Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
  1. 1960 What? (original)
  2. 1960 What? (Opolopo Kick & Bass rerub)
Review: US newbie Gregory Porter was man of the year as far as nu-soul and funk goes and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson,Patrick Forge & Nik Weston to name but a few. This record had an incredible amount of attention around it even before its release and to be honest, it ain't no surprise! It's just a future classic, end of discussion - it takes Detroit's fine soul and funk heritage onto a new level, showing us that classics are still very much in the making. Porter's own voice is majestic and prophetic as he talks about "Motor City burnin'" and who then goes on to deliver his powerful and emotional words. There's even a slightly "housier" remix by Opolopo, giving us the chance to also enjoy this mighty record at the centre of late-night set...this is certified Theo Parrish material right here!

  1. Give Me Your Love (4:36)

Review: "Give Me Your Love" was produced by Roy Ayers and James "Jaymz" Bedford in 1981, this digger's delight was the one and only single by American singer Sylvia Striplin. It is an irresistible serving of soulful disco that really captures the spirit of the times. The track has been sampled on numerous occasions, but most famously on the classic track by Junior M.A.F.I.A. (Notorious B.I.G. production) on their song "Get Money" in 1995 and also by Armand Van Helden on "Full Moon" in 2000. On the flip is the sexy and lo-slung "You Can't Turn Me Away" featuring some sexy funk guitar licks and bass beneath Striplin's powerfully seductive vocals.

Review: Late Nite Tuff Guy bursts through RSD 2016 with a hot selection of disco-flavoured house chuggers, and we'd been waiting on a comeback from both the dude and label - all boxes ticked from our side. "Hold Tite" is the perfect summer blazer, all luscious vocals and dripping beats, and "I Don't Like Acid" takes that same soulful spirit but strips the groove right down to a bopping little rhythm that is likely to be enjoyed by both hip-hop and house fans alike. The flip's "One Night In A Disco" is a sample-heavy, string-infused floor-melter, whereas "Shelter Me" goes all balearic and feet-up - the perfect lounge cut.

Review: For fans of Goldfrapp - and there are many - this seventh studio album has been a long time coming. In some ways, the fans have a point; it's been four long years since the usually prolific duo of Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory last dropped an LP. Happily, Silver Eye has the feel of a fan favourite in waiting; a full-length that returns to the glistening cheeriness of their synth-pop heyday, rather than the cinematic ballads of 2012's slightly more experimental Tales of Us. While some critics have suggested it may be time for them to innovate again, nobody can argue that the evocative synth-pop songs here are not attractive, entertaining and liable to result in weeks spent singing the lyrics in the shower. In other words, it's vintage Goldfrapp.

Review: Well, you can certainly rely on the excellent Daptone label to deliver the finest in blues and soul music, which is exactly what's up with this glorious 7" from The Como Mamas. Hailing from Como, Mississippi, these three ladies know a thing or two about gospel music, especially about how to make it as funky as humanly possible. "Move Upstairs" steps back and forth with the unmistakable Southern flair, all joyous and full of good will, while the B-side, "Count Your Blessings", goes down a moodier, more soulful path that we instantly associate to the deep South and its iconic influence on black music. Wonderful stuff.

Review: A timely revisit to two of the stand out covers on Italian jazz/lounge posterboy Andrea Balducci's 2012 album Bloom. "Spooky" is a soft, sweet and succinctly measured take on Shapiro and Middlebrooks' mid 60s standard while "Hurts So Bad" is a respectful twist on Weinstein, Harshman and Randazzo's similar era classic that was made famous by Linda Ronstadt years later.

Review: Like many drummers, Alex Puddu has long been inspired by the work of Tony Allen. He pays tribute to the legendary Nigerian sticks-man on "The Devil Made Me Do It", a sumptuous dose of groovy downtempo Afrobeat laden with Allen-style polyrhythms, Africa '70 horns and lashings of eyes-closed electric piano solos. On the flip you'll find two different interpretations from Puddu. The first, subtitled "The Invisible Cosmic", doffs a cap to the Afro-cosmic world of Daniele Baldelli while retaining much of the warmth and musicality of the original mix. "The Invisible Astral" version is an altogether more spaced-out dub, with Puddu smothering the drums and horns in copious amounts of tape echo.

Review: Long-serving Dutch D&B trio Black Sun Empire return with their sixth full length, their first for nearly five years. Described by bass music bible UKF as "high impact" and "far-reaching", The Wrong Room is every bit as heavy and entertaining as you'd expect. It boasts collaborations with a string of like-minded talents - think Noisia, Audio, Virus Syndicate, State of Mind and Prolix - and sees the trio fuse their usual razor-sharp breakbeats and weighty sub-bass with industrial-tinged textures, spiraling electronics and nods towards the riff-heavy sounds of trance. There are naturally diversions dotted throughout, but The Wrong Room rarely strays from the dancefloor.

Review: We've been steadily teased by Bastard Jazz with a slow flow of singles but the time has come to reveal B Bravo's whole debut album... And he hasn't disappointed. A supreme cosmic boogie experience throughout, Bravo flexes around the funk/house/hip-hop axis with sunshine synths, loose swinging drums, heavyweight talkbox action and oodles of funk and timely displays of sensitivity. Highlights that really showcase the soul spectrum B Bravo explores range from the Chromeo-style party jam "I'm For Real" to the horn-hazed tinkling "LA Nights" to the dreamy west coast house struts and wriggles of "Summer Love". Sure fire summer silver lining.

The self-titled LP is spread across a whopping five 12"s, but it gives latecomers a chance to catch up on some of their previous smashers such as "La Bocca" and "Delon" as well as presenting some fresh wares from the joint creative forces of Lazare Hoche, Malin Genie and Samuel Andre Madsen. The grooves bump just right, the moods unfurl like toffee-flavoured smoke and with these 12 jams Mandar prove once again why they're at the top of the deep house game.

Review: BOOM! Talk about a bombshell landing on us like a ton of bricks! Or, rather, a load of locked grooves for us to bash out on any unsuspecting club-dweller. Big boys Willie Burns and DJ Overdose team up for a collaborative pack of stripped-down rhythms on DJ Haus' constantly inspiring Unknown To The Unknown, and we think these two are a perfect match. The former's been running his own strain of house since the beginning of the 2010s, while the latter's offered a very special sort of electro sound that takes plenty of influence from The Hague's school of thought and of course, the Miami sound. This is only a 12" but it feels like much more than that; the A-side is made up of two swinging house grooves that recall the best of the Chicago warehouse days, whereas the flip is comprised of 15 banging locked grooves for you to mash up and warp as you please throughout for your Saturday night jamboree. Absolutely sick - cop it!

Review: For his label's tenth edition, Switzerland's Baaz serves up a fine release by German deep house purveyor Iron Curtis on the Maple EP. Starting off with the raw, minimal and cyclical techno jack of the title track (wicked!), it's a bit of a change of pace from the label's usual preference for ultra deep or dubby aesthetics: but equally subterranean and hypnotic all the same. Speaking of which, "Collision" indeed gets with the program on this absolutely lush downtime journey, while on the flip we've got two short but sweet offerings: "Entago Entery" and the blissful "Reset Me" providing the mandatory ambient track that has been known to close out the label's recent offerings. More quality from undoubtedly one of the top labels in deep house of the moment.

Review: Hailing from Japan, Iori Wakasa is a name that has been gathering a great deal of hype over the past few years and with good reason. Having built up his skills as a majorly talented DJ in Tokyo and spinning a wide range of sounds and styles, his reputation continues to grow at pace thanks to a string of amazing releases on labels such as Highgrade and WirSindEins in recent years. Here he proves what all the fuss is about with a stunning four track EP on Steve Bug's Dessous Recordings. It's deep house of the darker variety on "Be There" or "Give Me"; the kind of tracks that Ferrer & Sydenham were responsible for back in the day while "Feel It Dizzy" is the kind of woozy and sultry kinda deepness that would make even DJ Koze stand up and notice.

Review: Back in July, hardware fetishists and acid house revivalists Paranoid London returned with We Come To Rock, their first 12" single for three years. Here they build on that success with two more razor-sharp, 303-enhanced hardware jams for sweat-soaked basements and pitch-black warehouses. Of the two, it's the more ragged and psychedelic "Our Man Though" that hits home hardest, thanks largely to the combo layering waves of twisted acid lines on top of distorted, teak-tough drum machine beats. "Give Me The" is a little more sedate in comparison, but still impresses thanks to its smart combination of a menacing groove, pitched-down vocal samples, and occasional, undulating acid motifs.

Review: Thus far Lost City Of Atlantis has been spotted on just one 12", released on Emotions Electric two years ago and supposedly the handiwork of a producer active in the late 80s between New York and Detroit. Whether the providence is correct or not hardly matters, the most important thing is the quality of the tunes, and on this new release for Slow Town there's an abundance of hardware delights to get freaky to. "Secret Code Of 7" is a particularly bugging synth jam, while "Four" piles the swinging funk on heavy. This is certainly rough and ready house music, whenever and wherever it was made.

Review: MOi? Who? Give it a listen and we'll give you one guess. His sound is unmistakeable isn't it. The new Ukrainian hero of rolling and funky minimal is back under yet another alias (and imprint) and he's already up to number four. "Track 1" on the A side is built for peak time headrushes on the dancefloors of Concrete and Hoppetosse. Expect this one to de destroying crowds of the underground this Summer! The B side offering is a bit more stripped; the fierce bass supported by some swirling and hypnotic pads on this surefire DJ tool that'll make even Ion Ludwig step up his game!

Review: Juan Mendez has pushed the largely abstract approach on his debut album towards the dance floor. Ironically though, the LP version of "Strange Attractor" was more brutal and upfront. On this version, Mendez lets the chain mail groove throb beneath layer upon layer of eerie chords, abstract whispers and what could be an angle grinder running in the background. This extended version of "Invocation Of Lust" has an eerie, garbled vocal in the background, but fused with spiky metallic percussion and a thumping kick drum and throbbing bass, makes for a compelling club record. Finally, "Utopian disaster (End)" is the most Sandwell-esque track on offer, its slamming rhythm, droning sounds and reverberating, doubled up claps sounding like a sequel to the Negative Fascination EP that was released on the seminal, now defunct techno label.

Review: Artyom Ziobin's distinctive style of minimal house stands apart from the usual thoroughfare of moody, dubby shufflers. Instead the Russian producer reaches for a warm, disco-influenced sound palette which he then slices and dices into sleek, crafty party workouts with lashings of panache as well as studio ingenuity. Following appearances on Bump Foot and Grow Vinyl, the latest outing for Plantae comes via Elephant Moon, with lead track "Amber Light Of Ethereal Shadow" cutting a dashing figure across the soundscape with its busy but nimble mixture of synth splashes and stuttering drums.

  1. Jinx (6:41)
  2. Scanners (7:21)
Review: Forest Drive West is (or are?) still a mysterious figure to us, but we kinda like it to be that way; there is something pure and intriguing about an artist who prefers to keep themselves in relative shadows nowadays, so we tip our hat to it. The producer has already appeared for the Livity Sound massive, a brief but illuminating cameo for their Dnuos Ytivil offshoot that offered two steely slices of tooled-up techno. He's back with another two-tracker, first up with "Jinx" and its reverberated filter of moody 4/4 barely held together by a swarm of percussion and sporadic kick drums - a true bog room joint! "Scanners", on the B-side, is equally cavernous in texture, dipping and rising at a pace that we're increasingly beginning to see as the Forest Drive West standard; this is techno for those who don't like the genre, or better yet, for the DJs looking for a bit more movement in their sets. We love it. This is a keeper.

Review: The general consensus is that We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service, A Tribe Called Quest's sixth and final album, is something of a triumph, with many critics hailing it as the best full-length of 2016. It's certainly a fine set, full of their trademark musically rich backing tracks (enhanced, this time round, with a greater reliance on live instrumentation), conscious lyrics and distinctive, on-point vocal delivery. Given their legendary status within hip-hop, it's unsurprising to see a string of similarly high profile guests dotted throughout, with Busta Rhymes, Andre 3000, Kayne West, Consequence, Jack White and Elton John (presumably in sampled form) all lending a hand. Even if you're only mildly interested in hip-hop, this should be essential listening.

Review: The regular cast of characters to be found lurking round Pressed For Time knock heads over some no-nonsense groovesome house music for those who like a kink in their party selections. Goshawk lead the charge with the tough yet soulful "Mozambique (Dub Chord)", using some choice keys and vocal samples to create a warm mood over the top of the chunky drums. Rhythm Plate turn the funk up and smooth out proceedings with undulating pads and string stabs before Shaka strides in on the flip with an impeccable slice of boogie-infused good time house music. YSE rounds the EP off with a peppy workout sprinkled with playful leads and a tightly wound beat.

Review: This EP from Miami-based producer His Dirty Secrets is undoubtedly one of the strongest EPs to appear on Masterworks Music yet. Opener "Floatin" is a warm and woozy affair, with the Floridian studio combining his own slick beats and rich musicality with excerpts from a wavy, jazz-funk original. "Fantom (African Woman)" sees him doffing a cap to Fela Kuti while sticking with the laidback, deep house/Balearic disco fusion vibe, while "All The Way" is the kind of soaring, string-drenched, filter-heavy disco outing that should get dancers sweating out on the floor. He rounds things off with the loose and bumpy "Prelude", which includes some killer vocal samples and cut-up excerpts from a very famous disco classic.

Review: Julio Ernesto Estrada, simply known as Fruko, is a Colombian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and orchestra leader who pretty much gave salsa its name from the early 1970s. You go ask any serious DJ who is into South American music, and the name Fruko will no doubt get dropped on a regular basis. In fact, up until now, this man's records have made themselves scarce on the second-hand market, and there is a very particular sort of crowd whose willing to spend big money on them. A La Memoria Del Muerto is his second LP, from 1972, and what is perhaps the man's most definitive work. It's just one of those albums that runs fluidly from start to finish, showcasing all of its native beauty with effortless skill and furore. Rampant trumpets, seductive piano keys, kinetic percussion, and a sense of tropicality make this into a spectacular piece of work.

Review: We can think of a fair few disco diggers who will be more than a little annoyed by this re-issue. Originally released on the obscure La Shawn label back in 1980, "Take Me I'm Yours" is widely considered to be one of Patrick Adams' best productions. It's certainly something of a dusty gem, with Mary Clark's soulful, country-tinged vocals simply soaring over a reggae-tinged, string-drenched disco groove. It would have been nice to have seen original flipside "You Got Your Hold On Me" included, but it's not a major issue; given the in-demand (and hard-to-find) nature of the A-side, we should be pleased it's come back round again.

Review: Annie Mac has been hammering Dimension's "UK" in her sets of late, describing it as one of the hottest tunes of 2017 to date. It's certainly something of an anthem-in-waiting, fusing as it does references to the dawn of the jungle movement - both in some of the percussion sounds, and the various spoken word vocal samples scattered throughout - with a ten-ton bassline and suitably fierce rave electronics. Those mind-altering, rave-style riffs are remodeled and pushed to the fore on flipside "In Bleach", a peak-time stomper that takes no prisoners. While it lacks a little of the A-side's nostalgia-tinted finesse, it still has all the makings of a scene anthem.

Review: The Spacetalk label returns with this fine compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: Tech-house's own cockney rebel, East End Dubs, has been busy of late. The master of DJ tools and rhythm-focused box jams kept up a steady stream of releases in 2016, delivering a trio of coloured vinyl treats. His first missive of 2017 comes on psychedelically inclined "splatter" pattern vinyl, but doesn't stray far from his usual musical blueprint. On the A-side you'll find "Swing Riddim", where liquid chords and spacey electronics cluster around an immaculately programmed, bass-heavy tech-house groove. B-side "Lexa Groove" is a slightly deeper and more becalmed affair, even if it does boast a more sizeable bassline and chunkier drums.

Review: On this groovy and entertaining 12", Stassy welcomes sometime Elephant Moon producer Lee Burton to Taverna Tracks for the first time. Burton's brand of deep house - musically rich and melodious, but with suitably bumping beats - is a perfect fit with the Berlin-based label's previous output. There's much to admire throughout, from the ultra-deep and spacey shuffle of "Circadian Rhythm", to the UK garage influenced deep space bounce of "Cocoa Powder". Best of all, though, is opener "Horizontal Falls", where sun-blushed synth motifs and dreamy, head-in-the-clouds chords are accompanied by an undulating bassline and skipping, US garage inspired drums.
