeriness of "Death of a Mascot", to the brilliant cut-up beats, manipulated sampled and vocal ticks of closer "Seizure Salad" (a track that proves that he's lost none of his ability to create great dancefloor moments via meticulously edited samples).

Review: London label Spinning Plates steps up for round three with the lesser known talents of Nekhsa throwing down some crucial electro styles. "132 Breaks" is an utterly minimalist slice of drum machine funk, and completely infectious with it, while "Some Jan" works a cheeky bassline rub into the sparse soundscape. "Back In 4" and "BIDNIZ" are both just as reduced in their construction, but then it's up to DJ Spider to weigh in with a pair of remixes that find the New York producer on savage form. His version of "BIDNIZ" is a dense, cloying workout loaded with sinister sound design, while "Some Jan" turns into an apocalyptic techno destroyer in his capable hands.

Review: A seminal 81/83 record that epitomised so many sounds and melting pots: synth wave, Italo, New Romantic, electro, proto house... The list of worlds this groundbreaking song traversed is remarkable. Here Dark Entries compile the four versions that were cut during its two key release phases on GC Recordings in 1981 and 1983 in all their remastered glory. Smouldering, moody and still relevant to so much going on musically, this is true piece of history.

Review: Consistently on-point and expertly dug, Originals continue to join the dots with creativity. Here we rewind to 1973 for Babe Ruth's biggest cut "The Mexican". Its lolloping, rolling bassline and spacious drums have been sampled by many but Organised Konfusion's use is definitely one of the best. Needle down and listen as Prince Po and Pharoahe Monche lay down lucid 1991 flows with a serious political agenda that's still just as resonant today. Timeless on both sides.

Review: Considering this track originally surfaced back in 1993, it's staggering how up to the minute it still sounds, not to mention setting the tone for the swathes of downtempo and broken beat that would flood out from the 90s and beyond into the 21st century. You simply can't measure the influence of "The Nervous Track" with its horn blasts and limber drum roll, and it proves that MAW were never just about tough New York house bump. Take your pick from any of the mixes, they're all classics in their own individual ways, and they'll set any listener adrift on a summery haze of soulful tones and magical drum patterns.

The 12 inch was never commercially released and soon became a sought after item by collectors and DJ's.
Reissued now from US label Nature Sounds it comes compete with an exclusive remix from infamous US DJ/producer Kon on the flipside . Released in partnership with the Bobo family, this official pressing revisits a dancefloor-ready masterpiece and introduces to a new audience who may not be aware of the 1978 original.

Review: Chicago duo Kenny Gino and Mike T aka Solid Gold Playaz have consistently produced material since 1999 on a variety of labels. From Portland's Losonofono, through to Soulfuric Trax and even Berlin techno merchants Kanzleramt and not to mention their own Solid Gold Records. The Minds Beneath Atlantis EP comes courtesy of Jerome Deradji's esteemed Still Music and starts off with the absolutely sexy deepness of "Shhh (Quiet)" (feat DOT) which will appeal to proper deep house nostalgists like us, likewise "U With Me" has that Detroit style that calls to mind other great producers like Big Strick or Andres. On the flip, things take a turn for the more energetic and look more towards the Motor City than their Windy City again on the soulful techno workout "What Lies Beneath"

Review: Wolf Music alumnus Medlar teams up with multi instrumentalist Ishmael here for the inaugural release of West Friends which is brought to you by Peckham record store Rye Wax as their new sublabel. "Bell, Everywhere 1" is deep house that delves into the truly exotic. There's more funky and syncopated rhythms complimented by lush bell tones on "Bell, Everywhere 2" while on the flip, we've go "B2 Or Not B2", a cute drum track featuring an odd selection of hits that somehow work together supported by pawn shop synth bleeps.

Review: During the 1990s, Chez Damier and Ron Trent's Prescription Records did more than any other label to define the sound of Chicago deep house. The label's reputation is such that it's still talked about in hushed tones, with lesser-known back catalogue nuggets remaining in-demand items with DJs and record collectors. This superb, double-disc compilation from Rush Hour tells the story of the label, gathering together both much-played underground anthems (Trent and Damier's "Morning Factory" and "The Choice", the proto-boompty-via-St Germain jazz-house of Angora's "Enchantment", and so on) and sought-after selections. Thrillingly, the collection also boasts a trio of previously unreleased Ron Trent cuts, all of which are superb.

Review: Moonrise Hill Material regular Ethyene is the latest producer to join the Kolour Ltd stable, bringing with him a fine selection of Clubs Dubs & Rubs. The four tracks on offer are effectively high quality club tools for deep house DJs who aren't afraid to drop disco jams in the pursuit of dancefloor magic. Opener "Truth About The Unseen" combines loose, swinging deep house beats with selected passages of a forgotten disco jam, while "Riding In Daddy's Car" adds an extended, filter-heavy breakdown to a similar discoid template. The tempo drops considerably on the groovy, saucer-eyed disco-house chug of "Time Won't Change", while "Strangers Must Be" turns an '80s soul treat into a dreamy deep house shuffler.
